To design, optimise and deliver multimedia and virtual-reality products and services it is necessary to match performance to the capabilities of users. When a multimedia system is used, the presence of audio and video stimuli introduces significant cross-modal effects (the sensory streams interact). This paper introduces a number of cross-modal interactions that are relevant to communications systems and discusses the advanced experimental techniques required to provide data for modelling multi-modal perception. The aim of the work is to provide a multi-modal perceptual model that can be used for performance assessment and can be incorporated into coding algorithms. Human-centred Intelligent Systems and Soft Computing   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper considers the abstract features of human/machine interaction systems that are required for the production of intelligent behaviour. A conceptual architecture is then proposed for a subset of intelligent systems called human-centred intelligent systems (HCISs) and it is argued that such systems must be autonomous, robust and adaptive in order to be intelligent. Soft computing is proposed as a promising new technique that can be used to build HCISs, and examples are presented where this is already being done. Finally, flexibility is defined to be a combination of the often-conflicting requirements of robustness and adaptability, and it is argued that the right balance between these two features is necessary to achieve intelligent behaviour.  相似文献

Knowledge-based systems are founded on the idea that knowledge should be declarative, so that it can be easily read, understood, and altered by a human user as well as by a machine. Logic fulfils these criteria, and logic programming has been widely used for implementing knowledge-based systems. One major shortcoming of logic programming is the lack of a mechanism to deal with the uncertainty inherent in many knowledge-based systems. Soft computing is a key technology for the management of uncertainty, although so far its major successes have been centred on fuzzy control rather than higher level information management. This paper outlines some of the issues related to the area of soft computing in knowledge-based systems, and suggests some simple problems to test the capabilities of software. Fril is discussed as an implementation language for knowledge-based systems involving uncertainty, and some of its applications are outlined.  相似文献

For pervasive computing ideas to reach, and be used, by the general public, they should fulfil an unmet need. Automation of manual tasks in the home, car or at work provides a rich environment for new services and applications. Pervasive computing can be the infrastructure upon which such services can be built. However, without intelligent systems to support pervasive computing environments, users will be overwhelmed by the complexity of the systems with which they are asked to interact. Experience shows that, to be adopted, technologies must address a need without making unreasonable demands of the user, and without imposing huge maintenance and access costs. Intelligent systems will play a major part in enabling the applications that will create user need in pervasive computing environments — facilitating user access to the environment and reducing management cost to supportable levels. This paper will explore the social and technological research issues relevant to the use of intelligent systems in pervasive computing. These include privacy and data protection, user interface and human interaction with intelligent systems, knowledge acquisition, and the management of large-scale systems capable of autonomous action.  相似文献

This paper describes the vision of the Traffimatics project — the vision of the connected car. Traffimatics aims to develop the concept of intelligent co-operative vehicle highway systems, supporting a wide range of applications ranging from real-time traffic information and safety warnings to in-car entertainment and personal telematics. The project also investigates the possibilities of using vehicles to create a large-scale self-organising sensor and communications network enabling the intelligent co-operative vehicle highway systems vision. Most issues carried out about building integrated photovoltaic (PV) system performance show average losses of about 20%–25% in electricity production. The causes are varied, e.g., mismatching losses, partial shadows, variations in current–voltage$(I$$V)$characteristics of PV modules due to manufacturing processes, differences in the orientations and inclinations of solar surfaces, and temperature effects. These losses can be decreased by means of suitable electronics. This paper presents the intelligent PV module concept, a low-cost high-efficiency dc–dc converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) functions, control, and power line communications (PLC). In addition, this paper analyses the alternatives for the architecture of grid-connected PV systems: centralized, string, and modular topologies. The proposed system, i.e., the intelligent PV module, fits within this last group. Its principles of operation, as well as the topology of boost dc–dc converter, are analyzed. Besides, a comparison of MPPT methods is performed, which shows the best results for the incremental conductance method. Regarding communications, PLC in every PV module and its feasibility for grid-connected PV plants are considered and analyzed in this paper. After developing an intelligent PV module (with dc–dc converter) prototype, its optimal performance has been experimentally confirmed by means of the PV system test platform. This paper describes this powerful tool especially designed to evaluate all kinds of PV systems.  相似文献

Great progress of technologies makes intelligent transportation system (ITS) services increasingly desirable. It becomes essential to seamlessly connecting to the Internet for accessing high quality Internet-enabled ITS services. In this context, gateway is recognized as the logical portal to the Internet. The efficiency of gateway regulation hence significantly sways the quality of ITS services. To seamlessly access the Internet in ITSs, a cloud-supported gateway model is proposed in this paper. Accordingly, the weighty load of gateway government, including gateway registration, discovery, selection, dispatching, and handoff, is offloaded from the clients to the appointed cloud servers. Numerical analyses and simulation results suggest that the gateway model proposed in this paper effectively improves the system performance in terms of the packet delivery rate, end-to-end delay, signaling overhead, and gateway connectivity; and, correspondingly enhances the usage experience of Internet-enabled ITS services.  相似文献
