This paper discusses the complexity of packingk-chains (simple paths of lengthk) into an undirected graph; the chains packed must be either vertex-disjoint or edge-disjoint. Linear-time algorithms are given for both problems when the graph is a tree, and for the edge-disjoint packing problem when the graph is general andk = 2. The vertex-disjoint packing problem for general graphs is shown to be NP-complete even when the graph has maximum degree three andk = 2. Similarly the edge-disjoint packing problem is NP-complete even when the graph has maximum degree four andk = 3.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the k-path cover problem for graphs, which is to find the minimum number of vertex disjoint k-paths that cover all the vertices of a graph. The k-path cover problem for general graphs is NP-complete. Though notable applications of this problem to database design, network, VLSI design, ring protocols, and code optimization, efficient algorithms are known for only few special classes of graphs. In order to solve this problem for cacti, i.e., graphs where no edge lies on more than one cycle, we introduce the so-called Steiner version of the k-path cover problem, and develop an efficient algorithm for the Steiner k-path cover problem for cacti, which finds an optimal k-path cover for a given cactus in polynomial time.  相似文献

We study the problem of determining the spanning tree congestion of a?graph. We present some sharp contrasts in the parameterized complexity of this problem. First, we show that on apex-minor-free graphs, a general class of graphs containing planar graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth, and graphs of bounded genus, the problem to determine whether a given graph has spanning tree congestion at most k can be solved in linear time for every fixed k. We also show that for every fixed k and d the problem is solvable in linear time for graphs of degree at most d. In contrast, if we allow only one vertex of unbounded degree, the problem immediately becomes NP-complete for any fixed k??8. Moreover, the hardness result holds for graphs excluding the complete graph on 6 vertices as a minor. We also observe that for k??3 the problem becomes polynomially time solvable.  相似文献

We establish a refined search tree technique for the parameterized DOMINATING SET problem on planar graphs. Here, we are given an undirected graph and we ask for a set of at most k vertices such that every other vertex has at least one neighbor in this set. We describe algorithms with running times O(8kn) and O(8kk+n3), where n is the number of vertices in the graph, based on bounded search trees. We describe a set of polynomial time data-reduction rules for a more general “annotated” problem on black/white graphs that asks for a set of k vertices (black or white) that dominate all the black vertices. An intricate argument based on the Euler formula then establishes an efficient branching strategy for reduced inputs to this problem. In addition, we give a family examples showing that the bound of the branching theorem is optimal with respect to our reduction rules. Our final search tree algorithm is easy to implement; its analysis, however, is involved.  相似文献

We further develop the study of testing graph properties as initiated by Goldreich, Goldwasser and Ron. Loosely speaking, given an oracle access to a graph, we wish to distinguish the case when the graph has a pre-determined property from the case when it is ``far'' from having this property. Whereas they view graphs as represented by their adjacency matrix and measure the distance between graphs as a fraction of all possible vertex pairs, we view graphs as represented by bounded-length incidence lists and measure the distance between graphs as a fraction of the maximum possible number of edges. Thus, while the previous model is most appropriate for the study of dense graphs, our model is most appropriate for the study of bounded-degree graphs. In particular, we present randomized algorithms for testing whether an unknown bounded-degree graph is connected, k -connected (for k>1 ), cycle-free and Eulerian. Our algorithms work in time polynomial in 1/? , always accept the graph when it has the tested property, and reject with high probability if the graph is ? -far from having the property. For example, the 2-connectivity algorithm rejects (with high probability) any N -vertex d -degree graph for which more than ? dN edges need to be added in order to make the graph 2-edge-connected. In addition we prove lower bounds of Ω(\sqrt N ) on the query complexity of testing algorithms for the bipartite and expander properties.  相似文献

In a graph G, a vertex is said to dominate itself and all of its neighbors. For a fixed positive integer k, the k-tuple domination problem is to find a minimum sized vertex subset in a graph such that every vertex in the graph is dominated by at least k vertices in this set. The current paper studies k-tuple domination in graphs from an algorithmic point of view. In particular, we give a linear-time algorithm for the k-tuple domination problem in strongly chordal graphs, which is a subclass of chordal graphs and includes trees, block graphs, interval graphs and directed path graphs. We also prove that the k-tuple domination problem is NP-complete for split graphs (a subclass of chordal graphs) and for bipartite graphs.  相似文献

We study the classical Bandwidth problem from the viewpoint of parametrised algorithms. Given a graph G=(V,E) and a positive integer k, the Bandwidth problem asks whether there exists a bijective function β:{1,…,∣V∣}→V such that for every edge uvE, ∣β−1(u)−β−1(v)∣≤k. It is known that under standard complexity assumptions, no algorithm for Bandwidth with running time of the form f(k)nO(1) exists, even when the input is restricted to trees. We initiate the search for classes of graphs where such algorithms do exist. We present an algorithm with running time n⋅2O(klogk) for Bandwidth on AT-free graphs, a well-studied graph class that contains interval, permutation, and cocomparability graphs. Our result is the first non-trivial algorithm that shows fixed-parameter tractability of Bandwidth on a graph class on which the problem remains NP-complete.  相似文献

The disk dimension of a planar graph G is the least number k for which G embeds in the plane minus k open disks, with every vertex on the boundary of some disk. Useful properties of graphs with a given disk dimension are derived, leading to an algorithm to obtain an outerplanar subgraph of a graph with disk dimension k by removing at most 2k−2 vertices. This reduction is used to obtain linear-time exact and approximation algorithms on graphs with fixed disk dimension. In particular, a linear-time approximation algorithm is presented for the pathwidth problem.  相似文献

The compaction problem is to partition the vertices of an input graph G onto the vertices of a fixed target graph H, such that adjacent vertices of G remain adjacent in H, and every vertex and non-loop edge of H is covered by some vertex and edge of G respectively, i.e., the partition is a homomorphism of G onto H (except the loop edges). Various computational complexity results, including both NP-completeness and polynomial time solvability, have been presented earlier for this problem for various classes of target graphs H. In this paper, we pay attention to the input graphs G, and present polynomial time algorithms for the problem for some class of input graphs, keeping the target graph H general as any reflexive or irreflexive graph. Our algorithms also give insight as for which instances of the input graphs, the problem could possibly be NP-complete for certain target graphs. With the help of our results, we are able to further refine the structure of the input graph that would be necessary for the problem to be possibly NP-complete, when the target graph is a cycle. Thus, when the target graph is a cycle, we enhance the class of input graphs for which the problem is polynomial time solvable. We also present analogous results for a variation of the compaction problem, which we call the vertex-compaction problem. Using our results, we also provide important relationships between compaction, retraction, and vertex-compaction to cycles.  相似文献

For a family F of graphs, a graph U is said to be F-induced-universal if every graph of F is an induced subgraph of U. We give a construction for an induced-universal graph for the family of graphs on n vertices with degree at most k. For k even, our induced-universal graph has O(nk/2) vertices and for k odd it has O(nk/2⌉−1/klog2+2/kn) vertices. This construction improves a result of Butler by a multiplicative constant factor for the even case and by almost a multiplicative n1/k factor for the odd case. We also construct induced-universal graphs for the class of oriented graphs with bounded incoming and outgoing degree, slightly improving another result of Butler.  相似文献

Maximal clique enumeration is a fundamental problem in graph theory and has been extensively studied. However, maximal clique enumeration is time-consuming in large graphs and always returns enormous cliques with large overlaps. Motivated by this, in this paper, we study the diversified top-k clique search problem which is to find top-k cliques that can cover most number of nodes in the graph. Diversified top-k clique search can be widely used in a lot of applications including community search, motif discovery, and anomaly detection in large graphs. A naive solution for diversified top-k clique search is to keep all maximal cliques in memory and then find k of them that cover most nodes in the graph by using the approximate greedy max k-cover algorithm. However, such a solution is impractical when the graph is large. In this paper, instead of keeping all maximal cliques in memory, we devise an algorithm to maintain k candidates in the process of maximal clique enumeration. Our algorithm has limited memory footprint and can achieve a guaranteed approximation ratio. We also introduce a novel light-weight \(\mathsf {PNP}\)-\(\mathsf {Index}\), based on which we design an optimal maximal clique maintenance algorithm. We further explore three optimization strategies to avoid enumerating all maximal cliques and thus largely reduce the computational cost. Besides, for the massive input graph, we develop an I/O efficient algorithm to tackle the problem when the input graph cannot fit in main memory. We conduct extensive performance studies on real graphs and synthetic graphs. One of the real graphs contains 1.02 billion edges. The results demonstrate the high efficiency and effectiveness of our approach.  相似文献

The k-in-a-Path problem is to test whether a graph contains an induced path spanning k given vertices. This problem is NP-complete in general graphs, already when k=3. We show how to solve it in polynomial time on claw-free graphs, when k is an arbitrary fixed integer not part of the input. As a consequence, also the k-Induced Disjoint Paths and the k-in-a-Cycle problem are solvable in polynomial time on claw-free graphs for any fixed k. The first problem has as input a graph G and k pairs of specified vertices (s i ,t i ) for i=1,…,k and is to test whether G contain k mutually induced paths P i such that P i connects s i and t i for i=1,…,k. The second problem is to test whether a graph contains an induced cycle spanning k given vertices. When k is part of the input, we show that all three problems are NP-complete, even for the class of line graphs, which form a subclass of the class of claw-free graphs.  相似文献

In the exact matching problem we are given a graph G, some of whose edges are colored red, and a positive integer k. The goal is to determine if G has a perfect matching, exactly k edges of which are red. More generally if the matching number of G is m=m(G), the goal is to find a matching with m edges, exactly k edges of which are red, or determine that no such matching exists. This problem is one of the few remaining problems that have efficient randomized algorithms (in fact, this problem is in RNC), but for which no polynomial time deterministic algorithm is known. Our first result shows that, in a sense, this problem is as close to being in P as one can get. We give a polynomial time deterministic algorithm that either correctly decides that no maximum matching has exactly k red edges, or exhibits a matching with m(G)?1 edges having exactly k red edges. Hence, the additive error is one. We also present an efficient algorithm for the exact matching problem in families of graphs for which this problem is known to be tractable. We show how to count the number of exact perfect matchings in K 3,3-minor free graphs (these include all planar graphs as well as many others) in O(n 3.19) worst case time. Our algorithm can also count the number of perfect matchings in K 3,3-minor free graphs in O(n 2.19) time.  相似文献

A family of subsets of a set is Helly when every subfamily of it, which is formed by pairwise intersecting subsets contains a common element. A graph G is clique-Helly when the family of its (maximal) cliques is Helly, while G is hereditary clique-Helly when every induced subgraph of it is clique-Helly. The best algorithms currently known to recognize clique-Helly and hereditary clique-Helly graphs have complexities O(nm2) and O(n2m), respectively, for a graph with n vertices and m edges. In this Note, we describe algorithms which recognize both classes in O(m2) time. These algorithms also reduce the complexity of recognizing some other classes, as disk-Helly graphs.  相似文献

The densest k-subgraph (DkS) problem asks for a k-vertex subgraph of a given graph with the maximum number of edges. The DkS problem is NP-hard even for special graph classes including bipartite, planar, comparability and chordal graphs, while no constant approximation algorithm is known for any of these classes. In this paper we present a 3-approximation algorithm for the class of chordal graphs. The analysis of our algorithm is based on a graph theoretic lemma of independent interest.  相似文献

We present a new approach for the problem of finding overlapping communities in graphs and social networks. Our approach consists of a novel problem definition and three accompanying algorithms. We are particularly interested in graphs that have labels on their vertices, although our methods are also applicable to graphs with no labels. Our goal is to find k communities so that the total edge density over all k communities is maximized. In the case of labeled graphs, we require that each community is succinctly described by a set of labels. This requirement provides a better understanding for the discovered communities. The proposed problem formulation leads to the discovery of vertex-overlapping and dense communities that cover as many graph edges as possible. We capture these properties with a simple objective function, which we solve by adapting efficient approximation algorithms for the generalized maximum-coverage problem and the densest-subgraph problem. Our proposed algorithm is a generic greedy scheme. We experiment with three variants of the scheme, obtained by varying the greedy step of finding a dense subgraph. We validate our algorithms by comparing with other state-of-the-art community-detection methods on a variety of performance measures. Our experiments confirm that our algorithms achieve results of high quality in terms of the reported measures, and are practical in terms of performance.  相似文献

The k-truss of a graph is the largest edge-induced subgraph such that every edge is contained in at least k triangles within the subgraph, where a triangle is a cycle consisting of three vertices. As a new notion of cohesive subgraphs, truss has recently attracted a lot of research attentions in the database and data mining fields. At the same time, uncertainty is an intrinsic property of massive graph data, and truss decomposition (i.e., finding all k-trusses of a graph) has become a key primitive on uncertain graphs. In this paper, we study the truss decomposition problem on uncertain graphs, that is, finding all highly probable k-trusses of an uncertain graph. We first give an formal statement of the truss decomposition problem on uncertain graphs. Then, we prove that the truss decomposition of an uncertain graph attains two elegant properties, namely uniqueness and hierarchy. We show that the truss decomposition of an uncertain graph can be found in \(O(m^{1.5}Q)\) time by proposing an in-memory algorithm called \(\mathtt {TD_{mem}}\), where m is the number of edges of the uncertain graph, and Q is at most the maximum number of common neighbors of the endpoints of an edge. When an uncertain graph is too large to fit into main memory, we propose an external-memory algorithm \(\mathtt {TD_{I/O}}\) to find the truss decomposition of the uncertain graph. Extensive experiments have been carried out to evaluate the practical performance of the proposed algorithms. The experimental results verify that both \(\mathtt {TD_{mem}}\) and \(\mathtt {TD_{I/O}}\) are efficient when an uncertain graph is small enough to fit into main memory, and that \(\mathtt {TD_{I/O}}\) is much faster than \(\mathtt {TD_{mem}}\) when the graph is too large to fit into main memory.  相似文献

A k-spanner of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G in which the distance between any pair of vertices is at most k times the distance in G. We prove that for fixed k,w, the problem of deciding if a given graph has a k-spanner of treewidth w is fixed-parameter tractable on graphs of bounded degree. In particular, this implies that finding a k-spanner that is a tree (a tree k-spanner) is fixed-parameter tractable on graphs of bounded degree. In contrast, we observe that if the graph has only one vertex of unbounded degree, then Treek-Spanner is NP-complete for k?4.  相似文献
