A novel gas–liquid two‐phase flow metering method was proposed. A spiral vane mounted in the inner pipe was used to transform inlet flow patterns into gas–liquid swirling annular flow. The thickness and velocity profile of liquid film were measured by ultrasound Doppler velocimetry. The liquid flow rates were obtained by integrating of velocity profile during the liquid film zone. Experiments were carried out in an air–water two‐phase flow loop and an ultrasonic transducer was installed under the bottom of the test section with the Doppler angle of 70°. The flow patterns included stratified wavy, annular, and slug flows. Compared with non‐swirling flow, the liquid film thickness at the bottom reduces greatly. The measurement accuracy of liquid flow rate was independent of inlet flow patterns, gas and liquid velocities. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 2348–2357, 2017  相似文献

Hydrodynamics of gas–liquid two‐phase flow in micropacked beds are studied with a new experimental setup. The pressure drop, residence time distribution, and liquid holdup are measured with gas and liquid flow rates varying from 4 to 14 sccm and 0.1 to 1 mL/min, respectively. Key parameters are identified to control the experimentally observed hydrodynamics, including transient start‐up procedure, gas and liquid superficial velocities, particle and packed bed diameters, and physical properties of the liquids. Contrary to conventional large packed beds, our results demonstrate that in these microsystems, capillary forces have a large effect on pressure drop and liquid holdup, while gravity can be neglected. A mathematical model describes the hydrodynamics in the micropacked beds by considering the contribution of capillary forces, and its predictions are in good agreement with experimental data. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 4694–4704, 2017  相似文献

The two‐phase flow following the blowdown of pipeline carrying flashing liquid is numerically investigated by using thermodynamic equilibrium and non‐equilibrium models. Model equations are solved numerically by the finite volume method. The values of fluxes at cell boundaries are obtained by AUSM+‐up. To obtain proper values for the coefficients of dissipation, both single phase liquid and two phase shock tube problems are investigated. The transient release from the pressurized pipeline is studied for two cases of long and short pipes. Comparison of the predictions against experimental data reveals non‐equilibrium model performs a little better than equilibrium model in the prediction of temporal variations of pressure and void fraction of the long pipe. However, equilibrium model totally overestimates pressure and void fraction of the short pipe. The relative error of equilibrium model in the prediction of pressure variation with time exceeds 50% and it is 20% for non‐equilibrium model. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 3214–3223, 2017  相似文献

The effect of tube diameter on two‐phase flow patterns was investigated in circular tubes with inner diameters of 0.6, 1.2, 1.7, 2.6, and 3.4 mm using air and water. The gas and liquid superficial velocity ranges were 0.01–50 and 0.01–3 m/s, respectively. The gas and liquid flow rates were measured and the two‐phase flow pattern images were recorded using high‐speed CMOS camera. The flow patterns observed were dispersed bubbly, bubbly, slug, slug‐annular, wavy‐annular, stratified, and annular flows. These flow patterns were not observed in all the test diameters, but were found to be unique to particular tube diameters, confirming the effect of tube diameter on the flow pattern. The data obtained were compared to existing experimental data and flow regime transition maps which show generally reasonable overall agreement at the larger diameters, but significant differences were observed with the smaller diameter tubes.  相似文献

The present report studies on the flow pattern transitions during vertical air water downflow through millichannels (0.83 ≤ Eötvös no. ≤ 20.63). Four basic flow patterns namely falling film flow, slug flow, bubbly flow, and annular flow are observed in the range of experimental conditions studied and their range of existence has been noted to vary with tube diameter and phase velocities. Based on experimental observations, phenomenological models are proposed to predict the transition boundaries between adjacent patterns. These have been validated with experimental flow pattern maps from the present experiments. Thus the study formalizes procedure for developing a generalized flow pattern map for gas‐liquid downflow in narrow tubes. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 792–800, 2017  相似文献

A new model is proposed to predict minimum flow rates required to constantly move particles in both intermittent and stratified flow regimes. The new model consists of a single‐phase flow model along with an appropriate length scale to be extended to multiphase flow regime. A comparison of the new model with experimental data in a multiphase air–water flow shows that the new model is able to predict minimum flow rates well for a wide range of operating conditions. The new model can capture the effects of particle size, particle concentration, and pipe size as confirmed by experimental data. A comparison of the new model with previously proposed models in the literature shows that the new model improves critical velocity predictions significantly. Moreover, the new model is the only model that takes into account the effect of particle concentration and can predict critical velocity in both intermittent and stratified flow regimes. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 2634–2646, 2015  相似文献

Experimental Observations on average pulse velocity and frequency in concurrent gas‐liquid (down) flow through randomly packed beds are used to extract constitutive relations for the gas‐liquid interaction and mean curvature terms that appear in a recently proposed volume‐averaged two‐fluid model for bubbly flow. The proposed closures lead to a reasonably quantitative prediction of the average pressure drop and liquid saturation under bubbly flow conditions and in the near pulse regime. In addition, the proposed closures provide realistic estimates for the location of the bubble‐to‐pulse transition in microgravity and in 1g down‐flow and predict the disappearance of the bubbly flow pattern at low liquid fluxes in 1g down‐flow. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 812–822, 2017  相似文献

In this work, an experimental study was made on gas injection into an oil‐water flow in horizontal pipes with two unequal pipe diameters. Special attention was given to the influence of gas injection on the average in‐situ oil fraction. Measurements were made for input water flow rates of 1.25–5 m3/h, input oil flow rates of 0–8 m3/h and input gas flow rates of 0–9 m3/h. It was found that gas injection has a considerable influence on the in‐situ oil fraction. In general, a small increase in the rate of air injection leads to greatly decreasing in‐situ oil fractions. The in‐situ oil fraction with gas injection decreases to a greater extent than that without gas injection, at the same input liquid flow rates. At a given input water flow rate, the value of the in‐situ oil fraction in the pipe with the larger diameter is higher than that in the pipe with the smaller diameter. Furthermore, the drift flux models were extended to predict the average in‐situ fractions of the oil phase in the intermittent three‐phase flow regimes. A good agreement is obtained between theory and data, especially for the in‐situ oil fraction range of 0.2–1.0.  相似文献

Wax deposition modeling is complicated under oil/gas two‐phase pipe flow and therefore remains poorly understood. One‐dimensional empirical heat and mass transfer correlations are unreliably for deposition modeling in stratified flow, due to non‐uniform deposit across the pipe circumference. A mathematical model has been developed to predict the deposit thickness and the wax fraction of deposit in oil/gas stratified pipe flow using a unidirectional flow analysis of non‐isothermal hydrodynamics and heat/mass transfer. The predictions for wax deposition are found to compare satisfactorily with experimental data with three different oils for single phase and oil/gas stratified pipe flow. In particular, the reason that the deposit forming a crescent shape at the cross section of pipe observed in different experiments is revealed, based on the non‐uniform circumferential distributions of two most important parameters for the wax deposition, diffusivity at oil–deposit interface, and the solubility gradient at the oil–deposit interface at different time. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 2550–2562, 2016  相似文献

An accurate prediction of gas–liquid interfacial area is very important for the design and optimization of column trays. However, the difference of the gas–liquid flow regimes operating at different scale trays significantly affect the interfacial area calculation. Therefore, in this study, an interfacial area model operating at small column was established using the Kolmogorov's isotropic turbulence hypothesis. According to the analyzes of the gas–liquid flow phenomena of different scale columns, an assumption that the similarity principle of flow characteristics of gas–liquid in full contact was proposed. Moreover, a new model that can be used to predict the gas–liquid interfacial area of a large column with exiting the nonideal flow was obtained through the extension of the small tray interfacial area model based on this principle. Finally, the new model was tested by comparisons with the experimental results of references. The prediction accuracy significantly improved with the maximum deviation of approximately 40%. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 905–915, 2016  相似文献

Three‐dimensional (3‐D) gas‐liquid–solid flow and mixing behaviors in microchannels were simulated by coupled volume of fluid and discrete phase method and simulations were validated against observations. The detachment time and length of gas slug are shortened in liquid–solid flow, compared with those in liquid flow due to higher superficial viscosity of liquid–solid mixture, which will move the bubble formation toward the dripping regime. Solid particles mainly distribute in liquid slug and particle flow shows obvious periodicity. With the increase of contact angle of the inner wall, gas slug (0–50°), stratified (77–120°), and liquid drop (160°) flows are observed. The residence time distributions of solid and liquid phases are similar because particles behave as tracers. The backmixing of solid and liquid phases in liquid drop flow is the weakest among the three flow patterns, and the backmixing of gas phase in slug flow is weaker than that in both stratified and liquid drop flows. The results can provide a theoretical basis for the design of microreactors. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 1934–1951, 2013  相似文献

Using air and water as the working fluids, phase separation phenomena for stratified and plug flows at inlet were investigated experimentally, at a simple T‐junction and specifically designed multitube T‐junction separators with two or three layers. The results show that for these two flow patterns the separation efficiency of the two phases for any multitube T‐junction separator is much higher than that of the simple T‐junction. Increasing the number of connecting tubes in the multitube T‐junction separator can increase the separation efficiency. Generally, for stratified flow, complete separation of the two phases can be achieved by the two‐layer multitube T‐junction separator with five or more connecting tubes and by the three‐layer separator; increasing the gas flow rate, the liquid flow rate, or the mixture velocity under plug flow is detrimental to phase separation with a drop in peak separation efficiency. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 2285–2292, 2017  相似文献

Stratified liquid/gas flow was experimentally investigated in a horizontal or slightly inclined circular pipe. The polarographic method was used to determine the liquid-wall shear stress. Both the liquid fraction and pressure gradient were also measured. Sixteen wall electrodes were positioned around the tube perimeter. Local liquid-wall shear stress profiles are presented for horizontal and near-horizontal flows. The averaged values are compared with the results obtained from a stratified flow model and models using the experimental data of liquid fraction and pressure drop. New experimental data for air–water flow in a horizontal square cross‐section channel (H = 24.25 mm) is presented, including data on liquid hold‐up, gas and liquid velocities, and wave velocities and frequencies. For the majority of gas and liquid flow rates studied, the regime observed was pseudo‐slug. Using visualization studies it was possible to identify wavy‐stratified and pseudo‐slug flows. For the pseudo‐slug regime new correlations were obtained for liquid hold‐up, for gas and liquid velocities as a function of the ratio between gas and liquid mass flow rates, and for the frequency of roll‐waves as a function of gas and liquid mass flow rates.  相似文献

This article reports on the influence of elevated pressure and catalyst particle lyophobicity at particle concentrations up to 3 vol % on the hydrodynamics and the gas‐to‐liquid mass transfer in a slurry bubble column. The study was done with demineralized water (aqueous phase) and Isopar‐M oil (organic phase) slurries in a 0.15 m internal diameter bubble column operated at pressures ranging from 0.1 to 1.3 MPa. The overall gas hold‐up, the flow regime transition point, the average large bubble diameter, and the centerline liquid velocity were measured along with the gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient. The gas hold‐up and the flow regime transition point are not influenced by the presence of lyophilic particles. Lyophobic particles shift the regime transition to a higher gas velocity and cause foam formation. Increasing operating pressure significantly increases the gas hold‐up and the regime transition velocity, irrespective of the particle lyophobicity. The gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient is proportional to the gas hold‐up for all investigated slurries and is not affected by the particle lyophobicity, the particle concentration, and the operating pressure. A correlation is presented to estimate the gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient as a function of the measured gas hold‐up: $k_{\rm l}a_{\rm l}/\varepsilon_{\rm g} = 3.0 \sqrt{Du_{\rm b}/d_{\rm b}^3}\;{\rm s}^{-1}$ . © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010  相似文献

Simulations of a gas–liquid stirred reactor including bubble breakage and coalescence were performed. The filtered conservation equations for the liquid phase were discretized using a lattice‐Boltzmann scheme. A Lagrangian approach with a bubble parcel concept was used for the dispersed gas phase. Bubble breakage and coalescence were modeled as stochastic events. Additional assumptions for bubble breakup modeling in an Euler–Lagrange framework were proposed. The action of the reactor components on the liquid flow field was described using an immersed boundary condition. The predicted number‐based mean diameter and long‐term averaged liquid velocity components agree qualitatively and quantitatively well with experimental data for a laboratory‐scale gas–liquid stirred reactor with dilute dispersion. Effects of the presence of bubbles, as well as the increase in the gas flow rate, on the hydrodynamics were numerically studied. The modeling technique offers an alternative engineering tool to gain detailed insights into complex industrial‐scale gas–liquid stirred reactors. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2012  相似文献

In this article, flow pattern of liquid film and flooding phenomena of a falling film microreactor (FFMR) were investigated using high‐speed CCD camera. Three flow regimes were identified as “corner rivulet flow,” “falling film flow with dry patches,” and “complete falling film flow” when liquid flow rate increased gradually. Besides liquid film flow in microchannels, a flooding presented as the flow of liquid along the side wall of gas chamber in FFMR was found at high liquid flow rate. Moreover, the flooding could be initiated at lower flow rate with the reduction of the depth of the gas chamber. CO2 absorption was then investigated under the complete falling flow regime in FFMR, where the effects of liquid viscosity and surface tension on mass transfer were demonstrated. The experimental results indicate that kL is in the range of 5.83 to 13.4 × 10?5 m s?1 and an empirical correlation was proposed to predict kL in FFMR. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2009  相似文献

A flow pattern‐independent void fraction correlation for gas‐liquid two‐phase flow in vertical large‐diameter annuli is established. Two equations are proposed for the parameters of a drift flux model‐based correlation: the distribution parameter and the drift flux velocity. These equations are expressed as a function of two‐phase flow variables including void fraction, fluid properties, pipe geometry, and phase flow rates. Experiments were performed to study the void fraction of vertical air‐water two‐phase flow in large‐diameter annuli. The obtained experimental data along with the literature data of Caetano are used to verify the performance of the proposed void fraction correlation. The accuracy of this correlation is compared with nineteen frequently used correlations in literature. The proposed correlation was found to predict the void fraction consistently with a better accuracy.  相似文献

Two‐phase hydrodynamics has been experimentally investigated using optical fibre probes in individual channels of a laboratory scale monolith bed. Experimental investigations were carried out to validate the optical probe measurements in a single capillary. Optical probes were positioned at selected single channels of a monolith block, and the signals were processed to assess the local hydrodynamics under cocurrent gas‐liquid downflow configuration, using air and water as fluids. The investigations were performed for three different distributors, viz. single pipe, multipipe, and packed bed distributor configurations. The different distributor configurations were evaluated on the basis of void fraction and bubble frequency for a wide range of flow velocities. The specific novelty aspect of this study comes from the fact that we have undertaken channel scale investigations in monoliths under conditions where we have also reported the global gas‐liquid distribution. Thus, one can readily correlate the bed‐scale hydrodynamics with the local channel‐scale hydrodynamics. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 327–336, 2017  相似文献
