Charge carrier injection and transport in polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) is strongly limited by the energy level offset at organic/(in)organic interfaces and the mismatch in electron and hole mobilities. Herein, these limitations are overcome via electrochemical doping of a light‐emitting polymer. Less than 1 wt% of doping agent is enough to effectively tune charge injection and balance and hence significantly improve PLED performance. For thick single‐layer (1.2 µm) PLEDs, dramatic reductions in current and luminance turn‐on voltages (VJ = 11.6 V from 20.0 V and VL = 12.7 V from 19.8 V with/without doping) accompanied by reduced efficiency roll‐off are observed. For thinner (<100 nm) PLEDs, electrochemical doping removes a thickness dependence on VJ and VL, enabling homogeneous electroluminescence emission in large‐area doped devices. Such efficient charge injection and balance properties achieved in doped PLEDs are attributed to a strong electrochemical interaction between the polymer and the doping agents, which is probed by in situ electric‐field‐dependent Raman spectroscopy combined with further electrical and energetic analysis. This approach to control charge injection and balance in solution‐processed PLEDs by low electrochemical doping provides a simple yet feasible strategy for developing high‐quality and efficient lighting applications that are fully compatible with printing technologies.  相似文献

The charge transport and recombination in white‐emitting polymer light‐ emitting diodes (PLEDs) are studied. The PLED investigated has a single emissive layer consisting of a copolymer in which a green and red dye are incorporated in a blue backbone. From single‐carrier devices the effect of the green‐ and red‐emitting dyes on the hole and electron transport is determined. The red dye acts as a deep electron trap thereby strongly reducing the electron transport. By incorporating trap‐assisted recombination for the red emission and bimolecular Langevin recombination for the blue emission, the current and light output of the white PLED can be consistently described. The color shift of single‐layer white‐emitting PLEDs can be explained by the different voltage dependencies of trap‐assisted and bimolecular recombination.  相似文献

The charge transport in blue light‐emitting polyspirobifluorene is investigated by both steady‐state current‐voltage measurements and transient electroluminescence. Both measurement techniques yield consistent results and show that the hole transport is space‐charge limited. The electron current is found to be governed by a high intrinsic mobility in combination with electron traps. Numerical simulations on light‐emitting diodes reveal a shift in the recombination zone from the cathode to the anode with increasing bias.  相似文献

MXenes (Ti3C2) are 2D transition‐metal carbides and carbonitrides with high conductivity and optical transparency. However, transparent MXene electrodes suitable for polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) have rarely been demonstrated. With the discovery of the excellent electrical stability of MXene under an alternating current (AC), herein, PLEDs that employ MXene electrodes and exhibit high performance under AC operation (AC MXene PLEDs) are presented. The PLED exhibits a turn‐on voltage, current efficiency, and brightness of 2.1 V, 7 cd A?1, and 12 547 cd m?2, respectively, when operated under AC with a frequency of 1 kHz. The results indicate that the undesirable electric breakdown associated with heat arising from the poor interface of the MXene with a hole transport layer in the direct‐current mode is efficiently suppressed by the transient injection of carriers accompanied by the alternating change of the electric polarity under the AC, giving rise to reliable light emission with a high efficiency. The solution‐processable MXene electrode can be readily fabricated on a flexible polymer substrate, allowing for the development of a mechanically flexible AC MXene PLED with a higher performance than flexible PLEDs employing solution‐processed nanomaterial‐based electrodes such as carbon nanotubes, reduced graphene oxide, and Ag nanowires.  相似文献

The ability to control organic‐organic interfaces in conjugated polymer blends is critical for further device improvement. Here, we control the phase separation in blends of poly(9,9‐di‐n‐octylfluorene‐alt‐benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) and poly(9,9‐di‐n‐octylfluorene‐alt‐(1,4‐phenylene‐((4‐sec‐butylphenyl)imino)‐1,4‐phenylene) (TFB) via chemical modification of the substrate by microcontact printing of octenyltrichlorosilane molecules. The lateral phase‐separated structures in the blend film closely replicate the underlying micrometer‐scale chemical pattern. We found nanometer‐scale vertical segregation of the polymers within both lateral domains, with regions closer to the substrate being substantially pure phases of either polymer. Such phase separation has important implications for the performance of light‐emitting diodes fabricated using these patterned blend films. In the absence of a continuous TFB wetting layer at the substrate interface, as typically formed in spin‐coated blend films, charge carrier injection is confined in the well‐defined TFB‐rich domains. This confinement leads to high electroluminescence efficiency, whereas the overall reduction in the roughness of the patterned blend film results in slower decay of device efficiency at high voltages. In addition, the amount of surface out‐coupling of light in the forward direction observed in these blend devices is found to be strongly correlated to the distribution of periodicity of the phase‐separated structures in the active layer.  相似文献

The mechanism of charge generation in transition metal oxide (TMO)‐based charge‐generation layers (CGL) used in stacked organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) is reported upon. An interconnecting unit between two vertically stacked OLEDs, consisting of an abrupt heterointerface between a Cs2CO3‐doped 4,7‐diphenyl‐1,10‐phenanthroline layer and a WO3 film is investigated. Minimum thicknesses are determined for these layers to allow for simultaneous operation of both sub‐OLEDs in the stacked device. Luminance–current density–voltage measurements, angular dependent spectral emission characteristics, and optical device simulations lead to minimum thicknesses of the n‐type doped layer and the TMO layer of 5 and 2.5 nm, respectively. Using data on interface energetic determined by ultraviolet photoelectron and inverse photoemission spectroscopy, it is shown that the actual charge generation occurs between the WO3 layer and its neighboring hole‐transport material, 4,4',4”‐tris(N‐carbazolyl)‐triphenyl amine. The role of the adjacent n‐type doped electron transport layer is only to facilitate electron injection from the TMO into the adjacent sub‐OLED.  相似文献

A blend of two hole‐dominant polymers is created and used as the light emissive layer in light‐emitting diodes to achieve high luminous efficiency up to 22 cd A?1. The polymer blend F81?xSYx is based on poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (F8) and poly(para‐phenylene vinylene) derivative superyellow (SY). The blend system exhibits a preferential vertical concentration distribution. The resulting energy landscape modifies the overall charge transport behavior of the blend emissive layer. The large difference between the highest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of F8 (5.8 eV) and SY (5.3 eV) introduces hole traps at SY sites within the F8 polymer matrix. This slows down the hole mobility and facilitates a balance between the transport behavior of both the charge carriers. The balance due to such energy landscape facilitates efficient formation of excitons within the emission zone well away from the cathode and minimizes the surface quenching effects. By bringing the light‐emission zone in the middle of the F81?xSYx film, the bulk of the film is exploited for the light emission. Due to the charge trapping nature of SY molecules in F8 matrix and pushing the emission zone in the center, the radiative recombination rate also increases, resulting in excellent device performance.  相似文献

It has recently been reported that, after electrical conditioning, an ohmic hole contact is formed in poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (PFO)‐based polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLED), despite the large hole‐injection barrier obtained with a poly(styrene sulfonic acid)‐doped poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT:PSS) anode. We demonstrate that the initial current at low voltages in a PEDOT:PSS/PFO‐based PLED is electron dominated. The voltage at which the hole injection is enhanced strongly depends on the electron‐transport properties of the device, which can be modified by the replacement of reactive end groups by monomers in the synthesis. Our measurements reveal that the switching voltage of the PLED is governed by the electron concentration at the PEDOT:PSS/PFO contact. The switching effect in PFO is only observed for a PEDOT:PSS hole contact and not for other anodes such as indium tin oxide or Ag.  相似文献

We use electromodulation spectroscopy and modeling studies to probe the electric‐field distribution in polyfluorene‐based polymer light‐emitting diodes containing poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrene sulfonate). The bulk internal field is shown to be zero under ordinary operating conditions, with trapped electrons close to the anode fully screening the bulk semiconductor from the external field. The effect has far‐reaching implications for the understanding and optimization of organic devices.  相似文献

Light‐emitting diodes exhibiting efficient pure‐white‐light electroluminescence have been successfully developed by using a single polymer: polyfluorene derivatives with 1,8‐naphthalimide chromophores chemically doped onto the polyfluorene backbones. By adjusting the emission wavelength of the 1,8‐naphthalimide components and optimizing the relative content of 1,8‐naphthalimide derivatives in the resulting polymers, white‐light electroluminescence from a single polymer, as opposed to a polymer blend, has been obtained in a device with a configuration of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)(50 nm)/polymer(80 nm)/Ca(10 nm)/Al(100 nm). The device exhibits Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.32,0.36), a maximum brightness of 11 900 cd m–2, a current efficiency of 3.8 cd A–1, a power efficiency of 2.0 lm W–1, an external quantum efficiency of 1.50 %, and quite stable color coordinates at different driving voltages, even at high luminances of over 5000 cd m–2.  相似文献

We describe the preparation of a dendrimer that is solution‐processible and contains 2‐ethylhexyloxy surface groups, biphenyl‐based dendrons, and a fac‐tris[2‐(2,4‐difluorophenyl)pyridyl]iridium(III ) core. The homoleptic complex is highly luminescent and the color of emission is similar to the heteroleptic iridium(III ) complex, bis[2‐(2,4‐difluorophenyl)pyridyl]picolinate iridium(III ) (FIrpic). To avoid the change in emission color that would arise from attaching a conjugated dendron to the ligand, the conjugation between the dendron and the ligand is decoupled by separating them with an ethane linkage. Bilayer devices containing a light‐emitting layer comprised of a 30 wt.‐% blend of the dendrimer in 1,3‐bis(N‐carbazolyl)benzene (mCP) and a 1,3,5‐tris(2‐N‐phenylbenzimidazolyl)benzene electron‐transport layer have external quantum and power efficiencies, respectively, of 10.4 % and 11 lm W–1 at 100 cd m–2 and 6.4 V. These efficiencies are higher than those reported for more complex device structures prepared via evaporation that contain FIrpic blended with mCP as the emitting layer, showing the advantage of using a dendritic structure to control processing and intermolecular interactions. The external quantum efficiency of 10.4 % corresponds to the maximum achievable efficiency based on the photoluminescence quantum yield of the emissive film and the standard out‐coupling of light from the device.  相似文献

The spectral characteristics of polyfluorene (PF)‐based light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) containing a defined low concentration of either keto‐defects or of the polymer poly(9,9‐octylfluorene‐co‐benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) are presented. Both types of blend layers were tested in different device configurations with respect to the relative and absolute intensities of green and blue emission components. It is shown that blending hole‐transporting molecules into the emission layer at low concentration or incorporation of a suitable hole‐transporting layer reduces the green emission contribution in the electroluminescence (EL) spectrum of the PF:F8BT blend, which is similar to what is observed for the keto‐containing PF layer. We conclude that the keto‐defects in PF homopolymer layers mainly constitute weakly emissive electron traps, in agreement with the results of quantum‐mechanical calculations.  相似文献

A study of hybrid light‐emitting diodes (HyLEDs) fabricated with and without solution‐processible Cs2CO3 and Ba(OH)2 inorganic interlayers is presented. The interlayers are deposited between a zinc oxide electron‐injection layer and a fluorescent emissive polymer poly(9‐dioctyl fluorine–alt‐benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) layer, with a thermally evaporated MoO3/Au layer used as top anode contact. In comparison to Cs2CO3, the Ba(OH)2 interlayer shows improved charge carrier balance in bipolar devices and reduced exciton quenching in photoluminance studies at the ZnO/Ba(OH)2/F8BT interface compared to the Cs2CO3 interlayer. A luminance efficiency of ≈28 cd A?1 (external quantum efficiency (EQE) ≈ 9%) is achieved for ≈1.2 μm thick single F8BT layer based HyLEDs. Enhanced out‐coupling with the aid of a hemispherical lens allows further efficiency improvement by a factor of 1.7, increasing the luminance efficiency to ≈47cd A?1, corresponding to an EQE of 15%. The photovoltaic response of these structures is also studied to gain an insight into the effects of interfacial properties on the photoinduced charge generation and back‐recombination, which reveal that Ba(OH)2 acts as better hole blocking layer than the Cs2CO3 interlayer.  相似文献

Metal halide perovskites have aroused tremendous interest in the past several years for their promising applications in display and lighting. However, the development of blue perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) still lags far behind that of their green and red cousins due to the difficulty in obtaining high‐quality blue perovskite emissive layers. In this study, a simple approach is conceived to improve the emission and electrical properties of blue perovskites. By introducing an alkali metal ion to occupy some sites of peripheral suspended organic ligands, the nonradiative recombination is suppressed, and, consequently, blue CsPb(Br/Cl)3 nanocrystals with a high photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 38.4% are obtained. The introduced K+ acts as a new type of metal ligand, which not only suppresses nonradiative pathways but also improves the charge carrier transport of the perovskite nanocrystals. With further engineering of the device structure to balance the charge injection rate, a spectrally stable and efficient blue PeLED with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.96% at the emission peak of 477 nm is fabricated.  相似文献

Highly power‐efficient white organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) are still challenging to make for applications in high‐quality displays and general lighting due to optical confinement and energy loss during electron‐photon conversion. Here, an efficient white OLED structure is shown that combines deterministic aperiodic nanostructures for broadband quasi‐omnidirectional light extraction and a multilayer energy cascade structure for energy‐efficient photon generation. The external quantum efficiency and power efficiency are raised to 54.6% and 123.4 lm W?1 at 1000 cd m?2. An extremely small roll‐off in efficiency at high luminance is also obtained, yielding a striking value of 106.5 lm W?1 at 5000 cd m?2. In addition to a substantial increase in efficiency, this device structure simultaneously offers the superiority of angular color stability over the visible wavelength range compared to conventional OLEDs. It is anticipated that these findings could open up new opportunities to promote white OLEDs for commercial applications.  相似文献

Light‐emitting conjugated oligomers comprising anthracene, naphthalene, and fluorene units have been synthesized to investigate three configurations of blue organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) that are designed to identify the origins of device instability. The transient OLED technique is employed to measure hole mobilities, which are found to be 3.1 × 10–4, 8.9 × 10–5, and 3.6 × 10–5 cm2 V–1 s–1 for three different blue‐light‐emitting model compounds with varying fluorene content. A higher hole mobility through the emissive layer results in a wider recombination zone, which, in turn, is responsible for a longer device lifetime and a lower drive voltage at the expense of luminance yield.  相似文献

We report an efficient non‐doped all‐polymer polymer white‐light‐emitting diode (PWLED) with a fluorescent three‐color, white single polymer as an emissive layer, an ethanol‐soluble phosphonate‐functionalized polyfluorene (PF‐EP) as an electron‐injection/electron‐transport layer, and LiF/Al as a cathode, respectively. The all‐polymer PWLED achieves a peak external quantum efficiency of 6.7%, a forward viewing luminous efficiency of 15.4 cd A?1 and a power efficiency of 11.4 lm W?1, respectively, at a brightness of 347 cd m?2 with Commission Internationale d’Eclairage coordinates of (0.37, 0.42) and color rendering index of 85, which is the best results among the non‐doped PWLEDs. Moreover, this kind of PWLED not only shows excellent color stability, but also achieves high brightness at low voltages. The brightness reaches 1000, 10000, and 46830 cd m?2 at voltages of 4.5, 5.4, and 7.5 V, respectively. The significant enhancement of white‐single‐polymer‐based PWLEDs with PF‐EP/LiF/Al to replace for the commonly used Ca/Al cathode is attributed to the more efficient electron injection at PF‐EP/LiF/Al interfaces, and the coordinated protecting effect of PF‐EP from diffusion of Al atoms into the emissive layer and exciton‐quenching near cathode interfaces. The developed highly efficient non‐doped all‐polymer PWLEDs are well suitable for solution‐processing technology and provide a huge potential of low‐cost large‐area manufacturing for PWLEDs.  相似文献
