Rats were given exposure either to an odor (almond) or a compound of odor plus taste (almond plus saline), prior to training in which the odor served as the conditioned stimulus. It was found, for both appetitive and aversive procedures, that conditioning was retarded by preexposure (a latent inhibition effect), and the extent of the retardation was greater in rats preexposed to the compound (i.e., latent inhibition to the odor was potentiated by the presence of the taste). In contrast, the presence of the taste during conditioning itself overshadowed learning about the odor. We argue that the presence of the salient taste in compound with the odor enhances the rate of associative learning, producing a rapid loss in the associability of the odor. This loss of associability will generate both overshadowing and the potentiation of latent inhibition that is observed after preexposure to the compound. Psychological research has placed great emphasis on inhibitory control due to its integral role in normal cognition and clinical disorders. The stop-signal task and associated measure—stop-signal reaction time (SSRT)—provides a well-established paradigm for measuring response inhibition. However, motivational influences on stop-signal performance and SSRT have not been examined. We conceptualize the stop-signal paradigm as a decision-making task involving the trade-off between fast responding and accurate inhibition. In 4 experiments, we demonstrate that performance trade-offs are influenced by inherent motivational biases and explicit strategic control. As a result, SSRT was lower when participants favored correct stopping over fast responding than when the same participants favored fast responding over correct stopping. We present a novel variant of the stop-signal task that uses monetary incentives to manipulate motivated speed-accuracy trade-offs. By sampling performance at multiple-trade-off settings, we obtain a measure of inhibitory ability that is independent of trade-off bias, and thus, more easily interpretable when comparing across participants. We present a theory of latent inhibition based on the Pearce–Hall (Pearce & Hall, 1980) model for classical conditioning. Its central features are (1) that the associability of a stimulus declines as it comes to predict its consequences and (2) that nonreinforced exposure to a stimulus engages an associative learning process that makes the stimulus an accurate predictor of its consequences (in this case, the occurrence of no event). A formalization of this theory is shown to accommodate the finding that preexposure in compound with another cue can potentiate latent inhibition to the target cue. It further predicts that preexposure to the added cue will eliminate the potentiation effect. An experiment using rats and the flavor-aversion procedure confirmed this prediction. Neuronal activity of the auditory thalamus, amygdala, cingulate cortex, and substantia nigra was recorded during the administration of a behavioral test for latent inhibition (LI) or the retardation of behavioral conditioning because of preexposure of the conditional stimulus (CS). Following CS preexposure, both the preexposed CS and a control CS predicted avoidable footshock. LI occurred as significantly fewer avoidance conditioned avoidance responses after the preexposed CS than after the control CS. Attenuation of neuronal responses to the preexposed CS, or neural LI, occurred in all monitored areas. One group of subjects (Oryctolagus cuniculus) then received context extinction, and additional groups experienced novel context exposure or handling. Context extinction enhanced behavioral responding to the preexposed CS, eliminating LI. Context extinction also eliminated cingulate cortical neural LI by enhancing posterior cingulate cortical responses to the preexposed CS and attenuating anterior cingulate cortical responses to the control CS. Present and past results are interpreted to indicate that LI is (a) a failure of response retrieval and/or expression mediated by interfering CS-context associations and (b) a product of interactions of the posterior cingulate cortex and the hippocampus. The potential for genetic improvement of reproductive performance in pigs is great. Improvement can be achieved by increased commercial use of F1 hybrid females produced by crossing lines with excellent reproductive performance and by selection within nucleus populations of these lines for improved reproduction as well a for growth and carcass characteristics. The value of incorporating reproductive traits in selection programs is critically dependent on the relative economic values of fat (or lean) and of extra pigs produced. There is widespread agreement that litter size is the first choice as both the selection objective and the criterion to improve reproductive performance, on economic, genetic, and ease of measurement grounds. Although there are few examples of successful response to selection for increased litter size in pigs (exceptions being the University of Nebraska selection experiment and results achieved by hyperprolific selection schemes), overall results do not suggest that selection for litter size is impossible, only that it is difficult with limited resources. Artificial insemination is being used increasingly by pig breeding companies to accelerate rates of genetic improvement and to improve dissemination. Combining data from genetically connected herds and analyzing with BLUP computer programs to make efficient use of information on relatives makes selection for litter size feasible while maintaining selection pressure for growth and carcass traits. Although selection for lifetime productivity is impractical today, the knowledge and data accumulated from successful breeding programs for litter size may help make it the selection objective of the future. Meanwhile, the search continues for useful indirect criteria for selection, from testis size to molecular markers, and scientists are working with highly prolific breeds of Chinese pigs to better understand the physiologic and genetic basis of large litter size.  相似文献

The present selective review examines genetic influences on learning disabilities (LDs). We discuss recent advances in molecular genetics that have made linkage analysis a more powerful tool for studying the genetics of behavioral phenotypes. We also examine what is known about genetic influences in two familial disorders, developmental dyslexia and Tourette syndrome (TS). Although TS is not a LD, there are claims that it is associated with LDs as well as with other related behavioral phenotypes. We briefly consider an opposite strategy for examining whether it leads to a specific LD phenotype. We also discuss criteria that must be satisfied before we can conclude either that a phenotype is genetically influenced or that a known genetic alteration leads to a specific and consistent cognitive phenotype. This study examined genetic and environmental influences on global family conflict. The sample comprised 872 same-sex pairs of twin parents, their spouses/partners, and one adolescent child per twin from the Twin and Offspring Study in Sweden. The twins, spouses, and child each reported on the degree of family conflict, and there was significant agreement among the family members’ ratings. These shared perspectives were explained by one common factor, indexing global family conflict. Genetic influences explained 36% of the variance in this common factor, suggesting that twins’ heritable characteristics contribute to family conflict, via genotype-environment correlation. Nonshared environmental effects explained the remaining 64% of this variance, indicating that twins’ unique childhood and/or current family experiences also play an important role. Six experiments used a magazine approach paradigm with rats to investigate latent inhibition (LI). Experiment 1 found that compound conditioning did not increase evidence for LI, in contrast to predictions from acquisition-deficit models that are based on a common error term (e.g., J. M. Pearce & G. Hall, 1980; A. R. Wagner, 1981). Instead, it appeared that preexposed and non-preexposed stimuli conditioned to the same asymptote following compound conditioning, as is the case when these stimuli are conditioned separately. This was confirmed in three further experiments that used probe trials to measure conditioning to each conditioned stimulus across the course of compound training. In these experiments, LI was observed during initial but not extended compound training, consistent with predictions derived from M. E. Bouton (1997) and the SLG model (N. A. Schmajuk, Y. Lam, & J. A. Gray, 1996). However, 2 further experiments did not support these models. Instead, these findings are most consistent with models that use separate error terms to compute the associative strength of conditioned stimuli conditioned in compound (S. E. Brandon, E. H. This study used anatomical cues to suggest a functional dissociation between the roles of the entorhinal cortex and the hippocampus in learning. The authors proposed that the highly convergent inputs to the entorhinal cortex indicate this region may be particularly important for selecting or compressing information. This hypothesis was tested in rabbits (Oryctolagus cunniculus) trained on an associative learning task that is a common index of stimulus selection. In this task, known as latent inhibition, preexposure to a stimulus (such as a tone) leads to slowed learning when the same tone is subsequently paired with an outcome (such as an airpuff to the eye). As hypothesized, rabbits with neurotoxic lesions of the entorhinal cortex failed to show slowed learning following preexposure (no latent inhibition) and learned the association faster than control rabbits. Analyzed data from a longitudinal twin study of personality using Wilson's repeated measures analysis of variance for twin data obtained from 42 pairs of twins. Average age of Ss in adolescence was 15.9 yrs, and at follow-up 27.9 yrs. Genetic influences on the MMPI and the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) profile contour and profile elevation at adolescence and at adulthood, and on the age-to-age changes in profile contour and profile elevation, were examined. Results provide evidence of significant genetic variance in the organization of personality as reflected by the CPI profile contour and in the global facets of personality reflected by the MMPI and CPI profile elevations. Assessed genetic and environmental influences on perceptions of organizational climate by using a 4-group twin design. Data were obtained as part of the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging. The Work Environment Scale (WES) was used to evaluate perceptions of organizational climate. A measure of job satisfaction was also used to evaluate the effects of genes and environments on job attitudes. Maximum likelihood estimates of genetic and environmental influence suggested significant genetic effects for Supportive Climate, 1 factor resulting from a factor analysis of the WES, but not for a 2nd factor, Time Pressure. Significant environmental effects were found for both Supportive Climate and Time Pressure. Genetic effects were not significant for job satisfaction. C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) mice have been characterized previously as seizure-resistant and seizure-sensitive, respectively, a distinction based primarily upon a differential response to the convulsant effects of various drugs. In the present study, electroconvulsive shock (ECS) was used to assess maximal electroshock threshold (MET) in B6, D2 and hybrid mice. Results revealed that D2 mice have a significantly lower MET compared to B6 mice. There was also a significant gender effect for B6 and F2 mice with females exhibiting a lower MET compared to males. METs for F1 and F2 intercross mice were intermediate between the two parental strains. The difference in variance between F2 and F1 generation mice indicated that about three-quarters of the total variance is due to genetic influence. Taken together, results of this study suggest that the large difference in MET between B6 and D2 mice is a highly heritable trait which may yield to genetic dissection through use of quantitative trait locus mapping.  相似文献

The Minnesota Importance Questionnaire (MIQ), measuring work values, was administered to 23 monozygotic and 20 dizygotic reared-apart twin pairs to test the hypothesis that genetic factors are associated with work values. Both univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. In the univariate analysis, intraclass correlations were computed to estimate the proportion of variability in work values associated with genetic factors for each of the 20 MIQ scales and for the 6 higher-order work value scales. The multivariate analysis used maximum likelihood estimation to separate the genetic and environmental factors for the correlated higher-order scales. Results from both analyses indicated that, on average, 40% of the variance in measured work values was related to genetic factors, whereas approximately 60% of the variance was associated with environmental factors and error variance. Two conditioned suppression experiments with rats investigated the influence on latent inhibition of compounding a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor with the target cue during preexposure treatment. Results were compared with those of subjects that received conventional latent inhibition training, no preexposure, or preexposure to the target cue in compound with a neutral stimulus. In Experiment 1, greater attenuation of the latent inhibition effect was observed in subjects that received target preexposure in compound with a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor relative to subjects that received preexposure with a neutral stimulus or to the target alone. In Experiment 2, this protection from latent inhibition was attenuated if the excitor that was used to train the conditioned inhibitor was extinguished between preexposure and target training. Behavioral and neural correlates of latent inhibition (LI) during eyeblink conditioning were studied in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were conditioned after 8 days of tone conditioned stimulus (CS) presentations or 8 days of context-alone experience. LI was seen in the CS-preexposed rabbits when a relatively intense (5 psi) airpuff unconditioned stimulus was paired with the CS. In Experiment 2, rabbits were given 0, 4, or 8 days of CS preexposures or context-alone experience. Hippocampal activity was monitored from the 8-day CS- or context-exposure rabbits. The LI effect was seen only in rabbits given 4 days of CS preexposure, thus suggesting that LI depended largely on the rate of acquisition in the context-preexposed control group. The neural recordings showed that the hippocampus was sensitive to the relative novelty of the stimuli and the overall context, regardless of whether exposure to stimuli and context promoted LI. Latent inhibition (LI) refers to decrement in conditioning to a stimulus as a result of its prior nonreinforced preexposure. This robust phenomenon has been shown in classical and instrumental conditioning procedures and in many mammalian species, including humans. Development of LI reflects decreased associability of, or attention to, stimuli that predict no significant outcome. The fact that LI reflects attentional processes has become important to neuroscientists who see LI as a convenient tool for measuring the effects of drug treatments and lesions on attention. Data on brain systems studied for their involvement in LI are surveyed. These are presented in sections on noradrenergic, cholinergic, dopaminergic, serotonergic, and septo-hippocampal manipulations. It is concluded that the neural substrates of LI include the mesolimbic dopaminergic system (MDS), the mesolimbic serotonergic system (MSS), and the hippocampus. The preexposed stimulus loses its capacity to affect behavior in conditioning, even though it predicts reinforcement, because the hippocampus inhibits the switching mechanism of the nucleus accumbens via the subiculum-accumbens pathway. Most studies have considered the effects of particular characteristics on academic achievement individually, which means that little is known about how they function together. Using the population-based Minnesota Twin Family Study, the authors investigated the effects of child academic engagement (interest, involvement, effort), IQ, depression, externalizing behavior, and family environmental risk on academic achievement (reported school grades) from ages 11 through 17. Hierarchical linear growth curve modeling showed main effects on initial reported Grades for all variables, and IQ mitigated the deleterious effects of family risk and externalizing. Only engagement affected change in Grades through adolescence. Influences on initial Grades were strongly genetically influenced, associated primarily with IQ, engagement, and externalizing behavior. Shared environmental influences on initial Grades linked engagement, IQ, and family risk. Genetic influences on change in Grades were substantial, but they were not associated with the academic, family risk, and mental health covarying factors. These results indicate that age 11 achievement and change in achievement through adolescence show systematic patterns and document the existence of individual differences in the commonly shared developmental experience of adapting to the school environment. EEG coherence measures the covariation in electrical brain activity between two locations on the scalp and is used to study connectivity between cortical regions. The aim of this study was to determine the heritability of EEG coherence. Coherence was measured in a group of 213 16-yr-old twin pairs. By including male and female twin pairs in the sample, sex differences in genetic architecture were systematically examined. The EEG was obtained during quiet supine resting. Coherence was estimated for short and long distance combinations of electrode pairs along the anterior-posterior axis within a hemisphere for four frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha and beta). Averaged over all electrode combinations about 60% of the variance was explained by genetic factors for coherence in the theta, alpha and beta bands. For the delta band, the heritability was somewhat lower. No systematic sex differences in genetic architecture were found. All environmental influences were nonshared, i.e., unique factors including measurement error. Environmental factors shared by twin siblings did not influence variation in EEG coherence. These results suggest that individual differences in coherence form a potential candidate for (molecular) genetic studies on brain function.  相似文献

Three experiments, using a conditioned suppression procedure with 112 male hooded Lister rats, examined the mechanisms of context specificity of conditioning, extinction, and latent inhibition. Exp I replicated previous demonstrations of context specificity of conditioning and extinction. Conditioning in one context did not necessarily transfer perfectly to another, and if extinction was carried out in a context different from that of conditioning, Ss showed a recovery of suppression when tested in the conditioning context. But both of these results disappeared when the familiarity and associative values of the 2 contexts were equated. Exp II replicated this failure to obtain context specificity of conditioning and extinction, but it did obtain context specificity of latent inhibition. Ss preexposed and conditioned to stimuli in the same context showed more profound latent inhibition than those preexposed and conditioned in different contexts. In Exp III, this effect was replicated. It is concluded that context specificity of conditioning or extinction may arise from the failure to control the associative status of the contexts used, whereas that of latent inhibition can best be explained by A. R. Wagner's (1976, 1981) theory of associative learning. Results offer no support for the view that, under conditions such as these, contexts serve as conditional cues, signaling the relationships between events occurring in their presence.
