The transformation of ultrafine powders (particle size, 0.01 to 0.04 μm) of the system ZrO2–Al2O3, prepared by spraying their corresponding nitrate solutions into an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) of ultrahigh temperature, was investigated. The powders were composed of metastable tetragonal ZrO2 ( mt- ZrO2) and γ-Al2O3. On heating, the mt- ZrO2 (or tetragonal ZrO2, t -ZrO2) was retained up to 1200°C. At 1380°C the transformation to monoclinic ZrO2 ( m -ZrO2) occurred and the amount of the m -ZrO2 decreased with the increase in Al2O3 content, thus indicating the stabilization of the t -ZrO2 by the Al2O3, which seems to be explained in terms of the retardation of grain growth.  相似文献

Tetragonal ZrO2 ( t -ZrO2) solid solutions were prepared with addit ons of 2 mol% Y2O3 plus up to 0.45 mol% Nb2O5. The thermal expansion coefficients in both the a- and c -axis lattice directions increased with Nb2O5 alloying and the thermal expansion in the c -axis direction was greater than that in the a -axis direction over the entire composition range. This anisotropic thermal expansion behavior was related to the 4-fold coordination of Nb5+ with oxygen ions in t -ZrO2 solid solutions in the system ZrO2–Y2O3–Nb2O5. The fracture toughness continuously increased with Nb2O5 alloying and suggested that the c/a axial ratio is a more significant factor than the internal stress that arises from the thermal expansion anisotropy, in the determination of the transformability of t -ZrO2 in this system.  相似文献

Undoped or Y2O3-doped ZrO2 thin films were deposited on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with either sulfonate or methyl terminal functionalities on single-crystal silicon substrates. The undoped films were formed by enhanced hydrolysis of zirconium sulfate (Zr(SO4)·4H4O) solutions in the presence of HCl at 70°C. Typically, these films were a mixture of two phases: nanocrystalline tetragonal- ( t -) ZrO2 and an amorphous basic zirconium sulfate. However, films with little or no amorphous material could be produced. The mechanism of film formation and the growth kinetics have been explained through a coagulation model involving homogeneous nucleation, particle adhesion, and aggregation onto the substrate. Annealing of these films at 500°C led to complete crystallization to t -ZrO2. Amorphous Y2O3-containing ZrO2 films were prepared from a precursor solution containing zirconium sulfate, yttrium sulfate (Y2(SO4)38·H2O), and urea (NH2CONH2) at pH 2.2–3.0 at 80°C. These films also were fully crystalline after annealing at 500°C.  相似文献

The effect of Y2O3 content on the flexure strength of melt-grown Al2O3–ZrO2 eutectics was studied in a temperature range of 25°–1427°C. The processing conditions were carefully controlled to obtain a constant microstructure independent of Y2O3 content. The rod microstructure was made up of alternating bands of fine and coarse dispersions of irregular ZrO2 platelets oriented along the growth axis and embedded in the continuous Al2O3 matrix. The highest flexure strength at ambient temperature was found in the material with 3 mol% Y2O3 in relation to ZrO2(Y2O3). Higher Y2O3 content did not substantially modify the mechanical response; however, materials with 0.5 mol% presented a significant degradation in the flexure strength because of the presence of large defects. They were nucleated at the Al2O3–ZrO2 interface during the martensitic transformation of ZrO2 on cooling and propagated into the Al2O3 matrix driven by the tensile residual stresses generated by the transformation. The material with 3 mol% Y2O3 retained 80% of the flexure strength at 1427°C, whereas the mechanical properties of the eutectic with 0.5 mol% Y2O3 dropped rapidly with temperature as a result of extensive microcracking.  相似文献

The crystallization of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 glasses at 1000°C was studied. Isothermal heat treatments of a cordierite-based glass (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2= Mg2Al4Si5O18) with 7 wt% ZrO2 produced surface crystallization of α-cordierite and tetragonal ZrO2 ( t -ZrO2). These phases advanced into the glass by cocrystallization of t -ZrO2 rods in an α-cordierite matrix with a well-defined orientation relation. The t -ZrO2 rods were unstable with respect to diffusional breakup (a Rayleigh instability) and decomposed into rows of aligned ellipsoidal and spheroidal particles. The t -ZrO2 was very resistant to transformation to monoclinic symmetry. With a similar glass containing 15 wt% ZrO2, surface crystallization of α-cordierite and t -ZrO2 was accompanied by internal crystallization of t -ZrO2 dendrites. Transformation of the dendrites to mono-clinic symmetry was observed under some conditions.  相似文献

The cubic ( c -ZrO2) and tetragonal zirconia ( t -ZrO2) phase stability regions in the system ZrO2–Y2O3–Ta2O5 were delineated. The c -ZrO2 solid solutions are formed with the fluorite structure. The t -ZrO2 solid solutions having a c/a axial ratio (tetragonality) smaller than 1.0203 display high fracture toughness (5 to 14 MPa · m1/2), and their instability/transformability to monoclinic zirconia ( m -ZrO2) increases with increasing tetragonality. On the other hand, the t -ZrO2 solid solutions stabilized at room temperature with tetragonality greater than 1.0203 have low toughness values (2 to 5 MPa · m1/2), and their transformability is not related to the tetragonality.  相似文献

The subsolidus phase relations in the entire system ZrO2-Y2O3 were established using DTA, expansion measurements, and room- and high-temperature X-ray diffraction. Three eutectoid reactions were found in the system: ( a ) tetragonal zirconia solid solution→monoclinic zirconia solid solution+cubic zirconia solid solution at 4.5 mol% Y2O3 and ∼490°C, ( b ) cubic zirconia solid solutiow→δ-phase Y4Zr3O12+hexagonalphase Y6ZrO11 at 45 mol% Y2O3 and ∼1325°±25°C, and ( c ) yttria C -type solid solution→wcubic zirconia solid solution+ hexagonal phase Y6ZrO11 at ∼72 mol% Y2O3 and 1650°±50°C. Two ordered phases were also found in the system, one at 40 mol% Y2O3 with ideal formula Y4Zr3O12, and another, a new hexagonal phase, at 75 mol% Y2O3 with formula Y6ZrO11. They decompose at 1375° and >1750°C into cubic zirconia solid solution and yttria C -type solid solution, respectively. The extent of the cubic zirconia and yttria C -type solid solution fields was also redetermined. By incorporating the known tetragonal-cubic zirconia transition temperature and the liquidus temperatures in the system, a new tentative phase diagram is given for the system ZrO2-Y2O3.  相似文献

Subsolidus phase relations in the low-Y2O3 portion of the system ZrO2-Y2O3 were studied using DTA with fired samples and X-ray phase identification and lattice parameter techniques with quenched samples. Approximately 1.5% Y2O3 is soluble in monoclinic ZrO2, a two-phase monoclinic solid solution plus cubic solid solution region exists to ∼7.5% Y2O3 below ∼500°C, and a two-phase tetragonal solid solution plus cubic solid solution exists from ∼1.5 to 7.5% Y2O3 from ∼500° to ∼1600°C. At higher Y2O3 compositions, cubic ZrO2 solid solution occurs.  相似文献

A high-purity stoichiometric mullite precursor was obtained by hydrolysis of the alkoxides Al(OC3H7)3 and Si(OC2H2)4. Fully sintered mullite ceramics can be prepared from sol-gel powders by sintering them at 1600°C for 4 h in air with the addition of 15 to 20 Vol% ZrO2 or 1 to 3 mol% Y2O3 or both. Introduction of 1 to 3 mol% Y2O3 aids the retention of tetragonal ZrO2; the volume fraction of t -ZrO2 retained increases with increasing Y2O3 content. The maximum t -ZrO2 retained reaches 34% in a matrix of synthetic mullite with 3 mol% Y2O3, but most of this t -ZrO2 does not undergo stress-induced transformation during grinding.  相似文献

Composites of Al2O3 (A) and cubic ZrO2 (Z) (8 mol% Y2O3) (with c -ZrO2 volume fractions ranging from O to 1) were fabricated by pressureless sintering of mechanically mixed powders. The microstructures of the AZ composites were duplex, with the grains of both phases exhibiting similar size. Room-temperature mechanical properties including Young's modulus (determined from elastic wave velocity measurements), strength and toughness (by indentation-strength-in-bending), and Vickers microhardness were evaluated for the full range of compositions. All properties exhibited a linear decrease with increasing c -ZrO2 content, and no R -curve behavior was seen in any of the composite compositions. Fracture morphology, observed from cracks emanating from microhardness indentations, changed from essentially intergranular for the tougher Al2O3 to transgranular for c -ZrO2, with AZ composites exhibiting mixed morphology.  相似文献

The phase diagram for the system ZrO2-Y2O3 was redetermined. The extent of the fluorite-type ZrO2-YzO3 solid solution field was determined with a high-temperature X-ray furnace, precise lattice parameter measurements, and a hydrothermal technique. Long range ordering occurred at 40 mol% Y2O3 and the corresponding ordered phase was Zr3Y4OL12. The compound has rhombohedra1 symmetry (space group R 3), is isostructural with UY6Ol2 and decomposes above 1250±50°C. The results indicate that the eutectoid may occur at a temperature <400°C at a composition between 20 and 30 mol% Y2O3 Determination of the liquidus line indicated a eutectic at 83± 1 mol% Y2O3 and a peritectic at 76 ± 1 mol% Y2O3.  相似文献

In a recent work, 1 we have reported the optimization of the spark plasma sintering (SPS) parameters to obtain dense nanostructured 3Y-TZP ceramics. Following this, the present work attempts to answer some specific issues: (a) whether ZrO2-based composites with ZrB2 reinforcements can be densified under the optimal SPS conditions for TZP matrix densification (b) whether improved hardness can be obtained in the composites, when 30 vol% ZrB2 is incorporated and (c) whether the toughness can be tailored by varying the ZrO2–matrix stabilization as well as retaining finer ZrO2 grains. In the present contribution, the SPS experiments are carried out at 1200°C for 5 min under vacuum at a heating rate of 600 K/min. The SPS processing route enables retaining of the finer t -ZrO2 grains (100–300 nm) and the ZrO2–ZrB2 composite developed exhibits optimum hardness up to 14 GPa. Careful analysis of the indentation data provides a range of toughness values in the composites (up to 11 MPa·m1/2), based on Y2O3 stabilization in the ZrO2 matrix. The influence of varying yttria content, t -ZrO2 transformability, and microstructure on the properties obtained is discussed. In addition to active contribution from the transformation-toughening mechanism, crack deflection by hard second phase brings about appreciable increment in the toughness of the nanocomposites.  相似文献

The pseudoternary system ZrO2-Y2O3-Cr2O3 was studied at 1600°C in air by the quenching method. Only one intermediate compound, YCrO3, was observed on the Y2O3−Cr2O3 join. ZrO2 and Y2O3 formed solid solutions with solubility limits of 47 and 38 mol%, respectively. The apex of the compatibility triangle for the cubic ZrO2, Cr2O3, and YCrO3 three-phase region was located at =17 mol% Y2O3 (83 mol% ZrO2). Below 17 mol% Y2O3, ZrO2 solid solution coexisted with Cr2O3. Cr2O3 appears to be slightly soluble in ZrO2(ss).  相似文献

Aqueous mixtures of zirconium acetate and aluminum nitrate were pyrolyzed and crystallized to form a metastable solid solution, Zr1- x Al x O2− x /2 ( x < 0.57). The initial, metastable phase partitions at higher temperatures to form two metastable phases, viz., t −ZrO2+γ-Al2O3 with a nano-scale microstructure. The microstructural observations associated with the γ- →α-Al2O3 phase transformation in the t -ZrO2 matrix are reported for compositions containing 10, 20, and 40 mol% A12O3. During this phase transformation, the α-Al2O3 grains take the form of a colony of irregular, platelike grains, all with a common crystallographic orientation. The plates contain ZrO2 inclusions and are separated by ZrO2 grains. The volume fraction of A12O3 and the heat treatment conditions influence the final microstructure. At lower volume fractions of A12O3, the colonies coarsen to single, irregular plates, surrounded by polycrystalline ZrO2. Interpenetrating microstructures produced at high volume fractions of A12O3 exhibit very little grain growth for periods up to 24 h at 1400°C.  相似文献

In the ZrO2-Cr2O3 system, metastable t -ZrO2 solid solutions containing up to 11 mol% Cr2O3 crystallize at low temperatures from amorphous materials prepared by the hydrazine method. The lattice parameter c decreases linearly from 0.5149 to 0.5077 nm with increased Cr2O3 content, whereas the lattice parameter a is a constant value ( a = 0.5077 nm) regardless of the starting composition. At higher temperatures, transformation (decomposition) of the solid solutions proceeds in the following way: t (ss)→ t (ss) + m + Cr2O3→ m + Cr2O3. Above 11 mol% Cr2O3 addition, c-ZrO2 phases are formed in the presence of Cr2O3. The t -ZrO2 solid solution powders have been characterized for particle size, shape, and surface area. They consist of very fine particles (15–30 nm) showing thin platelike morphology. Dense ZrO2(3Y)-Cr2O3 composite ceramics (∼99.7% of theoretical) with an average grain size of 0.3 μm have been fabricated by hot isostatic pressing for 2 h at 1400°C and 196 MPa. Their fracture toughness increases with increased Cr2O3 content. The highest K Ic value of 9.5 MPa·;m1/2 is achieved in the composite ceramics containing 10 mol% Cr2O3.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of bending strength, fracture toughness, and Young's modulus of composite materials fabricated in the ZrO2 (Y2O3)-Al2O3 system were examined. The addition of A1203 enhanced the high-temperature strength. Isostatically hot-pressed, 60 wt% ZrO2 (2 mol% Y2O3)/40 wt% Al2O3 exhibited an extremely high strength, 1000 MPa, at 1000°C.  相似文献

Phase equilibria in the system ZrO2─InO1.5 have been investigated in the temperature range from 800° to 1700°C Up to 4 mol%, InO1.5 is soluble in t -ZrO2 at 1500°C. The martensitic transformation temperature m → t of ZrO2 containing InO1.5 is compared with that of ZrO2 solid solutions with various other trivalent ions with different ionic radii. The diffusionless c → t ' A phase transformation is discussed. Extended solid solubility from 12.4 ± 0.8 to 56.5 ± 3 mol% InO1.5 is found at 1700°C in the cubic ZrO2 phase. The eutectoid composition and temperature for the decomposition of c -ZrO2 solid solution into t -ZrO2+InO1.5 solid solutions were determined. A maximum of about 1 mol% ZrO2 is soluble in bcc InO1.5 phase. Metastable supersaturation of ZrO2 in bcc InO 1.5 and conditions for phase separation are discussed.  相似文献

Crystallization of an MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 sintered glass frit was studied. Heat treatment at 850° or 900°C caused initial crystallization of μ-cordierite and tetragonal ( t ) ZrO2. The t -ZrO2 crystallized with an irregular dendritic morphology and could be transformed to monoclinic ( m ) symmetry under certain conditions; the cordierite underwent the μ→α a transformation with extended annealing. Heat treatments at 1000°C caused crystallization of t -ZrO2 rods and spheroids in an α-cordierite matrix; these ZrO2 crystals, however, are resistant to transformation to m -ZrO2. The beneficial effects of ZrO2 on the fracture toughness of cordierite-based glass-ceramics are described.  相似文献

The phase equilibria in the zirconia-rich part of the system ZrO2−Yb2O3−Y2O3 were determined at 1200°, 1400°, and 1650°C. The stabilizing effects of Yb2O3 and Y2O3 were found to be quite similar with <10 mol% of either being necessary to fully stabilize the cubic fluorite-structure phase at 1200°C. The two binary ordered phases, Zr3Yb4O12 and Zr3Y4O12, are completely miscible at 1200°C. These were the only binary or ternary phases detected. The ionic conductivities of ternary specimens in this system were measured using the complex impedance analysis technique. For a given level of total dopant, the substitution of Yb2O3 for Y2O3 gives only minor increases in specimen conductivity.  相似文献

Cubic solid solutions in the Y2O3-Bi2O3 system with ∼25% Y2O3 undergo a transformation to a rhombohedral phase when annealed at temperatures ≤ 700°C. This transformation is composition-invariant and is thermally activated, and the product phase can propagate across matrix grain boundaries, indicating that there is no special crystallo-graphic orientation relationship between the product and the parent phases. Based on these observations, it is proposed that cubic → rhombohedral phase transformation in the Y2O3-Bi2O3 system is a massive transformation. Samples of composition 25% Y2O3-75% Bi2O3 with and without aliovalent dopants were annealed at temperatures ≤ 700°C for up to 10000 h. ZrO2 as a dopant suppressed while CaO and SrO as dopants enhanced the kinetics of phase transformation. The rate of cubic/rhombohedra1 interface migration (growth rate or interface velocity) was also similarly affected by the additions of dopants; ZrO2 suppressed while CaO enhanced the growth rate. Diffusion studies further showed that ZrO2 suppressed while CaO enhanced cation interdiffusion coefficient. These observations are rationalized on the premise that cation interstitials are more mobile compared to cation vacancies in cubic bismuth oxide. The maximum growth rate measured was ∼10−10 m/s, which is orders of magnitude smaller than typical growth rates measured in metallic alloys. This difference is explained in terms of substantially lower diffusion coefficients in these oxide systems compared to metallic alloys.  相似文献
