A three-dimensional and two-phase model was employed to investigate the effect of the anisotropic GDL thermal conductivity on the heat transfer and liquid water removal in the PEMFCs with serpentine flow field and semi-counter flow operation. The GDL with different anisotropic thermal conductivity in the three directions (x, y, z) was simulated for four cases. As a result, the water saturation, temperature, species, current, potential distribution and proton conductivity were obtained. According to the comparison between the results of each case, some new conclusions are obtained and listed as below: (1) The anisotropic GDL produces the high temperature difference than that of isotropic case, and the in-plane thermal conductivity perpendicular to the gas channels is more important than that of along channels, which may produce the larger temperature difference. (2) Water saturation decreases due to the large temperature difference in the anisotropic case, but some water vapor may condense in the area neighbor to the channel ribs due to the cool function of the current collector and the great temperature difference. (3) The anisotropic thermal conductivity in the through-plane direction and the in-plane direction perpendicular to the gas channels can lead to the decrease of the membrane conductivity. (4) The isotropic GDL is better than that of anisotropic one for the uniform current density. Also, in-plane thermal conductivity perpendicular to the channels has more negative effect on the current density distribution in the membrane than that of the along channels one.  相似文献

In this work, assembly pressure and flow channel size on proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance are optimized by means of a multi-model. Based on stress-strain data of the SGL-22BB GDL obtained from its initial compression experiments, Young's modulus with different ranges of assembly pressure fits well through modeling. A mechanical model is established to analyze influences of assembly pressure on various gas diffusion layer parameters. Moreover, a CFD calculation model with different assembly pressures, channel width, and channel depth are established to calculate PEMFC performances. Furthermore, a BP neural network model is utilized to explore optimal combination of assembly pressure, channel width and channel depth. Finally, the CFD model is used to validate effect of size optimization on PEMFC performance. Results indicate that gap change of GDL below bipolar ribs is more remarkable than that below channels under action of the assembly pressure, making liquid water easily transported under high porosity, which is conducive to liquid water to the channels, reduces the accumulation of liquid water under the ribs, and enhances water removal in the PEMFC. Affected by the assembly force, change of GDL porosity affects its diffusion rate, permeability and other parameters, which is not conducive to mass transfer in GDL. Optimizing the depth and different dimensions through width of the flow field can effectively compensate for this effect. Therefore, the PEMFC performance can be enhanced through the comprehensive optimization of the assembly force, flow channel width and flow channel depth. The optimal parameter is obtained when assembly pressure, channel width and channel depth are set as 0.6 MPa, 0.8 mm, and 0.8 mm, respectively. The parameter optimization enhances the mass transfer, impedance, and electrochemical characteristics of PEMFC. Besides, it effectively enhances the quality transfer efficiency inside GDL, prevents flooding, and reduces concentration loss and ohmic loss.  相似文献

The cross flow in the under‐land gas diffusion layer (GDL) between 2 adjacent channels plays an important role on water transport in proton exchange membrane fuel cell. A 3‐dimensional (3D) two‐phase model that is based on volume of fluid is developed to study the liquid water‐air cross flow within the GDL between 2 adjacent channels. By considering the detailed GDL microstructures, various types of air‐water cross flows are investigated by 3D numerical simulation. Liquid water at 4 locations is studied, including droplets at the GDL surface and liquid at the GDL‐catalyst layer interface. It is found that the water droplet at the higher‐pressure channel corner is easier to be removed by cross flow compared with droplets at other locations. Large pressure difference Δp facilitates the faster water removal from the higher‐pressure channel. The contact angle of the GDL fiber is the key parameter that determines the cross flow of the droplet in the higher‐pressure channel. It is observed that the droplet in the higher‐pressure channel is difficult to flow through the hydrophobic GDL. Numerical simulations are also performed to investigate the water emerging process from different pores of the GDL bottom. It is found that the amount of liquid water removed by cross flow mainly depends on the pore's location, and the water under the land is removed entirely into the lower‐pressure channel by cross flow.  相似文献

We studied the interaction of a water droplet with a solid wall on a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer (GDL). Of particular interest is the stability of the droplet as a function of plate wetting properties and the potential for liquid entrapment in the GDL/land contact area. Such transport is of relevance to breakthrough dynamics and convective liquid droplet transport in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell cathode gas channels. While a variety of complex coupled transport phenomena are present in the PEM fuel cell gas channel, we utilize a very simplified experimental model of the system where a droplet originally placed on a hydrophobic GDL is translated quasistatically across the GDL surface by a solid surface. Transport and entrapment are imaged using fluorescence microscopy. This work provides new insights into droplet behaviour at the GDL/land interface in a PEM fuel cell and suggests that hydrophobic land areas are preferable for mitigating the accumulation of liquid water under the land area of the gas flow channels.  相似文献

The water flooding and two-phase flow of reactants and products in cathode flow channels (0.8 mm in width, 1.0 mm in depth) were studied by means of transparent proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Three transparent proton exchange membrane fuel cells with different flow fields including parallel flow field, interdigitated flow field and cascade flow field were used. The effects of flow field, cell temperature, cathode gas flow rate and operation time on water build-up and cell performance were studied, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the liquid water columns accumulating in the cathode flow channels can reduce the effective electrochemical reaction area; it makes mass transfer limitation resulting in the cell performance loss. The water in flow channels at high temperature is much less than that at low temperature. When the water flooding appears, increasing cathode flow rate can remove excess water and lead to good cell performance. The water and gas transfer can be enhanced and the water removal is easier in the interdigitated channels and cascade channels than in the parallel channels. The cell performances of the fuel cells that installed interdigitated flow field or cascade flow field are better than that installed with parallel flow field. The images of liquid water in the cathode channels at different operating time were recorded. The evolution of liquid water removing out of channels was also recorded by high-speed video.  相似文献

The purpose of this work is to numerically investigate the effects of non-uniform compression of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and GDL intrusion into a channel due to the channel/rib structure of the flow-field plate. The focus is placed on accurately predicting two-phase transport between the compressed GDL near the ribs and uncompressed GDL near the channels, and its associated effects on cell performance. In this paper, a GDL compression model is newly developed and incorporated into a comprehensive three-dimensional, two-phase PEFC model developed earlier. To assess solely the effects of GDL compression and intrusion, the new fuel cell model is applied to a simple single-straight channel fuel cell geometry. Numerical simulations with different levels of GDL compression and intrusion are carried out and simulation results reveal that the effects of GDL compression and intrusion considerably increase the non-uniformity, particularly, the in-plane gradient in liquid saturation, oxygen concentration, membrane water content, and current density profiles that in turn results in significant ohmic and concentration polarizations. The present three-dimensional GDL compression model yields realistic species profiles and cell performance that help to identify the optimal MEA, gasket, and flow channel designs in PEFCs.  相似文献

A two-phase flow process model for the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, considering also the cathode catalyst layer (CL), is presented. For this purpose, a systematic analysis of the factors affecting flooding and drying, including the liquid accumulation in the gas channel (CH), was performed using a one-dimensional reference model for the GDL and a compact channel model. The treatment proposed for the CH-GDL interface was compared with other boundary conditions in the literature. It was concluded that the liquid accumulation in the channel is determinant for estimating the steady state and transient GDL flooding, but that predicting the saturation level in the CL can help for determining operation policies for precluding flooding in the GDL-CL composite, in the absence of an adequate channel model. Bifurcation behavior, associated with the water phase change, was identified by means of the compact model.  相似文献

Flooding of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and dehydrating of the polymer electrolyte membrane have been the key problems to be solved for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). So far, almost no papers published have focused on studies of the liquid water flux through differently structured gas diffusion layers (GDLs). For gas diffusion layers including structures of uniform porosity, changes in porosity (GDL with microporous layer (MPL)) and gradient change porosity, using a one-dimensional model, the liquid saturation distribution is analyzed based on the assumption of a fixed liquid water flux through the GDL. And then the liquid water flux through the GDL is calculated based on the assumption of a fixed liquid saturation difference between the interfaces of the catalyst layer/GDL and the GDL/gas channel. Our results show that under steady-state conditions, the liquid water flux through the GDL increases as contact angle and porosity increase and as the GDL thickness decreases. When a MPL is placed between the catalyst layer and the GDL, the liquid saturation is redistributed across the MPL and GDL. This improves the liquid water draining performance. The liquid water flux through the GDL increases as the MPL porosity increases and the MPL thickness decreases. When the total thickness of the GDL and MPL is kept constant and when the MPL is thinned to 3 μm, the liquid water flux increases considerably, i.e. flooding of MEA is difficult. A GDL with a gradient of porosity is more favorable for liquid water discharge from catalyst layer into the gas channel; for the GDLs with the same equivalent porosity, the larger the gradient is, the more easily the liquid water is discharged. Of the computed cases, a GDL with a linear porosity 0.4x + 0.4 is the best.  相似文献

Water distribution in gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is determined by the pore morphology of the GDL as well as the flow conditions between the GDL and the gas flow field, where interconnect ribs and gas channels are placed side-by-side. The present study employs a steady state pore network model based on the invasion-percolation (IP) process to investigate the water transport in the under-rib region, in the under-channel region, and in between those regions inside the GDL. The interconnect rib partially blocks the outlet surface of the GDL, which forces water transport paths from the under-rib region to grow towards the gas channel through an extra IP process. The pore network model predicts spatially non-uniform water distributions inside the GDL due to the interconnect ribs, especially with an increased saturation level in the under-rib region. Parametric studies are also conducted to investigate the effects of several geometrical factors, such as width of the rib and the channel, thickness of the GDL, and water intruding condition at the inlet surface of the GDL.  相似文献

The transport of liquid water through an idealized 2-D reconstructed gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell is computed subject to hydrophobic boundary condition at the fibre–fluid interface. The effect of air flow, as would occur in parallel/serpentine/interdigitated type of flow fields, on the liquid water transport through the GDL, ejection into the channel in the form of water droplets and subsequent removal of the droplets has been simulated. Results show that typically water flow through the fibrous GDL occurs through a fingering and channelling type of mechanism. The presence of cross-flow of air has an effect both on the path created within the GDL and on the ejection of water into the channel in the form of droplets. A faster rate of liquid water evacuation through the GDL (i.e., more frequent ejection of water droplets) as well as less flooding of the void space results from the presence of cross-flow. These results agree qualitatively with experimental observations reported in the literature.  相似文献

The cross flow from channel to channel through gas diffusion layer (GDL) under the land could play an important role for water removal in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In this study, characteristics of liquid water removal from GDL have been investigated experimentally, through measuring unsteady pressure drop in a cell which has the GDL initially wet with liquid water. The thickness of GDL is carefully controlled by inserting various thicknesses of metal shims between the plates. It has been found that severe compression of GDL could result in excessive pressure drop from channel inlet to channel outlet. Removing liquid water from GDL by cross flow is difficult for GDL with high compression levels and for low inlet air flow rates. However, effective water removal can still be achieved at high compression levels of GDL if the inlet air flow rate is high. Based on different compressed GDL thicknesses, different GDL porosities and permeabilities were calculated and their effects on the characteristics of liquid water removal from GDL were evaluated. Visualization of liquid water transport has been conducted by using transparent flow channel, and liquid water removal from GDL under the land was observed for all the tested inlet air flow rates, which confirms that cross flow is practically effective to remove the liquid water accumulated in GDL under the land area.  相似文献

Flow maldistribution usually happens in PEM fuel cells when using common inlet and exit headers to supply reactant gases to multiple channels. As a result, some channels are flooded with more water and have less air flow while other channels are filled with less water but have excessive air flow. To investigate the impact of two-phase flow maldistribution on PEM fuel cell performance, a Volume of Fluid (VOF) model coupled with a 1D MEA model was employed to simulate two parallel channels. The slug flow pattern is mainly observed in the flow channels under different flow maldistribution conditions, and it significantly increases the gas diffusion layer (GDL) surface water coverage over the whole range of simulated current densities, which directly leads to poor fuel cell performance. Therefore, it is recommended that liquid and gas flow maldistribution in parallel channels should be avoided if possible over the whole range of operation. Increasing the gas stoichiometric flow ratio is not an effective method to mitigate the gas flow maldistribution, but adding a gas inlet resistance to the flow channel is effective in mitigating maldistribution. With a carefully selected value of the flow resistance coefficient, both the fuel cell performance and the gas flow distribution can be significantly improved without causing too much extra pressure drop.  相似文献

Liquid water management plays a significant role in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance, especially when the PEMFC is operating with high current density. Therefore, understanding of liquid water behavior and flooding process is a critical challenge that must be addressed. To overcome PEMFC durability problems, a liquid water flooding process is studied in the cathode side of a PEMFC with straight parallel channels and a porous layer using FLUENT® v6.3.26 software with a volume-of-fluid (VOF) algorithm and user-defined-function (UDF). The general process of liquid water flooding within this type of PEMFC cathode is investigated by analyzing the behavior of liquid water in porous layer and gas flow channels. Two important phenomena, the “first channel phenomenon” and the “last channel phenomenon”, and their effects on the flow distribution along different parallel channels are discussed.  相似文献

In this study, the lattice Boltzmann method was used to simulate the three-dimensional intrusion process of liquid water in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The GDL was reconstructed by the stochastic method and used to investigate fiber orientation's influence on liquid water transport in the GDL of a PEMFC. The fiber orientation can be described by the angle between a single fiber and the in-plane direction; three different samples were simulated for three different fiber orientation ranges. The simulated permeability correlated well with the anisotropic characteristics of reconstructed carbon papers. It was concluded that the fiber orientation had a significant effect on the liquid invasion pattern in the GDL by changing the pore shape and distribution of the GDL. The results indicated that the stochastically reconstructed GDL, taking into account the fiber orientation, better demonstrates the mass transport properties of the GDL.  相似文献

The droplet dynamics in the serpentine flow channel of a hydrogen fuel cell has been numerically investigated to obtain ideas for designing a serpentine channel with the aim of effectively preventing flooding. Three-dimensional two-phase flow simulations employing the volume of fluid (VOF) method have been performed. Liquid droplets emerging from four adjacent pores at the hydrophobic bottom wall are subjected to airflow in the bulk of the serpentine flow channel. The effects of contact angle variation of the channel walls on liquid water removal have been tested in terms of liquid water saturation and coverage of liquid water on the gas diffusion layer (GDL) surface. The numerical results show that the hybrid case, which consists of hydrophilic channel walls at the straight part and hydrophobic walls at the turning part of the serpentine flow channels, enhances water removal compared with two other cases in which the channel wall is homogeneously hydrophilic or hydrophobic. The three-dimensional visualization of liquid water droplets reveals that the hydrophobic wall at the turning part reduces the water saturation in the channel and the hydrophilic wall at the straight part prevents the liquid water from covering the GDL surface.  相似文献

Non‐uniform current distribution in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells results in local over‐heating, accelerated ageing, and lower power output than expected. This issue is quite critical when a fuel cell experiences water flooding. In this study, the performance of a PEM fuel cell is investigated under cathode flooding conditions. A two‐dimensional approach is proposed for a single PEM fuel cell based on conservation laws and electrochemical equations to provide useful insight into water transport mechanisms and their effect on the cell performance. The model results show that inlet stoichiometry and humidification, and cell operating pressure are important factors affecting cell performance and two‐phase transport characteristics. Numerical simulations have revealed that the liquid saturation in the cathode gas distribution layer (GDL) could be as high as 20%. The presence of liquid water in the GDL decreases oxygen transport and surface coverage of active catalyst, which in turn degrades the cell performance. The thermodynamic quality in the cathode flow channel is found to be greater than 99.7%, indicating that liquid water in the cathode gas channel exists in very small amounts and does not interfere with the gas phase transport. A detailed analysis of the operating conditions shows that cell performance should be optimized based on the maximum average current density achieved and the magnitude of its dispersion from its mean value. Severe flooding can be critical in a fuel cell vehicle operating at a high current density, and in a fuel cell vehicle at the initial stage of start up. It is often difficult to remove the condensed water from the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) of the fuel cell because of the surface tension between the water and the GDL. In this research, in order to remove the condensed water from the cathode GDL, a small amount of hydrogen was injected into the cathode reactant gases. The results showed that the hydrogen addition method successfully removed the liquid water from the cathode GDL. Water removal was verified for various hydrogen flow rates and hydrogen addition durations. Furthermore, the dew point temperature of the outlet gas at the cathode was observed to determine the amount of water removed from the cathode GDL. In addition, the water droplet in the cathode gas flow channel was visualized by using a transparent cell. Furthermore, degradation tests are also performed. Considering the degradation test, the hydrogen addition method is expected to be effective in mitigating cathode flooding.  相似文献

In proton exchange membrane fuel cells, the stacks of anode, cathode, and membrane layers including gas diffusion layer (GDL) are held together by a compressive force applied through a bipolar plate. In this work, we studied the electrical properties of a carbon fiber of a GDL under deformation using four-point measurement methods inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). We found out that through bending deformation the electrical resistivity of carbon fibers will be reduced. The drop in resistance during deformation may be the result of increasing conduction channels in the carbon fiber and parallel transport through them. Our finding offers a new insight on the effect of deformation on tuning the electrical properties of GDL materials.  相似文献

The flooding, especially in gas diffusion layer (GDL), is one of the critical issues to put PEMFC to practical use. However, the experimental data of the flooding in GDL is so insufficient that the optimization design related to the water management for GDL has not established. In this study we developed a method to estimate the water saturation, namely the ratio of liquid water to pore volume in GDL. We fabricated a simple interdigitated cell where the supply gas is enforced to flow under rib. This structure enables to estimate the liquid water ratio in GDL by the measurement of differential pressure through the cell. We operated the cell and measured the differential pressure, and succeeded in estimating the water saturation, which changed largely with changing cell operation condition. In addition to this deferential pressure measurement, we measured the ionic resistance in polymer electrolyte membrane by ac impedance method. We evaluated and discussed the influence of the water saturation on cell voltage.  相似文献

This study applied the pseudo-potential Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for investigating liquid water transport in the microporous layer (MPL) and gas diffusion layer (GDL) of polymer electrolyte fuel cell. The MPL and GDL reconstruction is performed by using a stochastic method. Unlike previous studies that examined the GDL as two distinct layers of hydrophilic and hydrophobic, this study considered the wettability heterogeneity. In the present study, some of the carbon fibers in the GDL are randomly considered hydrophilic. Moreover, liquid water transport in the compressed and uncompressed GDL with different hydrophilic fibers percentage are compared. The effect of hydrophilic fibers percentage and the compression ratio of the GDL on the liquid water saturation level, the steady-state time, and the formation and growth of droplets in the gas channel (GC) are investigated. The results indicated that more than 10% of hydrophilicity of the fibers lead to the formation of discontinuous water clusters. This phenomenon increased the steady-state time and water saturation level significantly. The simulation showed that compression increased the number of discontinuous water clusters in the GDL. The obtained results demonstrated that the hydrophilic fibers may have positive or negative effects on water transport in the GDL due to their location. In addition, this study indicated that for 10% of hydrophilic fibers with 10% compression, water saturation level and time required to reach steady-state decreased by 5.2% and 22% respectively compared to purely hydrophobic GDL.  相似文献
