Approximate graph coloring takes as input a graph and returns a legal coloring which is not necessarily optimal. We improve the performance guarantee, or worst-case ratio between the number of colors used and the minimum number of colors possible, toO(n(log logn)3/(logn)3), anO(logn/log logn) factor better than the previous best-known result.  相似文献

An algorithm for finding a minimal edge coloring of a bipartite multigraph is presented. The algorithm usesO(V 1/2 ElogV + V) time andO(E + V) space. It is based on a divide-and-conquer strategy, using euler partitions to divide the graph. A modification of the algorithm for matching is described. This algorithm finds a maximum matching of a regular bipartite graph with all degrees 2n, inO(E + V) time andO(E + V) space. This work was partially supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant GJ36461.  相似文献

This paper determines upper bounds on the expected time complexity for a variety of parallel algorithms for undirected and directed random graph problems. For connectivity, biconnectivity, transitive closure, minimum spanning trees, and all pairs minimum cost paths, we prove the expected time to beO(log logn) for the CRCW PRAM (this parallel RAM machine allows resolution of write conflicts) andO(logn · log logn) for the CREW PRAM (which allows simultaneous reads but not simultaneous writes). We also show that the problem of graph isomorphism has expected parallel timeO(log logn) for the CRCW PRAM andO(logn) for the CREW PRAM. Most of these results follow because of upper bounds on the mean depth of a graph, derived in this paper, for more general graphs than was known before. For undirected connectivity especially, we present a new probabilistic algorithm which runs on a randomized input and has an expected running time ofO(log logn) on the CRCW PRAM, withO(n) expected number of processors only. Our results also improve known upper bounds on the expected space required for sequential graph algorithms. For example, we show that the problems of finding connected components, transitive closure, minimum spanning trees, and minimum cost paths have expected sequential spaceO(logn · log logn) on a deterministic Turing Machine. We use a simulation of the CRCW PRAM to get these expected sequential space bounds. This research was supported by National Science Foundation Grant DCR-85-03251 and Office of Naval Research Contract N00014-80-C-0647.This research was partially supported by the National Science Foundation Grants MCS-83-00630, DCR-8503497, by the Greek Ministry of Research and Technology, and by the ESPRIT Basic Research Actions Project ALCOM.  相似文献

We give an improved parallel algorithm for the problem of computing the tube minima of a totally monotonen ×n ×n matrix, an important matrix searching problem that was formalized by Aggarwal and Park and has many applications. Our algorithm runs inO(log logn) time withO(n2/log logn) processors in theCRCW-PRAM model, whereas the previous best ran inO((log logn)2) time withO(n2/(log logn)2 processors, also in theCRCW-PRAM model. Thus we improve the speed without any deterioration in thetime ×processors product. Our improved bound immediately translates into improvedCRCW-PRAM bounds for the numerous applications of this problem, including string editing, construction of Huffmann codes and other coding trees, and many other combinatorial and geometric problems. This research was supported by the Office of Naval Research under Grants N00014-84-K-0502 and N00014-86-K-0689, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under Grant AFOSR-90-0107, the National Science Foundation under Grant DCR-8451393, and the National Library of Medicine under Grant R01-LM05118. Computing shortest paths in a directed graph has received considerable attention in the sequential RAM model of computation. However, developing a polylog-time parallel algorithm that is close to the sequential optimal in terms of the total work done remains an elusive goal. We present a first step in this direction by giving efficient parallel algorithms for shortest paths in planar layered digraphs. We show that these graphs admit special kinds of separators calledone- way separators which allow the paths in the graph to cross it only once. We use these separators to give divide- and -conquer solutions to the problem of finding the shortest paths between any two vertices. We first give a simple algorithm that works in the CREW model and computes the shortest path between any two vertices in ann-node planar layered digraph in timeO(log2 n) usingn/logn processors. We then use results of Aggarwal and Park [1] and Atallah [4] to improve the time bound toO(log2 n) in the CREW model andO(logn log logn) in the CREW model. The processor bounds still remain asn/logn for the CREW model andn/log logn for the CRCW model.Support for the first and third authors was provided in part by a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award CCR-9047466 with matching funds from IBM, by NSF Research Grant CCR-9007851, by Army Research Office Grant DAAL03-91-G-0035, and by the Office of Naval Research and the Advanced Research Projects Agency under Contract N00014-91-J-4052, ARPA, Order 8225. We study the problem of maintaining the 2-edge-, 2-vertex-, and 3-edge-connected components of a dynamic planar graph subject to edge deletions. The 2-edge-connected components can be maintained in a total ofO(n logn) time under any sequence of at mostO(n) deletions. This givesO(logn) amortized time per deletion. The 2-vertex- and 3-edge-connected components can be maintained in a total ofO(n log2 n) time. This givesO(log2 n) amortized time per deletion. The space required by all our data structures isO(n). All our time bounds improve previous bounds. This work was partially supported by the ESPRIT II Basic Research Actions Program of the EC under Project ALCOM II (contract No. 7141) and Project ASMICS. We study the message complexity of the problem of distributively electing a leader in chordal rings. Such networks consist of a basic ring with additional links, the extreme cases being the oriented ring and the complete graph with a full sense of direction. We present a general election algorithm for these networks, and prove its optimality. As a corollary, we show thatO(logn) chords at each processor suffice to obtain an algorithm that uses at mostO(n) messages; this improves and extends a previous work, where an algorithm, also usingO(n) messages, was suggested for the case where alln-1 chords exist (the oriented complete network). The work of this author was supported in part by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under Grant No. A2415.The work of this author was supported in part by Technion Research Grant No. 120-0641.  相似文献

The following three problems concerning random graphs can be solved in (log n)O(1) expected time using linearly many processors: (1) finding the lexicographically first maximal independent set, (2) coloring the vertices using a number of colors that is almost surely within twice the chromatic number, and (3) finding a Hamiltonian circuit.  相似文献

Parallel algorithms for the problems of selection and searching on sorted matrices are formulated. The selection algorithm takesO(lognlog lognlog*n) time withO(n/lognlog*n) processors on an EREW PRAM. This algorithm can be generalized to solve the selection problem on a set of sorted matrices. The searching algorithm takesO(log logn) time withO(n/log logn) processors on a Common CRCW PRAM, which is optimal. We show that no algorithm using at mostnlogcnprocessors,c≥ 1, can solve the matrix search problem in time faster than Ω(log logn) and that Ω(logn) steps are needed to solve this problem on any model that does not allow concurrent writes.  相似文献

We improve upon the running time of several graph and network algorithms when applied to dense graphs. In particular, we show how to compute on a machine with word size = (logn) a maximal matching in ann-vertex bipartite graph in timeO(n 2+n 2.5/)=O(n 2.5/logn), how to compute the transitive closure of a digraph withn vertices andm edges in timeO(n 2+nm/), how to solve the uncapacitated transportation problem with integer costs in the range [O.C] and integer demands in the range [–U.U] in timeO ((n 3 (log log/logn)1/2+n2 logU) lognC), and how to solve the assignment problem with integer costs in the range [O.C] in timeO(n 2.5 lognC/(logn/loglogn)1/4).Assuming a suitably compressed input, we also show how to do depth-first and breadth-first search and how to compute strongly connected components and biconnected components in timeO(n+n 2/), and how to solve the single source shortest-path problem with integer costs in the range [O.C] in time0 (n 2(logC)/logn). For the transitive closure algorithm we also report on the experiences with an implementation. Most of this research was carried out while both authors worked at the Fachbereich Informatik, Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken, Germany. Distance labeling schemes are composed of a marker algorithm for labeling the vertices of a graph with short labels, coupled with a decoder algorithm allowing one to compute the distance between any two vertices directly from their labels (without using any additional information). As applications for distance labeling schemes concern mainly large and dynamically changing networks, it is of interest to study distributed dynamic labeling schemes. The current paper considers the problem on dynamic trees, and proposes efficient distributed schemes for it. The paper first presents a labeling scheme for distances in the dynamic tree model, with amortized message complexity O(log2 n) per operation, where n is the size of the tree at the time the operation takes place. The protocol maintains O(log2 n) bit labels. This label size is known to be optimal even in the static scenario. A more general labeling scheme is then introduced for the dynamic tree model, based on extending an existing static tree labeling scheme to the dynamic setting. The approach fits a number of natural tree functions, such as distance, separation level, and flow. The main resulting scheme incurs an overhead of an O(log n) multiplicative factor in both the label size and amortized message complexity in the case of dynamically growing trees (with no vertex deletions). If an upper bound on n is known in advance, this method yields a different tradeoff, with an O(log2 n/log log n) multiplicative overhead on the label size but only an O(log n/log log n) overhead on the amortized message complexity. In the fully dynamic model the scheme also incurs an increased additive overhead in amortized communication, of O(log2 n) messages per operation.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of on-line graph coloring. In an instance of on-line graph coloring, the nodes are presented one at a time. As each node is presented, its edges to previously presented nodes are also given. Each node must be assigned a color, different from the colors of its neighbors, before the next node is given. LetA(G) be the number of colors used by algorithmA on a graphG and letx(G) be the chromatic number ofG. The performance ratio of an on-line graph coloring algorithm for a class of graphsC is maxG C(A(G)/(G)). We consider the class ofd-inductive graphs. A graphG isd-inductive if the nodes ofG can be numbered so that each node has at mostd edges to higher-numbered nodes. In particular, planar graphs are 5-inductive, and chordal graphs arex(G)-inductive. First Fit is the algorithm that assigns each node the lowest-numbered color possible. We show that ifG isd-inductive, then First Fit usesO(d logn) colors onG. This yields an upper bound ofo(logn) on the performance ratio of First Fit on chordal and planar graphs. First Fit does as well as any on-line algorithm ford-inductive graphs: we show that, for anyd and any on-line graph coloring algorithmA, there is ad-inductive graph that forcesA to use (d logn) colors to colorG. We also examine on-line graph coloring with lookahead. An algorithm is on-line with lookaheadl, if it must color nodei after examining only the firstl+i nodes. We show that, forl/logn, the lower bound ofd logn colors still holds. This research was supported by an IBM Graduate Fellowship.  相似文献

LetG(V,E) be a simple undirected graph with a maximum vertex degree Δ(G) (or Δ for short), |V| =nand |E| =m. An edge-coloring ofGis an assignment to each edge inGa color such that all edges sharing a common vertex have different colors. The minimum number of colors needed is denoted by χ′(G) (called thechromatic index). For a simple graphG, it is known that Δ ≤ χ′(G) ≤ Δ + 1. This paper studies two edge-coloring problems. The first problem is to perform edge-coloring for an existing edge-colored graphGwith Δ + 1 colors stemming from the addition of a new vertex intoG. The proposed parallel algorithm for this problem runs inO3/2log3Δ + Δ logn) time usingO(max{nΔ, Δ3}) processors. The second problem is to color the edges of a given uncolored graphGwith Δ + 1 colors. For this problem, our first parallel algorithm requiresO5.5log3Δ logn+ Δ5log4n) time andO(max{n2Δ,nΔ3}) processors, which is a slight improvement on the algorithm by H. J. Karloff and D. B. Shmoys [J. Algorithms8 (1987), 39–52]. Their algorithm costsO6log4n) time andO(n2Δ) processors if we use the fastest known algorithm for finding maximal independent sets by M. Goldberg and T. Spencer [SIAM J. Discrete Math.2 (1989), 322–328]. Our second algorithm requiresO4.5log3Δ logn+ Δ4log4n) time andO(max{n2,nΔ3}) processors. Finally, we present our third algorithm by incorporating the second algorithm as a subroutine. This algorithm requiresO3.5log3Δ logn+ Δ3log4n) time andO(max{n2log Δ,nΔ3}) processors, which improves, by anO2.5) factor in time, on Karloff and Shmoys' algorithm. All of these algorithms run in the COMMON CRCW PRAM model.  相似文献

Dynamic fractional cascading   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The problem of searching for a key in many ordered lists arises frequently in computational geometry. Chazelle and Guibas recently introduced fractional cascading as a general technique for solving this type of problem. In this paper we show that fractional cascading also supports insertions into and deletions from the lists efficiently. More specifically, we show that a search for a key inn lists takes timeO(logN +n log logN) and an insertion or deletion takes timeO(log logN). HereN is the total size of all lists. If only insertions or deletions have to be supported theO(log logN) factor reduces toO(1). As an application we show that queries, insertions, and deletions into segment trees or range trees can be supported in timeO(logn log logn), whenn is the number of segments (points). This research was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft under Grants Me 620/6-1 and SFB 124, Teilprojekt B2. The problem of partitioning a rectilinear figure into rectangles with minimum length is NP-hard and has bounded heuristics. In this paper we study a related problem,Elimination Problem (EP), in which a rectilinear figure is partitioned into a set of rectilinear figures containing no concave vertices of a fixed direction with minimum length. We show that a heuristic for EP within a factor of 4 from optimal can be computed in timeO(n 2), wheren is the number of vertices of the input figure, and a variant of this heuristic, within a factor of 6 from optimal, can be computed in timeO(n logn). As an application, we give a bounded heuristic for the problem of partitioning a rectilinear figure into histograms of a fixed direction with minimum length. An auxiliary result is that an optimal rectangular partition of a monotonic histogram can be computed in timeO(n 2), using a known speed-up technique in dynamic programming.Part of this work was done when the first author was a postdoctor fellow in MSRI, Berkeley, and supported in part by NSF Grant No. 8120790. We provide a new EREW PRAM algorithm to maintain the minimum spanning tree (MST) of an undirected weighted graph. Our approach combines the sparsification data structure with a novel parallel technique which efficiently treats single edge deletions. The proposed parallel algorithm requires O(log n) time and O(n2/3 log(m/n)) work, where n and m are respectively the number of nodes and edges of the given graph.  相似文献
