Many environmental problems caused by the large volumes of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), the lack of adequate deposition sites and the shortage of natural resources have led to the use of C&DW as replacement of natural aggregates in the production of new concrete. As in the case of natural aggregates, when recycled aggregates are used to manufacture structural concrete, the assessment of their physical, mechanical and durable characteristics is a key issue. The different physical and mechanical properties of the recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) are evaluated. RCA was obtained by crushing conventional concretes with different strength levels (different w/c ratios) containing four different types of natural coarse aggregates (three crushed stones and a siliceous gravel), which differ in shape, composition and surface texture. There is a significant influence of the natural coarse aggregate (NCA) on the properties of RCA, which in many cases is greater than that of the w/c ratio of the source concrete.

In this research work, High Performance Concrete (HPC) was produced employing 30% of fly ash and 70% of Portland cement as binder materials. Three types of coarse recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) sourced from medium to high strength concretes were employed as 100% replacement of natural aggregates for recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) production. The specimens of four types of concretes (natural aggregate concrete (NAC) and three RACs) were subjected to initial steam curing besides the conventional curing process. The use of high quality RCA (>100 MPa) in HPC produced RAC with similar or improved pore structures, compressive and splitting tensile strengths, and modulus of elasticity to those of NAC. It was determined that the mechanical and physical behaviour of HPC decreased with the reduction of RCA quality. Nonetheless steam-cured RACs had greater reductions of porosity up to 90 days than NAC, which led to lower capillary pore volume.

One of the most promising strategies to manage the large volume of construction and demolition (C&D) waste is recycling and utilizing it for the production of new concrete. However, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) derived from C&D waste possesses relatively higher porosity and water absorption capability, which often limits its wild utilization. In this study, pozzolan slurry (includes silica fume, nano-SiO2, and fly ash slurries) and CO2 treatments as enhancement methods for RCA were investigated. Test results showed that CO2 treatment was more effective in reducing water absorption and enhancing fluidity, whereas pozzolan slurry treatment could decrease fluidity. Mortars prepared with treated RCA exhibited better mechanical strength and higher resistance towards carbonation and chloride-ion diffusion than those with untreated RCA. Both pozzolan slurry and CO2 treatments enhanced not only the properties of RCA, but also the old and new interfacial transition zones (ITZs) as demonstrated in the measured micro-hardness and SEM observation.

Abstract

The main components of building rubble collected from demolished structures are waste concrete, brick and tile. A series of experiments using recycled aggregates of various compositions from building rubble were conducted. The test results show that building rubble can be transformed into useful recycled aggregate through proper processing. When the recycled aggregate was washed, the negative effects on the recycled concrete were greatly reduced. This is especially meaningful for flexural strength. Recycled coarse aggregate is the weakest phase given a low water/cement ratio. This effect will dominate the mechanical properties of recycled concrete. On the contrary, using recycled aggregate in concrete has little effect on its mechanical properties if the water/cement ratio is high. This mechanism does not occur in recycled mortar. The quantity of recycled fine aggregate will govern the mortar strength reduction percentage. Although using brick and tile in concrete will affect its mechanical properties, the effect is limited.

Recycling concrete construction waste is a promising way towards sustainable construction. Coarse recycled concrete aggregates have been widely studied in recent years, however only few data have been reported on the use of fine recycled aggregates. Moreover, a lack of reliable data on long-term properties of recycled aggregate concrete has to be pointed out.In this paper the effects of both fine and coarse recycled concrete aggregates on short and long-term mechanical and physical properties of new structural concrete are investigated. The studied concrete mixes have been designed by adjusting and selecting the content and grain size distribution of concrete waste with the goal to obtain medium–high compressive strength with high content of recycled aggregates (ranging from 27% to 63.5% of total amount of aggregates).Time-dependent properties, such as shrinkage and creep, combined with porosity measurements and mechanical investigations are reported as fundamental features to assess structural concrete behavior.

The main aim of this work was to determine creep and shrinkage variations experienced in recycled concrete, made by replacing the main fraction of the natural aggregate with a recycled aggregate coming from waste concrete and comparing it to a control concrete. It was possible to state that the evolution of deformation by shrinkage and creep was similar to a conventional concrete, although the results after a period of 180 days showed the influence of the substitution percentage in the recycled aggregates present in the mixture. In the case when 100% coarse natural aggregate was replaced by recycled aggregate there was an increase in the deformations by creep of 51% and by shrinkage of 70% as compared to those experienced by the control concrete. The substitution percentages of coarse natural aggregate by coarse recycled aggregate were 20, 50 and 100%. Fine natural aggregate was used in all cases and the amount of cement and water–cement ratio remained constant in the mixture.

Recycled aggregate concrete as structural material
The use of recycled aggregates in concrete opens a whole new range of possibilities in the reuse of materials in the building industry. The utilisation of recycled aggregates is a good solution to the problem of an excess of waste material, provided that the desired final product quality is reached. The studies on the use of recycled aggregates have been going on for 50 years. In fact, none of the results showed that recycled aggregates are unsuitable for structural use. However, some hypothetical problems related to durability aspects resulted in recycled aggregates being employed practically only as base filler for road construction. This paper focuses on the possibility of the use of recycled aggregate concrete as a structural material. For that purpose an experimental study of the shear behaviour and strength of beams made with recycled aggregate concrete was studied. Twelve beam specimens with the same compression strength, four concrete mixtures using different percentages of recycled coarse aggregates (0%, 25%, 50% and 100%) and three different transverse reinforcement arrangements were cast and tested up to failure. Analytical predictions of the experimental results were carried out using a numerical model based on the modified compression field theory and simplified models such as those proposed by Cladera & Mari, the Canadian standard CSA and the Eurocode-2. The results obtained indicate that a substitution of less than 25% of coarse aggregate, scarcely affects the shear capacity of RC beams, provided that all measures related to dosage and durability aspects have been adopted.

The recycling of construction and demolition (C&;D) waste as a source of aggregates for the production of new concrete has attracted increasing interests from the construction industry. While the environmental benefits of using recycled aggregates are well accepted, some unsolved problems prevent this type of material from wide application in structural concrete. One of the major problems with the use of recycled aggregates in structural concrete is their high water absorption capacity which leads to difficulties in controlling the properties of fresh concrete and consequently influences the strength and durability of hardened concrete. This paper presents an experimental study on the properties of fresh concrete prepared with recycled aggregates. Concrete mixes with a target compressive strength of 35 MPa are prepared with the use of recycled aggregates at the levels from 0 to 100% of the total coarse aggregate. The influence of recycled aggregate on the slump and bleeding are investigated. The effect of delaying the starting time of bleeding tests and the effect of using fly ash on the bleeding of concrete are explored.

The following research is focused on establishing the differences in the re-use as aggregate in dry consistency concretes of two types of rubber obtained in the process of Tyre recycling, recycled rubber from tyres (RRT): granulated sizes (4–8 mm) of high quality recycled rubber (HQRR) and the waste of the recycling process: steel and textile fibers with rubber tracks (waste from recycled rubber, WRR). Both types were classified and added as aggregate in substitution of coarse aggregates from 20 to 100 % by volume. The physical and mechanical behavior of WRR in concretes was compared with reference concrete and series with HQRR for a future use in precast concrete pieces. In both samples a reduction of mechanical resistance occurs in proportion with the amounts of rubber of substitution, but less in serials with WRR with a successful combination of steel and textile fiber. WRR shows furthermore a reduction in properties such as workability and density, but also an increment in porosity. These facts facilitate new options for waste from RRT in concretes and therefore lower energy costs, achieving a success rate in the recycling process close to 100 %.

It is considered that using crushed recycled concrete as aggregate for concrete production is a viable alternative to dumping and would help to conserve abiotic resources. This use has fundamentally been based on the coarse fraction because the fine fraction is likely to degrade the performance of the resulting concrete. This paper presents results from a research work undertaken at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal, in which the effects of incorporating two types of superplasticizer on the mechanical performance of concrete containing fine recycled aggregate were evaluated. The purpose was to see if the addition of superplasticizer would offset the detrimental effects associated with the use of fine recycled concrete aggregate. The experimental programme is described and the results of tests for splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance are presented. The relative performance of concrete made with recycled aggregate was found to decrease. However, the same concrete with admixtures in general exhibited a better mechanical performance than the reference mixes without admixtures or with a less active superplasticizer. Therefore, it is argued that the mechanical performance of concrete made with fine recycled concrete aggregates can be as good as that of conventional concrete, if superplasticizers are used to reduce the water–cement ratio of the former concrete.

Recycled concrete is a material with the potential to create a sustainable construction industry. However, recycled concrete presents heterogeneous properties, thereby reducing its applications for some structural purposes and enhancing its application in pavements. This paper provides an insight into a solution in the deformation control for recycled concrete by adding supplementary cementitious materials fly ash and blast furnace slag. Results of this study indicated that the 50% fly ash replacement of Portland cement increased the rupture modulus of the recycled concrete. Conversely, a mixture with over 50% cement replacement by either fly ash or slag or a combination of both exhibited detrimental effect on the compressive strength, rupture modulus, and drying shrinkage. The combined analysis of environmental impacts and mechanical properties of recycled concrete demonstrated the possibility of optimizing the selection of recycled concrete because the best scenario in this study was obtained with the concrete mixture M8 (50% of fly ash+ 100% recycled coarse aggregate).

The effects of the use of Class F fly ash as a cement addition on the hardened properties of recycled aggregate concrete were determined. In this study, four series of concrete mixtures were prepared with water-to-cement (w/c) ratios of 0.55, 0.50, 0.45 and 0.40. The recycled aggregate was used as 0%, 20%, 50% and 100% replacements of coarse natural aggregate. Furthermore, fly ash was employed as 0% and 25% addition of cement. Although the use of recycled aggregate had a negative effect on the mechanical properties of concrete, it was found that the addition of fly ash was able to mitigate this detrimental effect. Also, the addition of fly ash reduced the drying shrinkage and enhanced the resistance to chloride ion penetration of concrete prepared with recycled aggregate. Moreover, it was found that the drying shrinkage and chloride ion penetration decreased as the compressive strength increased. Compared with the results of our previous study, the present study has quantified the advantages of using fly ash as an additional cementitious material in recycled aggregate concrete over the use of fly use as a replacement of cement.

This paper analyzes the influence of the mass sample and the sampling procedure on the composition determination error of recycled aggregates from construction and demolition (C&D) waste, as well as the criterion of classification of mineral materials, establishing new standard recommendations. The precise composition determination depends on the mass sample as stated by the Theory of Sampling. This mass should be higher than that recommended by the EN 932-1, especially for the determination of foreign materials such as gypsum and organic materials. Special sampling procedures should be considered. By the application of the oven-dry density distribution criterion the concrete aggregate studied could fulfill the requirements for concrete use due to a more accurate quantification of particles denser than 2.0 g/cm3 compared to the visual analysis. Thus, the use of such criterion results in a more objective and a better comprehensible classification.

Recycling of waste concrete is one of the sustainable solutions for the growing waste disposal crisis and depletion of natural aggregate sources. As a result, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is produced, and so far it has mostly been used in low-value applications such as for the pavement base. But, from the standpoint of promoting resource and energy savings and environmental preservation, it is essential to study whether a concrete made of recycled aggregates—recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) can be effectively used as a structural material. The experimental research presented in this paper is performed in order to investigate the flexural behavior of RAC beams when compared to the behavior of natural aggregate concrete (NAC) beams under short-term loading and consequently the possibility of using RAC in structural concrete elements. Three different percentages of coarse RCA in total mass of coarse aggregate in concrete mixtures (0 %—NAC, 50 %—RAC50, and 100 %—RAC100), and three different reinforcement ratios (0.28, 1.46, and 2.54 %) were the governing parameters in this investigation. Full-scale tests were performed on nine simply supported beams until the failure load had been reached. Comparison of load-deflection behavior, crack patterns, service deflections, failure modes and ultimate flexural capacity of NAC and RAC beams was made based on our own and other researchers’ test results. The results of conducted analysis showed that the flexural behavior of RAC beams is satisfactory comparing to the behavior of NAC beams, for both the service and ultimate loading. It is concluded that, within the limits of this research, the use of RAC in reinforced concrete beams is technically feasible.

The increasing amount of waste concrete makes desirable collection of high quality of recycled aggregate from waste concrete to be reused for construction. This research used high grade recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) created using pulsed power technology to make concrete specimens. Concrete created from natural aggregate was also prepared to compare the properties of concrete made using pulsed power recycled aggregate. Established acoustic emission (AE) parameter analyses which are AE hit, relationship between RA value and average frequency, and b-value of AE amplitude distribution were applied to analyze the concrete fracture behavior. In addition, AE Weibull analysis was also proposed to evaluate the reliability of the concrete. A set of AE measurement testing was applied to the concrete specimens during compression loading. At the age of 28 days, compressive strength reaches 35.4 MPa and Young’s modulus is 23.6 GPa. The results indicate that the fracture process and reliability of concrete made using pulsed power RCA is similar to that of natural coarse aggregate concrete suggesting that both concrete have equivalent characteristic under compression. Furthermore, the good agreement results shared by AE Weibull analysis with those of other analyses suggesting this method can also be employed as one parameter to determine the condition of concrete.
