Web content nowadays can also be accessed through new generation of Internet connected TVs. However, these products failed to change users’ behavior when consuming online content. Users still prefer personal computers to access Web content. Certainly, most of the online content is still designed to be accessed by personal computers or mobile devices. In order to overcome the usability problem of Web content consumption on TVs, this paper presents a knowledge graph based video generation system that automatically converts textual Web content into videos using semantic Web and computer graphics based technologies. As a use case, Wikipedia articles are automatically converted into videos. The effectiveness of the proposed system is validated empirically via opinion surveys. Fifty percent of survey users indicated that they found generated videos enjoyable and 42 % of them indicated that they would like to use our system to consume Web content on their TVs.

A blog (shortened from ‘weblog’) is a trendy way to share personal journal with others in the cyber world. Traditionally rendering and accessing blogs are normally conducted at a stationary PC. However, such a scheme hinders blog users from writing and reading blogs timely. A short-lived idea came out and passed away suddenly. To facilitate the instant blog updating and retrieving, we combined cellular messaging (SMS/MMS messaging and MMS/WAP push) and open-source software (Blosxom and Apache) to develop a novel system for the Blog Rendering and Accessing INstantly (BRAINS). BRAINS enables blog users to note down their whims and share interests anytime and anywhere. Blog journalists can utilize their mobile phones in hand to compose and deliver blogs to BRAINS by SMS and MMS messaging at their pleasure. Through pre-registering on BRAINS, readers also can get the up-to-date blogs content or the incoming blog notification immediately by MMS push or WAP push. With pervasive networks like the GPRS, 3G, public WLAN (PWLAN) and fixed DSL networks, BRAINS makes mobile blog rendering and accessing more evident.  相似文献

Ubiquitous access to the Internet, especially from mobile phones, offers the possibility of easy access for the user to desirable contents such as songs, videos, ringtones and books. However, this easy access also exposes the owners of this content to potential fraud and piracy. Digital Rights Management technologies are used to ensure that digital content can only be consumed on authorised devices that enforce copyright protection and allow the management of content throughout its entire life cycle. The Internet, and more recently mobile phones have seen tremendous growth over the past few years. This paper examines the adoption of the Internet and WAP-enabled mobile phones in Singapore. Specifically, we compare users of WAP-enabled mobile phones and non-WAP-enabled mobile phones in terms of profile of Internet users, Internet activities and issues relating to WAP-enabled mobile phones. The results indicate that short messaging system (SMS) and caller ID are popular functions for mobile phone users. Respondent also use the mobile phone for buying cinema/concert tickets and accessing personalised news. These results provide researchers and practitioners with some insights on the adoption of the Internet and WAP-enabled mobile phones. For researchers, such insights would be useful in understanding the adoption phenomenon, while for practitioners, such insights would provide some basis for adopting certain policies to promote adoption.  相似文献

This paper surveys most of the currently available smart phones in the market. It summarizes its features and characteristics. From this study a set of must-have and desirable-to-have features for future generations of smart phones are described. The main drivers of smart phones that enable convenient and secure mobile commerce services such as electronic wallet, electronic payment, 3G broadband Internet access, and multimedia content are then described. Finally, payer-centric payment architecture is advocated to facilitate the adoption of smart phones for mobile commerce applications, in contrast to the current prevalent mode of payee-centric payment practice.  相似文献

Previously mobile industry has been unsuccessful in predicting services available on mobile phones that consumers would want to use. Short messaging service (SMS), for example, developed as a major service to the surprise of service providers. Wireless application protocol (WAP) despite heavy marketing and high hopes was not successful. The study presented examines consumer attitudes to using multimedia messaging service (MMS). An experiment is reported which tests whether people who had the opportunity to use MMS formed different perceptions of it to those who were only shown an animated PowerPoint presentation. The results demonstrated that the group who used MMS had more positive perceptions. However, the results from both groups suggest there are important barriers to overcome for use to be extensive: for example, the price of the service and of the handsets would be a disincentive and the service would need to be available to use across networks.  相似文献

In Japan, the wireless cell phone has displaced the desktop PC as the preferred Internet access tool. The rest of the world is expected to follow Japan's lead in embracing the wireless Internet. By 2003, nearly all wireless devices will be Web enabled, and i-Mode is setting the pace. i-Mode phones, with screens the size of business cards, may seem less than ideal for Internet access, but it is important to realize that the wireless Web represents a new medium that will change the way people work and play. Consumers and professionals will use mobile devices for audio-visual communications, sending and receiving email with rich media, and consulting databases with technical drawings. This paper reports ethnographically informedobservations of the use of mobile phones andtext messaging services amongst young people.It offers a sociological explanation for thepopularity of text messaging and for thesharing of mobile phones between co-proximatepersons. Specifically, it reveals that youngpeople use mobile phone content and the phonesthemselves to participate in the practices ofgift exchange. 移动计算设备如PDA、手机等具有资源少、网络速度慢的特点,因而其接收电子邮件的速度较慢。文中提出了采用E-mail接收代理来对电子邮件进行预处理的方法,首先根据移动计算设备的接收性能,设计一套适合于它的最佳接收规则,然后利用该规则来对它所需接收的电子邮件进行过滤、转换等操作,使得移动设备能够高效、正确地接收。此外,E-mail接收代理还可以提供诸如认证、防毒、杀毒和翻译等增值服务,进一步扩展它的应用范围。  相似文献

Messaging is an essential aspect of human communication and with the advance in technology and the merging technologies in telecommunications and computers, unified messaging has become very popular. Products that can unify email, voice mail and facsimile are reaching the market. These products will allow users to save time and money and provide them with an efficient way to manage different forms of information. This paper proposes a unified messaging system, UniMail, which is hosted on a PC platform. Access by client is primarily via the web browser with alternative access to voice messages, emails and fax messages by the telephone. A comparison between UniMail and existing unified messaging solutions is also made to provide an insight into the relative strengths of this new system.  相似文献

While short messaging service (SMS) is discussed often in recent literature, multimedia messaging service (MMS), a media rich successor of SMS, is seldom heard or understood by mobile users in Taiwan. The adoption rates of MMS are far from satisfactory, implying that there might be some factors keeping the potential users away from using MMS. This research integrates a qualitative method, the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique, with the quantitative questionnaire survey to elicit and validate underlying factors which influence potential users' attitude and intention toward the adoption of MMS. A research model together with eight hypotheses was formulated, and a questionnaire based survey was administrated to mobile users knowledgeable about mobile messaging services for empirically validating the research model and testing the hypotheses. Our research findings show that relative advantage and ease of use are important factors significantly influencing mobile users' adoption of MMS but the other two antecedents, facilitating conditions and previous experience, do not have significant and direct impacts on mobile users' intention to use MMS. These study results can be referenced by service providers for designing and developing successful business applications to catch the valuable opportunity and benefit of MMS.  相似文献

An increasing number of companies are focusing on e-mail and mobile marketing to promote offers. The aim of this study is to analyze a coupon campaign for a 67 % price discount on downloadable personal computer (PC) software. The campaign was carried out via e-mail and mobile text messages. Using an opt-in database, we gathered data from more than 37,000 participants and compared the response and conversion rates for both e-mail and mobile text messaging. The results indicated that the response rate for e-mail coupons is higher than the response rate for mobile text message coupons, but text messages yield a better conversion rate and a higher number of total purchases. After calculating the price elasticities for both communication channels, we found that the promotional price elasticity is higher for mobile text message coupons than for e-mail coupons.  相似文献

Even though email is an increasingly important application, the Internet doesn't yet provide a reliable messaging infrastructure. Thus, an email message's sender can never be certain - and doesn't receive any evidence -that his or her message was actually delivered to and received by its intended recipients. Furthermore, a recipient can always deny having received a particular message, and the sender can't do much to prove the opposite. This lack of evidence for message delivery and reception is actually a missing piece in the infrastructure required for the more widespread and professional use of email. Against this background, several value-added services come to mind such as non-repudiation services and the digital analog of certified mail. Mobile phones are widely used all over the world, and with their increasing number of value-added features, they are becoming far more than a mere mobile voice communication device. Rather, they provide a powerful platform for accessing information universally. This paper reports a study which scrutinized users’ preference levels with five new mobile phone design features facilitating universal information access through mobile phones: camera, colour screen, voice-activated dialling, Internet browsing, and wireless connectivity (e.g. Bluetooth, infrared, etc.). The survey study involved college students and investigated the degree to which each of the above features impacts the users’ overall satisfaction and enhances the potential of mobile phones to contribute to different aspects of universal access. Our results show that colour screen, voice-activated dialling, and Internet browsing feature can strongly predict users’ satisfaction level, and their preference levels together account for 22.7% of the variance of the users’ overall satisfaction. Users’ satisfaction levels are significantly different between models with colour screen feature and those without, and models with Internet browsing features and those without. Since mobile phone design needs to accommodate the needs and preferences of diversified user groups, the performed study also investigated the difference in users’ preference levels of the five new features for different ethnic groups, and difference in mobile phone owned by different genders. The result indicates that Asian female users in the U.S. market have higher preference level on colour screen feature than Caucasian female users. Significantly higher percentage of male users own phones with camera, Internet browsing, and wireless connectivity features than female users. The empirical study reported in this paper provides a comprehensive picture of how new design features can enhance the mobile phone as a universal access device, and what impact they have brought about. It can also help manufacturers adopt a universal design perspective in view of the differences in preference levels of users with different ethnicity and genders.  相似文献
