Recently there is a growing interest in the adaptive multimedia networking where the bandwidth of an ongoing multimedia call can be dynamically adjusted. In the wireless/mobile multimedia networks using the adaptive framework, the existing QoS provisioning focused on the call blocking probability and the forced termination probability should be modified. We, therefore, redefine a QoS parameter – the cell overload probability – from the viewpoint of the adaptive multimedia networking. Then, we propose a distributed call admission control (CAC) algorithm that guarantees the upper bound of the cell overload probability. Also, a bandwidth adaptation algorithm which seeks to minimize the cell overload probability is also presented. Simulation experiments are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed CAC algorithm. Furthermore, the performance of the adaptive wireless/mobile network is compared to that of the existing non-adaptive wireless/mobile networks. As a further step in QoS provisioning, we propose another QoS parameter, the degradation period ratio, and discuss analytically how the CAC algorithm guarantees the upper bound of the degradation period ratio.  相似文献

This paper provides a novel design concept for advanced mobile multi interface terminals with radio network aggregation capability and enhanced quality of service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia services (voice, video and data) in heterogeneous wireless and mobile networks. A new module is established which provides the best QoS and lowest cost for any given multimedia service by using simultaneously all available wireless and mobile access networks for a given traffic flow. This novel adaptive QoS module with adaptive QoS routing algorithm is called advanced QoS routing algorithm (AQoSRA), which is defined independently from any existing and future radio access technology. The performance of our proposal is evaluated using simulations and analysis with multi-interface mobile stations with AQoSRA within, carrying multimedia traffic in heterogeneous mobile and wireless environment with coexistence of multiple Radio Access Technologies, such as 3G, 4G as well as future 5G radio access networks. The analysis of the proposed framework for radio networks aggregation in advanced mobile terminals has shown overall better performances regarding the achievable throughput and multimedia access probability in heterogeneous wireless and mobile environment.  相似文献

With the emergence of broadband wireless networks and increasing demand of multimedia information on the Internet, wireless multimedia services are foreseen to become widely deployed in the next decade. Real-time video transmission typically has requirements on quality of service (QoS). However, wireless channels are unreliable and the channel bandwidth varies with time, which may cause severe degradation in video quality. In addition, for video multicast, the heterogeneity of receivers makes it difficult to achieve efficiency and flexibility. To address these issues, three techniques, namely, scalable video coding, network-aware adaptation of end systems, and adaptive QoS support from networks, have been developed. This paper unifies the three techniques and presents an adaptive framework, which specifically addresses video transport over wireless networks. The adaptive framework consists of three basic components: (1) scalable video representations; (2) network-aware end systems; and (3) adaptive services. Under this framework, as wireless channel conditions change, mobile terminals and network elements can scale the video streams and transport the scaled video streams to receivers with a smooth change of perceptual quality. The key advantages of the adaptive framework are: (1) perceptual quality is changed gracefully during periods of QoS fluctuations and hand-offs; and (2) the resources are shared in a fair manner  相似文献

In this paper we present an advanced QoS provisioning module with vertical multi-homing framework for future fifth generation (5G) mobile terminals with radio network aggregation capability and traffic load sharing in heterogeneous mobile and wireless environments. The proposed 5G mobile terminal framework is leading to high performance utility networks with high QoS provisioning for any given multimedia service, higher bandwidth utilization and multi-RAT capabilities. It is using vertical multi-homing and virtual QoS routing algorithms within the mobile terminal, that is able to handle simultaneously multiple radio network connections via multiple wireless and mobile network interfaces. Our 5G proposal is user-centric, targeted to always-on connectivity, maximal network utilization, maximal throughput, seamless handovers and performances improvement by using vertical multi-homing, as well as session continuity. The performance of our proposed mobile terminal framework for 5G is evaluated using simulations and analysis with multimedia traffic in heterogeneous mobile and wireless scenarios with coexistence of multiple radio access technologies, such as 3G, 4G as well as future 5G radio access networks.  相似文献

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) offers performance guaranteed packet data services to mobile users over wireless frequency-division duplex links with time division multiple access, and core packet data networks. This paper presents a dynamic adaptive guaranteed Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning scheme over GPRS wireless mobile links by proposing a guaranteed QoS media access control (GQ-MAC) protocol and an accompanying adaptive prioritized-handoff call admission control (AP-CAC) protocol to maintain GPRS QoS guarantees under the effect of mobile handoffs. The GQ-MAC protocol supports bounded channel access delay for delay-sensitive traffic, bounded packet loss probability for loss-sensitive traffic, and dynamic adaptive resource allocation for bursty traffic with peak bandwidth allocation adapted to the current queue length. The AP-CAC protocol provides dynamic adaptive prioritized admission by differentiating handoff requests with higher admission priorities over new calls via a dynamic multiple guard channels scheme, which dynamically adapts the capacity reserved for dealing with handoff requests based on the current traffic conditions in the neighboring radio cells. Integrated services (IntServ) QoS provisioning over the IP/ATM-based GPRS core network is realized over a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) architecture, and mobility is supported over the core network via a novel mobile label-switching tree (MLST) architecture. End-to-end QoS provisioning over the GPRS wireless mobile network is realized by mapping between the IntServ and GPRS QoS requirements, and by extending the AP-CAC protocol from the wireless medium to the core network to provide a unified end-to-end admission control with dynamic adaptive admission priorities.  相似文献

As we move towards IP-based multimedia wireless networks with voice, video and data convergence, quality of service (QoS) provisioning will become an increasingly challenging task. One implication is that greater emphasis on managing the call admission and overall network resources will be needed. This paper presents a conservative and adaptive quality of service (CAQoS) framework for provisioning the QoS for both real-time and non-real-time traffic in a multimedia wireless network. Unlike most conventional schemes, which gradually scale down the bandwidth of ongoing connections to accommodate new connection/hand-off requests, CAQoS introduces an early scaling-down of bandwidth for new connections based on a designated provisioning model. The performance of a CAQoS system is evaluated through simulations of a realistic wireless environment. Simulation results show that CAQoS meets our design goals and outperforms conventional schemes.  相似文献

In wireless environment the bandwidth resource is limited and therefore judicious use of the available resources is needed. A bandwidth efficient Call Admission Control (CAC) is proposed in this paper for quality of service (QoS) provisioning for the services defined in IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX standards to satisfy both bandwidth and delay guarantees to the admitted connections. The concept of adaptive bandwidth degradation is introduced to improve the bandwidth utilization (BU) of the system. The proposed CAC scheme is analyzed by Markov Chain model and performance evaluation is made in comparison with fixed step size degradation. Results show that the proposed adaptive CAC scheme has excellent BU under stressed network condition. Also the long term average revenue is calculated for different service flows and for the overall system to see the efficiency of the adaptive CAC scheme.  相似文献

A MAC-Layer QoS Provisioning Protocol for Cognitive Radio Networks   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Due to the proliferation of diverse network devices with multimedia capabilities, there is an increasing need for Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in wireless networks. The MAC layer protocol with enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) in the IEEE 802.11-2007 is able to provide differentiated QoS for different traffic types in wireless networks through varying the Arbitration Inter-Frame Spaces (AIFS) and contention window sizes. However, the performance of high priority traffic can be seriously degraded in the presence of strong noise over the wireless channels. Schemes utilizing adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) technique have also been proposed for the provisioning of QoS. They can provide limited protection in the presence of noise but are ineffective in a high noise scenario. Although multiple non-overlapped channels exist in the 2.4 and 5?GHz spectrum, most IEEE 802.11-based multi-hop ad hoc networks today use only a single channel at anytime. As a result, these networks cannot fully exploit the aggregate bandwidth available in the radio spectrum provisioned by the standards. By identifying vacant channels through the use of cognitive radios technique, the noise problem can be mitigated by distributing network traffic across multiple vacant channels to reduce the node density per transmission channel. In this paper, we propose the MAC-Layer QoS Provisioning Protocol (MQPP) for 802.11-based cognitive radio networks (CRNs) which combines adaptive modulation and coding with dynamic spectrum access. Simulation results demonstrate that MQPP can achieve better performance in terms of lower delay and higher throughput.  相似文献

Future-generation wireless packet networks will support multimedia applications with diverse QoS requirements. Much of the research on scheduling algorithms has been focused on hard QoS provisioning of integrated services. Although these algorithms give hard delay bounds, their stringent requirements sacrifice the potential statistical multiplexing performance and flexibility of the packet-switched network. Furthermore, the complexities of the algorithms often make them impractical for wireless networks. There is a need to develop a packet scheduling scheme for wireless packet-switched networks that provides soft QoS guarantees for heterogeneous traffic, and is also simple to implement and manage. This article proposes token bank fair queuing (TBFQ), a soft scheduling algorithm that possesses these qualities. This algorithm is work-conserving and has a complexity of O(1). We focus on packet scheduling on a reservation-based TDMA/TDD wireless channel to service integrated real-time traffic. The TBFQ scheduling mechanism integrates the policing and servicing functions, and keeps track of the usage of each connection. We address the impact of TBFQ on mean packet delay, violation probability, and bandwidth utilization. We also demonstrate that due to its soft provisioning capabilities, the TBFQ performs rather well even when traffic conditions deviate from the established contracts.  相似文献

QoS-aware TDMA for end-to-end traffic scheduling in ad hoc networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The proliferation of low-cost broadband air interfaces has paved the way to the introduction of high-definition multimedia services in mobile and wireless networks. The cost for network resources utilization, when provisioning such services, will play a prominent role in their commercial success, since the more spare resources that can be used, the more cheaply the services can be delivered to the end users. In the context of promoting the role of ad hoc networks as service platforms for high quality multimedia applications, this article first discusses and classifies a set of issues involved in quality of service (QoS) provisioning in ad hoc networks and then presents a congestion-free TDMA algorithm for end-to-end network resources assignment via an optimized mechanism that relies on capacity requests and grants. The article also illustrates a method for invoking this algorithm to achieve efficient end-to-end QoS provisioning and concludes by showing the superiority of the proposed algorithm, as compared to other recently proposed TDMA scheduling algorithms

In this article we propose a cross-layer approach to investigate the impact of the physical-layer infrastructure on the data-link-layer QoS performance in mobile wireless networks. At the physical layer, we take the MIMO diversity schemes as well its AMC into account. At the data-link layer, our focus is on how this physical-layer infrastructure influences the real-time multimedia QoS provisioning performance such as delay-bound violation and buffer-overflow probabilities. To achieve this goal, we first model the physical-layer service process as a finite state Markov chain. Based on this FSMC model, we then characterize the QoS performance at the data-link layer using the effective capacity approach, which turns out to be critically important for the statistical QoS guarantees in mobile wireless networks. The numerical and simulation results obtained demonstrate that the proposed cross-layer model can efficiently characterize the interaction between the physical layer infrastructure and upper layer protocols' QoS provisioning performance.  相似文献

In wireless networks carrying multimedia traffic (voice, video, data, and image), it becomes necessary to provide a quality-of-service(QoS) guarantee for multimedia traffic connections supported by the network. In order to provide mobile hosts with high QoS in the next-generation wireless networks, efficient and better bandwidth reservation schemes must be designed. This paper presents a novel dynamic-grouping bandwidth reservation scheme as a solution to support QoS guarantees in the next-generation wireless networks. The proposed scheme is based on the probabilistic resource estimation to provide QoS guarantees for multimedia traffic in wireless cellular networks. We establish several reservation time sections, called groups, according to the mobility information of mobile hosts of each base station. The amount of reserved bandwidth for each base station is dynamically adjusted for each reservation group. We use the dynamic-grouping bandwidth reservation scheme to reduce the connection blocking rate and connection dropping rate, while increasing the bandwidth utilization. The simulation results show that the dynamic-grouping bandwidth reservation scheme provides less connection-blocking rate and less connection-dropping rate and achieves high bandwidth utilization.  相似文献

Scheduling schemes for multimedia service in wireless OFDM systems   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Scheduling schemes play a key role in the system performance of broadband wireless systems such as WLANs/WMANs. Maximal SNR and round robin are two conventional scheduling strategies that emphasize efficiency and fairness, respectively. The proportional fair scheme provides a trade-off between efficiency and fairness, and has been well studied in TDMA and CDMA systems. In this article we extended the PF scheduling scheme to OFDM-based BWSs (OPF). In addition, we propose three variations: adaptive OPF (AOPF), multimedia AOPF (MAOPF), and normalized MAOPF (NMAOPF) in order to meet the QoS requirements for multirate services in multimedia systems. The adaptive modulation and coding schemes in time varying and frequency selective fading are considered. The system performances of the algorithms are compared in terms of efficiency (throughput and mean packet delay) and fairness (user satisfaction rate and average user rate). Joint physical and media access control layer simulation results show that AOPF and MAOPF can improve throughput at the cost of fairness, and NMAOPF can provide the highest throughput without losing fairness.  相似文献

It is important to provide quality of service (QoS) guarantees if we want to support multimedia applications over wireless networks. In this paper, considering the features of tiering in sectored cellular networks, we propose a novel scheme for bandwidth reservation to approach QoS provisioning. By predicting the movement of each connection, the reserving of bandwidth is only required in needful neighboring cells instead of in all neighboring cells. In addition, an admission control mechanism incorporated with bandwidth borrowing assists in distributing scarce wireless bandwidth in more adaptive way. Through mathematical analysis, we proof the advantages of tier‐based approach and the bound for the selection of tiered boundary. The simulation results also verify that our scheme can achieve superior performance than traditional schemes regarding no bandwidth reserving, fixed bandwidth reserving, and bandwidth borrowing in sectored cellular networks when performance metrics are measured in terms of the connection dropping probability (CDP), connection blocking probability (CBP), and bandwidth utilization (BU). One of the major challenges in supporting multimedia services over Internet protocol (IP)-based code-division multiple-access (CDMA) wireless networks is the quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning with efficient resource utilization. Compared with the circuit-switched voice service in the second-generation CDMA systems (i.e., IS-95), heterogeneous multimedia applications in future IP-based CDMA networks require more complex QoS provisioning and more sophisticated management of the scarce radio resources. This paper provides an overview of the CDMA-related QoS provisioning techniques in the avenues of packet scheduling, power allocation, and network coordination, summarizes state-of-the-art research results, and identifies further research issues.  相似文献

Effective support of real‐time multimedia applications in wireless access networks, viz. cellular networks and wireless LANs, requires a dynamic bandwidth adaptation framework where the bandwidth of an ongoing call is continuously monitored and adjusted. Since bandwidth is a scarce resource in wireless networking, it needs to be carefully allocated amidst competing connections with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we propose a new framework called QoS‐adaptive multimedia wireless access (QoS‐AMWA) for supporting heterogeneous traffic with different QoS requirements in wireless cellular networks. The QoS‐AMWA framework combines the following components: (i) a threshold‐based bandwidth allocation policy that gives priority to handoff calls over new calls and prioritizes between different classes of handoff calls by assigning a threshold to each class, (ii) an efficient threshold‐type connection admission control algorithm, and (iii) a bandwidth adaptation algorithm that dynamically adjusts the bandwidth of an ongoing multimedia call to minimize the number of calls receiving lower bandwidth than the requested. The framework can be modeled as a multi‐dimensional Markov chain, and therefore, a product‐form solution is provided. The QoS metrics—new call blocking probability (NCBP), handoff call dropping probability (HCDB), and degradation probability (DP)—are derived. The analytical results are supported by simulation and show that this work improves the service quality by minimizing the handoff call dropping probability and maintaining the bandwidth utilization efficiently. With the fast proliferation of QoS-enabled wireless packet networks, the need for effective QoS control is increasing. In this article, we focus on QoS provisioning in the cdma2000 1/spl times/ evolution for high-speed integrated data and voice (1/spl times/EV-DV) packet core network. We investigate a dynamic bandwidth provisioning method that is able to increase a service provider's revenue. It is achieved by releasing unutilized bandwidth for use by other profitable services. The proposed method is implemented as an SNMP-compliant management information base and deployed at the packet data serving node. The experiments conducted on the LG Telecom 1/spl times/EV-DV testbed show that the method can increase the bandwidth for the conversational class and guarantee adequate service quality for the background class as well.  相似文献

With their inherent broadcast capabilities and reliable extensive geographical coverage, the broadband satellite networks are emerging as a promising approach for the delivery of multimedia services in 3G and beyond systems. Given the limited capacity of the satellite component, to meet the diverse quality of service (QoS) demands of multimedia applications, it is highly desired that the available resources can be adaptively utilized in an optimized way. In this paper, we draw our attention on the development and evaluation of an efficient packet scheduling scheme in a representative broadband satellite system, namely satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (SDMB), which is positioned as one of the most attractive solutions in the convergence of a closer integration with the terrestrial mobile networks for a cost‐effective delivery of point‐to‐multipoint services. By taking into account essential aspects of a successful QoS provisioning while preserving the system power/resource constraints, the proposed adaptive multidimensional QoS‐based (AMQ) packet scheduling scheme in this paper aims to effectively satisfy diverse QoS requirements and adaptively optimize the resource utilization for the satellite multimedia broadcasting. The proposed scheme is formulated via an adaptive service prioritization algorithm and an adaptive resource allocation algorithm. By taking into account essential performance criteria, the former is capable of prioritizing contending flows based on the QoS preferences and performance dynamics, while the latter allocates the resources, in an adaptive manner, according to the current QoS satisfaction degree of each session. Simulation results show that the AMQ scheme achieves significantly better performance than those of existing schemes on multiple performance metrics, e.g. delay, throughput, channel utilization and fairness.
