Carbon/Benzoxazine laminates with and without non-woven thermoplastic fibrous polyamide (PA) veils at the interlaminar regions were manufactured using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding (VARTM). The effect of the interlaminar thermoplastic veils on the Mode-I strain energy release rate (GIC), flexural stiffness, glass transition temperature (Tg) and water absorption behaviour was determined using two commercially available Benzoxazine resins. Despite an increase in the maximum moisture content, the veils greatly enhanced GIC by an increase in fibre bridging of PA fibres, with concurrent reductions in flexural stiffness. Water ingress resulted in large reductions in the Tg, although no significant change was observed due to the PA interlayers. Fibre bridging and fibre pull-out were the main mechanisms by which the veils assisted in resisting delamination. The presence of the water was observed to degrade mechanical properties due to a reduction in fibre/matrix interfacial strength, molecular degradation and plasticisation of the matrix.

Intralaminar and interlaminar fatigue crack growth behaviours under mode I loading were investigated with conventional and interlayer toughened unidirectional CFRP laminates. For intralaminar crack growth tests, initial defects were introduced using “intralaminar film insertion method”, in which a release film is inserted inside a single lamina prepreg. A fatigue test under a constant maximum energy release rate, Gmax, was carried out using DCB specimens. It was found that the intralaminar fatigue crack growth property of the interlayer toughened CFRP laminates was the same as that of the conventional CFRP laminates. For the interlayer toughened CFRP laminates, the Gmax with a given crack growth rate, da/dN, was much lower for intralaminar crack growth than for interlaminar crack growth. The da/dN-Gmax curve at zero crack extension, Δa = 0, which was estimated by extrapolating the da/dNa relationship, was not affected by bridging fibres, and most conservative for the interlayer toughened CFRP laminates.

Epoxy matrix toughened by polyethersulfone (PES) and polyamide (PA) microparticles was designed and the in-situ interlaminar toughened carbon fiber/epoxy composites were fabricated. Synergistic toughening effect of PES and PA on epoxy matrix was achieved due to semi-IPN structure of PES toughened matrix and uniform dispersion of PA microparticles. Shear-calender orientation of PA microparticles was found during prepreg processing and the microparticles remained on the surface of prepreg due to fiber-bundle filtration. The in-situ formed toughening interlayer of PA microparticles and interfacial bonding between PA and epoxy matrix were detected, which resulted in enhanced fracture toughness, CAI, and transverse flexural strength of the composite based on the PES/PA synergistically toughened matrix. SEM images of fracture morphology of the composite showed evidence of enhanced plastic deformation created by PES and PA, and crack deflection and bridging by PA microparticles.

MWNTs-EP/PSF (polysulfone) hybrid nanofibers with preferred orientation were directly electrospun onto carbon fiber/epoxy prepregs and interlaminar synchronously reinforced and toughened CFRP composites were successfully fabricated. With MWNTs-EP loading increasing, the oriented nanofibers were obtained accompanying with enhanced alignment of inner MWNTs-EP. Flexural properties and interlaminar shear strength of composites were improved with increasing MWNTs-EP loadings, whereas fracture toughness attained maximum at 10 wt% MWNTs-EP loading and then decreased. Based on these results, multiscale schematic modeling and mechanism schematic of hybrid nanofibers reinforced and toughened composites were suggested. Due to the preferred orientation of nanofibers, MWNTs-EP was inclined to align vertically to carbon fiber direction along the in-plane of interface layer. The proposed network structures, containing four correlative phases of MWNTs-EP/PSF sphere/carbon fiber/epoxy matrix, contributed to simultaneous improvement of strength and toughness of composites, which was realized by crack pinning, crack deflection, crack bridging and effective load transfer.

In this study, the effects of interleaved nanofibre veils on the Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (ILFT) of autoclave cured unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite laminates were investigated. Various electrospun nanofibre veils consisting of a range of different polymer types, fibre diameters and veil architectures were placed in the laminate mid-planes, which were subsequently subjected to double cantilever beam and end-notch flexure tests. It was found that the polymer type and veil areal weight were the most important factors contributing to laminate performance. A 4.5 g/m2 PA66 veil provided the best all-round performance with fracture toughness improvements of 156% and 69% for Mode I and Mode II, respectively.

The transverse tensile properties, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fibre/epoxy (CF/EP) laminates with 10 wt% and 20 wt% silica nanoparticles in matrix were investigated, and the influences of silica nanoparticle on those properties of CF/EP laminates were characterized. The transverse tensile properties and mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIC) increased with an increase in nanosilica concentration in the matrix resins. However, ILSS and the mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) decreased with increasing nanosilica concentration, especially for the higher nanosilica concentration (20 wt%). The reduced GIIC value is attributed to two main competing mechanisms; one is the formation of zipper-like pattern associated with matrix microcracks aligned 45° ahead of the crack tip, while the other is the shear failure of matrix. The ratio of GIIC/GIC decreased with the concentration of silica nanoparticles, comparable with similar CF/EP laminates with dispersed CNTs in matrix. Fractographic studies showed that interfacial failure between carbon fibre and epoxy resin occurred in the neat epoxy laminate, whereas a combination of interfacial failure and matrix failure occurred in the nanosilica-modified epoxy laminates, especially those with a higher nanosilica concentration (20 wt%).

In the present work, toughness of unfilled polyamide 6,6 (PA66) and short glass fibre reinforced polyamide 6,6 (SGFR-PA66) was investigated. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used with a single camera for in-plane displacement field measurement and then strain computation. The results allowed to extract the resistance curve for the PA66 and critical stress intensity factors, KIc, for the SGFR-PA66 with three glass fibre contents (15%, 30% and 50% (wt)) and under room temperature (20 °C). The tests were carried out on single edge notched tension (SENT) specimens. The DIC technique allowed to precise the spatial distribution of the local strains in a defined region including the crack tip at different steps of the loading. Scanning electron microscopy observations illustrated different damage mechanisms occurring in the studied composites: matrix crack, fibre–matrix interface failure and fibres pull out.

The potential use of carbon fibre laminate composites is limited by the weak out-of-plane properties, especially delamination resistance. The effect of incorporating titanium carbide to the mesophase pitch matrix precursor of carbon fibre laminate composites on interlaminar shear strength is studied both on carbonised and graphitised composites. The presence of titanium carbide modifies the optical texture of the matrix from domains to mosaics in those parts with higher concentrations and it contributes to an increase of fibre/matrix bonding. This fact produces an increase of the interlaminar shear strength of the material and changes the fracture mode.

Interlaminar shear properties of fibre reinforced polymer composites are important in many structural applications. Matrix modification is an effective way to improve the composite interlaminar shear properties. In this paper, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-F/diethyl toluene diamine system is used as the starting epoxy matrix. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reactive aliphatic diluent named n-butyl glycidyl ether (BGE) are employed to modify the epoxy matrix. Unmodified and modified epoxy resins are used for fabricating glass fibre reinforced composites by a hot-press process. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the glass fibre reinforced composites is investigated and the results indicate that introduction of MWCNT and BGE obviously enhances the ILSS. In particular, the simultaneous addition of 0.5 wt.% MWCNTs and 10 phr BGE leads to the 25.4% increase in the ILSS for the glass fibre reinforced composite. The fracture surfaces of the fibre reinforced composites are examined by scanning electron microscopy and the micrographs are employed to explain the ILSS results.

Double-cantilever-beam tests were applied to investigate the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fibre/epoxy laminates, in which the epoxy matrices were incorporated with rubber and silica nano-particles, either singly or jointly. It is shown that the toughness is improved owing to the presence of these nano-particles although nano-rubber is more effective than nano-silica. Further, by keeping the total particle weight percentage constant in epoxies (e.g., at 8 and 12 wt.%) filled with equal amount of nano-silica and nano-rubber, the interlaminar toughness values of the hybrid laminates are always higher than those with nano-silica filled epoxies but lower than those with nano-rubber filled matrices. Scanning electron microscopy examination of the delaminated surfaces of composite laminates filled with nano-particles revealed that cavitation of nano-rubber particles/void growth and debonding of nano-silica from epoxy matrix are responsible for the improved interlaminar toughness observed. It is also shown that the bulk toughness of nano-particle filled epoxies cannot be fully transferred to the interlaminar toughness of composite laminates, being limited by the constraint effect imposed by the carbon fibres. Finally, the role of fibre-bridging on the delaminated crack and hence delamination toughness is discussed.

This paper presents an experimental study into a new type of stitched fibre–polymer laminate that combines high interlaminar toughness with self-healing repair of delamination damage. Poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) filaments were stitched into carbon fibre/epoxy laminate to create a three-dimensional self-healing fibre system that also provides high fracture toughness. Double cantilever beam testing revealed that the stitched EMAA fibres increased the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (by ∼120%) of the laminate, and this reduced the amount of delamination damage that must subsequently be repaired by the self-healing stitches. The 3D stitched network was effective in delivering self-healing EMAA material extracted from the stitches into the damaged region, and this resulted in high recovery in the delamination fracture toughness (∼150% compared to the original material). The new self-healing stitching method provides high toughness which resists delamination growth while also having the functionality to repeatedly repair multiple layers of damage in epoxy matrix laminates.

Results are presented studying the contribution of particle toughening to impact damage resistance in carbon fibre reinforced polymer materials. Micro-focus X-ray computed tomography and synchrotron radiation computed laminography were used to provide a novel, multiscale approach for assessing impact damage. Thin (1 mm thick) composite plates containing either untoughened or particle-toughened resin systems were subjected to low velocity impact. Damage was assessed three-dimensionally at voxel resolutions of 0.7 μm and 4.3 μm using SRCL and μCT respectively; the former being an innovative approach to the laterally extended geometry of CFRP plates. Observations and measurements taken from μCT scans captured the full extent of impact damage on both material systems revealing an interconnected network of intra- and inter-laminar cracks. These lower resolution images reveal that the particle-toughened system suppresses delaminations with little effect on intralaminar damage. The higher resolution images reveal that the particles contribute to toughening by crack deflection and bridging.

An experimental study was conducted to improve the electrical conductivity of continuous carbon fibre/epoxy (CF/EP) composite laminate, with simultaneous improvement in mechanical performance, by incorporating nano-scale carbon black (CB) particles and copper chloride (CC) electrolyte into the epoxy matrix. CF/EP laminates of 65 vol.% of carbon fibres were manufactured using a vacuum-assisted resin infusion (VARI) technique. The effects of CB and the synergy of CB/CC on electrical resistivity, tensile strength and elastic modulus and fracture toughness (KIC) of the epoxy matrix were experimentally characterised, as well as the transverse tensile modulus and strength, Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of the CF/EP laminates. The results showed that the addition of up to 3.0 wt.% CB in the epoxy matrix, with the assistance of CC, noticeably improved the electrical conductivity of the epoxy and the CF/EP laminates, with mechanical performance also enhanced to a certain extent.

In the present work, fatigue crack growth tests of epoxy resin composite reinforced with silica particle under various R-ratios were carried out to investigate the effect of R-ratio on crack growth behavior and to discuss fatigue crack growth mechanism. Crack growth curves arranged by ΔK showed clear R-ratio dependence even under no crack closure, where the values of ΔKth were 0.82 and 0.33 MPa √m for R = 0.1 and 0.7 respectively. However, crack growth curves arranged by Kmax merged into almost one curve regardless of R-ratio, which indicated that crack growth behavior of the present composite was time-dependent. The value of Kmax,th were in the range from 0.78 to 1.12 MPa √m. In situ crack growth observation revealed the crack growth mechanism: micro-cracking near the interface between silica particle and resin matrix occurs ahead of a main crack and then micro-cracks coalesce with a main crack to grow. The crack path was in the epoxy matrix, which was consistent with the time-dependent crack growth.

Electrospun thermoplastic nanofibres were employed to toughen carbon/epoxy composites by direct deposition on carbon fibre fabrics, prior to resin impregnation and curing. The toughening mechanism was investigated with respect to the critical role of phase morphology on the toughening effect in carbon/epoxy composites. The influences of solubility in epoxy and melting characteristics of thermoplastics were studied towards their effects on phase structure and delamination resistance. For the three different thermoplastic nanofibre interlayers used in this work, i.e. poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibre interlayers, only PCL nanofibres produced toughening. Although cylinder-shaped fibrous macrophases existed in all three interlayer regions, only PCL nanofibres had polymerisation-induced phase separation with epoxy, forming ductile thermoplastic-rich particulate microphases on the delamination plane. These findings clearly show that the polymerisation-induced phase separation is critical to the interlayer toughening by thermoplastic nanofibres. An optimal concentration (15 wt.%) of PCL solution for electrospinning was found to produce composites with enhanced mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIC), stable crack growth and maintained flexural strength and modulus.

This paper discusses the bridging effect of fibres on mode I fatigue delamination growth in unidirectional and multidirectional polymer composite laminates based on a series of double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. From the results, there is sufficient evidence that fibre bridging can decrease the crack growth rate da/dN significantly, and using only one fatigue resistance curve to determine the delamination behavior in composite materials with large-scale fibre bridging may be inadequate. The bridging created in fatigue delamination is different from that of quasi-static delamination at the same crack length. So it is incorrect to use the resistance curve (R-curve) from quasi-static delamination tests to normalize fatigue delamination results.

The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness properties of vinyl ester-based composites reinforced with fibreglass manufactured by the advanced textile technologies of braiding, knitting, stitching and through-the-thickness weaving are assessed in comparison to a variety of traditional composites made from fibreglass such as unidirectional or woven rovings. The interlaminar fracture toughness (GIc) of braided and knitted composites are higher than traditional composites by factors of more than two and four, respectively. Toughening in these textile composites was caused by extensive crack branching as the interlaminar crack was forced to follow a tortuous path through the complex fibre architectures. The GIc values of the composites reinforced in the through-thickness direction by weaving or stitching were higher than traditional composites by factors of nearly two and three, respectively, with the main toughening mechanism being crack bridging by the through-thickness binder yarns/stitches. A review of Mode I interlaminar fracture data collected from papers shows that advanced textile techniques are capable of manufacturing composites with substantially improved delamination resistance.
