In rivers, sediments are frequently accumulating persistent chemicals, especially for those that are more contaminated as a consequence of pressure related to environmental pollution and human activity. The Seine river basin (France) is heavily polluted from nearby industrial activities, and the urban expansion of Paris and its suburbs within the Ile de France region and the sediments present in the Seine river basin are contaminated. To ensure safe, navigable waters, rivers and waterways must be dredged. In this paper, the quality of the sediment dredged in 1996, 1999 and 2000 is discussed. Physico-chemical characteristics of the sediment itself and of the pore-water are presented. Seine basin sediments show very diverse compositions depending on the sampling site. Nevertheless, a geographic distribution study illustrated that the Paris impact is far from being the only explanation to this diversity, the quality of this sediment is also of great concern. The sediment once dredged is transported via barges to a wet disposal site, where the dredged material is mixed with Seine water in order to be pumped into the receiving site. This sort of dumping might be responsible for the potential release of contaminants to the overlying water from the significantly contaminated sediments.  相似文献

The Seine river watershed (France) is a deeply anthropogenically impacted area, due to the high population density, intense industrial activities and intensive agriculture. The water quality and ecological functioning of the different rivers of the Seine drainage network have been extensively studied during the last fifteen years within the framework of a large French multidisciplinary scientific program (PIREN Seine program). This paper presents a synthesis of the main data gained in the scope of this program concerning the microbiological water contamination of the rivers of the Seine drainage network. The more common indicator of fecal contamination (fecal coliforms) was mainly used; some complementary works used E. coli and intestinal enterococci as alternative fecal indicators. Point sources (outfall of wastewater treatment plants) and non point sources (surface runoff and soil leaching) of fecal pollution to the rivers of the watershed were quantified. Results showed that, at the scale of a large urbanised watershed as the Seine basin, the input of fecal micro-organisms by non-point sources is much lower than the inputs by point sources. However, the local impact of diffuse non-human sources (especially surface runoff of pastured fields) can be of major importance on the microbiological quality of small headwater rivers. Fecal contamination of the main rivers of the Seine watershed (Seine, Marne, Oise rivers) was studied showing high level of microbiological pollution when compared to European guidelines for bathing waters. The strong negative impact of treated wastewater effluents outfall on the microbiological quality of receiving rivers was observed in different areas of the watershed. Once released in rivers, culturable fecal bacteria disappeared relatively rapidly due to mortality (protozoan grazing, lysis) or loss of culturability induced by stress conditions (sunlight effect, nutrient concentration, temperature). Mortality rates of E. coli were studied in different types of rivers within the watershed showing, in summer conditions, no major difference in the mortality rates in small and large rivers. As a result of these studies, a module describing the dynamics of fecal bacteria has been developed and embedded within a hydro-ecological model describing the functioning of the rivers of the whole watershed (the SENEQUE model). Once validated, such a model can be used for testing predictive scenarios and thus can be a very useful tool for the management of microbiological water quality at the scale of the whole basin.  相似文献

River basin metal pollution originates from heavy industries (plating, automobile) and from urban sources (Paris conurbation: 2740 km(2), 9.47 million inhabitants). The natural sources of metal have been found to be limited due to sedimentary nature of this catchment and to the very low river sediment transport (10 t km(-2) y(-1)). Several types of data have been collected to build the metal budget within the whole Seine River basin: field surveys, economical statistics and environmental models. Environmental contamination and related fluxes have been measured on atmospheric fallout, rural streams particles, and Seine River particles upstream and downstream of Paris and at river mouth. Metal pathways and budgets have been set up for (i) a typical cultivated area, (ii) a Paris combined sewer system, (iii) Paris conurbation and (iv) the whole catchment metal retention effect in floodplain and dredged material. Metal fluxes to the estuary have been decomposed into natural, urban domestic and other sources. The latter are within 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than waste water fluxes directly released into rivers according to an industrial census. These fluxes have been further compared to the annual use (1994-2003) of these metals. Metal excess fluxes exported by the river are now a marginal leak of metal inputs to the catchment (i.e. "raw" metals, metals in goods, atmospheric fallout), generally from 0.2 to 5 per thousand. However, due to the very limited dilution power in this basin, the contamination of particles is still relatively high. The Seine River basin is gradually storing metals, mostly in manufactured products used in construction, but also in various waste dumps, industrial soils, agricultural and flood plain soils.  相似文献

Aquatic macrophytes play an important role in the nutrient dynamics of streams. As a result, there is much interest in their use as trophic indicators. However, the relationship between aquatic macrophytes and the trophic status of rivers is a complex one, partly because of the effects of a wide range of environmental variables and partly because submerged, rooted macrophytes can absorb nutrients from the river sediments and/or the water column. Experiments which have tried to establish the relative importance of sediments or water as sources of nutrients are inconclusive and further work is needed to establish how sediment nutrient characteristics vary within and among rivers (spatially and temporally) and the inter-relationships between sediment nutrients, water column chemistry and macrophytes. This paper presents the initial findings from a study of 17 lowland rivers in southern England which is exploring the spatial variability of sediment characteristics (total and inorganic phosphorus, total nitrogen, organic carbon, silt-clay fraction and organic matter content) and the relationship with aquatic macrophytes. The preliminary analysis indicates that although sediment characteristics are highly variable within 100-m river reaches, the variability across the 17 rivers is even greater; this is despite the limited geographic and trophic range of the study sites. The results presented in this paper also give some indication of the sediment characteristics associated with five macrophyte species but it is too early to ascribe sediment preferences for particular species.  相似文献

Grain-size distribution, major elements, nutrients and trace metals were determined in bed sediments and suspension collected at 10 representative sites along the river Po under normal and high flow conditions. Grain-size distribution and major element composition of suspension highlighted the presence of two distinct particle populations in the upper-middle Po (coarser particles, lower carbonate content) and in the lower Po (finer particles, higher carbonate content). This change partly reflects the geological differences between the two parts of the basin, and also the presence of a hydroelectric power plant at Isola Serafini (Piacenza). With respect to environmental quality issues, bed sediments and suspension provide similar results. A moderate nutrient pollution is found in all but the uppermost parts of the river basin, while the most significant inputs of trace metals appear to originate from the urban areas of Turin and Milan. Calculation of sediment enrichment factors identifies Cd, Cu, Hg and Zn as the most impacted elements by human activities. On the other hand, the high levels of Ni and Cr throughout the river seem to derive mainly from the presence of basic rocks in the upper and middle parts of the basin. Both nutrient and trace metal particulate concentrations substantially decrease under high flow conditions possibly due to "flushing" of contaminated bed sediments and resuspension of coarser material. Under normal flow conditions, water hydrochemistry and concentrations of some elements (As, Ca, Cr, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, and Pb) in the dissolved phase (<0.45 microm) were also determined. Calculation of trace metals partition coefficients shows that the relative importance of the particulate and water phases varies in response to water hydrochemistry and suspended solid content, but that most elements achieve a conditional equilibrium in the lower stretches of the river Po. These results are the first of this kind reported for the whole river course and highlight the factors and mechanisms controlling the origin, mobility and fate of nutrients and trace metals in the river Po.

Fresh floodplain deposits (FD), from 11 key stations, covering the Seine mainstem and its major tributaries (Yonne, Marne and Oise Rivers), were sampled from 1994 to 2000. Background levels for Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn were established using prehistoric FD and actual bed sediments collected in small forested sub-basins in the most upstream part of the basin. Throughout the Seine River Basin, FD contain elevated concentrations of Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn compared to local background values (by factors>twofold). In the Seine River Basin, trace element concentrations display substantial downstream increases as a result of increasing population densities, particularly from Greater Paris (10 million inhabitants), and reach their maxima at the river mouth (Poses). These elevated levels make the Seine one of the most heavily impacted rivers in the world. On the other hand, floodplain-associated trace element levels have declined over the past 7 years. This mirrors results from contemporaneous suspended sediment surveys at the river mouth for the 1984-1999 period. Most of these temporal declines appear to reflect reductions in industrial and domestic solid wastes discharged from the main Parisian sewage plant (Seine Aval).  相似文献

Denitrification rates in relation to stream sediment characteristics   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Potential rates of nitrate removal were studied in sediments from three Ontario rivers that differed in texture, organic carbon contents and other characteristics. Intact 0–5 cm depth sediment cores from 22 sites on each river were overlain with aerated 5 mg 1−1 NO3-N solution and incubated in the laboratory at 21°C for 48 h. Rates of nitrate-N loss from the overlying solutions varied from 37 to 412 mg m−2 day−1 for a 24 h incubation period. The acetylene blockage technique was used with nitrate amended sediments to evaluate the relative importance of denitrification and nitrate reduction to ammonium. Denitrification accounted for 80–100% of the nitrate loss in the majority of sediment samples tested. Rates of nitrate loss for the 24 h period exhibited a highly significant positive correlation (r = 0.82–0.89) with the water-soluble carbon content of the sediments in each river. Significant relationships were also observed between nitrate loss and organic carbon, total nitrogen and sediment ammonium. A decline in nitrate loss via denitrification and increased nitrate reduction to ammonium was correlated with the organic carbon and water-soluble carbon content of the stream sediments.  相似文献

Sediments from nine floodplain lakes in Pantanal were analyzed for a large-scale (300 km) survey of mercury (Hg) load in sediments and soils of the Alto Pantanal and to study the relationship between Hg and reactive aluminum, iron, and manganese oxy-hydroxides. The results were compared with the Hg content in river and stream sediments from the Poconé gold mining area, where Hg has been extensively used and still is in use. The results indicate that the Hg concentrations were elevated in river sediment close to the mining area in Bento Gomes river basin (average in the < 74-microm fraction 88.9 ng Hg g(-1) dry wt.; interquartile range 50.3-119.5), but there was no clear indication that the local Hg emissions have contaminated the remote floodplain lakes, where concentrations were surprisingly low (average in the < 74-microm fraction 33.2 ng Hg g(-1) dry wt. sediment; interquartile range 18.4-46.8), in particular when considering geochemical characteristics of the sediment. The sediment from the floodplain lakes contained less Hg-tot and more reactive iron oxy-hydroxides than soils from the Tapajós area in the Amazon basin. This resulted in a mass ratio between Hg and amorphous oxy-hydroxides of only 5 x 10(-6) for Hg-tot/Fe-oxa (interquartile range 3-7 x 10(-6).

The contamination of the River Seine (France) and its main tributaries (Yonne, Marne, Oise) have been studied, under different hydrological conditions, at the end of spring before the low watermark and at the beginning of autumn after the first swelling of flow. The sector under study consists of the Seine basin, centered on the Paris area; the variability of PCB concentration in water, apart from flow dependence, shows that important lateral discharges are involved. The pollution level is particularly noticeable at Paris and downstream from Paris and the median concentration in sediments reaches 3800 ng l−1 (ppb). Data on particulate organic carbon and various grain size fractions show the PCB to be preferentially adsorbed on organic-rich sedimentary particles.Partition coefficients between particulate matter and liquid phase have been computed and show that the liquid phase has the main role in micropollutant transport.  相似文献

In order to assess the fecal contamination of rivers in the Seine watershed through soil leaching, 78 small streams located in rural areas were sampled upstream from any wastewater outfall. Culturable fecal coliforms (FC) and beta-D-glucuronidase activity (specific of Escherichia coli) were measured in the samples. Data showed a significant correlation between both estimates of fecal contamination. In the two different areas of the Seine river watershed investigated, most of the small streams were significantly contaminated by fecal bacteria. In general, the streams flowing through areas partly or fully covered with pastures were more contaminated than those flowing through forest and cultivated areas. Rainfall increased the suspended solid content of small streams as well as their fecal contamination, as an important fraction of FC was adsorbed on particles. Calculations showed that, at a large watershed scale, the input of FC in rivers through soil leaching was very low when compared to the input through the discharge of treated domestic wastewater but this could not be true at local scale.  相似文献

This article presents the amounts of heavy metals bound to the sediment matrices (carbonates, Fe-oxides, Mn-oxides, and organic matter), the correlations between any two heavy-metal binding fractions, and the correlations between sediment matrices and their heavy-metal binding fractions. Data consisted of 313 sets obtained from five main rivers (located in southern Taiwan) were analyzed by statistical methods. Among six heavy metals analyzed (Zn, Cu. Pb, Ni, Cr, and Co), the statistical results show that Zn is primarily bound to organic matter, and Cr is primarily bound to Fe-oxides. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis (CA) result in significant correlations between carbonates bound Ni and carbonates bound Cr, Fe-oxides bound Ni and Fe-oxides bound Cr, and Mn-oxides bound Cu and Mn-oxides bound Cr. From linear regression results, the levels of the six heavy metals bound to either organic matter or Fe-oxides is moderately dependent on the contents of organic matter or Fe-oxides, especially true for Cr and Pb. According to slope values of linear regression, Cu and Cr have the highest specific binding amounts (SBA) to organic matter and Fe-oxides, respectively. A significant correlation between organic matter and organically bound heavy metals implied that organic matter contained in the sediments of the Potzu river and the Yenshui river can be adequately used as a normalizing agent. However, the six heavy metals bound to either carbonates or Mn-oxides do not correlate with carbonates or Mn-oxides. The obtained results also imply that competitions of various sediment phases in association with heavy metals occur, and organic matter and Fe-oxides are more accessible to heavy metals than other sediment phases.  相似文献

Dissolved and bioavailable contaminants in the Seine river basin   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Diffusive Gradient in Thin Films (DGT) and Semi-Permeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) were deployed in the Seine river basin in order to assess labile metals and truly dissolved Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons. We show that the tools are reliable in aquatic environments to assess the speciation of dissolved contaminants and hence provide a good insight into the potential bioavailability of contaminants. The deployment of the DGT and SPMDs in contrasting environments in the Seine river basin allowed distinction to be made of availability of contaminants between headwater streams and much more impacted river reaches and an assessment of bioavailability. At the stations under urban influence, the impact of dissolved organic matter on both copper and PAHs bioavailability is less pronounced than at upstream stations, where humic substances dominate.  相似文献

To achieve water quality goals in a river basin, a water quality management model (WQMM) has been developed through the geographic information system (GIS) approach and a mathematical water quality model. The developed model has been applied to the Karun and Dez Rivers, where water quality has decreased due to heavy pollutant loads from Khuzestan province cities and surrounding areas. Pollution sources, land use, geographic features and measured water quality data of the river basin were incorporated into the Arc‐View GIS database. With the database, the management model calculated management type and management cost for each management project in the river basin. Until now, river management policy for polluted rivers in Iran first penalizes pollution sources and then constructs treatment plants for the pollution sources whose wastewater is released untreated and for which the wastewater quality goal of the Iranian Department of Environment is not met. Different management projects with a time programme were proposed and they were compared with the results of the river quality without any management approach. It became clear that the results based on the management approach were much better than those for the unmanaged condition from the viewpoint of the achievement of water quality goals and cost optimization.  相似文献

Lead isotopes ratios have been determined in suspended matter and water samples collected from major rivers and estuaries in France to assess their present level of Pb pollution. Most of the anthropogenic Pb found in the environment comes from Pb alkyls added to petrol. In France most petrol Pb comes from imported Pb ores which mainly have very characteristic Pb isotopes ratios (for example, a low 206Pb/207Pb ratio). Indeed, the 206Pb/207Pb ratio of aerosols sampled in France near a highway and a carpark was found to be very low (1.09-1.11). Despite not being so important with respect to atmospheric and water pollution, anthropogenic Pb produced by the iron, steel and copper production industries has also been considered and a slightly higher 206Pb/207Pb ratio (1.141) has been found from measurements made in the north of France near industrial plants.Conversely, higher 206Pb/207Pb ratios (1.197-1.206) were found in the pre-industrial sediments discharged by the rivers studied. These ratios are considered to be representative of local natural Pb during pre-industrial times. The measured Pb isotopes ratios in the suspended particulate matter compared with the two end-members show that the most polluted river is the Seine, followed by the Rhône and then the Garonne and the Loire. It is shown that anthropogenic Pb pollution is more easily detected when the solid discharge is low, such as in the Seine river. Conversely, a high particulate load can dilute the level of pollution by anthropogenic Pb and in this case Pb isotopes ratios are very similar to the natural level. As far as estuaries are concerned (the Seine estuary was not studied), variations of Pb isotopes ratios are generally observed and are attributed either to natural geochemical processes (Gironde estuary) or to man's influence (Loire and Rhône estuaries).  相似文献

The acid-volatile sulfide (AVS), simultaneously extracted metals (SEM), total metals, and pore-water metal concentrations were studied in Vojvodina (Serbia) sediments. In Serbia, there are no regulations concerning sediment quality standards and sediment management. Harmonization of legislation in the domain of environmental protection with EU requirements will increase the significance of the sediment issue. Sediment quality was assessed according to Dutch standards, but the results were also compared with Canadian and USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) guidelines for sediment quality. A comparison of the results based on different criteria for sediment quality assessment shows that they are sometimes contradictory. Therefore, a single approach to quality assessment may be insufficient. The Sigma[SEM]/[AVS] ratio was found to be greater than one at several locations that were already recognized as places of high risk based on Dutch standards. Some other samples had Sigma[SEM]/[AVS]<1, despite of the high risk classification based on the Dutch evaluation. However, not all sediments with Sigma[SEM]/[AVS]>1 can cause increased toxicity because there are many other metal-binding phases in sediments. Metals that are associated with AVS may be released within sediments through storms, dredging activities, oxidation, etc., and may have adverse environmental impacts. This has to be taken into account during dredging, which is for some sediments necessary because the sediment is of class 4 (Dutch evaluation), because the dredging process will certainly increase the concentration of bioavailable heavy metals and disturb the sedimentation dynamics. The obtained results will be invaluable for future activities regarding dredging and sediment management in the country.  相似文献

The total concentrations and chemical partitioning of heavy metals in streambed sediments, collected around the Jaintia Hills coal deposit of northeast India, were studied using pollution indices and multivariate techniques to evaluate the risk and contamination levels from heavy metals and their possible origins. Results show that sediments close to mining sites have low pH (<4), high organic carbon, and contain significant amounts of Fe-oxyhydroxide phases (mainly, goethite and schwertmannite), which implies direct impact of coal mine drainage. The average concentrations of Fe, Cu, Co, Cd, Cr, and Zn exceeded the World average, and in some cases, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Cr concentrations exceeded the threshold effects level, which suggests they will be toxic to aquatic biota. Contamination factors (CF) show that the sediments are low to highly contaminated with Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Fe, and Zn and low to moderately contaminated with Co, Cr and Ni. The pollution load index (PLI), degree of contamination index (C deg) and Nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI) show that the sediments are moderately to highly contaminated, with the extent of pollution greatest nearest to the collieries. The potential ecological risk index (RI) shows low to considerable ecological risk from heavy metals in the sediments, with Cd having the high potential of risk, which also agrees with the risk assessment code (RAC). Multivariate statistical analysis suggests that the concentrations of the heavy metals in stream sediments are strongly influenced by Fe-oxyhydroxide phases and organic carbon derived from anthropogenic sources, mainly coal mining activities. Although a significant proportion of the Cd, Mn, and Ni in the sediments are partitioned into exchangeable and organic fractions, a sizable amount of metals are also found in the Fe–Mn fraction, suggesting that Fe-oxyhydroxides play a dominant role in controlling metal mobility in these stream sediments.  相似文献
