Abstract

The current work evaluates the wear and frictional performance of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) sliding against different metal counterfaces, stainless steel(SS), mild steel (MS) and aluminium (Al), under dry contact condition. The experiments were conducted using pin on disc machine at different sliding distances (0–40·32 km), 15 N applied load and 2·8 m s–1 sliding velocity. Interface temperatures and frictional forces were measured simultaneously during the sliding, while specific wear rates were determined for every 1·68 km sliding distance. Based on the optical microscopy of the worn surface and wear track, frictional and wear results were analysed and discussed. The experimental results showed that the type of counterface material significantly influences both frictional and wear performances of the selected polymers. This was mainly due to the film transfer characteristics. Higher temperature and friction coefficient for UHMWPE and HDPE were evident when sliding took place against Al counterface. Sliding the polymers against stainless steel showed low friction coefficients compared to other counterfaces.  相似文献

Investigations on the dry sliding wear behavior of tungsten carbide (WC)-reinforced iron matrix composites were carried out at room temperature. Three sets of samples (unreinforced iron, 4 wt% micrometer-size (~5–15 μm) WC-reinforced iron and 4 wt% nanosize (~30 nm) WC-reinforced iron were prepared using a powder metallurgy route to assess their friction and wear behaviors under two different loads. The relative dry sliding wear performances of the micrometer-size and nanosize WC-reinforced composites were compared with unreinforced matrix. An increase in microhardness of the order of 2.5 times was observed in the case of 4 wt% nanosize WC-reinforced iron matrix compared to the unreinforced iron matrix. The wear rate was 1.35 to 1.45 times lower in the case of nanocomposites compared to the unreinforced iron matrix (under different experimental conditions). The values of the coefficient of friction (COF) of composites were found to decrease with increase in load. Nanocomposites showed lower COF, surface roughness, and fractal dimension (D) values than micrometer-size WC-reinforced composites and the unreinforced iron matrix.  相似文献

The investigation of lubricated friction and wear is an extended study. The aim of this study is to investigate the friction and wear characteristics of double fractionated palm oil (DFPO) as a biolubricant using a pin-on-disk tribotester under loads of 50 and 100 N with rotating speeds of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 ms?1 in a 1-h operation time. In this study, hydraulic oil and engine oil (SAE 40) were used as reference base lubricants. The experiment was conducted using aluminum pins and an SKD 11(alloy tool steel) disc lubricated with test lubricants. To investigate the wear and friction behavior, images of the worn surface were taken by optical microscopy. From the experimental results, the coefficient of friction (COF) rose when the sliding speed and load were high. In addition, the wear rate for a load of 100 N for all lubricants was almost always higher compared to lubricant with a load of 50 N. The results of this experiment reveal that the palm oil lubricant can be used as a lubricating oil, which would help to reduce the global demand for petroleum-based lubricants substantially.  相似文献

The wear and sliding friction response of a hybrid copper metal matrix composite reinforced with 10 wt% of tin (Sn) and soft solid lubricant (1, 5, and 7 wt% of MoS2) fabricated by a powder metallurgy route was investigated. The influence of the percentages of reinforcement, load, sliding speed, and sliding distance on both the wear and friction coefficient were studied. The wear test with an experimental plan of six loads (5–30 N) and five sliding speeds (0.5–2.5 m/s) was conducted on a pin-on-disc machine to record loss in mass due to wear for two total sliding distances of 1,000 and 2,000 m. The results showed that the specific wear rate of the composites increased at room temperature with sliding distance and decreased with load. The wear resistance of the hybrid composite containing 7 wt% MoS2 was superior to that of the other composites. It was also observed that the specific wear rates of the composites decreased with the addition of MoS2. The 7 wt% MoS2 composites exhibited a very low coefficient of friction of 0.35. The hardness of the composite increased as the weight percentage of MoS2 increased. The wear and friction coefficient were mainly influenced by both the percentage of reinforcement and the load applied. Wear morphology was also studied using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis.  相似文献

In this study, the tribological properties of traditional manganese phosphate coatings and composite hBN coatings

composed of nano-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in layered manganese phosphate crystals on AISI 1040 steel were investigated. Wear tests were carried out under controlled temperature and humidity using ball-on-disc tribometers for samples that were either submerged in oil or retaining oil on their surfaces at a sliding speed of 2.5 cm/s with loads of 1, 3, 5, and 10 N and sliding distances of 40, 80, 100, and 120 m. The surface profiles before and after the tests were used to characterize the wear. The surfaces of the coated samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The coefficients of friction and wear rates of the coated samples were also measured. The average wear rates of the composite hBN-coated samples were significantly lower than those of the traditional manganese phosphate–coated samples for each of the loading conditions for the oil submersion and retained oil tests. The coefficient of friction (COF) values for the traditional manganese phosphate–coated samples did not change significantly with increasing load. The COF values for the composite hBN coated–samples decreased with increasing load in the oil submersion test.  相似文献

Response surface methodology (RSM) based on a D-optimal design was employed to investigate the tribological characteristics of journal bearing materials such as brass, bronze, and copper lubricated by a biolubricant, chemically modified rapeseed oil (CMRO). The wear and friction performance were observed for the bearing materials tested with TiO2, WS2, and CuO nanoadditives dispersed in the CMRO. The tests were performed by selecting sliding speed and load as numerical factors and nano-based biolubricant/bearing materials as the categorical factor to evaluate the tribological characteristics such as the coefficient of friction (COF) and specific wear rate. The results showed that RSM based on a D-optimal design was instrumental in the selection of suitable journal bearing materials for a typical system, especially one lubricated by nano-based biolubricant. At a sliding speed of 2.0 m/s and load of 100 N, the bronze bearing material with CMRO containing CuO nanoparticles had the lowest COF and wear rate. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination of the worn bearing surfaces showed that the bronze bearing material lubricated with CMRO containing CuO nanoadditive is smoother than copper/brass bearing material.  相似文献

The present study evaluates the tribological properties of boride layers on the surface of AISI 4140 steel, formed using the pack-boriding method. Commercial EKabor®2 was used as the boronizing agent and the treatment was carried out at 900, 950, 1000, and 1050 °C for 2, 4, and 6 h, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and microhardness tests were used to characterize the phase composition, microstructure, and local hardness, respectively, of the borided steel samples. Block-on-disc tests were used to investigate tribological properties. Abrasive wear tests were carried out using emery paper at a fixed sliding speed and three different loads. Adhesive wear tests were executed against AISI 52100 steel at a fixed load and distance. The coefficient of friction values (COF) of the samples were determined simultaneously during the tests. The weight loss and COF of the borided samples were compared with untreated samples and the results suggest that both wear resistance and friction properties of the AISI 4140 steel improve with boriding.  相似文献

In the current work, AISI 4140 steel was pack-boronized at 950°C for 3 h and gas-nitrided at 550°C for 72 h. All specimens used in this work were prepared from the same steel bar. A 3-µm-thick diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating (a-C:H) was deposited on the AISI D2 high-carbon, high-chromium, cold-worked tool steel by a plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique. Normalized, boronized, and nitrided steel pins were tested against DLC-coated AISI D2 steel at various normal loads (15, 30, 60, and 80 N) for 1,000 and 3,000 m sliding distance in ambient air. Specific wear rate of all pins decreased with increasing load, and a similar trend was observed for the coefficient of friction (COF). Microscopic and energy-dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) analysis confirmed the role of the transfer layer for a low COF with increasing load. At all loads, the specific wear rate of boronized pins was lower than that of the nitrided and normalized pin specimens. Boronized pins showed a specific wear rate in the range of 0.27 × 10?8 to 0.44 × 10?8 mm3/Nm and the COF was about 0.1.  相似文献

The progress in aerospace field requires a new NiAl matrix composite that can stand against wear and decrease the energy dissipation through decreasing friction. In this study, the tribological behavior of NiAl–1.5 wt% graphene composite is investigated at room temperature under a constant load of 12 N and different sliding velocities. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rate increase with increasing sliding velocity from 0.2 to 0.4 m/s due to the adhesion between the sliding bodies and tearing of the graphene layer. The friction coefficient and wear rate tend to decrease at a sliding velocity of 0.6 m/s as a result of severe plastic deformation and grain refinement of the worn surface. However, at 0.8 m/s the friction coefficient reaches a minimum value and the wear rate increases and changes the wear mechanism to fatigue wear. It can be concluded that various wear mechanisms lead to different tribological performance of NiAl–1.5 wt% graphene composite.  相似文献

The effect of load range of 30-100 N and speed range of 3-12 m/s on the wear and friction behavior of sand cast brake rotor made of A359-20 vol% SiC particle composites sliding against automobile friction material was investigated. Dry sliding frictional and wear behavior were investigated in a pin-on-disc type apparatus. Automobile friction material was used as pin, while the A359-20 vol% SiC particle composites formed the rotating disc. For comparison, the wear and friction behavior of commercially used cast iron brake rotor were studied. The results showed that the wear rate of the composite disc decreased with increasing the applied load from 30 to 50 N and increased with increasing the load from 50 to100 N. However, the wear rate of the composite disc decreased with increasing the sliding speed at all levels of load applied in the present work. For all sliding speeds, the friction coefficient of the composite disc decreased with applied load. The worn surfaces as well as wear debris were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. At load of 50 N and speed range of 3-12 m/s, the worn surface of the composite disc showed a dark adherent layer, which mostly consisted of constituents of the friction material. This layer acted as a protective coating and lubricant, resulting in an improvement in the wear resistance of the composite.  相似文献

This paper studies the effect of contact stress on friction and wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cups by means of friction and wear joint simulator testing under serum lubrication. For a given applied load, increasing the contact stress by increasing the ball/socket radial clearance decreased both the coefficient of friction and the wear rate. Friction and wear were highly correlated. The dependence of friction on contact stress for the UHMWPE socket under serum lubrication was similar to that of semi-crystalline polymers under dry sliding. This finding indicates the occurrence of partial dry contact at asperity levels for the metal-polyethylene ball-in-socket joint under serum lubrication.  相似文献

WS2 and WS2/Zr self-lubricating soft coatings were produced by medium-frequency magnetron sputtering, multi-arc ion plating and ion-beam-assisted deposition technique on the cemented carbide YT15 (WC + 15 % TiC + 6 % Co) substrates. Microstructural and fundamental properties of these coatings were examined. Sliding wear tests against 40Cr-hardened steel using a ball-on-disk tribometer method were carried out with these coated materials. The friction coefficient and wear rates were measured with various applied loads and sliding speeds. The wear surface features of the coatings were examined using SEM. The results showed that the WS-1 specimen (with WS2/Zr composite coating) has higher hardness and coating/substrate critical load compared with that of the WS-2 specimen (only with WS2 coating). The friction coefficient of WS-1 specimen increases with the increase in applied load and is quite insensitive to the sliding speed. The wear rate of the WS-1 specimen is almost constant under different applied loads and sliding speeds. The WS-1 specimen shows the smallest friction coefficient and wear rate among all the specimens tested under the same conditions. The WS-1 specimen exhibits improved friction behavior to that of the WS-2 specimen, and the antiwear lifetime of the WS2 coatings can be prolonged through adding Zr additives. The self-lubricating and wear mechanism of the WS2/Zr coating was also found from the sliding wear tests.  相似文献

The friction and wear behavior of gamma irradiated very high molecular weight polyethylene has been studied for radiation doses of 20 to 1000 MRad. For tests run at low loads the effect of irradiation is to increase the friction coefficient and the wear factor. As the load is increased the friction coefficient decreases and the wear factor remains constant. At a critical load there is an abrupt increase in the wear factor. However, further increase in the load leads to a decrease in the wear factor to about the original value. This wear behavior is quite different from that shown by unirradiated polyethylene and is connected to changes in structure resulting from the temperatures generated during sliding.  相似文献

This study examined the wear characteristics of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced with talc particles. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to construct empirical models to show the connection between control factors (filler loading, load and sliding speed) and responses (wear rate and average coefficient of friction (COF)) of UHMWPE. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed to project the optimization of the control variables in order to reduce the wear of UHMWPE. It was discovered that the rate of wear and the average COF of UHMWPE could be minimized by the inclusion of talc. The SEM analyses of the worn surfaces and transfer films indicated that the degree of wear on the surface of the UHMWPE was reduced.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate the wear properties of Saffil/Al, Saffil/Al2O3/Al and Saffil/SiC/Al hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) fabricated by squeeze casting method. Wear tests were done on a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester under both dry and lubricated conditions. The wear properties of the three composites were evaluated in many respects. The effects of Saffil fibers, Al2O3 particles and SiC particles on the wear behavior of the composites were elucidated. Wear mechanisms were analyzed by observing the worn surfaces of the composites. The variation of coefficient of friction (COF) during the wear process was recorded by using a computer. Under dry sliding condition, Saffil/SiC/Al showed the best wear resistance under high temperature and high load, while the wear resistances of Saffil/Al and Saffil/Al2O3/Al were very similar. Under dry sliding condition, the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear under mild load and room temperature, and the dominant wear mechanism changed to adhesive wear as load or temperature increased. Molten wear occurred at high temperature. Compared with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under lubricated condition, Saffil/Al showed the best wear resistance among them, and its COF value was the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites under lubricated condition was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred to them to different extents.  相似文献

Co-Cr-Mo alloy used for an artificial hip joint prosthesis was treated in a vacuum tubular furnace to obtain a thermal oxidation layer with anticipated surface properties. The tribological performance of the thermal oxidation layer was subsequently characterized under bovine serum albumin (BSA) lubrication by suitable accelerating wear with a pin-on-plate tribometer. The influence of (1) BSA concentration in range of 2–20 mg/ml and (2) load in the range of 2–10 N on wear was analyzed. Stability of the oxidation layer was also studied by electrochemical testing to analyze its corrosion resistance. The change in microstructure of the substrate, after removal of the oxidation layer, was also evaluated. Results should that (1) the coefficient of friction (COF) under the applied load of 10 N fluctuated by about 0.15, (2) a higher value of wear loss 4.23 × 10?4 mm3 in 20 mg/ml BSA, and (3) a decrease in the COF and increase in wear loss under a load of 2 to 8 N. It was suggested that the corrosion potential of the oxidation layer of ?0.25 V in BSA solution and ?0.13 V in NaCl solution moves further toward positive values and the corrosion current density is reduced, implying that the specimens with a thermal oxidation layer gave better corrosion resistance than the controlled Co-Cr-Mo alloy specimen.  相似文献

The influence of sliding speed on the unlubricated tribological behaviors of silicon nitride–boron nitride (Si3N4-hBN) composites was investigated with two modes in air by a pin-on-disc tribometer. Using the upper disc–on–bottom pin test mode, as the sliding speed increased, the friction coefficient of the sliding pairs showed an upward trend; for example, from 0.18 at the sliding speed of 0.40 m/s to 0.54 at the sliding speed of 1.31 m/s for the Si3N4/Si3N4–20% hBN pair. The surface analysis indicated that a tribochemical film consisting of SiO2 and H3BO3 formed on the wear surfaces of the Si3N4/Si3N4–20% hBN sliding pair at sliding speeds of 0.40 and 0.66 m/s. Moreover, the formation of this film lubricated the wear surfaces. At the sliding speed of 1.31 m/s, no tribochemical film formed on the wear surfaces, most likely due to the increase in surface temperature. In the upper pin–on–bottom disc test mode, the wear mechanism was dominated by abrasive wear, and no tribochemical products could be detected on the wear surfaces. The increase in sliding speed weakened the degree of abrasive wear, leading to a decrease in the friction coefficients.  相似文献

Vegetable oil has several characteristics that provide advantages for use as lubricant. This includes a high viscosity index, high flash point, high biodegradability, and friction and wear reduction properties. However, vegetable oil has some disadvantages such as low oxidation stability and low thermal stability. The transesterification process of palm oil using trimethylolpropane (TMP) alcohol has been proven to reduce the oxidation stability of vegetable oil. However, little research has been carried out on the effect of TMP ester as a lubricant in term of friction and wear. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of temperature on the tribological properties of TMP ester using a four-ball machine. The load and speed of the sample were set at 40 kg and 1,200 rpm, respectively. Temperature was varied between 50 and 100°C. It was found that TMP ester improved the friction properties by around 15–20%. At low temperature, TMP esters have a higher coefficient of friction (COF) compared to paraffin oil. However, as the temperature increased higher than 80°C, paraffin oil had a highere COF value. This is because at high temperature, the lubricant filmed formed by fatty acids tends to be less stable and breaks down more easily.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of martensite fraction on the wear mode and the energy dissipation by friction of dual phase (DP) steel tested under reciprocating sliding conditions. For this purpose, a Ti-Nb microalloyed steel was heat treated in a conventional furnace at temperatures between 780 and 880°C (intercritical annealing temperature) for 3 min to obtain DP microstructures with volume fractions of martensite between 25 and 90%. Wear tests were carried out in both DP and as-received samples, using a reciprocating tribometer with ball-on-flat geometry, at two constant applied loads, 2.5 and 4 N. The wear damage of each sample was measured through volume loss and the dissipated energy during the test. The obtained results evidenced a significant influence of the contact load over the wear mode, because at low load the DP wear was reduced with increased hardness but just up to 75% of martensite. At high load, the sliding process promotes an oxide mixture in the ferritic microstructure that acts as a factor in wear reduction.  相似文献

Friction and wear behaviors of hydrogenated fullerene-like (H-FLC) carbon films sliding against Si3N4 ceramic balls were performed at different contact loads from 1 to 20 N on a reciprocating sliding tribometer in air. It was found that the films exhibited non-Amontonian friction behaviors, the coefficient of friction (COF) decreased with normal contact load increasing: the COF was ~0.112 at 1 N contact load, and deceased to ultralow value (~0.009) at 20 N load. The main mechanism responsible for low friction and wear under varying contact pressure is governed by hydrogenated carbon transfer film that formed and resided at the sliding interfaces. In addition, the unique fullerene-like structures induce well elastic property of the H-FLC films (elastic recovery 78%), which benefits the high load tolerance and induces the low wear rate in air condition. For the film with an ultralow COF of 0.009 tested under 20 N load in air, time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) signals collected inside and outside the wear tracks indicated the presence of C2H3 and C2H5 fragments after tribological tests on the H-FLC films surface. We think that the tribochemistry and elastic property of the H-FLC films is responsible for the observed friction behaviors, the high load tolerance, and chemical inertness of hydrogenated carbon-containing transfer films instead of the graphitization of transfer films is responsible for the steady-state low coefficients of friction, wear, and interfacial shear stress.  相似文献
