Microbial activities can be enhanced by organic rich leachate occurring in solid waste landfills, which possesses the potential to alter the barrier capacity of clay liners. Flexible-wall hydraulic conductivity tests are conducted to investigate the effect of the microbial activities on the hydraulic conductivity of Osaka marine clay used for clay liners of offshore solid waste landfill sites in Japan. Permeants with different redox potentials are employed to investigate the redox effect; and, permeants with high nutrients are used to check the effect of the microbial production in soil specimens. Test results indicate that there are no obvious changes in the free swell index, the liquid limit, or the hydraulic conductivity of the marine clay when a strong reducing agent is used. When nutrients are applied for the growth of microorganisms, however, a decrease in hydraulic conductivity, ranging from greater than two orders of magnitude to less than one order of magnitude, is observed. The formation of biofilm and anaerobic inorganic precipitation on the surface of the soil particles is considered to be responsible for this reduction in hydraulic conductivity. Test results reveal that microbial activities, enhanced by landfill leachate, may not cause an increase in the hydraulic conductivity of natural clay liners of offshore landfill sites.  相似文献

以城市污水厂的污泥复合高岭土用作垃圾填埋场防渗衬层材料,研究了千污泥的掺入量及其颗粒大小、复合土密度、渗滤液性质对污泥复合土渗透性能的影响。结果表明,复合土中污泥的最佳质量分数为40%;提高复合土的干密度可显著降低其渗透系数,当干密度为1.08g/cm^3时复合土的渗透系数达10^-7cm/s数量级,符合垃圾填埋场防渗衬层的要求;渗滤液性质对渗透性能的影响较大,当其电解质浓度较大时复合土的渗透性能随之提高。此外,考察了污泥复合土对重金属的吸附效果,结果表明该复合土可有效吸附垃圾渗滤液中的Cu^2+、Zn^2+等重金属。  相似文献

A one-dimensional model was developed to investigate the transport of organic acids (commonly found in landfill leachate) through a partially saturated composite liner system beneath a landfill. Specific attention was paid to the influence of water content distribution on aqueous-phase diffusion process. Composite liner system was investigated, which was consisted of a geomembrane and a compacted clay liner underlain by three kinds of attenuation layer: sand layer, sandy clay loam layer, and clay layer. Volumetric water content profile in soil layers was obtained by Van Genuchten model, and the Millington and Quirk model was employed to describe the non-linear relationship between volumetric water content and diffusion coefficient. Three cases were analyzed and compared, i.e., totally saturated condition, unsaturated condition without considering unsaturated diffusion model, and unsaturated condition considering unsaturated diffusion model. The numerical results show that the unsaturated sand attenuation layer could serve as excellent diffusion barrier to organic contaminant due to its low water retention capacity. When the dependence of diffusion coefficient on volumetric water content is sufficiently considered, the contaminant flux decreases significantly in all the three kinds of attenuation layer. Unsaturated diffusion model capturing the relationship between water content and diffusion coefficient enables a more reasonable prediction of contaminant transport and distribution in soils.  相似文献

Methane is a potentially inexpensive, widely available electron donor for biological denitrification of wastewater, landfill leachate or drinking water. Although no known methanotroph is able to denitrify, various consortia of microorganisms using methane as the sole carbon source carry out denitrification both aerobically and anaerobically. Aerobic methane-oxidation coupled to denitrification (AME-D) is accomplished by aerobic methanotrophs oxidizing methane and releasing soluble organics that are used by coexisting denitrifiers as electron donors for denitrification. This process has been observed in several laboratory studies. Anaerobic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification (ANME-D) was recently discovered and was found to be mediated by an association of an archaeon and bacteria. Methane oxidizing consortia of microorganisms have also been studied for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) of wastewater. This review focuses on the AME-D process, but also encompasses methane oxidation coupled to SND as well as ANME-D.  相似文献

The characteristics of leachate from landfills vary according to site-specific conditions. Leachates from “old” landfills are often rich in ammonia nitrogen due to the hydrolysis and fermentation of the nitrogenous fractions of biodegradable substrates, with decreases in concentration mainly attributable to leachate washout. At landfills where leachate containment, collection and recirculation is practiced to accelerate decomposition of readily biodegradable organic constituents, leachate ammonia nitrogen concentrations may accumulate to higher levels than during conventional single pass leaching, thereby creating an ultimate leachate discharge challenge. Landfill leachate treatment options include complex and often costly sequences of external physical–chemical and biological processes for removal of high-strength organics and inorganics, including nitrogen. Therefore, this paper focuses on investigations with bioreactor landfill simulations to demonstrate the potential for in situ nitrogen removal in dedicated nitrification/denitrification zones. Using leachate recirculation, associated system modifications provided separate aerobic and anoxic zones for ammonia nitrogen transformations to nitrate and nitrogen gas, respectively. Results from the three simulated optional stages of methanogenesis, nitrification and denitrification indicated that nitrogen conversion and removal was dependent on the operational stage. Both separate and combined reactor operation with internal leachate recycle provided 95% nitrogen conversion. In contrast, combined reactor operation with single pass leaching provided a conversion efficiency per cycle ranging between 30–52% for nitrification and 16–25% for denitrification, thereby indicating the efficacy of using the landfill itself for attenuation of leachate ammonia nitrogen concentrations to levels acceptable for ultimate discharge.  相似文献

The paper discusses the mineralogical and chemical stability of the Oxford Clay as a landfill liner for the containment of domestic waste. The results from a series of batch equilibrium experiments with the mudrock and a synthetic leachate are compared with samples of a liner cored from a 15-year-old site in the Formation. The effects of leachate on the Clay include mineral dissolution, exchange of cations, particle-size reduction and collapse of illite-smectite. In situ mixed-assemblage mineral liners, such as the Oxford Clay, are capable of attenuating leachate components and buffering acid leachates whilst the predominant clay minerals, i.e. illite and kaolinite, remain stable. Alterations to the mineralogy and chemistry of the samples resulting from both short-term and long-term exposure to leachate are discussed with reference to the implications to landfill practice.  相似文献

Four identical pilot-scale landfill reactors with different alternative composite liners were simultaneously operated for a period of about 540 days to investigate and to simulate the migration behaviors of phenolic compounds (phenol, 2-CP, 2-MP, 3-MP, 4-MP, 2-NP, 4-NP, 2,4-DNP, 2,4-DCP, 2,6-DCP, 2,4,5-TCP, 2,4,6-TCP, 2,3,4,6-TeCP, PCP) and heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni) from landfill leachate to the groundwater. Alternative landfill liners of four reactors consist of R1: Compacted clay liner (10 cm + 10 cm, k = 10−8 m/sn), R2: Geomembrane (2 mm HDPE) + compacted clay liner (10 cm + 10 cm, k = 10−8 m/sn), R3: Geomembrane (2 mm HDPE) + compacted clay liner (10 cm, k = 10−8 m/sn) + bentonite liner (2 cm) + compacted clay liner (10 cm, k = 10−8 m/sn), and R4: Geomembrane (2 mm HDPE) + compacted clay liner (10 cm, k = 10−8 m/sn) + zeolite liner (2 cm) + compacted clay liner (10 cm, k = 10−8 m/sn). Wastes representing Istanbul municipal solid wastes were disposed in the reactors. To represent bioreactor landfills, reactors were operated by leachate recirculation. To monitor and control anaerobic degradation in the reactors, variations of conventional parameters (pH, alkalinity, chloride, conductivity, COD, TOC, TKN, ammonia and alcaly metals) were also investigated in landfill leachate samples. The results of this study showed that about 35-50% of migration of organic contaminants (phenolic compounds) and 55-100% of migration of inorganic contaminants (heavy metals) to the model groundwater could be effectively reduced with the use of bentonite and zeolite materials in landfill liner systems. Although leachate contaminants can reach to the groundwater in trace concentrations, findings of this study concluded that the release of these compounds from landfill leachate to the groundwater may potentially be of an important environmental concern based on the experimental findings.  相似文献

Column experiments were set up in order to study the behaviour of heavy metals from landfill leachate in the soil. Special attention was given to the influence of fatty acids in the leachate on the mobility of lead, copper, nickel and zinc. In addition the influence of the kind of soil material was investigated. Of the six columns used in the experiments, three were percolated with synthetic landfill leachate and three with the same leachate without fatty acids. In both cases the three columns contained sand, sand mixed with fine clay particles and sand mixed with large clay aggregates. All experiments were carried out under anaerobic conditions. The soil solution of each column was periodically analysed. At the end of the experiments, after 7 months, the soil was analysed for precipitates and adsorption of metals. In the presence of fatty acids, breakthrough of respectively nickel, zinc and lead took place, whereas copper accumulated in the soil. In the absence of fatty acids precipitation and adsorption of the metals took place.  相似文献

The influence of sediment redox conditions on solubility of selected metals and nutrients in sediment from a coastal Louisiana freshwater lake (Lake Cataouatche) receiving diverted Mississippi River water was quantified. Sediment redox was cycled step wise in 50 mV increments between oxidized (-200 to +500 mV) and reduced (+500 to -200 mV) conditions. Changes in sediment oxidation/reduction status and pH influenced solubility of both metals and nutrients. When redox potential (Eh) was increased from -200 to +500 mV, sediment pH decreased from 7.1 to 5.7. When the sediment Eh decreased from +500 to -200 mV, pH increased from 5.7 to 7.1. The increase in sediment acidity upon oxidation resulted in the release of the Pb, Ca, Mg, Al, and Zn into solution. The purpose of this study was to select alternative landfill sites for Ankara based on the growing trends of Ankara toward the Gölba?? municipality, and to eventually select the best alternative through the use of decision-making tools. Geographic information systems (GIS) and multi-criteria decision analyses were employed to perform landfill site selection. Several criteria, including geology, slope, proximity to roads, availability and proximity of landfill containment material, settlement, suitability for agriculture, vegetation cover, erosion, and lineament system were gathered in a GIS environment. A weight value was assigned to each criterion by applying the pairwise comparison method and the analytical hierarchy method. An ideal point method, namely, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was applied to choose the best alternative landfill site. The geotechnical properties of “Ankara clay”, which shows widespread distribution in Ankara, were reviewed and assessed for the clay's suitability as a single, compacted clay liner and as a component of a geomembrane-compacted clay composite liner for the alternative landfill site selected. The HELP model was employed in order to determine the cumulative, mean leachate head and cumulative, unitized expected leakage rate amounts through the landfill. This paper presents preliminary results of a study of the field performance of composite liners. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the ability of composite liners to contain municipal solid waste (MSW) leachate. The paper presents data for double-lined MSW landfills having composite top liners consisting of a geomembrane (GMB) upper component and a compacted clay liner (CCL) lower component. Data on flow volumes and flow constituents for the leachate collection and removal system (LCRS) and the leakage detection system (LDS) components of the double liner system are analyzed to assess whether leakage has occurred through the composite top liner. Data for nine MSW landfill cells with monitoring periods of up to eight years are presented. Preliminary results indicate that the nine composite liners are performing well and are effective in containing MSW leachate.  相似文献

In this study, As leaching from five arsenic bearing solid residuals (ABSRs) comprised of the iron hydroxide adsorbent Bayoxide E33 used in long-term operations was evaluated in leaching trials using California Waste Extraction Test (CalWET) and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Protocol (TCLP) leachate solutions, a landfill leachate (LL), and synthetic leachate (SL). The initial As loading of the media, which reflects the influence of source water chemistry and varying treatment conditions at the point of removal, strongly influenced the magnitude of As release. The chemical composition of the leachate also influenced As release and demonstrated the relative importance of different release mechanisms, namely media dissolution, pH-dependent sorption/desorption, and ion exchange. The CalWET solution, which partially dissolved the iron-based media, resulted in 100 times more As release than did the TCLP solution, which did not dissolve the media. The LL had a higher pH than the TCLP solution, and even though its organic carbon content was lower it tended to release more As. Tests with the SL were conducted to determine the influence of variations in leachate pH, phosphate, bicarbonate, sulfate, silicate, and natural organic matter (NOM). Release increased at high pH, in the presence of high concentrations of phosphate and bicarbonate, and in the presence of high NOM concentrations. For pH, this reflects the pH-dependence of sorption reactions, whereas for the anions and NOM, direct competition appeared important. Similar to the CalWET solution, excess NOM dissolved portions of the media thereby facilitating As release. In general, our results suggest that estimating As release into landfills will remain a challenge as it depends upon As loading, which reflects site-specific properties, and the composition of the leachate, which varies from landfill to landfill.  相似文献

There is an increasing need for engineered liners to prevent the escape of leachate and to control the migration of landfill gas. This has been influenced by new European and UK legislation and codes of practice.
General principles of site design are explained, followed by a review of the advantages and disadvantages of different liner systems, including mineral liners (natural clay, mudrocks and soil/bentonite admixtures), geomembranes and composite liners.
The need for conservative factors of safety in site design and high standards of quality control, involving full-time supervision and independent certification of the installation works, are considered essential to ensure the effectiveness of the barrier.
There is no one ideal liner material. Composite mineral/geomembrane liners provide the highest degree of security against leakage and, as such, should be considered as 'the norm'rather than for use only in particularly high-risk situations.  相似文献

The development and use of prefabricated bentonite clay liners is a relatively recent development, even for a technology as young as geosynthetics. There are four currently available commercial products, each of which consists of essentially dry bentonite clay agglomerates (with or without a dry, but water soluble, adhesive) placed on a geotextile or geomembrane carrier layer. Often a covering geotextile is used above the clay, and for two of the products, the entire ‘sandwich’ is needled throughout.

For landfill liner systems, the major use of these materials appears to be as the lower component of a composite primary liner. This use is particularly interesting in the light of response action plans (RAPs) which are being required by many regulating agencies. For landfill closure systems, these materials can readily form the lower component of a composite cap system. Of interest here is their possible capacity to follow subsidence of the landfill and their ability to deform in an out-of-plane manner.

With the newness and potential of prefabricated bentonite clay liners, however, comes a number of questions. This paper attempts to present these questions and the currently available answers regarding the various products. In concludes by giving a number of suggestions and cautions for field placement based on the authors' experiences to date.  相似文献

In 2004, Chinese Government prescribed standard municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill bottom liners. However, very limited research has been conducted to evaluate the performance of the standard MSW landfill bottom liners prescribed by the Chinese Government. In this paper, the performance of the two types of Chinese MSW landfill bottom liner systems was evaluated based on: (1) the maximum leachate head; (2) leakage rate; (3) peak concentration of the target contaminant in an aquifer which was underlain the assumed landfill, and (4) total mass per unit area of the target contaminant discharged into the aquifer. The performance of the German standard MSW landfill bottom liner system was evaluated and compared with that of Chinese ones. It is found that the calculated maximum leachate head for the Chinese landfill liner systems was much higher than that for the German one. The calculated leakage rate, peak concentration and the maximum total mass per unit area in the aquifer of the target contaminant show that the performance of the Chinese standard landfill liner Type 2 is practically the same as that of the German standard landfill liner with holed geomembrane wrinkles, while the Chinese standard liner Type 1 is less effective, with regarding the mitigation of the impact of landfills to the groundwater quality. It is concluded that the overall performance of the Chinese standard landfill liner systems is less strict than that of the German standard landfill liner system.  相似文献

某填埋场是国内首批在场底铺设复合衬垫系统的大型卫生填埋场,该场垃圾坝前堆体边坡于2008年6月连续强降雨期间发生失稳事件。介绍该堆体边坡失稳过程的现场监测结果,包括坡面水平位移、深层侧向位移和渗滤液水位。基于监测数据,开展堆体边坡稳定性反分析工作,探讨复合衬垫系统界面抗剪强度取值方法,提出抽排竖井迫降水位、铺膜防渗等应急抢险措施。现场监测和理论分析结果表明:堆体边坡中高渗滤液水位是导致其失稳的关键因素,堆体边坡水平位移速率和渗滤液水位高度呈明显正相关关系;该堆体边坡失稳模式是沿场底复合衬垫系统中软弱界面的深层滑移;斜坡场底上复合衬垫系统在滑移过程中发生位移-软化效应,其界面强度介于峰值强度和残余强度之间;抽排竖井迫降水位是最直接、有效的应急抢险措施。  相似文献

The displacement of sorbed metals during the treatment of soils and groundwater with modified Fenton's reagent was investigated using five common metal contaminants (cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc) and kaolinite as a model sorbent. Modified Fenton's conditions included three H(2)O(2) concentrations (0.9, 1.8, 2.7 M) and two catalysts: soluble iron (III) at pH 3 and iron (III)-NTA chelate at pH 6. Iron (III)-catalyzed Fenton's reactions released significant amounts of zinc, cadmium, and copper. Modified Fenton's reactions catalyzed by iron (III)-NTA released zinc, cadmium, copper, and lead, and resulted in greater amounts of metals release than the iron (III)-catalyzed reactions. Metals release may have been mediated by transient oxygen species, such as superoxide, generated by propagation reactions, which become dominant at the relatively high hydrogen peroxide concentrations used. Metals release from kaolinite was undetectable when sufficiently low hydrogen peroxide concentrations were maintained to minimize propagation reactions. These results indicate that using dilute concentrations of hydrogen peroxide for Fenton's ISCO may minimize potential metals mobility when treating contaminated soils and groundwater containing a mixture of organic and metal contaminants.  相似文献

采用溶质运移的一维迁移模型,研究了粘土环境岩土工程特性对填埋场衬垫防渗标准的影响,对目前采用的填埋场粘土类衬垫防渗设计标准及其有效性进行了多参数组合的计算分析;此外,还比较了粘土衬垫与复合衬垫对污染物离子的防渗阻隔性能,对土工膜在衬垫中的作用进行分析;研究表明,应针对不同地区的情况(干旱少雨或多雨等)考虑衬垫的形式。与其他因素相比,粘土的渗透系数对衬垫层渗漏影响最大,以水力渗透系数作为填埋场粘土衬垫的设计标准是可行的,但离子扩散系数的影响也不可忽略;而增强粘土的活性,提高粘土吸附离子的性能,则可延长离子通过衬垫的击穿时间;与单纯的粘土衬垫相比,复合衬垫对离子具有更好的阻隔性能,故在南方多雨地区宜采用复合衬垫;而用污染物的渗漏总量作为填埋场衬垫的设计标准比击穿时间更合理。  相似文献

The slow leaching of nitrogen from solid waste in landfills, resulting in high concentrations of ammonia in the landfill leachate, may last for several decades. The removal of nitrogen from leachate is desirable as nitrogen can trigger eutrophication in lakes and rivers. In the present study, a low-cost nitrification-denitrification process was developed to reduce nitrogen load especially in leachates from small landfills. Nitrification was studied in laboratory and on-site pilot aerobic biofilters with waste materials as filter media (crushed brick in upflow filters and bulking agent of compost in a downflow filter) while denitrification was studied in a laboratory anoxic/anaerobic column filled with landfill waste. In the laboratory nitrification filters, start-up of nitrification took less than 3 weeks and over 90% nitrification of leachate (NH4-N between 60 and 170mg N l(-1), COD between 230 and 1,300 mg l(-1)) was obtained with loading rates between 100 and 130 mgNH4-N l(-1) d at 25 degrees C. In an on-site pilot study a level of nitrification of leachate (NH4-N between 160 and 270 mg N l(-1), COD between 1,300 and 1,600 mg l(-1)) above 90% was achieved in a crushed brick biofilter with a loading rate of 50mg NH4-N l(-1) d even at temperatures as low as 5-10 degrees C. Ammonium concentrations in all biofilter effluents were usually below the detection limit. In the denitrification column. denitrification started within 2 weeks and total oxidised nitrogen in nitrified leachate (TON between 50 and 150mg N l(-1)) usually declined below the detection limit at 25 degrees C, whereas some ammonium, probably originating from the landfill waste used in the column, was detected in the effluent. No adverse effect was observed on the methanation of waste in the denitrification column with a loading rate of 3.8 g TON-N/t-TS(waste) d. In conclusion, nitrification in a low-cost biofilter followed by denitrification in a landfill body appears applicable for the removal of nitrogen in landfill leachate in colder climates.  相似文献
