Differential thermal analysis (DTA), high-temperature water-quench (WQ) experiments, and optical and electron microscopy were used to establish the near-solidus and solidification microstructures in PH 13-8 Mo. On heating at a rate of 0. 33 °C/s, this alloy begins to transform from austenite to δ-ferrite at ≈1350 °C. Transformation is complete by ≈1435 °C. The solidus is reached at ≈1447 °C, and the liquidus is ≈1493 °C. On cooling from the liquid state at a rate of 0. 33 °C/s, solidification is completed as δ-ferrite with subsequent transformation to austenite beginning in the solid state at ≈1364 °C. Insufficient time at temperature is available for complete transformation and the resulting room-temperature microstructure consists of matrix martensite (derived from the shear decomposition of the austenite) and residual δ-ferrite. The residual δ-ferrite in the DTA sample is enriched in Cr (≈16 wt pct), Mo (≈4 wt pct), and Al (≈1. 5 wt pct) and depleted in Ni (≈4 wt pct) relative to the martensite (≈12. 5 wt pct Cr, ≈2 wt pct Mo, ≈1 wt pct Al, ≈9 wt pct Ni). Solid-state transformation of δσ γ was found to be quench-rate sensitive with large grain, fully ferritic microstructures undergoing a massive transformation as a result of water quenching, while a diffusionally controlled Widmanstätten structure was produced in air-cooled samples.  相似文献

In-situ high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments with high temporal resolution during rapid cooling (280 °C s−1) and isothermal heat treatments (at 450 °C, 500 °C, and 550 °C for 30 minutes) were performed to study austenite decomposition in two commercial high-strength low-alloy steels. The rapid phase transformations occurring in these types of steels are investigated for the first time in-situ, aiding a detailed analysis of the austenite decomposition kinetics. For the low hardenability steel with main composition Fe-0.08C-1.7Mn-0.403Si-0.303Cr in weight percent, austenite decomposition to polygonal ferrite and bainite occurs already during the initial cooling. However, for the high hardenability steel with main composition Fe-0.08C-1.79Mn-0.182Si-0.757Cr-0.094Mo in weight percent, the austenite decomposition kinetics is retarded, chiefly by the Mo addition, and therefore mainly bainitic transformation occurs during isothermal holding; the bainitic transformation rate at the isothermal holding is clearly enhanced by lowered temperature from 550 °C to 500 °C and 450 °C. During prolonged isothermal holding, carbide formation leads to decreased austenite carbon content and promotes continued bainitic ferrite formation. Moreover, at prolonged isothermal holding at higher temperatures some degenerate pearlite form.

In an attempt to understand the role of retained austenite on the cryogenic toughness of a ferritic Fe-Mn-AI steel, the mechanical stability of austenite during cold rolling at room temperature and tensile deformation at ambient and liquid nitrogen temperature was investigated, and the microstructure of strain-induced transformation products was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The volume fraction of austenite increased with increasing tempering time and reached 54 pct after 650 °C, 1-hour tempering and 36 pct after 550 °C, 16-hour tempering. Saturation Charpy impact values at liquid nitrogen temperature were increased with decreasing tempering temperature, from 105 J after 650 °C tempering to 220 J after 550 °C tempering. The room-temperature stability of austenite varied significantly according to the + γ) region tempering temperature;i.e., in 650 °C tempered specimens, 80 to 90 pct of austenite were transformed to lath martensite, while in 550 °C tempered specimens, austenite remained untransformed after 50 pct cold reductions. After tensile fracture (35 pct tensile strain) at -196 °C, no retained austenite was observed in 650 °C tempered specimens, while 16 pct of austenite and 6 pct of e-martensite were observed in 550 °C tempered specimens. Considering the high volume fractions and high mechanical stability of austenite, the crack blunting model seems highly applicable for improved cryogenic toughness in 550 °C tempered steel. The isothermal transformation kinetics of austenite decomposition in Fe-0.4C-2.78Mn-1.81Si was analyzed by an electrical resistivity technique in the temperature interval 723 K to 418 K (450 °C to 145 °C). The analysis of transformation kinetics of the bainite transformation was performed using the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolgomorov (JMAK) and Austin–Rickett (AR) approaches. The kinetic parameters, the reaction constant n, rate constant k = k(T), and apparent activation energy Q were evaluated for isothermal transformations below and above the martensite-start temperature M S  = 548 K (275 °C), which was determined experimentally. The formation of strain-induced martensite, which starts to accompany the bainite transformation at just above M S , increases the rate of transformation and decreases the apparent activation energy of austenite decomposition.  相似文献

The microstructure and phase stability of the Fe-15Mn-7Si-9Cr-5Ni stainless steel shape memory alloy in the temperature range of 600 °C to 1200 °C was investigated using optical and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and chemical analysis techniques. The microstructural studies show that an austenite single-phase field exists in the temperature range of 1000 °C to 1100 °C, above 1100 °C, there exists a three-phase field consisting of austenite, δ-ferrite, and the (Fe,Mn)3Si intermetallic phase; within the temperature range of 700 °C to 1000 °C, a two-phase field consisting of austenite and the Fe5Ni3Si2 type intermetallic phase exists; and below 700 °C, there exists a single austenite phase field. Apart from these equilibrium phases, the austenite grains show the presence of athermal ɛ martensite. The athermal α′ martensite has also been observed for the first time in these stainless steel shape memory alloys and is produced through the γ-ɛ-α′ transformation sequence.  相似文献

Two ferritic stainless steels (≈16.5 mass pct Cr) were hot-rolled using seven subsequent passes. The first sample was rolled within the range 1280 °C to 750 °C,i.e., the deformation started in the ferritic region. The second sample was rolled within the range 1080 °C to 770 °C,i.e., the deformation started in the ferritic-austenitic region. In both cases, up to 40 vol pct of the ferrite transformed into austenite during hot rolling. During the last passes, the austenite transformed into cubic martensite. After hot rolling, these former austenitic regions were identified using a selective etching technique and examined using single orientation determination in the scanning electron microscope. The regions which remained ferritic throughout the hot-rolling process were investigated as well. Whereas the texture of the martensite considerably depended on the hot-rolling conditions, especially on the temperature and on the intervals between the rollings, the texture of the ferrite was less affected. The textures of the martensite were interpreted in terms of the crystallographic transformation rules between austenite and martensite. The textures of the ferrite were discussed in terms of recovery and recrystallization. M. The role of large prior austenite grain sizes in promoting low ductility of fully pearlitic eutectoid steels has been investigated. Independent variation of the pearlite interlamellar spacing,S p, and the prior austenite grain size enabled determination of the microstructural feature controlling ductility in these steels. Tests on a variety of specimens over the temperature range —196 °C to 310 °C showed that specimens heat treated to contain a large prior austenite grain size consistently exhibited lower fracture strains (i.e., ductility), regardless of the type of fracture present, than did fine grained specimens. A mathematical model incorporating both heat transfer and the transformation of austenite to pearlite in eutectoid carbon steel rods has been developed. A computer program based on the implicit finite-difference technique has been written which permits the temperature distribution and fraction of austenite transformed to be predicted as a function of cooling conditions, rod diameter and the transformation characteristics of the steel. The program takes into account the temperature-dependent heat transfer and thermophysical properties; and stresses the importance of the enthalpy of transformation. The model has been checked for internal consistency with theoretical equations, and model predictions have been compared to published industrial data for rod cooling in water at 100 °. The effect on the temperature distribution and fraction of austenite transformed of several variables,viz., rod diameter, starting temperature, heat transfer conditions, transformation characteristics and quenchant temperature, has been predicted using the model. The range of variables studied are typical of those found in industrial processes such as patenting and controlled cooling. Use of the model in the design of controlled cooling processes and in coping with problems such as segregation in wire rods is currently under study. PRAKASH K. This article is Part II of a two-part series on the thermal analysis of the arc welding process. In Part I, general solutions for the temperature rise distribution in arc welding of short workpieces were developed based on Jaeger’s classical moving heat source theory for a plane disc heat source with a pseudo-Gaussian distribution of heat intensity and constant values of thermophysical properties at one temperature (400 °C). This was extended in this investigation (Part II) to consider different thermophysical properties at different temperatures (from room temperature (25 °C) to 1300 °C) for a mild steel work material. The objective is to develop a rationale for the selection of an appropriate temperature for the choice of the thermophysical properties for the thermal analysis of arc welding. Since the quality of the weld for a given work material depends both on the thermodynamic and kinetic considerations, namely, the maximum temperatures and the temperature gradients (cooling rates) in appropriate sections of the welded part including the weld bead and the heat-affected zone (HAZ), they were determined in this investigation. The main output parameters from a thermal point of view are the widths and the depths of the melt pool (MP) and the HAZ at the weld joint. Although the length of the weld pool is also a consideration, if the entire length participates in the welding process, which is generally the case, then this is not such an important consideration. It is found that for welds produced in a conductive mode only (i.e., not considering the case of deep penetrating welds produced with keyhole mode), the values of the widths and the depths of the MP and the HAZs are nearly the same (within 10 to 20 pct), irrespective of the values of thermal properties for temperatures in the range of 400 °C to 1300 °C. Hence, the emphasis on the need to consider variable thermal properties with temperature in welding appears to be somewhat exaggerated. Also, based on the thermal analysis of the welding process, it appears that the room-temperature thermophysical properties may not be appropriate, as rightly pointed out by other researchers. The thermal history and the cooling rates were also determined analytically for arc welding of long workpieces, where quasi-steady-state conditions are established and the boundary effects can be ignored, as well as short workpieces, where transient conditions prevail and boundary effects need to be considered. This information can then be used in the appropriate time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram for a given steel work material to investigate the nature of the metallurgical transformation and the resulting microstructure in the welding process both in the weld bead and in the adjacent HAZs on either side.  相似文献

The stability of reversely formed austenite and related mechanism of transformation were investigated against temperature and time in an Fe-9.6Ni-7.1Mn (at. pct) martensitic steel during intercritical annealing at a dual-phase (α + γ) region. Dilatometry, electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD), atom probe tomography (APT), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the mechanism of reverse transformation. It was found that under intercritical annealing at 853 K (580 °C), when the heating rate is 20 K/s (20 °C/s), reverse transformation takes place through a mixed diffusion control mechanism, i.e., controlled by bulk diffusion and diffusion along the interface, where Ni controls the diffusion as its diffusivity is lower than that of Mn in the martensite and austenite. Increasing the intercritical annealing to 873 K (600 °C) at an identical heating rate of 20 K/s (20 °C/s) showed that reverse transformation occurs through a sequential combination of both martensitic and diffusional mechanisms. The transition temperature from diffusional to martensitic transformation was obtained close to 858 K (585 °C). Experimental results revealed that the austenite formed by the diffusional mechanism at 853 K (580 °C) mainly remains untransformed after cooling to ambient temperature due to the enrichment with Ni and Mn. It was also found that the stability of the reversely formed austenite by martensitic mechanism at 873 K (600 °C) is related to grain refinement.  相似文献

The phases which are present within the dendritic core region during the solidification of AISI type M2 high speed steel (6 W, 5 Mo, 4 Cr, 2 V) were studied and characterized by metallography and quantitative microprobe analysis. A series of samples were quenched from various temperatures during solidification, “freezing in” the different solidification phases. The first phase observed to solidify in M2 is ferrite which contains very little carbon. As the solidification process continues, most of the liquid surrounding the ferrite transforms to austenite by virtue of a peritectic reaction which initiates at 1330°C,(L + FA). The ferritic cores also transform at around 1330°C into an austenite plus car-bide aggregate. By the time the ingot cools to 1255°C, the carbides at the center of the dendrites dissolve completely, leaving an austenitic phase of uniform carbon and alloy content. At temperatures below the solidus, very fine carbides precipitate from the aus-tenite. No eutectoid decomposition by products such as those commonly observed in Tl tool steel were observed in these specimens nor in samples from a commercial ingot. Mechanisms of tempered martensite embrittlement in low alloy steels   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An investigation into the mechanisms of tempered martensite embrittlement (TME), also know as “500°F” or “350°C” or one-step temper embrittlement, has been made in commercial, ultra-high strength 4340 and Si-modified 4340 (300-M) alloy steels, with particular focus given to the role of interlath films of retained austenite. Studies were performed on the variation of i) strength and toughness, and ii) the morphology, volume fraction and thermal and mechanical stability of retained austenite, as a function of tempering temperature, following oil-quenching, isothermal holding, and continuous air cooling from the austenitizing temperature. TME was observed as a decrease in bothK Ic and Charpy V-notch impact energy after tempering around 300°C in 4340 and 425°C in 300-M, where the mechanisms of fracture were either interlath cleavage or largely transgranular cleavage. The embrittlement was found to be concurrent with the interlath precipitation of cementite during temperingand the consequent mechanical instability of interlath films of retained austenite during subsequent loading. The role of silicon in 300-M was seen to retard these processes and hence retard TME to higher tempering temperatures than for 4340. The magnitude of the embrittlement was found to be significantly greater in microstructures containing increasing volume fractions of retained austenite. Specifically, in 300-M the decrease inK Ic, due to TME, was a 5 MPa√m in oil quenched structures with less than 4 pct austenite, compared to a massive decrease of 70 MPa√m in slowly (air) cooled structures containing 25 pct austenite. A complete mechanism of tempered martensite embrittlement is proposed involving i) precipitation of interlath cementite due to partial thermal decomposition of interlath films of retained austenite, and ii) subsequent deformation-induced transformation on loading of remaining interlath austenite, destabilized by carbon depletion from carbide precipitation. The deterioration in toughness, associated with TME, is therefore ascribed to the embrittling effect of i) interlath cementite precipitates and ii) an interlath layer of mechanically-transformed austenite,i.e., untempered martensite. The presence of residual impurity elements in prior austenite grain boundaries, having segregated there during austenitization, may accentuate this process by providing an alternative weak path for fracture. Formation mechanism of the reversed austenite of Cr15 super martensitic stainless steel (SMSS) alloyed with copper after high temperature tempering was investigated by means of thermo‐calc software, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The mechanical properties of the SMSS were also tested. The experimental results show that the reversed austenite with low dislocation density is formed at high temperature tempering processing. The transformation of the martensite to reversed austenite is a diffused phase transformation, and the growth of the reversed austenite is closely related to the diffusion process of Ni. The bulk reversed austenite with large amount of stacking faults is formed with the increase of the tempering temperature. The volume fraction of reversed austenite increases at first and then decreases with increasing tempering temperature, and the maximum amount of the reversed austenite is obtained at 650°C. The reversed austenite is unstable at the tempering temperature above 650°C and the martensitic phase transformation will occur at the following cooling process. The mechanical properties of Cr15 super martensitic stainless steel are significantly influenced by the volume fraction of reversed austenite.  相似文献

High Si contents in nodular cast irons lead to a significant volume fraction of retained austenite in the material after the austempering treatment. In the present work, the influence of the amount and morphology of this phase on the mechanical properties (proof stress, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), elongation, and toughness) has been analyzed for different austempering conditions. After 300 °C isothermal treatments at intermediate times, the austenite is plastically stable at room temperature and contributes, together with the bainitic ferrite, to the proof stress and the toughness of the material. For austenite volume fractions higher than 25 pct, the proof stress is controlled by this phase and the toughness depends mainly on the stability of γ. In these conditions (370 °C and 410 °C treatments), the present material exhibits a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, which leads to an improvement in ductility. It is shown that the strain level necessary to initiate the martensitic transformation induced by deformation depends on the carbon content of the austenite. The martensite formed under TRIP conditions can be of two different types: “autotempered” plate martensite, which forms at room temperature from an austenite with a quasi-coherent epsilon carbide precipitation, and lath martensite nucleated at twin boundaries and twin intersections.  相似文献

Steels with compositions that are hot rolled and cooled to exhibit high strength and good toughness often require a bainitic microstructure. This is especially true for plate steels for linepipe applications where strengths in excess of 690 MPa (100 ksi) are needed in thicknesses between approximately 6 and 30 mm. To ensure adequate strength and toughness, the steels should have adequate hardenability (C. E. >0.50 and Pcm >0.20), and are thermomechanically controlled processed, i.e., controlled rolled, followed by interrupted direct quenching to below the Bs temperature of the pancaked austenite. Bainite formed in this way can be defined as a polyphase mixture comprised a matrix phase of bainitic ferrite plus a higher carbon second phase or micro-constituent which can be martensite, retained austenite, or cementite, depending on circumstances. This second feature is predominately martensite in IDQ steels. Unlike pearlite, where the ferrite and cementite form cooperatively at the same moving interface, the bainitic ferrite and MA form in sequence with falling temperature below the Bs temperature or with increasing isothermal holding time. Several studies have found that the mechanical properties may vary strongly for different types of bainite, i.e., different forms of bainitic ferrite and/or MA. Thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP) has been shown to be an important way to control the microstructure and mechanical properties in low carbon, high strength steel. This is especially true in the case of bainite formation, where the complexity of the austenite-bainite transformation makes its control through disciplined processing especially important. In this study, a low carbon, high manganese steel containing niobium was investigated to better understand the effects of austenite conditioning and cooling rates on the bainitic phase transformation, i.e., the formation of bainitic ferrite plus MA. Specimens were compared after transformation from recrystallized, equiaxed austenite to deformed, pancaked austenite, which were followed by seven different cooling rates ranging between 0.5 K/s (0.5 °C/s) and 40 K/s (40 °C/s). The CCT curves showed that the transformation behaviors and temperatures varied with starting austenite microstructure and cooling rate, resulting in different final microstructures. The EBSD results and the thermodynamics and kinetics analyses show that in low carbon bainite, the nucleation rate is the key factor that affects the bainitic ferrite morphology, size, and orientation. However, the growth of bainite is also quite important since the bainitic ferrite laths apparently can coalesce or coarsen into larger units with slower cooling rates or longer isothermal holding time, causing a deterioration in toughness. This paper reviews the formation of bainite in this steel and describes and rationalizes the final microstructures observed, both in terms of not only formation but also for the expected influence on mechanical properties.  相似文献

As part of a program studying weldability of Ni-base superalloys, results of an integrated analytical approach are used to generate a constitution diagram for INCONEL 718* in the temperature range associated with solidification. Differential thermal analysis of wrought material and optical and scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and analytical electron microscopy of gas tungsten arc welds are used in conjunction with solidification theory to generate data points for this diagram. The important features of the diagram are an austenite (γ)/Laves phase eutectic which occurs at ≈19.1 wt pct Nb between austenite containing ≈9.3 wt pct Nb and a Laves phase which contains ≈22.4 wt pct Nb. The distribution coefficient for Nb was found to be ≈0.5. The solidification sequence of INCONEL 718 was found to be (1) proeutectic γ, followed by (2) a γ/NbC eutectic at ≈1250°C, followed by (3) continued γ solidification, followed by (4) a γ/Laves phase eutectic at ≈1200°C. An estimate of the volume fraction eutectic is made using the Scheil solidification model, and the fraction of each phase in the eutectic is calculatedvia the lever rule. These are compared with experimentally determined values and found to be in good agreement.  相似文献

The solidification of undercooled Ni-4.5 wt pct B alloy melt was investigated by using the glass fluxing technique. The alloy melt was undercooled up to ΔT p ~ 245 K (245 °C), where a mixture of α-Ni dendrite, Ni3B dendrite, rod eutectic, and precipitates was obtained. If ΔT p < 175 K ± 10 K (175 °C ± 10 °C), the solidification pathway was found as primary transformation and eutectic transformation (L → Ni3B and L → Ni/Ni3B); if ΔT p ≥ 175 K ± 10 K (175 °C ± 10 °C), the pathway was found as metastable eutectic transformation, metastable phase decomposition, and residual liquid solidification (L → Ni/Ni23B6, Ni23B6 → Ni/Ni3B, and Lr → Ni/Ni3B). A high-speed video system was adopted to observe the solidification front of each transformation. It showed that for residual liquid solidification, the solidification front velocity is the same magnitude as that for eutectic transformation, but is an order of magnitude larger than for metastable eutectic transformation, which confirms the reaction as Lr → Ni/Ni3B; it also showed that this velocity decreases with increasing ΔT r, which can be explained by reduction of the residual liquid fraction and decrease of Ni23B6 decomposition rate.  相似文献

The stress-strain behaviour of a low-carbon low-alloyed steel after solidification in-situ was studied at four temperatures (1000°C, 1150°C, 1300°C and 1400°C) and at four deformation rates (6 mm s?1, 0,6 mm s?1, 0,06 mm s?1 and 0,006 mm s?1) by tensile tests. The resulting microstructures after solidification and deformation were examined by scanning electron microscope and optical microscope. The results showed that the crystals developed after solidification in the melted part of the tensile specimen are cellular dendritic, similar to the crystallization mode of steel in continuous casting. It was also shown that slip in the dendritic crystals is the main mode of deformation mechanism in the tensile tests within the temperature range mentioned above, but at higher levels within this temperature range (i.e. 1400°C) and at a low deformation rate (i.e. 0,006 mm s?1) grain boundary migration takes part in the deformation process. Continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams for HSLA-80 and HSLA-100 steels pertaining to fusion welding with heat inputs of 10 to 40 kJ/cm, and peak temperatures of 1000 °C to 1400 °C have been developed. The corresponding nonlinear cooling profiles and related γ → α phase transformation start and finish temperatures for various peak temperature conditions have been taken into account. The martensite start (M s ) temperature for each of the grades and ambient temperature microstructures were considered for mapping the CCT diagrams. The austenite condition and cooling rate are found to influence the phase transformation temperatures, transformation kinetics, and morphology of the transformed products. In the fine-grain heat-affected zone (FGHAZ) of HSLA-80 steel, the transformation during cooling begins at temperatures of 550 °C to 560 °C, and in the HSLA-100 steel at 470 °C to 490 °C. In comparison, the transformation temperature is lower by 120 °C and 30 °C in the coarse-grain heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) of HSLA-80 steel and HSLA-100 steel, respectively. At these temperatures, acicular ferrite (AF) and lath martensite (LM) phases are formed. While the FGHAZ contains a greater proportion of acicular ferrite, the CGHAZ has a higher volume fraction of LM. Cooling profiles from the same peak temperature influence the transformation kinetics with slower cooling rates producing a higher volume fraction of acicular ferrite at the expense of LM. The CCT diagrams produced can predict the microstructure of the entire HAZ and have overcome the limitations of the conventional CCT diagrams, primarily with respect to the CGHAZ.  相似文献

Solid-state transformation during heat treatment is of great practical importance because it significantly affects the final structure, properties, and thermal stability of cast components. The present study highlights the issue of structure formation and its effect on the thermal stability of high-quality cast iron, namely, austempered ductile iron (ADI). In this study, experiments were carried out for castings with a 25-mm-walled thickness and under variable heat treatment conditions, i.e., austenitization and austempering within ranges of 850 °C to 925 °C and 250 °C to 380 °C, respectively. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations were carried out within a range of − 260 °C to + 450 °C to study the structure parameters related to the XRD tests, which provided information related to the phase participation, lattice parameters, and stresses in the microstructure as well as with an expansion of the crystal lattice. The results also provide insight into the role of the structure and its homogeneity on the thermal stability of ADI cast iron. The present work also aims to develop strategies to suppress the formation of blocky-shaped austenite in the ADI structure to maintain a homogeneous microstructure and high thermal stability.
