A radon detector based on the electrostatic precipitation and counting of postradon decay products is described. The system was designed to perform unattended real-time measurements of ultralow radon levels in remote areas for atmospheric studies employing radioactive tracer techniques. Data are continuously stored on digital magnetic tapes or printed on a line printer.  相似文献

This paper reports and discusses the behaviour of radon concentration with time in an uninhabited dwelling. The relationship between variations in radon concentrations and indoor-outdoor temperatures and wind intensity has also been discussed. Radon concentration was measured hourly in a house located at a height of 800 m in the Lombard Prealps, at the top of the Valassina valley. The wind velocity and indoor-outdoor temperatures were measured by means of a meteorological station located on the terrace of the house. The data were analysed using the LBL model for indoor-outdoor air exchange and the models for the indoor accumulation of radon due to exhalation from building materials and pressure-driven infiltrations located underground. The role of wind and indoor-outdoor temperatures were analysed. The agreement of measurements with modelling clearly demonstrates the importance of the different sources of indoor radon. As the investigation was conducted in an uninhabited house, the measurements were not affected by the behaviour of people, e.g. opening and closing of windows. Measurements of the outdoor atmospheric concentrations of (222)Rn provide an index of the atmospheric stability, the formation of thermal inversions and convective turbulence.  相似文献

Soil gas radon measurements are carried out in a pilot study in three municipalities in Upper Austria. The selected municipalities are characterised by a high radon potential. Sixty measuring sites--well distributed over the region and over the different geological areas--were selected. Additionally, the permeability of the soil was determined where the soil gas samples were taken and at various sites where soil samples were analysed by gamma spectrometry. Long-term soil-gas radon concentration measurements are carried out at several sites to study the long-term behaviour of radon activity concentration in soil, the influence of meteorological parameters and seasonal variations. The final goal of the project is to correlate the collected data with geological data and indoor radon concentration. First results of this ongoing study are presented and discussed.  相似文献

The time variation of the radon equilibrium factor F was measured every four hours in the Nuclear Technology Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (in northern Greece) during October 1998-April 1999. The time dependence of the mean weekly value of radon equilibrium factor F is relatively small. During October 1999-May 2000 the radon equilibrium factor was measured in 25 apartments randomly distributed in Thessaloniki. The mean value of the equilibrium factor F is 0.47 +/- 0.09, close to the typical value of 0.4 adopted by UNSCEAR.  相似文献

In retrospective radon measurements, the 22-y half life of (210)Pb is used as an advantage. (210)Pb is often considered to be relatively immobile in glass after alpha recoil implanted by (222)Rn progenies. The diffusion of (210)Pb could, however, lead to uncertain wrong retrospective radon exposure estimations if (210)Pb is mobile and can escape from glass, or lost as a result of cleaning-induced surface modification. This diffusion was studied by a radiotracer technique, where (209)Pb was used as a tracer in a glass matrix for which the elemental composition is known. Using the ion guide isotope separator on-line technique, the (209)Pb atoms were implanted into the glass with an energy of 39 keV. The diffusion profiles and the diffusion coefficients were determined after annealing at 470-620 degrees C and serial sectioning by ion sputtering. In addition, the effect of surface cleaning on diffusion was tested. From the Arrhenius fit, the activation enthalpy (H) was determined, which is equal to 3.2 +/- 0.2 eV, and also the pre-exponential factor D(0), in the order of 20 m(2)s(-1). This result confirms the assumption that over a time period of 50 y (209)Pb (and (210)Pb) is effectively immobile in the glass. The boundary condition obtained from the measurements had the characteristic of a sink, implying loss of (209)Pb in the topmost surface at high temperatures.  相似文献

Detailed knowledge of radon transport mechanisms from the subsoil into the indoor environment is essential for the correct interpretation of results of short-term indoor radon measurements and for proper and effective design of radon mitigation systems. Radon transfer factor time variations have been studied based on simultaneous continuous indoor and soil gas radon measurements within the framework of complex radon diagnosis of individual buildings. In this context, the key influencing factors have been identified and analysed in order to provide satisfactory explanation on radon entry variations under different measurement conditions. Moreover, a new significant manner of radon entry into the indoor environment has been identified and will be discussed in detail.  相似文献

The results of a first phase of an indoor radon survey in a total of 1610 dwellings distributed in nine cities of the Eastern and the Western provinces of Saudi Arabia are presented. The objective of this radon survey was to obtain representative indoor radon data for seven cities in the Eastern province. Khafji, Hafr Al-Batin, Abqaiq, Qatif, Al-Ahsa, Dammam and Khobar and to compare this with two cities in the Western province, Madina and Taif. So far, detailed radon data is not available for Saudi Arabia: therefore, this radon survey provides a base line for Saudi Arabia in the Radon World Atlas. On average, 200 indoor radon dosemeters were distributed in each city and placed for a period of one year starting from May 2001 to May 2002. The total number of collected dosemeters was 847. A total of 724 houses and 98 schools were covered in this survey. The results of the survey in the cities showed that the overall minimum, maximum and average radon concentrations were 1, 137 and 22 Bq m(-3), respectively. Geometric mean and geometric standard deviations of the radon distribution were found to be 18 and 1.92, respectively. In one of the dwellings in Qatif city, radon concentration, measured by a passive system and then confirmed by an active system, was found to be 535 +/- 23 and 523 +/- 22 Bq m(-3), respectively. The result of a radon survey in 98 schools showed that the minimum, maximum and average radon concentrations were 1, 70 and 19 Bq m(-3), respectively. The average radon concentration for each city was also determined. The lowest average radon concentration (8 Bq m(-3)) was found in Al-Ahsa while the highest average concentration (40 Bq m(-3)) was found in Khafji.  相似文献

Indoor radon concentration levels were measured in seven major cities of the Bahawalpur Division, Pakistan. These included Fort Abbas, Minchin Abad, Hasilpur, Bahawalpur, Liaqatpur, Rahimyar Khan and Sadiq Abad. In order to select houses for this survey, the inhabitants were approached through their school-registered children. Due to several constraints, only those 100 houses were chosen in each city that were relatively the best representatives of the built-up area. The selected houses were then divided into live categories according to the house locations and building characteristics. CR-39 detectors, placed in polyethylene bags. were installed at head height in bedrooms and sitting rooms of all the selected houses and were exposed to radon and its daughter products for 90 days. Four such measurements were performed over a year in order to average out the seasonal variation in radon levels. After exposure, all the detectors were etched and counted under an optical microscope. The track densities of four measurements were averaged out and related to radon concentration levels. The radon levels were found to be 20, 20, 26, 28, 34, 42, 47 Bq m(-3) in the bedrooms and 24, 26, 27, 26, 37, 40, 43 Bq m(-3) in sitting rooms of Hasilpur, Rahimyar Khan, Minchin Abad, Fort Abbas, Sadiq Abad, Bahawalpur and Liaqatpur respectively. The observed variation in the radon level may be attributed to the geological variation in the area. Based on the observed data, excess lung cancer risk was assessed using the risk factors recommended by the USEPA, UNSCEAR and the ICRP. According to the EPA model, the lifetime excess lung cancer risk due to the lifetime exposure is found to vary from 12-102 per million per year in the houses surveyed. This variation is from 16-114 and 26-62 per million per year if UNSCEAR and ICRP limits are applied respectively.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to obtain a pattern of 222Rn concentration distributions in typical buildings in Poland. In the investigations, the environmental passive detectors of the PICO-RAD type were used. The study encompassed buildings that were typical for Poland. The distribution of airborne 222Rn concentrations indoors is of a log-normal type. A total 1171 detectors were measured. Measurements were made in 319 basements, the remaining 852 measurements were carried out in the inhabited part of the houses. The radon concentrations in the basements in Bq x m(-3) ranged from 6 to 1300 with the arithmetic mean AM = 60, geometric mean GM = 30 and median M = 28, whereas those in the inhabited parts of the house (above the ground level) were: AM = 25, GM = 17 and M = 16 with the highest record value of 420.  相似文献

Indoor radon levels in 20 dwellings of rural areas at the Kozak-Bergama (Pergamon) granodiorite area in Turkey were measured by the alpha track etch integrated method. These dwellings were monitored for eight successive months. Results show that the radon levels varied widely in the area ranging from 11±1 to 727±11 Bq m(-3) and the geometric mean was found to be 63 Bq m(-3) with a geometric standard deviation of 2 Bq m(-3). A log-normal distribution of the radon concentration was obtained for the studied area. Estimated annual effective doses due to the indoor radon ranged from 0.27 to 18.34 mSv y(-1) with a mean value of 1.95 mSv y(-1), which is lower than the effective dose values 3-10 mSv given as the range of action levels recommended by International Commission on Radiation Protection. All dosimetric calculations were performed based on the guidance of the UNSCEAR 2000 report.  相似文献

The national and international radioprotection legislation now covers exposures to the naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) with particular emphasis on radon in workplaces. Consequently, a number of working environments have now been brought into the realm of radiation protection monitoring with a corresponding increase in the demand for radon monitoring services. The new challenges occasioned by the increase in demands are illustrated in this paper together with the radon measurement system developed at the ENEA IRP radon Service. In particular, this paper emphasises how to control using hardware and software analysis, the distributions (diameters and areas) of the track shape, which directly affect the quality of the radon service.  相似文献

This paper presents a statistical model for estimating probability, which states that a quality of radon measurements using the electret ion chamber system RM-1 will be accurate. The quality of the electret measurement was modelled as a ratio between the reference radon concentration and values measured under real conditions with varied levels of indoor radon concentration and microclimate indoor conditions. It was stated that the accuracy tolerance of measured values is 20 % of the given reference value. To estimate the uncertainty of the statistical model, the exact confidence limits for the estimated probabilities are computed. The statistical model was confirmed by an independent set of measurements. Moreover, the effect of absolute humidity on the quality estimation of electret detectors are also statistically analysed and discussed. The results of the statistical model confirm that the electret system is robust and suitable for estimation of radon concentration.  相似文献

To evaluate the uncertainties for nuclear track detectors used in radon measurements, a full understanding is required of the physical phenomena involved and the behaviour of the instruments utilised in the measuring process. As it concerns the LR115 nuclear track detector, an overall evaluation of uncertainty was given. It was assessed taking into account different contributions and determining their relative weights. Since such detectors are often read by a spark counter device, a model to describe its behaviour was developed and a saturation factor was estimated. Its expression and its associated uncertainty are given. Hence, it has been possible to draw a calibration curve, in which all the uncertainty sources have been considered.  相似文献

Uncertainty in radon measurements using the CR39 solid-state nuclear track detector in chambers is introduced by the unknown fraction f1 of 218Po that deposited onto the inner chamber walls. This uncertainty was estimated for cylindrical chambers with different size in the present study. It was found that the uncertainty increased with the chamber height and radius. For short chambers with a height H=2 cm the uncertainty was less than 5%, while in tall chambers with H=7 cm it could be up to 17%. The radial track density on the CR39 detector inside the diffusion chamber was also found to be dependent on the fraction f1. In this work, some examples of this dependence are shown.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate of a possible correlation between indoor radon and indoor gamma dose rates deduced by in situ gamma spectrometry measurements by using a portable HPGe detector. Indoor radon and high resolution in situ gamma spectrometry measurements were performed in 60 apartments in Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece. Geometric mean radon concentration is 52 Bq m(-3). The mean total absorbed dose rate in air due to gamma radiation is 56 +/- 9 nGy h(-1). The contribution of the different radionuclides to the total indoor gamma dose rate in air is 41% due to 40K, 36% due to the thorium series and 23% due to the uranium series. No correlation was found between indoor gamma dose rate due to the uranium series and indoor radon for ground and first floor apartments. For upper floor apartments (above the second floor) a weak correlation is observed. The mean annual effective dose due to radon is 1.15 mSv, i.e., more than four times higher compared to the effective dose due to gamma radiation (0.27 mSv).  相似文献

Long-term (circa 3 months) simultaneous measurements of indoor concentrations of thoron gas, airborne thoron progeny and radon were made using passive alpha track detectors in 205 dwellings in Ireland during the period 2007-09. Thoron progeny concentrations were measured using passive deposition monitors designed at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Japan, whereas thoron gas concentrations were measured using Raduet detectors (Radosys, Budapest). Radon concentrations were measured in these dwellings by means of NRPB/SSI type alpha track radon detectors as normally used by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII). The concentration of thoron gas ranged from <1 to 174 Bq m(-3) with an arithmetic mean (AM) of 22 Bq m(-3). The concentration of radon gas ranged from 4 to 767 Bq m(-3) with an AM of 75 Bq m(-3). For radon, the estimated annual doses were 0.1 (min), 19.2 (max) and 1.9 (AM) mSv y(-1). The concentration of thoron progeny ranged from <0.1 to 3.8 Bq m(-3) [equilibrium equivalent thoron concentration (EETC)] with an AM of 0.47 Bq m(-3) (EETC). The corresponding estimated annual doses were 2.9 (max) and 0.35 (mean) mSv y(-1). In 14 or 7% of the dwellings, the estimated doses from thoron progeny exceeded those from radon.  相似文献

Simultaneous indoor radon, radon-thoron progeny and high-resolution in situ gamma spectrometry measurements, with portable high-purity Ge detector were performed in 26 dwellings of Thessaloniki, the second largest town of Greece, during March 2003-January 2005. The radon gas was measured with an AlphaGUARD ionisation chamber (in each of the 26 dwellings) every 10 min, for a time period between 7 and 10 d. Most of the values of radon gas concentration are between 20 and 30 Bq m(-3), with an arithmetic mean of 34 Bq m(-3). The maximum measured value of radon gas concentration is 516 Bq m(-3). The comparison between the radon gas measurements, performed with AlphaGUARD and short-term electret ionisation chamber, shows very good agreement, taking into account the relative short time period of the measurement and the relative low radon gas concentration. Radon and thoron progeny were measured with a SILENA (model 4s) instrument. From the radon and radon progeny measurements, the equilibrium factor F could be deduced. Most of the measurements of the equilibrium factor are within the range 0.4-0.5. The mean value of the equilibrium factor F is 0.49 +/- 0.10, i.e. close to the typical value of 0.4 adopted by UNSCEAR. The mean equilibrium equivalent thoron concentration measured in the 26 dwellings is EEC(thoron) = 1.38 +/- 0.79 Bq m(-3). The mean equilibrium equivalent thoron to radon ratio concentration, measured in the 26 dwellings, is 0.1 +/- 0.06. The mean total absorbed dose rate in air, owing to gamma radiation, is 58 +/- 12 nGy h(-1). The contribution of the different radionuclides to the total indoor gamma dose rate in air is 38% due to 40K, 36% due to thorium series and 26% due to uranium series. The annual effective dose, due to the different source terms (radon, thoron and external gamma radiation), is 1.05, 0.39 and 0.28 mSv, respectively.  相似文献

A measurement method for measuring radon in water using the portable radon survey meter (RnSM) was developed. The container with propeller was used to stir the water samples and release radon from the water into the air in a sample box of the RnSM. In this method, the measurement of error would be <20 %, when the radon concentration in the mineral water was >20 Bq l(-1).  相似文献

On the case of a parallel metrological measurement of unattached and attached concentrations of radon progeny, the evaluation by an inversion of the Jacobi-Porstend?rfer room model indicates a real overestimation of the concentration of RaA ((218)Po).  相似文献
