Decision support for manufacturing management

Historically, information systems have been used to improve efficiency through such means as clerical automation, inventory status reporting and transactional processing systems. Today, however, to reduce costs, increase return on investments, and achieve competitive advantage, businesses need to have information systems that support managerial decision-making and result in improved effectiveness. To meet this requirement, new approaches are needed in order to define the right problem and work the problem right. By using such techniques as critical success factor analysis followed by a top down system development approach, developing systems through prototyping and using end-user oriented software, these needs can be met.This article describes several company experiences of using a management systems planning and development process. This process in one company presented an opportunity to test the feasibility of developing an alignment between business goals and events critical to the success of the business. Management believed that to succeed in the future they must be forward thinking in their identification and use of information systems to improve managerial effectiveness. Their questions were “What should we do?” and “How should we do it?” By applying these techniques they were able to achieve outstanding results in a very short period of time.     

A Brazilian experience: 40 years using operations research at Petrobras

Petrobras was created as an integrated company to operate in oil and oil byproduct exploration, production, refining, marketing, and transportation. Petrobras is now the biggest Brazilian company, operating in a number of areas in the energy sector and currently present in 27 countries. This article describes the evolution of the activities and the achievements of its Operations Research group, created in the 1960s, and its work offering decision support to the most diverse segments of the company.     

Model-Based Business Process Mining

As companies use enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to support their business processes, they need to verify that the systems are configured appropriately and used in the most efficient way. This article describes the approach taken and results from a business process mining project at a midsized company in Norway. A newly released tool for analyzing ERP system logs is used to construct the underlying business flows and to provide new insights that can be used by the company to improve the procurement process.

This article focuses on the birth of the IBM France company in 1914; the proposal its directors made to buy out Bull, its main competitor; the second world war and the obstacles the company had to surmount. It also describes the opening of a scientific computing center, the arrival of the IBM 650, and the creation of the military applications department. MAG-EX: A magnetics fabrication expert systems focusing expert systems technology on improving quality control

This paper describes the development and experiences involved with creating a prototype application for the use of expert systems technology in manufacturing, specifically in quality control. The company described in the paper is an electronics manufacturer specializing in power supplies and amplifiers for military and commercial applications. It currently relies heavily on traditional manufacturing information systems technology. Quality control must meet DoD and other regulations and directly affects the bottom-line. As a potential expert system project, management felt as though product quality and the company as a whole could benefit from strategic development in Quality Assurance. The paper discusses the process, the difficulties, and the derived benefits to quality control from the development of an expert system application. Further, the paper reports on additional training benefits derived from the explanation capability of the expert system.     

Improving Information Quality Through it Alignment Planning: A Case Study

This article describes how a medium-sized, Midwestern power company implemented an IT alignment planning process. the IT alignment planning process was a successful four-year activity that involved, first, a pilot implementation and then a companywide implementation of the IT alignment planning process. Designed to be flexible and to dovetail with corporate strategic planning processes, IT alignment planning achieved acknowledgment and approval in all divisions of the company. the IT alignment planning process improved and facilitated communication on IT and IT projects throughout the company, from the executive level to the operational level, and brought the IT and client units closer together.

Integration von Daten, Anwendungen und Prozessen am Beispiel des Telekommunikationsunternehmens EWE TEL

The necessary specialisation in information processing in the telecommunication sector led to a wide range of software systems in the relevant software market. This can be traced back by the fact that there is a lack of capable and integrated solutions. If a telecommunication company comes to the decision to use specialised software systems, it has to face the sophisticated challenge of systems integration. This can be done at least at the levels of data, applications and processes. Illustrated by examples from the heterogeneous system environment at the telecommunication company EWE TEL, concepts for system integration and gained experiences are presented in this article. The following aspects are discussed in detail: integration of data by means of middleware, integration of applications using application server technology, and integration of processes by employing workflow management systems.
