A better understanding of wastewater treatment with soil filters is important to optimise plant operation and reduce the risk of clogging. The article presents results of a treatment concept which uses a combination of SBR and vertical-flow sand filter technology. The SBR was mainly used for denitrification and sedimentation of substances in particulate form. Efficient nitrification was achieved by the planted sand filter. Degradation rates of 10gNH(4)-N/(m(2)xd) were measured for periods with peak loadings. The two-dimensional dynamic model reproduces the biofilm growth and decay of heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass. It is capable of describing the clogging of the sand filter by combining a biochemical and a geometric model. After calibration, the model was used for the calculation of maximum nitrogen degradation performances. Maximum degradation rates of 12gNH(4)-N/(m(2)xd) can be achieved if the COD/TKN ratio is reduced before to a level lower than that of municipal wastewater. The COD was further degraded in the filter than we expected comparing it with activated sludge plants. Within the soil filter a biofilm thickness of up to 110mum is simulated depending on the embankment of gravel and grains of sand. Sensitivity analysis of model parameters showed the high impact of the maximum autotrophic growth rate, the autotrophic yield, the diffusion coefficient for oxygen and the number of contact points of the single grains of sand.  相似文献

Septic tank systems are an important source of NO3(-) to many aquifers, yet characterization of N mass balance and isotope systematics following septic tank effluent discharge into unsaturated sediments has received limited attention. In this study, samples of septic tank effluent before and after transport through single-pass packed-bed filters (sand filters) were evaluated to elucidate mass balance and isotope effects associated with septic tank effluent discharge to unsaturated sediments. Chemical and isotopic data from five newly installed pairs and ten established pairs of septic tanks and packed-bed filters serving single homes in Oregon indicate that aqueous solute concentrations are affected by variations in recharge (precipitation, evapotranspiration), NH4+ sorption (primarily in immature systems), nitrification, and gaseous N loss via NH3 volatilization and(or) N2 or N2O release during nitrification/denitrification. Substantial NH4+ sorption capacity was also observed in laboratory columns with synthetic effluent. Septic tank effluent delta15N-NH4+ values were almost constant and averaged +4.9 per thousand+/-0.4 per thousand (1 sigma). In contrast, delta15N values of NO3(-) leaving mature packed-bed filters were variable (+0.8 to +14.4 per thousand) and averaged +7.2 per thousand+/-2.6 per thousand. Net N loss in the two networks of packed-bed filters was indicated by average 10-30% decreases in Cl(-)-normalized N concentrations and 2-3 per thousand increases in delta15N, consistent with fractionation accompanying gaseous N losses and corroborating established links between septic tank effluent and NO3(-) in a local, shallow aquifer. Values of delta18O-NO3(-) leaving mature packed-bed filters ranged from -10.2 to -2.3 per thousand (mean -6.4 per thousand+/-1.8 per thousand), and were intermediate between a 2/3 H2O-O+1/3 O2-O conceptualization and a 100% H2O-O conceptualization of delta18O-NO3(-) generation during nitrification.  相似文献

The increasing amount of nanoparticles with the development of nanotechnology gives rise to concerns about potential negative impact on the environment and health hazards posed to humans. Membrane filter is an effective media to control nanoparticles. Three filters coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane were investigated in this study. A series of experiments on the filter efficiency and relevant parameters such as the particle size and face velocity were carried out. The data show that the efficiency curves for the membrane filters demonstrate the typical shape of “v” for particle sizes from 10 to 300 nm at face velocities from 0.3 to 15 cm/s. Membrane filters with larger pore sizes have larger Most Penetrating Particles Sizes (MPPS), and the MPPS decreases with increasing face velocity. The efficiencies decrease with increasing face velocity for particle sizes from 10 to 300 nm. We present the filtration efficiency data as a novel three-dimensional graph to illustrate its dependence on the particle size and face velocity. The membrane coated filter can be considered as two combined layers, one fibrous layer and one membrane layer. We develop a new filtration efficiency model which is a combination of the models for the two layers. Results from the model calculation agree with experimental data well. The study can help to optimize the filter product and to determine the operational parameters of filters, thus contributing to reduction of air pollution by rapidly emerging nanoparticles.  相似文献

Drinking water biofilm formation on polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) was followed in three different reactors operating under stagnant or continuous flow regimes. After one week, a quasi-steady state was achieved where biofilm total cell numbers per unit surface area were not affected by fluctuations in the concentration of suspended cells. Metabolically active cells in biofilms were around 17-35% of the total cells and 6-18% were able to form colony units in R(2)A medium. Microbiological analysis showed that the adhesion material and reactor design did not affect significantly the biofilm growth. However, operating under continuous flow (0.8-1.9 Pa) or stagnant water had a significant effect on biofilm formation: in stagnant waters, biofilm grew to a less extent. By applying mass balances and an asymptotic biofilm formation model to data from biofilms grown on PVC and HDPE surfaces under turbulent flow, specific growth rates of bacteria in the biofilm were found to be similar for both materials (around 0.15 day(-1)) and much lower than the specific growth rates of suspended bacteria (around 1.8 day(-1)).  相似文献

We studied the changes in water quality and formation of biofilms occurring in a pilot-scale water distribution system with two generally used pipe materials: copper and plastic (polyethylene, PE). The formation of biofilms with time was analysed as the number of total bacteria, heterotrophic plate counts and the concentration of ATP in biofilms. At the end of the experiment (after 308 days), microbial community structure, viable biomass and gram-negative bacterial biomass were analysed via lipid biomarkers (phospholipid fatty acids and lipopolysaccharide 3-hydroxy fatty acids), and the numbers of virus-like particles and total bacteria were enumerated by SYBR Green I staining. The formation of biofilm was slower in copper pipes than in the PE pipes, but after 200 days there was no difference in microbial numbers between the pipe materials. Copper ion led to lower microbial numbers in water during the first 200 days, but thereafter there were no differences between the two pipe materials. The number of virus-like particles was lower in biofilms and in outlet water from the copper pipes than PE pipes. Pipe material influenced also the microbial and gram-negative bacterial community structure in biofilms and water.  相似文献

Control of biofouling and its negative effects on process performance of water systems is a serious operational challenge in all of the water sectors. Molecularly capped silver nanoparticles (Ag-MCNPs) were used as a pretreatment strategy for controlling biofilm development in aqueous suspensions using the model organism Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Biofilm control was tested in a two-step procedure: planktonic P. aeruginosa was exposed to the Ag-MCNPs and then the adherent biofilm formed by the surviving cells was monitored by applying a model biofilm-formation assay. Under specific conditions, Ag-MCNPs retarded biofilm formation, even when high percentage of planktonic P. aeruginosa cells survived the treatment. For example, Ag-MCNPs (10 μg mL−1) retarded biofilm formation (>60%), when 50 percent of the planktonic P. aeruginosa cells survived the treatment. Moreover, stable low value of relative biomass has been formed in the presence of fixed Ag-MCNPs concentrations at various biofilm incubation times. Our results showed that Ag-MCNPs pretreated cells were able to produce EPS although they succeeded to form relatively low adherent biofilm. These pretreated cells appear well preserved and undamaged under TEM HPH/freeze micrographs, yet the intra cellular material seems to be pushed towards the peripheral parts of the cell, possibly indicating a survival strategy to the presence of Ag-MCNPs. The lower value of relative biomass formed in the presence of Ag-MCNPs could be associated with molecular mechanisms related to biofilm formation or continuous release of silver ions in the sample. However, further research is required to examine these factors.  相似文献

In full-scale drinking water production from groundwater, subsurface aeration is an effective means of enhancing the often troublesome process of nitrification. Until now the exact mechanism, however, has been unknown. By studying the microbial population we can improve the understanding of this process. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments of bacteria, archaea and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was used to characterize the microbial populations in raw groundwater and trickling filters of an active nitrifying surface aerated system and an inactive non-surface aerated system. Only in the active filter were nitrifying microorganisms found above the detection limit of the method. In ammonia oxidation in this groundwater filter both bacteria and archaea played a role, while members belonging to the genus Nitrospira were the only nitrite-oxidizing species found. The subsurface aerated groundwater did not contain any of the nitrifying organisms active in the filter above the detection limit, but did contain Gallionella species that might play a major role in iron oxidation in the filter.  相似文献

Filtration of drinking water by point-of-use (POU) or point-of-entry (POE) systems is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Drinking water is filtered to remove both organic and inorganic contaminants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of granular activated carbon from nutshells (almond, English walnut, pecan) in a POU water filtration system to determine its effectiveness in removing select, potentially toxic metal ions, namely, copper (Cu2+), lead (Pb2+) or zinc (Zn2+) found in drinking water. The nutshell-based carbon system was designated "Envirofilter" and was compared to four commercial POU systems with brand names of BRITA, Omni Filter, PUR and Teledyne Water Pik. Eight prototype "Envirofilters", consisting of individual or binary mixtures of carbons made from acid-activated almond or pecan shells and steam-activated pecan or walnut shells were constructed and evaluated for adsorption of the three metal ions. The results indicated that a binary mixture of carbons from acid-activated almond and either steam-activated pecan or walnut shells were the most effective in removing these metals from drinking water of all the POU systems evaluated. Binary mixtures of acid-activated almond shell-based carbon with either steam-activated pecan shell- or walnut shell-based carbon removed nearly 100% of lead ion, 90-95% of copper ion and 80-90% of zinc ion. Overall the performance data on the "Envirofilters" suggest that these prototypes require less carbon than commercial filters to achieve the same metal adsorption efficiency and may also be a less expensive product.  相似文献

The growing use of nanosized titanium dioxide (nTiO2) and zinc oxide (nZnO) in a large number of commercial products raises concerns regarding their release and subsequent mobility in natural aquatic environments. Laboratory-scale sand-packed column experiments were conducted with bare and polymer-coated nTiO2 and nZnO to improve our understanding of the mobility of these nanoparticles in natural or engineered water saturated granular systems. The nanoparticles are characterized over a range of environmentally relevant water chemistries using multiple complimentary techniques: dynamic light scattering, nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Overall, bare (uncoated) nanoparticles exhibit high retention within the water saturated granular matrix at solution ionic strengths (IS) as low as 0.1 mM NaNO3 for bare nTiO2 and 0.01 mM NaNO3 for bare nZnO. Bare nTiO2 and nZnO also display dynamic (time-dependent) deposition behaviors under selected conditions. In contrast, the polymer-coated nanoparticles are much less likely to aggregate and exhibit significant transport potential at IS as high as 100 mM NaNO3 or 3 mM CaCl2. These findings illustrate the importance of considering the extent and type of surface modification when evaluating metal oxide contamination potential in granular aquatic environments.  相似文献

Spent filter backwash water (SFBW) and clarifier sludge generally comprise the majority of the waste residual volume generated and in relative terms, these can be collectively referred to as combined filter backwash water (CFBW). CFBW is essentially a low-solids wastewater with metal hydroxide flocs that are typically light and slow to settle. This study evaluates the impact of adding calcium and magnesium carbonates to CFBW in terms of assessing the impacts on the sedimentation and DAF separation processes. Representative CFBW samples were collected from two surface water treatment plants (WTP): Lake Major WTP (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) and Victoria Park WTP (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada). Bench-scale results indicated that improvements in the CFBW settled water quality could be achieved through the addition of the divalent cations, thereby adjusting the monovalent to divalent (M:D) ratios of the wastewater. In general, the DAF process required slightly higher M:D ratios than the sedimentation process. The optimum M:D ratios for DAF and sedimentation were determined to be 1:1 and 0.33:1, respectively. It was concluded that the optimisation of the cation balance between monovalent cations (e.g., Na(+), K(+)) and added divalent cations (i.e., Ca(2+), Mg(2+)) aided in the settling mechanism through charge neutralisation-precipitation. The increase in divalent cation concentrations within the waste residual stream promoted destabilisation of the negatively charged colour molecules within the CFBW, thereby causing the colloidal content to become more hydrophobic.  相似文献
