Radiation-induced cerebral meningiomas. Case reports

BACKGROUND: Because latex is a common allergen, the rate of latex sensitization may be high in the general population. A major issue would then be to determine whether a systematic preoperative screening in the general population should be recommended. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of latex sensitization in a sample of the general population and to assess the role of possible risk factors. METHODS: The subjects were 258 people, aged from 20 to 40 yr, visiting a health care centre for a check-up. The protocol included: a questionnaire (occupation, symptoms of atopy, use of latex goods and possible reactions, history of previous surgery), a skin-prick test, and a CAP RAST to latex. Atopy was evaluated by a skin-prick test to common allergens and a Phadiatop test. RESULTS: Some 6.6% of the study group had either a positive skin test or a positive RAST to latex. These subjects had a four-fold higher prevalence of symptoms when wearing gloves. The rate of latex sensitization was higher by fivefold in subjects with a history of reactions to latex goods and by fourfold in atopic subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Because the rate of latex sensitization is much higher than the anticipated rate of perioperative reactions due to latex allergy, a systematic preoperative screening for latex allergy should not be recommended for adults.     

Case reports in a two-person world.

Traditional anecdotal case reports are usually written as a 1st-person narrative, a tale told from the point of view of the treating analyst. Quotations from the patient are sometimes included, but readers rarely have access to the thoughts of either analyst or patient. Perhaps it is because of these omissions that the literature of case reports and transcribed recordings has uncovered only a few examples of persuasive interventions and has not contributed much to the understanding of what exactly brings about change in the course of psychoanalytic treatment. Perhaps the meanings readers seek are not in the published narrative but in the patient's and analyst's contexts of understanding—and these are left largely unrecorded. If ways were found to capture this context, analysts might better understand the principal ingredients of significant clinical happenings. Paediatric dentistry: coronal radiolucency. Case reports

The aim of this study was to investigate the cutting ability of the Heliosonic, Rispisonic, and Shaper files supplied with the MM 1500 sonic handpiece. A model system was used and the following variables evaluated; file type (Heliosonic, Rispisonic or Shaper), power (air inlet ring opening of half, three quarters or fully open), width (15, 25 or 35), and load (25, 50 or 100 grams). A 3(4) full factorial analysis with two replications was performed. A new file with water irrigation was used for each cut. The substrate used was 1 mm thick sections of bovine bone. The differences between the variables were significant (ANOVA, p < 0.001). The most significant variable to affect cutting was load, followed by file type, power, and width. It is suggested that operators should select the file type for use appropriately and press the file against the root canal wall for optimum cutting.     

Two cases of benign vaginal rhabdomyoma. Case reports

Two cases of benign vaginal rhabdomyoma, which occurred in women aged 38 and 54 years, are reported. The macroscopic and microscopic appearance is described. The literature on this rare tumour is reviewed and the differential diagnoses are discussed. Local excision is considered adequate treatment.     

Assessment of employees with mental health disabilities for workplace accommodations: Case reports.

Psychologists who work with employers are increasingly being asked to play a role in developing accommodations for workers with mental health disabilities that conform to the provisions of the Americans With Disabilities Act (1992). Using 6 representative cases referred for accommodation evaluation at a federal agency, this article examines the common practical problems that arise when attempting to implement reasonable accommodations in an organizational work setting. It concludes that maintaining good communication among employees, employers, case managers, and outside treatment providers increases the likelihood of a successful outcome. The article also outlines procedures for conducting workplace accommodation evaluations and suggests strategies to consider when providing this type of consultation. Indications for psychotherapy

Measurements of urease activity of various cell fractions of U. urealyticum showed that this activity was confined to the soluble fraction of the cytoplasm. It was attempted to devise a method for electron microscopic detection of the sites of urease activity based on precipitation of electron dense MnO2 at the alkaline pH created by hydrolysis of urea. The results obtained by this method supported the previous results indicating a cytoplasmatic localization of the urease activity in the cells. Helical ribosome patterns were observed when glutaraldehyde fixed cells were treated with the cytochemical test solutions.

Indications for conjunctival transplantation

Long-term follow-up (two to five years) of 12 unilateral chemical burn patients treated by conjunctival transplantation shows permanent stabilization of the ocular surface. The procedure was used in another group of five patients with unilateral recalcitrant epithelial defects. Regardless of the etiology of the epithelial defect, prompt healing of the surface occurs after conjunctival transplantation with no further stromal loss and long-term stabilization of the surface. Such results suggest that epithelial replacement may be a valuable therapeutic approach to a variety of ocular surface disorders.
