Two flocks of Nicholas tom turkeys from separate farms with histories of above-average condemnations for turkey green-liver osteomyelitis complex (TOC) were studied throughout a 16-week growout. Fifty birds from each farm were necropsied each week for 15 weeks, and birds that had green livers, osteomyelitis in the proximal tibia, or swollen joints were cultured for aerobic bacteria along with an equal number of control birds. At processing, TOC lesions and green livers were obtained for bacterial culture and histopathology. Green-liver-associated TOC was not observed until the turkeys were 9 or 10 weeks of age. The incidence of TOC was higher on one farm, which also had a higher incidence of airsacculitis, higher early and weekly mortality, seroconversion to Newcastle disease virus and Mycoplasma meleagridis, and significantly higher average body weights, relative spleen weights, and relative liver weights. Both farms had a high incidence of intestinal lesions and infestation with Ascaridia dissimilis. Histological evaluation of green livers revealed hyperplasia of bile ducts, dilation of sinusoids, and pigment-containing Kupffer's cells, some of which stained positive for iron. The bacterial isolates most frequently cultured from bones and livers were pleomorphic gram-variable coccobacilli, which grew visible colonies only after a series of subcultures and extended incubation.  相似文献

Male turkeys of two commercial Large White strains (Nicholas 88, BUT 6) were subjected to growth restriction by means of reducing amino acid (AA) content of diets to a minimum of 75% of NRC (1994) suggested levels. There were three periods when diets containing 75% of NRC recommended AA for that age period were fed ad libitum: 0 to 3 wk, 0 to 6 wk, or 6 to 12 wk. A fourth (control) group was not restricted in AA content at any time. When turkeys were not fed the AA-restricted diets they were fed diets formulated to meet a minimum of 100, 110, or 120% of NRC (1994) AA recommendations, which resulted in a 3 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments with three AA levels by four restriction times. Four pens of 12 males each were fed each AA by restriction time combination. At 18 wk, all birds were scored individually for leg condition and representative samples of turkeys were processed for parts yield. Birds fed restricted diets from 0 to 6 or 6 to 12 wk had significantly lower BW at 18 wk than control birds. Birds fed the restricted diets from 0 to 3 wk did not differ significantly in 18-wk BW compared to control birds but the magnitude of difference was similar to that observed at the end of the restriction period. Feed utilization was not improved by early AA restriction. Restricting early growth resulted in a significantly higher incidence of birds with no leg disorders and a lower incidence of birds with moderate leg disorders than control birds. Feeding higher AA levels during realimentation resulted in a greater severity of leg disorders. Breast meat yield was depressed significantly as severity of early restriction increased. Increasing dietary AA above NRC (1994) recommended levels generally improved performance during realimentation but was not able to compensate for reduced gains during restriction.  相似文献

We characterized the lymphocyte subpopulations and investigated the effect of age on cellular and humoral immunity, development of lymphoid organs, and the relative proportions of CD4+ and CD8+ cells in turkeys. The mitogenic responses of peripheral T cells were poorly developed at hatch but developed rapidly after hatch and reached adult levels by 2 weeks-of-age. The average percentage of CD4+ cells was 45, 29.8, and 26.3 in the thymi, peripheral blood, and spleens, respectively, in turkeys. The mean percentage of CD8+ cells in the thymi, peripheral blood, and spleens of turkeys was 53.8, 13.6, and 15.5, respectively. Age did not influence the relative proportions of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in the spleens and peripheral blood of turkeys. The mean percentages of IgM+ cells in the bursae and spleens were 78.5 and 26.8, respectively. Day-old turkeys did not develop detectable antibodies to either thymus dependent or independent antigens. However, 2 week or older turkeys showed good humoral responses. Inoculation of BSA at hatch induced tolerance, whereas injection of SRBC did not. Analysis of relative organ weights of turkey lymphoid organs showed that spleens and thymi developed rapidly during the first week-of-age.  相似文献

Heat stress is one of the prominent ante-mortem stressors that elicits pale, soft, and exudative meat characteristics in stress-susceptible pigs. Industry reports of exudative turkey meat increase in the early summer with the onset of prolonged high temperatures. To study the effect of seasonal heat exposure on turkeys, 122 17-wk-old Nicholas tom turkeys were subjected in January either to growth temperatures of 16/24 C (night/day) (control) or to elevated temperatures of 32/38 C (night/day) (heat-stressed, HS). Turkeys were processed at 21 wk of age in a manner simulating commercial conditions. Pectoralis muscle samples were taken at 15 min (prechill), 2 h (postchill), and 24 h and analyzed for R-value, pH, and color. At 2 h, the remaining intact Pectoralis muscle was harvested, aged on ice for 23 h, and analyzed for drip loss and cook loss. Percentage mortality and carcass weights were not significantly different between treatments. By 15 min post-mortem, the HS birds exhibited a faster pH decline and had higher R-values that persisted through 24 h. The HS birds were also paler in color and exhibited increased drip loss and cook loss when compared to controls; however, expressible moisture was not different between treatments. In addition, the HS birds had a higher frequency of abnormal birds than controls when birds were grouped as normal (L* < 53) or abnormal (L* > 53).  相似文献

Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) effects on chicken growth and development are poorly understood. This study examined the effect of IGF-I on protein synthesis rates in various tissues in the male broiler chicken. At three weeks of age, osmotic minipumps were subcutaneously implanted in the scapular area. Chickens were infused with either chicken IGF-I (450 micrograms/kg BW/day) or saline. After treatment for 5 days, the chickens received a flooding dose of [3H]-phenylalanine, and were sacrificed 20 min later. Wing vein blood samples were taken at 0, 5, 10 and 20 min post-injection. The following tissues were removed and frozen for analysis: pectoralis muscle, gastrocnemius muscle, heart, liver, and small intestine. In vivo total protein synthesis measurements were made using the double-label technique. Contractile protein degradation was evaluated using intracellular free 3-methylhistidine concentrations in skeletal muscle. There were no significant differences in absolute or relative body growth rates over the treatment period. Skeletal muscle (pectoralis and gastrocnemius) weights were significantly decreased with IGF-I treatment, while heart weight was significantly increased. Plasma insulin levels were significantly lower in IGF-treated chickens compared to that in control birds. There was no effect of IGF-I on protein synthesis rates in any of the tissues examined. Intracellular free 3-methylhistidine concentrations were higher in both the gastrocnemius (17%) and pectoralis muscles (25%) of chickens treated with IGF-I. This data demonstrates that IGF-I may have an indirect effect to regulate muscle protein turnover rates.  相似文献

Virus-neutralizing monoclonal antibodies specific for the hexon of haemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV), a turkey adenovirus, were examined for their ability to confer passive protection against haemorrhagic enteritis (HE) in turkeys. A high dose of antibody prevented clinical disease and reduced virus replication in experimentally infected birds. This suggests that virus neutralization might be an important mechanism for protection against HE. Subsequently, the use of the hexon protein as a subunit vaccine was investigated by immunizing birds with affinity-purified HEV hexon. The birds were tested for the appearance of hexon-specific antibodies in their sera, for protection from clinical disease, and prevention of virus replication after challenge with virulent HEV (HEV-V). Regardless of whether birds were immunized with native or denatured hexon, high ELISA antibody titres were produced to each immunogen. A virus-neutralizing antibody response was induced by immunization with the native hexon but not by immunization with the denatured protein. All turkeys twice immunized with a dose of at least 1 microgram, and four out of five birds immunized with two doses of 0.3 micrograms of purified native hexon, were protected against virus-induced disease and virus replication. In contrast, birds inoculated with denatured hexon were not protected. These results demonstrate the importance of the native (trimeric) structure of the hexon protein for eliciting a protective immune response. The impact of these results on the development of a vaccine for HE in turkeys produced by recombinant DNA technology is discussed.  相似文献

The gene encoding the P6-like protein of Pasteurella multocida was cloned in the baculovirus expression system. Baculovirus-expressed recombinant protein was used to parenterally immunize 6-wk-old Nicholas broad-breasted white turkeys. Turkeys developed significant antibody titers to the recombinant protein as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Two weeks after the last immunizing injection, vaccinated turkeys were placed in contact with turkeys infected with P. multocida strain P1059, as were nonvaccinated control birds. No differences occurred in percent mortality between the two groups. We conclude that parenterally administered recombinant P6-like protein does not protect turkeys from avian cholera.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the effects of adherent Lactobacillus culture on growth performance, intestinal microbial population, and serum cholesterol level of broilers. Four dietary treatments, consisting of the basal diet (control), basal diet + 0.05, 0.10, or 0.15% Lactobacillus culture (LC), were fed to 2,000 Arbor Acres broiler chicks from 1 to 42 d of age (DOA). The chicks were randomly assigned to 40 cages (50 chicks per cage, 10 cages per diet). The experimental period was 42 d. Body weights and feed to gain ratio were measured at 21 and 42 DOA. The intestinal microbial populations and serum cholesterol levels were determined at 10, 20, 30, and 40 DOA. The results showed that body weights and feed to gain ratios were improved significantly (P < 0.05) when compared to control broilers for broilers fed diets containing 0.05 or 0.10% LC, but not 0.15% LC, at 21 and 42 DOA. Coliform counts in the cecum of birds receiving 0.05% LC at 10, 20, and 30 DOA, and 0.10% at 10 and 20 DOA were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those of the control birds. The total aerobes, total anaerobes, lactobacilli, and streptococci in the small intestines and ceca of the control birds were not significantly different from those of the treated groups. Serum cholesterol levels were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in broilers fed the three diets containing LC at 30 DOA, and in the birds fed 0.05 or 0.10% LC at 20 DOA.  相似文献

The role of mast cells, potential mediators of mucosal immunity and inflammation, was studied morphologically in the rectal mucosa in two acute diarrheal diseases, cholera and shigellosis. Quantitation of mucosal mast cells showed that they were significantly higher in the deeper lamina propria where blood vessels and nerves were more abundant. There was no difference in mast cell counts or degranulation in the mucosa in both groups of patients and controls. Intraepithelial mast cells were decreased in the patients. The prevalence of lipid bodies was significantly higher in mast cells from patients with cholera and shigellosis (P < 0.01). These findings suggest that mast cell populations are more dense around blood vessels and nerves and that inflammatory mediators derived from arachidonic acid metabolites, as indicated by the lipid bodies, are the response of mast cells to the alterations in diarrhea, despite differences in the etiology of diarrhea.  相似文献

1. The effects of relative humidity on growth rate and thermoregulation at high ambient temperature were evaluated in turkeys. Male turkeys were exposed to ambient temperature (Ta) of 35 degrees C and relative humidity (RH) of 40% to 75% and 50% to 85%, at ages of 13 to 19 weeks (trial 1) and 10 to 15 weeks (trial 2), respectively. 2. Body weight and food intake in both trials increased as RH increased up to 70% to 75%. When RH increased further to 80% to 85% (Trial 2) both body weight and food intake declined significantly. 3. Blood CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) did not change significantly at different RHs (trial 1). However, in trial 2 it dropped significantly at 80% to 85% RH. This response coincided with an increase in blood pH. 4. The effect of RH on body temperature (Tb) was not significant in either trial. 5. Triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations increased with the increase in RH up to 70% to 75% RH (trials 1 and 2). A significant decrease was observed when RH was further increased to 80% to 85% RH (Trial 2). Positive linear correlations between T3 and food intake or weight gain were observed in both trials. 6. The results indicate that turkeys can thermoregulate efficiently in the face of extreme changes in RH and that only at high RH (above 75%) did the performance of turkeys deteriorate.  相似文献

Elevation in apparent blood viscosity may enhance the pulmonary hypertension that leads to pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) and ascites in fast-growing broilers. We investigated the importance of packed cell volume (PCV) and shear rate in modifying apparent viscosity of the blood from broilers assigned to normal, preascites, and ascites groups. Apparent viscosity of broiler blood increased at all shear rates as PCV increased; the increase in apparent viscosity became greater as the shear rate decreased at PCV above 0.30. At the PCV of normal broilers (0.30 or below), apparent viscosity was nearly shear rate independent, at least down to 11.25 per second, the lowest shear rate studied. Apparent viscosity, at any given PCV and shear rate, was significantly lower in the blood of birds with ascites than in normal birds; however, the relative viscosity was not different between those groups, indicating that lower plasma viscosity in the birds with PHS was responsible for the finding. The results show that the principal factor responsible for increased apparent viscosity of blood in birds with PHS is the increase in PCV. The increased resistance to flow of blood as the result of higher blood viscosity may contribute to the pulmonary hypertension.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the physical, chemical, and microbial properties of turkey cecal droppings and relate them to intake of common dietary components, namely fat, fiber, and the anticoccidial, monensin. Experiment 1 involved collection and analysis of physical and chemical properties of cecal and regular droppings from commercial turkey flocks. Experiment 2 tested the effect of dietary fat, fiber, and monensin on growth performance and cecal activity in male turkeys. Compared to regular excreta, cecal droppings analyzed in Experiment 1 were higher in viscosity and fat content, and lower in dry matter, nitrogen, and fiber content (P < 0.05). High dietary fiber and fat significantly (P < 0.05) improved growth performance in Experiment 2. Prolonged feeding of monensin significantly (P < 0.05) reduced cecal evacuation. Results of chemical composition showed that higher dietary fat and fiber significantly (P < 0.01) reduced the fat percentage of cecal contents, whereas prolonged feeding of monensin increased the fat in both cecal contents and droppings. There was no significant effect of any of the treatments on pH, viscosity, and microbial counts of cecal contents. There is the need to identify and characterize the compound responsible for the high viscosity of cecal droppings.  相似文献

1. Heterozygous naked neck birds were raised under natural spring (average 21.2 degrees C) and summer temperatures (average 27.1 degrees C) to investigate the influence of dietary energy on broiler performance, carcase yield and nutrient composition of breast meat. 2. Birds were fed on a low energy diet of 12.12 MJ ME/kg, a medium energy diet of 12.96 MJ ME/kg and a high energy diet of 13.79 MJ ME/kg with 2 protein concentrations per energy treatment, 230 and 200 g/kg, from 0 to 3 and 3 to 7 weeks of age, respectively. 3. Summer rearing resulted in a decrease in body weight, body weight gain, carcase weight and carcase part yields of birds. 4. Increasing dietary energy from 12.12 to 13.79 MJ ME/kg increased body weight at 3 and 7 weeks, body weight gains from 0 to 3 and 3 to 7 weeks, carcase weights and relative abdominal fat weights of birds in a linear manner. There was no effect of dietary energy on the nutrient composition of breast meat. 5. It was concluded that there was no differences in dietary energy requirements of heterozygous naked neck birds when grown under natural optimum (21.2 degrees C) and summer temperatures (27.1 degrees C).  相似文献

A study was conducted comparing ovary and oviduct development following photostimulation in two lines of turkey breeder stocks (female line and male line). Birds were euthanatized for assessment of reproductive organ morphology at 3-d intervals following photostimulation (203 d of age) to 245 d and on the day following their first oviposition. The age at first oviposition was similar for both lines. Male line birds were 3 to 4 kg heavier than female line birds throughout the study, but had lower abdominal fat pad weights when expressed as a percentage of BW. Female line birds had significantly more total carcass lipid as a percentage of BW than male line birds (24.76 vs 22.79%, respectively). Male line birds had significantly more large ovarian follicles with a greater proportion in a triple or greater hierarchical arrangement at first egg. To determine the incidence of unreconciled ovulations (presumed to be internally ovulated follicles and defined as ovulations occurring prior to first oviposition), postovulatory follicles on the ovary were reconciled with observed ovipositions and the developing eggs that were in the oviduct at the time of study. On average, male line hens had 3.0 unreconciled postovulatory follicles at first egg, whereas the female line hens had 1.6. The incidence of birds with physical remnants of internal ovulation was correlated (r = 0.44) to the number of unreconciled ovulations. The developing oviduct of the female line birds reached its mature weight (84.8 g) 3 d earlier than the ovary did. The developing ovary and oviduct of the male line hens reached their mature weights on the same day. The development of the male line oviduct is seemingly accelerated relative to that of the ovary, resulting in lost ovulations early in lay.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine safety, anesthetic variables, and cardiopulmonary effects of i.v. infusion of propofol for induction and maintenance of anesthesia in wild turkeys. ANIMALS: 10 healthy, adult wild turkeys. PROCEDURE: Anesthesia was induced by i.v. administration of propofol (5 mg/kg of body weight) over 20 seconds and was maintained for 30 minutes by constant i.v. infusion of propofol at a rate of 0.5 mg/kg/min. Heart and respiratory rates, arterial blood pressures, and arterial blood gas tensions were obtained prior to propofol administration (baseline values) and again at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes after induction of anesthesia. All birds were intubated immediately after induction of anesthesia, and end-tidal CO2 concentration was determined at the same time intervals. Supplemental oxygen was not provided. RESULTS: Apnea was observed for 10 to 30 seconds after propofol administration, which induced a decrease in heart rate; however, the changes were not significant. Compared with baseline values, respiratory rate was significantly decreased at 4 minutes after administration of propofol and thereafter. Systolic, mean, and diastolic pressures decreased over the infusion period, but the changes were not significant. Mean arterial blood pressure decreased by 30% after 15 minutes of anesthesia; end-tidal CO2 concentration increased from baseline values after 30 minutes; PO2 was significantly decreased at 5 minutes after induction and thereafter; PCO2 was significantly (P < 0.05) increased after 15 minutes of anesthesia; and arterial oxygen saturation was significantly (P < 0.05) decreased at the end of anesthesia. Two male turkeys developed severe transient hypoxemia, 1 at 5 and the other at 15 minutes after induction. Time to standing after discontinuation of propofol infusion was 11 +/- 6 minutes. Recovery was smooth and unremarkable. CONCLUSION: Propofol is an effective agent for i.v. induction and maintenance of anesthesia in wild turkeys, and is useful for short procedures or where the use of inhalational agents is contraindicated.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to quantify genetic differences in response to dietary protein level of male vs female broilers. Broilers (1 d old) from a "high-yield" strain cross (Ross x Ross 208) and a "fast-growing" strain cross (Peterson x Arbor Acres) were placed on fresh pine shavings in floor pens. From Day 0 to 18, all birds were fed a 23% CP starter diet. During Days 18 to 53 male birds were fed either a 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, or 26% CP diet (3,200 kcal ME/kg) and female birds were fed the 16, 20, or 24% CP diet. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were noted in the performance of the different strains. Ross x Ross 208 male birds had a higher body weight (3.37 vs 3.16 kg), higher feed intake (7.08 vs 6.78 kg), higher breast yield (31.76 vs 29.25%), higher carcass yield (73.90 vs 71.85%), and a lower adjusted feed conversion ratio (FCR; 2.10 vs 2.16 g:g) than Peterson x Arbor Acres males at 53 d of age. As compared to Peterson x Arbor Acres females, Ross x Ross 208 female broilers also had a higher body weight (2.68 vs 2.55 kg), higher breast meat yield (33.61 vs 30.80%), higher carcass yield (75.31 vs 73.91%), and lower adjusted FCR (1.97 vs 2.04 g:g). Qualitative differences in the response of these strains were confirmed and better qualitative data is presented that can be used to predict the important output parameters from the import inputs in broiler production.  相似文献

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed at weekly intervals in 10 Thoroughbred horses in race training (group 1) and in 4 rested horses (group 2) for 10 weeks. Lavages were continued on a weekly basis in 4 group 1 horses for an additional 9 weeks (group 3). Cytological analysis of samples included leukocyte counts, erythrocyte counts, differential leukocyte counts, and haemosiderophage score. The mean leukocyte concentration was significantly lower in group 1 (92.1 +/- 4.6 cells/microL) when compared with group 2 (133.5 +/- 8.2 cells/microL), P = 0.037. The differential leukocyte data were not significantly different between groups. There was a large amount of variability in the percentage of macrophages and lymphocytes in the differential counts over time with no obvious trends. The proportion of neutrophils demonstrated a tendency to decrease over time for both groups 1 and 2. Erythrocyte counts and haemosiderin scores were significantly higher in the exercising group than the rested horses. Neither exercise nor the technique itself evoked an inflammatory response in the BAL fluid.  相似文献

We studied in vitro cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with primary and recurrent hydatid disease when cells were incubated with mitogen (PHA) and antigen from hydatid cyst fluid (HCFAg); levels of specific IgE, IgG4 and eosinophil counts were also measured in sera. When specifically stimulated, PBMC from patients produced higher levels of IL-2 (P < 0.02), IFN-gamma (P < 0.0028) and IL-5 (P < 0.01) than those from uninfected donors, whereas IL-10 levels were comparable. Notably, IL-5 was also produced in higher levels (P < 0.01) by PBMC from patients when incubated with PHA. The IL-5:IFN-gamma ratio was significantly greater (P < 0.02) when measured in response to specific stimulation than it was for PHA-stimulated cultures. These cytokine data suggest a bias towards a Th2-response which is in agreement with the high levels of IgG4 and IgE observed. The polarized response appears to be related to clinical status, as differences between patients with primary infection and those with relapse of disease were demonstrated, with significantly higher levels of IgE (P < 0.003), IgG4 (P < 0.04) titres and eosinophil counts (P < 0.04) in the latter; in addition a tendency to an increased production of IL-5 buy lower IFN-gamma was also observed in this group. These results merit further study as they are suggestive of a putative role of Th2-like responses in susceptibility to reinfection by E. granulosus.  相似文献

To determine whether a relationship exists between long bone distortion and tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), the hock joints of Large White commercial male turkeys were examined using low intensity x-ray imaging (hand-held lixiscope). All lame birds with long bone distortion and 96 control birds without lameness were examined at 8.3 and 12.3 wk of age for TD lesions using a lixiscope. Results indicated that the incidence of TD was less than 2% at 8.3 wk of age. The incidence increased to 21% by 12.3 wk of age. The TD lesions at 12 wk of age were considered mild covering only one-fourth of the growth plate. Chi-square analysis indicated that control turkeys without long bone distortion were just as likely to have TD lesions as were lame turkeys with long bone distortion. Under the conditions of the present experiment, TD did not appear to be a significant skeletal problem in Large White commercial male turkeys prior to 12.3 wk of age. Only 5 out of 37 (14%) toms with long bone distortion at 12.3 wk of age had TD lesions, suggesting that the valgus-varus deformity may be independent of TD.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigated the influence of dietary protein restriction stress on adrenal steroidogenic function of the domestic turkey. Immature male turkeys (2 weeks old) were fed isocaloric synthetic diets containing either 28% (control) or 8% (restriction) soy protein for 4 weeks. Trunk plasma was processed for the determination of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), corticosterone, aldosterone, and total 3, 5, 3'-triiodothyronine (T3). In addition, adrenal glands were processed for the isolation of defined, density-separable, adrenal steroidogenic cell subpopulations: three low-density adrenal steroidogenic cell subpopulations [LDAC-1 (rho = 1.0350-1.0490 g/ml). LDAC-2 (rho = 1.0490-1.0570 g/ml), and LDAC 3 (rho = 1.0370-1.0585 g/ml)] and a high-density subpopulation [HDAC (rho = 1.0590-1.0720 g/ml)], and the steroidogenic function of these cell subpopulations was evaluated. Protein restriction did not influence plasma ACTH However, it increased relative adrenal weight (mg/100 g body wt) (+37.8%) and plasma corticosterone (+317%). By contrast, it depressed plasma aldosterone (-51.2%). In addition, it caused a modest depression in plasma T3 (-25.9%). At the cellular level, protein restriction induced panhypofunction. Basal corticosteroid (aldosterone and corticosterone) production values of LDAC-1, -2, and -3 and HDAC from protein-restricted birds were, respectively, 42.9, 47.9, 30.8, and 57.5% less than those of corresponding cell subpopulations from control birds. In addition, maximal corticosteroid production values of LDAC-1, -2, and -3 and HDAC from protein-restricted birds, in response to ACTH, angiotensin II (AngII), and 25-hydroxycholesterol support, were depressed by 56.8, 55.1, 22.7, and 42.9%, respectively. Interestingly, LDAC-3 was relatively refractory to the influence of this stressor. By contrast, there was the lack of a concentration-dependent aldosterone response of LDAC-1 and -2 to AngII with protein restriction. This was not due to a failure in cell function since aldosterone responses of these cell subpopulations to ACTH and to 25-hydroxycholesterol support were apparent. In addition, the concentration of AngII receptors of cell subpopulations from protein-restricted turkeys, if anything, was greater than that of cell subpopulations from control turkeys. Protein restriction also altered the cell subpopulation composition of the adrenal gland: compared to control, it decreased the proportion of LDAC-2 by 42.3% and increased the proportion of LDAC-3 and HDAC by 68.7 and 302%, respectively. Thus, dietary protein restriction induces adrenal steroidogenic hypofunction in turkeys. In addition, the present study suggests that this nutritional stressor induces marked remodeling of the steroidogenic tissue in the turkey adrenal gland.  相似文献
