Here the influence of annealing on the operational efficiency of all‐polymer solar cells based on blends of the polymers poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly((9,9‐dioctylfluorene)‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐[4,7‐bis(3‐hexylthiophen‐5‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole]‐2′,2″‐diyl) (F8TBT) is investigated. Annealing of completed devices is found to result in an increase in power conversion efficiency from 0.14 to 1.20%, while annealing of films prior to top electrode deposition increases device efficiency to only 0.19% due to a lowering of the open‐circuit voltage and short‐circuit current. By studying the dependence of photocurrent on intensity and effective applied bias, annealing is found to increase charge generation efficiency through an increase in the efficiency of the separation of bound electron‐hole pairs following charge transfer. However, unlike many other all‐polymer blends, this increase in charge separation efficiency is not only due to an increase in the degree of phase separation that assists in the spatial separation of electron‐hole pairs, but also due to an order of magnitude increase in the hole mobility of the P3HT phase. The increase in hole mobility with annealing is attributed to the ordering of P3HT chains evidenced by the red‐shifting of P3HT optical absorption in the blend. We also use X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to study the influence of annealing protocol on film interface composition. Surprisingly both top and bottom electrode/blend interfaces are enriched with P3HT, with the blend/top electrode interface consisting of more than 95% P3HT for as‐spun films and films annealed without a top electrode. Films annealed following top electrode deposition, however, show an increase in F8TBT composition to ~15%. The implications of interfacial composition and the origin of open‐circuit voltage in these devices are also discussed.  相似文献

Here, studies on the evolution of photophysics and device performance with annealing of blends of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) with the two polyfluorene copolymers poly((9,9‐dioctylfluorene)‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐[4,7‐bis(3‐hexylthien‐5‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole]‐2′,2′′‐diyl) (F8TBT) and poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) are reported. In blends with F8TBT, P3HT is found to reorganize at low annealing temperatures (100 °C or below), evidenced by a redshift of both absorption and photoluminescence (PL), and by a decrease in PL lifetime. Annealing to 140 °C, however, is found to optimize device performance, accompanied by an increase in PL efficiency and lifetime. Grazing‐incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering is also performed to study the evolution in film nanomorphology with annealing, with the 140 °C‐annealed film showing enhanced phase separation. It is concluded that reorganization of P3HT alone is not sufficient to optimize device performance but must also be accompanied by a coarsening of the morphology to promote charge separation. The shape of the photocurrent action spectra of P3HT:F8TBT devices is also studied, aided by optical modeling of the absorption spectrum of the blend in a device structure. Changes in the shape of the photocurrent action spectra with annealing are observed, and these are attributed to changes in the relative contribution of each polymer to photocurrent as morphology and polymer conformation evolve. In particular, in as‐spun films from xylene, photocurrent is preferentially generated from ordered P3HT segments attributed to the increased charge separation efficiency in ordered P3HT compared to disordered P3HT. For optimized devices, photocurrent is efficiently generated from both P3HT and F8TBT. In contrast to blends with F8TBT, P3HT is only found to reorganize in blends with F8BT at annealing temperatures of over 200 °C. The low efficiency of the P3HT:F8BT system can then be attributed to poor charge generation and separation efficiencies that result from the failure of P3HT to reorganize.  相似文献

How annealing influences the morphology of a highly regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (RR‐P3HT) film at the substrate interface as well as the lateral inhomogeneity in the electronic structure of the film are elucidated. Whereas previous studies have reported that high‐molecular‐weight (MW) RR‐P3HT films tend to show low crystallinity even after annealing, it is found that high‐MW RR‐P3HT does show high crystallinity after annealing at high temperature for a long time. Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM), X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy results clearly resolve a considerable lateral inhomogeneity in the morphology of RR‐P3HT film, which results in a variation of the electronic structure depending on the local crystallinity. The PEEM results show how annealing facilitates crystal growth in a high‐MW RR‐P3HT film.  相似文献

Blends of nanocrystalline zinc oxide nanoparticles (nc‐ZnO) and regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) processed from solution have been used to construct hybrid polymer–metal oxide bulk‐heterojunction solar cells. Thermal annealing of the spin‐cast films significantly improves the solar‐energy conversion efficiency of these hybrid solar cells to ~ 0.9 %. Photoluminescence and photoinduced absorption spectroscopy demonstrate that charge‐carrier generation is not quantitative, because a fraction of P3HT appears not to be in contact with or in close proximity to ZnO. The coarse morphology of the films, also identified by tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy, likely limits the device performance.  相似文献

The in situ morphology change upon thermal annealing in bulk heterojunction blend films of regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and 1‐(3‐methoxycarbonyl)‐propyl‐1‐phenyl‐(6,6)C61 (PCBM) is measured by a grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction (GIXD) method using a synchrotron radiation source. The results show that the film morphology—including the size and population of P3HT crystallites—abruptly changes at 140 °C between 5 and 30 min and is then stable up to 120 min. This trend is almost in good agreement with the performance change of polymer solar cells fabricated under the same conditions. The certain morphology change after 5 min annealing at 140 °C is assigned to the on‐going thermal transition of P3HT molecules in the presence of PCBM transition. Field‐emission scanning electron microscopy measurements show that the crack‐like surface of blend films becomes smaller after a very short annealing time, but does not change further with increasing annealing time. These findings indicate that the stability of P3HT:PCBM solar cells cannot be secured by short‐time annealing owing to the unsettled morphology, even though the resulting efficiency is high.  相似文献

Processing solvent additives in polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction systems are known as a promising method to enhance photovoltaic performance. It is generally agreed that solvent additives enable polymers to have a high degree of molecular order which increases the device performance. However, the understanding of the efficiency enhancement is not complete. There is a lack of insight regarding the quantitative determination of the molecular miscibility between polymer and fullerene as well as the inner morphology changes induced by the additives. In this work, understanding of the influence of the solvent additive 1,8‐octanedithiol (ODT) is provided on the classic system poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl):[6,6]‐phenyl‐C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) films. The impact on polymer crystallinity, surface structure, inner morphology, and quantitative molecular miscibility of P3HT and PCBM is studied as a function of ODT volume concentration. The crystallinity is probed with absorption spectroscopy and grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering. The morphology and miscibility are characterized via atomic force microscopy and time‐of‐flight grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering. Besides an increased crystallinity and prominent phase separation, ODT increases the solubility of PCBM in P3HT and reduces the size of amorphous P3HT domains. Moreover, solvent processing with a high ODT concentration alters the vertical material composition of the active layer.  相似文献

Changes in the nanoscale morphologies of the blend films of poly (3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), for high‐performance bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, are compared and investigated for two annealing treatments with different morphology evolution time scales, having special consideration for the diffusion and aggregation of PCBM molecules. An annealing condition with relatively fast diffusion and aggregation of the PCBM molecules during P3HT crystallization results in poor BHJ morphology because of prevention of the formation of the more elongated P3HT crystals. However, an annealing condition, accelerating PCBM diffusion after the formation of a well‐ordered morphology, results in a relatively stable morphology with less destruction of crystalline P3HT. Based on these results, an effective strategy for determining an optimized annealing treatment is suggested that considers the effect of relative kinetics on the crystallization of the components for a blend film with a new BHJ materials pair, upon which BHJ solar cells are based.  相似文献

Disordered nanoporous silver (NPAg) thin films fabricated by a thermally assisted dewetting method are employed as a platform to influence chain alignment, morphology, and optical properties of three well‐known conjugated polymers. Grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS) measurements show that the porous structure of the metal induces close π–π stacking of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) chains and extended, planar chain conformations of poly(9,9‐di‐n‐octylfluorenyl‐2,7‐diyl) (PFO) and poly[(9,9‐di‐n‐octylfluorenyl‐2,7‐diyl)‐alt‐(benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazol‐4,8‐diyl)] (F8BT). A greater degree of vertically‐oriented P3HT chains are found on NPAg compared with planar Ag. However, PFO and F8BT chain alignment is only affected when pore size is large. The optical properties of NPAg films are investigated by transmission and back‐scattering spectroscopies. Strong back‐scattering is observed for all NPAg morphologies, especially for NPAg with small pore sizes. Photoluminescence spectroscopy of conjugated polymer layers on NPAg showed pronounced emission enhancements (up to factors of 26) relative to layers on glass. The enhancements are attributed primarily to: 1) redistribution of conjugated polymer emission by Ag; 2) redirection of emission by polymer‐filled nanopores; and 3) local electromagnetic field effects. This work demonstrates the potential of NPAg‐thin films to influence molecular chain morphology and to improve light‐extraction in organic optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

A fundamental understanding of the relationship between the bulk morphology and device performance is required for the further development of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. Here, non‐optimized (chloroform cast) and nearly optimized (solvent‐annealed o‐dichlorobenzene cast) P3HT:PCBM blend films treated over a range of annealing temperatures are studied via optical and photovoltaic device measurements. Parameters related to the P3HT aggregate morphology in the blend are obtained through a recently established analytical model developed by F. C. Spano for the absorption of weakly interacting H‐aggregates. Thermally induced changes are related to the glass transition range of the blend. In the chloroform prepared devices, the improvement in device efficiency upon annealing within the glass transition range can be attributed to the growth of P3HT aggregates, an overall increase in the percentage of chain crystallinity, and a concurrent increase in the hole mobilities. Films treated above the glass transition range show an increase in efficiency and fill factor not only associated with the change in chain crystallinity, but also with a decrease in the energetic disorder. On the other hand, the properties of the P3HT phase in the solvent‐annealed o‐dichlorobenzene cast blends are almost indistinguishable from those of the corresponding pristine P3HT layer and are only weakly affected by thermal annealing. Apparently, slow drying of the blend allows the P3HT chains to crystallize into large domains with low degrees of intra‐ and interchain disorder. This morphology appears to be most favorable for the efficient generation and extraction of charges.  相似文献

The operation of resistive switches based on phase‐separated blends of organic ferroelectrics and semiconductors depends significantly on the microstructure of such systems. A wide range of analysis techniques are used to characterize spin‐coated films of the ferroelectric random copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF‐TrFE)], and the semiconducting polymer, regio‐irregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (rir‐P3HT). The blend separates into amorphous rir‐P3HT domains embedded in a crystalline P(VDF‐TrFE) matrix. The rir‐P3HT domains are continuous throughout the film, from the substrate/blend interface to the blend/air interface. We also investigate the rir‐P3HT domain size and number as a function of composition and find – unexpectedly – a rather mono‐disperse domain size distribution for a given rir‐P3HT:P(VDF‐TrFE) ratio. The domain size increases with rir‐P3HT content, indicating that the solidification is not dominated by nucleation processes. Spinodal decomposition is therefore more likely to be responsible for the microstructure induced in the rir‐P3HT:P(VDF‐TrFE) blends. Since spinodal decomposition occurs spontaneously without the presence of a nucleation step, this can facilitate processing considerably, since the intricate control of nucleation processes (homogenous or heterogenous) is rendered unnecessary. Measurement of the lateral conductivity of the blends demonstrates that the rir‐P3HT domains are electrically not connected, supporting the microstructural evidence. A perpendicular current through the film is measured using both Au and Ag electrodes as a function of blend composition. A model was used to interpret the electrical transport. The injection for Ag diodes poled into the ON‐state preferentially occurs at the circumference of the rir‐P3HT domains. An accumulation width over which the injection occurs is estimated to be of the order of a few hundred nm.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a facile microwave-assisted approach for annealing sol-gel derived ZnO films to serve as electron transport layers (ETLs) for inverted bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells. We have demonstrated an impressive enhancement in performance for devices based on a poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): (6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) system employing the microwave-annealed ZnO (ZnO (MW)) ETLs in comparison to the cases using the conventional hotplate-annealed ZnO (ZnO (HP)) ones. The better electron transport in the device with the ZnO (MW) ETL is mainly ascribed to the preferable interfacial contact as evidenced by the morphology characteristics. Furthermore, the comprehensive analyses conducted from the light intensity dependent photocurrent and photovoltage measurements, the capacitance-voltage characteristics, and the alternating current impedance spectra suggest that the utilization of the ZnO (MW) ETLs can effectively suppress trap-assisted recombination as well as charge accumulation at the interface between P3HT: PC61BM layers and ZnO layers, which is responsible for the enhanced device performance.  相似文献

Grazing incidence X‐ray scattering (GIXS) is used to characterize the morphology of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT)–phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) thin film bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blends as a function of thermal annealing temperature, from room temperature to 220 °C. A custom‐built heating chamber for in situ GIXS studies allows for the morphological characterization of thin films at elevated temperatures. Films annealed with a thermal gradient allow for the rapid investigation of the morphology over a range of temperatures that corroborate the results of the in situ experiments. Using these techniques the following are observed: the melting points of each component; an increase in the P3HT coherence length with annealing below the P3HT melting temperature; the formation of well‐oriented P3HT crystallites with the (100) plane parallel to the substrate, when cooled from the melt; and the cold crystallization of PCBM associated with the PCBM glass transition temperature. The incorporation of these materials into BHJ blends affects the nature of these transitions as a function of blend ratio. These results provide a deeper understanding of the physics of how thermal annealing affects the morphology of polymer–fullerene BHJ blends and provides tools to manipulate the blend morphology in order to develop high‐performance organic solar cell devices.  相似文献

Hybrid bulk heterojunction solar cells based on nanocrystalline TiO2 (nc‐TiO2) nanorods capped with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) and regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) are processed from solution and characterized in order to relate the device function (optical absorption, charge separation, and transport and photovoltaic properties) to active‐layer properties and device parameters. Annealing the blend films is found to greatly improve the polymer–metal oxide interaction at the nc‐TiO2/P3HT interface, resulting in a six‐fold increase of the charge separation yield and improved photovoltaic device performance under simulated solar illumination. In addition, the influence of the organic ligand at the nc‐TiO2 particle surface is found to be crucial for charge separation. Ligand‐exchange procedures applied on the TOPO‐capped nc‐TiO2 nanorods with an amphiphilic ruthenium‐based dye are found to further improve the charge‐separation yield at the polymer–nanocrystal interface. However, the poor photocurrents generated in the hybrid blend devices, before and after ligand exchange, suggest that transport within or between nanoparticles limits performance. By comparison with other donor–acceptor bulk heterojunction systems, we conclude that charge transport in the nc‐TiO2:P3HT blend films is limited by the presence of an intrinsic trap distribution mainly associated with the nc‐TiO2 particles.  相似文献

We utilize transient techniques to directly compare the operation of polymer/fullerene, polymer/nanocrystal, and polymer/polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells. For all devices, poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is used as the electron donating polymer, in combination with either the fullerene derivative phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in polymer/fullerene cells, CdSe nanoparticles in polymer/nanocrystal cells, or the polyfluorene copolymer poly((9,9‐dioctylfluorene)‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐[4,7‐bis(3‐hexylthien‐5‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole]‐2,2‐diyl) (F8TBT) in polymer/polymer cells. Transient photocurrent and photovoltage measurements are used to probe the dynamics of charge‐separated carriers, with vastly different dynamic behavior observed for polymer/fullerene, polymer/polymer, and polymer/nanocrystal devices on the microsecond to millisecond timescale. Furthermore, by employing transient photocurrent analysis with different applied voltages we are also able to probe the dynamics behavior of these cells from short circuit to open circuit. P3HT/F8TBT and P3HT/CdSe devices are characterized by poor charge extraction of the long‐lived carriers attributed to charge trapping. P3HT/PCBM devices, in contrast, show relatively trap‐free operation with the variation in the photocurrent decay kinetics with applied bias at low intensity, consistent with the drift of free charges under a uniform electric field. Under solar conditions at the maximum power point, we see direct evidence of bimolecular recombination in the P3HT/PCBM device competing with charge extraction. Transient photovoltage measurements reveal that, at open circuit, photogenerated charges have similar lifetimes in all device types, and hence, the extraction of these long‐lived charges is a limiting process in polymer/nanocrystal and polymer/polymer devices.  相似文献

A method which enables the investigation of the buried interfaces without altering the properties of the polymer films is used to study vertical phase separation of spin‐coated poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT):fullerene derivative blends. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis reveals the P3HT enrichment at the free (air) surfaces and abundance of fullerene derivatives at the organic/substrate interfaces. The vertical phase separation is attributed to the surface energy difference of the components and their interactions with the substrates. This inhomogeneous distribution of the donor and acceptor components significantly affects photovoltaic device performance and makes the inverted device structure a promising choice.  相似文献

A high‐resolution near‐field spectroscopic mapping technique is successfully applied to investigate the influence of thermal annealing on the morphology of a poly(3‐hexylthiophene) and [6,6]‐penyl‐C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) blend film. Based on the simultaneously recorded morphological and spectroscopic information, the interplay among the blend film morphology, the local P3HT:PCBM molecular distribution, and the P3HT photoluminescence (PL) quenching efficiency are systematically discussed. The PL and Raman signals of the electron donor (P3HT) and acceptor (PCBM) are probed at an optical resolution of approximately 10 nm, which allows the chemical nature of the different domains to be identified directly. In addition, the local PL quenching efficiency, which is related to the electron transfer from P3HT to PCBM, is quantitatively revealed. From these experimental results, it is proposed that high‐resolution near‐field spectroscopic imaging is capable of mapping the local chemical composition and photophysics of the P3HT:PCBM blends on a scale of a few nanometers.  相似文献

The performance of polymer:polymer solar cells that are made using blend films of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐ benzothiadiazole (F8BT) is improved by doping the F8BT polymer with an organosulfonic acid [4‐ethylbezenesulfonic acid (EBSA)]. The EBSA doping of F8BT, to form F8BT‐EBSA, is performed by means of a two‐stage reaction at room temperature and 60°C with various EBSA weight ratios. The X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement reveals that both sulfur and nitrogen atoms in the F8BT polymer are affected by the EBSA doping. The F8BT‐EBSA films exhibit huge photoluminescence quenching, ionization potential shift toward lower energy, and greatly enhanced electron mobility. The short‐circuit current density of solar cells is improved by ca. twofold (10 wt.% EBSA doping), while the open‐circuit voltage increases by ca. 0.4 V. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency was improved by ca. threefold, even though the optical density of the P3HT:F8BT‐EBSA blend film is reduced by 10 wt.% EBSA doping due to the nanostructure and surface morphology change.  相似文献

High electron mobility and ambipolar charge transport are observed in phase‐separated binary blends of n‐type poly(benzobisimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) with p‐type polymer semiconductors, poly[(thiophene‐2,5‐diyl)‐alt‐(2,3‐diheptylquinoxaline‐5,8‐diyl)] (PTHQx) and poly(10‐hexylphenoxazine‐3,7‐diyl‐alt‐3‐hexyl‐2,5‐thiophene) (POT). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show phase‐separated domains of 50–300 nm in the binary blend thin films. The TEM images and electron diffraction of BBL/PTHQx blends show the growth of single‐crystalline phases of PTHQx within the BBL matrix. A relatively high electron mobility (1.0 × 10–3 cm2 V–1 s–1) that is constant over a wide blend‐composition range is observed in the PTHQx blend field‐effect transistors (FETs). Ambipolar charge transport is observed in both blend systems at a very high concentration of the p‐type semiconductor (≥90 wt % PTHQx or ≥80 wt % POT). Ambipolar charge transport is exemplified by an electron mobility of 1.4 × 10–5 cm2 V–1 s–1 and a hole mobility of 1.0 × 10–4 cm2 V–1 s–1 observed in the 98 wt % PTHQx blend FETs. These results show that ambipolar charge transport and the associated carrier mobilities in blends of conjugated polymer semiconductors have a complex dependence on the blend composition and the phase‐separated morphology.  相似文献

We investigate thin poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl)/[6,6]‐phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) films, which are widely used as active layers in plastic solar cells. Their structural properties are studied by grazing‐incidence X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The size and the orientation of crystalline P3HT nanodomains within the films are determined. PCBM crystallites are not detected in thin films by XRD. Upon annealing, the P3HT crystallinity increases, leading to an increase in the optical absorption and spectral photocurrent in the low‐photon‐energy region. As a consequence, the efficiency of P3HT/PCBM solar cells is significantly increased. A direct relation between efficiency and P3HT crystallinity is demonstrated.  相似文献

Charge injection processes in polymer: fullerene composite diodes have been investigated for blend films of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and methanofullerene (PCBM) using spectroscopic techniques combined with bias application, termed a device modulation (DM) spectroscopic technique. The voltage dependence of DM signals under the dark condition demonstrates that injection of mobile carriers into P3HT in the blend diode occurs at much lower voltage than that for a P3HT diode, suggesting that the bulk-hetero junction structure of the blend film induces inhomogeneity in the energy level and partly lowers the barrier for carrier injection. Recombination processes of injected P3HT carriers for the blend device in the dark are analyzed by the frequency dependence of DM signals and found to be dominated by bimolecular recombination processes. The DM measurements under illumination demonstrate that, although charge injection under illumination occurs to the same extent as that in the dark condition, some photo-generated charge-transfer states at the interface of P3HT and PCBM are lost on a slow timescale by recombination with injected carriers.  相似文献
