As biocomposites are highly sensitive to water absorption, the aim of this study was to compare the physical properties two biocomposites: (1) a flax/bio-based epoxy (Entropy SUPER SAP CLR/INS) and (2) a flax/polyurethane (HENKEL LOCTITE MAX 3). Both materials were reinforced with 14 layers of flax (TEXONIC twill 2 × 2) and manufactured using a resin transfer moulding process. Post-cured composite samples were aged at 90% RH and 30 °C for various periods of time up to 720 h. The results showed that both composites followed a Fickian diffusion behaviour. Water had a plasticizing effect on the composites and it changed their failure mode. This effect took longer to appear for the polyurethane composites. The chemical bonds between the hydroxyl groups of the fibres and the isocyanate lead to a stronger interface which improved the mechanical properties (short beam and compressive strengths) as compared to the flax/bio-epoxy composites.  相似文献

In this article, a flax fiber yarn was grafted with nanometer sized TiO2, and the effects on the tensile and bonding properties of the single fibers and unidirectional fiber reinforced epoxy plates were studied. The flax fiber yarn was grafted with nanometer sized TiO2 through immersion in nano-TiO2/KH560 suspensions under sonification. The measured grafting content of the nano-TiO2 ranged from 0.89 wt.% to 7.14 wt.%, dependent on the suspension concentration. With the optimized nano-TiO2 grafting content (∼2.34 wt.%), the tensile strength of the flax fibers and the interfacial shear strength to an epoxy resin were enhanced by 23.1% and 40.5%, respectively. The formation of Si–O–Ti and C–O–Si bonds and the presence of the nano-TiO2 particles on the fiber surfaces contributed to the property enhancements. Unidirectional flax fiber reinforced epoxy composite (Vf = 35.4%) plates prepared manually showed significantly enhanced flexural properties with the grafting of nano-TiO2.  相似文献

Composites of polypropylene, substitutable for a given application and reinforced with: Medium Density Fibreboard fibre (MDF) (40 wt%); flax (30 wt%); and glass fibre (20 wt%), were evaluated after 6 injection moulding and extrusion reprocessing cycles. Of the range of tensile, flexural and impact properties examined, MDF composites showed the best mean property retention after reprocessing (87%) compared to flax (72%) and glass (59%). After 1 reprocessing cycle the glass composite had higher tensile strength (56.2 MPa) compared to the MDF composite (44.4) but after 6 cycles the MDF was stronger (35.0 compared to 29.6 MPa for the glass composite). Property reductions were attributed to reduced fibre length. MDF fibres showed the lowest reduction in fibre length between 1 and 6 cycles (39%), compared to glass (51%) and flax (62%). Flax fibres showed greater increases in damage (cell wall dislocations) with reprocessing than was shown by MDF fibres.  相似文献

This work studies the possibility of compounding natural fibres (flax) into engineering plastics (PA6 and PB6) and comparing the results with counterpart glass fibre composites. The problem in compounding is the difficulty to compound the fibres with such polymers of high melting temperatures without decomposing the natural fibre thermally. Preliminary experiments are tried to define the possible processing window using the kneader namely temperature, compounding time and shear rate. Fibre content is tried in range of 0–50 wt.% with 10% step. The mixing temperature covers the range around the melting temperature ‘Tm’ [Tm−20, Tm+20]°C. The use of pre-melting temperature in compounding would utilise the energy evolving by fibres mutual rubbing. Compounding time is optimised at the minimum level. Shearing rate is tried at 25, 50, 75 and 100 rpm. Optimum conditions are defined to be 210–230 °C and 200–210 °C for PBT and PA6 respectively. Shearing rate is also defined to lie within 25–50 rpm.Two different additives of non-organic mineral and organic phosphate flame retardants are tried with the prepared composites either alone or in combination with each other. The loading of flame retardants is limited to 20 wt.% in order to leave a space for natural fibres as well as the polymer and to keep in turn the overall composite mechanical properties. A mix of 1:1 ratio between the both types of retardants is needed to reach V0 flame retardation level. Mechanical properties are even improved 30% in E-modulus and 4% in strength with respect to composites without flame retardants. However, the injection moulding is reported to be difficult because of the high viscosity and the parameters should be optimised regarding the desired flame retardance level and the required mechanical properties as well as keeping the fibres not damaged.  相似文献

Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) have the capacity to return large strains by external stimuli. Among various SMPs, shape-memory epoxy has received considerable attention because of its superior mechanical and thermal properties as well as excellent shape-memory performance. In this study, short glass fibre-reinforced shape-memory hydro-epoxy composites are developed to improve further the mechanical property of shape-memory epoxy resin. The thermomechanical and shape-memory properties of the developed composite materials are investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis, bend test and shape recovery test. The results indicate that the glass modulus and bend strength of the developed composite materials initially increase and then slightly decrease with increasing short glass fibre content. The glass transition temperature of the developed composite materials does not change with increasing short glass fibre. When the short glass fibre content is less than 4.5 wt.%, full recovery can be observed after only several minutes at different temperatures. The shape-memory property of the composite materials is not affected greatly. However, when the short glass fibre content is more than 4.5 wt.%, the material would be destroyed after deformation.  相似文献

Flax Acrodur biocomposites are elaborated with an innovative flax reinforcement consisting of long technical fibers unidirectionally arranged without any weft and twist. The fibers cohesion is performed by using a new process consisting by reactivating the pectin cement. A polyester thermoset matrix (Acrodur) is used to impregnate the flax reinforcement and to produce unidirectional (UD) laminates. The relationship between the main process variables (drying, fibers content, densification and curing parameters) and the properties of the biocomposites is investigated. The optimized biocomposites have an elastic modulus of 18 ± 1 GPa with 55% wt.% flax fiber content and a low density of 0.93 g/cm3. The thermal stability of the developed biocomposites is also investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). DMA results show a slight change of the storage modulus in a range of temperature from 23 °C to 160 °C. The appropriate processing parameters for the biocomposites are established. The developed flax tapes reinforced Acrodur biocomposites have a potential to be integrated for automotive applications thanks to their high stiffness/weight ratio and environmental advantages.  相似文献

Composites based on short Agave fibres (untreated and alkali treated) reinforced epoxy resin using three different fibre lengths (3 mm, 7 mm and 10 mm length) are prepared by using hand lay up and compression mould technique. The materials were characterized in terms of tensile, compressive, flexural, impact, water absorption properties and machinability behaviour. All mechanical tests showed that alkali treated fibre composites withstand more fracture strain than untreated fibre composites. As evidenced by the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests, the thermo-mechanical properties of the composite with alkali treated Agave fibre were considerably good as alkali treatment had facilitated more sites of fibre resin interface. The machinability and atomic force microscope (AFM) studies were carried out to analyze the fibre–matrix interaction in untreated and alkali treated Agave fibre–epoxy composites.  相似文献

The lack of data related to durability is one major challenge that needed to be addressed prior to the widespread acceptance of natural fibre reinforced polymer composites for engineering applications. In this work, the combined effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and water spraying on the mechanical properties of flax fabric reinforced epoxy composite was investigated to assess the durability performance of this composite used for civil engineering applications. Specimens fabricated by hand lay-up process were exposed in an accelerated weathering chamber for 1500 h. Tensile and three-point bending tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to analyse the microstructures of the composites. In addition, the durability performance of flax/epoxy composite was compared with synthetic (glass and carbon) and hybrid fibre reinforced composites. The test results show that the tensile strength/modulus of the weathered composites decreased 29.9% and 34.9%, respectively. The flexural strength/modulus reduced 10.0% and 10.2%, respectively. SEM study confirmed the degradation in fibre/matrix interfacial bonding after exposure. Comparisons with other composites implies that flax fabric/epoxy composite has potential to be used for civil engineering applications when taking its structural and durability performance into account. Proper treatments to enhance its durability performance will make it more comparable to synthetic fibre reinforced composites when considering as construction building materials.  相似文献

Endless rayon fibres (Cordenka®) were used to reinforce polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt.% nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) to create truly green hierarchical composites. Unidirectional (UD) composites with 50–55% fibre volume fraction were produced using a solvent-free continuous wet powder impregnation method. The composites exhibit ductile failure behaviour with a strain-to-failure of more than 10% albeit using a very brittle matrix. Improvements at a model composite level were translated into higher mechanical properties of UD hierarchical composites. The Young’s moduli of rayon fibre-reinforced (NFC-reinforced) PHB composites were about 15 GPa. The tensile and flexural strength of hierarchical PHB composites increased by 15% and 33% as compared to the rayon fibre-reinforced neat PHB composites. This suggests that incorporation of NFC into the PHB matrix binds the rayon fibres, which does affect the load transfer between the constituents resulting in composites with better mechanical properties.  相似文献

Cellulose nanofibers–reinforced PVA biocomposites were prepared from peanut shell by chemical–mechanical treatments and impregnation method. The composite films were optically transparent and flexible, showed high mechanical and thermal properties. FE-SEM images showed that the isolated fibrous fragments had highly uniform diameters in the range of 15–50 nm and formed fine network structure, which is a guarantee of the transparency of biocomposites. Compared to that of pure PVA resin, the modulus and tensile strength of prepared nanocomposites increased from 0.6 GPa to 6.0 GPa and from 31 MPa to 125 MPa respectively with the fiber content as high as 80 wt%, while the light transmission of the composite only decreased 7% at a 600 nm wavelength. Furthermore, the composites exhibited excellent thermal properties with CTE as low as 19.1 ppm/K. These favorable properties indicated the high reinforcing efficiency of the cellulose nanofibers isolated from peanut shell in PVA composites.  相似文献

PLA/hemp co-wrapped hybrid yarns were produced by wrapping PLA filaments around a core composed of a 400 twists/m and 25 tex hemp yarn (Cannabis sativa L) and 18 tex PLA filaments. The hemp content varied between 10 and 45 mass%, and the PLA wrapping density around the core was 150 and 250 turns/m. Composites were fabricated by compression moulding of 0/90 bidirectional prepregs, and characterised regarding porosity, mechanical strength and thermal properties by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Mechanical tests showed that the tensile and flexural strengths of the composites markedly increased with the fibre content, reaching 59.3 and 124.2 MPa when reinforced with 45 mass% fibre, which is approximately 2 and 3.3 times higher compared to neat PLA. Impact strength of the composites decreased initially up to 10 mass% fibre; while higher fibre loading (up to 45 mass%) caused an increase in impact strength up to 26.3 kJ/m2, an improvement of about 2 times higher compared to neat PLA. The composites made from the hybrid yarn with a wrapping density of 250 turns/m showed improvements in mechanical properties, due to the lower porosity. The fractured surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy to study the fibre/matrix interface.  相似文献

Composites based on polystyrene and natural rubber at a ratio of 85/15 were prepared by melt mixing with nylon-6 fibres using an internal mixer. The loading of short nylon-6 fibre, untreated and resorcinol formaldehyde latex (RFL)-treated, was varied from 0 to 3 wt.%. Tensile and flexural test samples were punched out from sheets and tested to study the variation of mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties. The tensile behaviour of the composite has been determined at three different strain rates (4.1 × 10−4 s−1, 2 × 10−3 s−1 and 2 × 10−2 s−1). Both the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composite increased with strain rate. The tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus increased with the increase in fibre content up to 1 wt.%, above which there was a significant deterioration in the properties. The RFL-treated fibre composites showed improved mechanical properties compared to the untreated one. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed that the storage modulus of the composite with RFL-treated fibre was better compared to the untreated one. The fibre–matrix morphology of the tensile fractured specimens was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results suggested that the RFL treatment of nylon fibre promoted adhesion to the natural rubber phase of the blend, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the composite.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of pectin and hemicellulose removal from hemp fibres on the mechanical properties of hemp fibre/epoxy composites. Pectin removal by EDTA and endo-polygalacturonase (EPG) removed epidermal and parenchyma cells from hemp fibres and improved fibre separation. Hemicellulose removal by NaOH further improved fibre surface cleanliness. Removal of epidermal and parenchyma cells combined with improved fibre separation decreased composite porosity factor. As a result, pectin removal increased composite stiffness and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). Hemicellulose removal increased composite stiffness, but decreased composite UTS due to removal of xyloglucans. In comparison of all fibre treatments, composites with 0.5% EDTA + 0.2% EPG treated fibres had the highest tensile strength of 327 MPa at fibre volume content of 50%. Composites with 0.5% EDTA + 0.2% EPG  10% NaOH treated fibres had the highest stiffness of 43 GPa and the lowest porosity factor of 0.04.  相似文献

The microstructure of flax fibres can be considered as a laminate with layers reinforced by cellulose fibrils. During a single fibre tensile test the S2 layer is subjected to shear. At room temperature, natural fibres contain water absorbed in the cell-walls. This paper examines the influence of this water at two scales: on the tensile behaviour of the flax fibres and on unidirectional plies of flax reinforced epoxy. Drying (24 h at 105 °C) is shown to reduce both failure stress and failure strain significantly. Analysis of normal stresses at the accomodation threshold provides an estimation of the shear strength of secondary cell walls as 45 MPa for fibres containing 6.4% by weight of water and only 9 MPa for dried fibres. Results from tensile tests on unidirectional flax/epoxy composites, reinforced by as-received and dried fibres, confirm the influence of drying on strength properties.  相似文献

This paper reports the accelerated thermal ageing behaviors of pure epoxy resin and 3-D carbon fiber/epoxy braided composites. Specimens have been aged in air at 90 °C, 110 °C, 120 °C, 130 °C and 180 °C. Microscopy observations and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry analyses revealed that the epoxy resin oxidative degradation only occurred within the surface regions. The surface oxidized layer protects inner resin from further oxidation. Both the resin degradation and resin stiffening caused by post-curing effects will influence the compression behaviors. For the braided composite, the matrix ageing is the main ageing mode at temperatures lower than glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the pure epoxy resin, while the fiber/matrix interface debonding could be observed at the temperatures higher than Tg, such as the temperature of 180 °C. The combination of matrix degradation and fiber/resin interface cracking leads to the continuous reduction of compressive behaviors.  相似文献

Mechanical properties of aligned long harakeke fibre reinforced epoxy with different fibre contents were evaluated. Addition of fibre was found to enhance tensile properties of epoxy; tensile strength and Young’s modulus increased with increasing content of harakeke fibre up to 223 MPa at a fibre content of 55 wt% and 17 GPa at a fibre content of 63 wt%, respectively. The flexural strength and flexural modulus increased to a maximum of 223 MPa and 14 GPa, respectively, as the fibre content increased up to 49 wt% with no further increase with increased fibre content. The Rule of Mixtures based model for estimating tensile strength of aligned long fibre composites was also developed assuming composite failure occurred as a consequence of the fracture of the lowest failure strain fibres taking account porosity of composites. The model was shown to have good accuracy for predicting the strength of aligned long natural fibre composites.  相似文献

Tetrapod-shaped zinc oxide (T-ZnO) whiskers and boron nitride (BN) flakes were employed to improve the thermal conductivity of phenolic formaldehyde resin (PF). A striking synergistic effect on thermal conductivity of PF was achieved. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the PF composite is as high as 1.96 W m−1 K−1 with 30 wt.% BN and 30 wt.% T-ZnO, which is 6.8 times higher than that of neat PF, while its electrical insulation is maintained. With 30 wt.% BN and 30 wt.% T-ZnO, the flexural strength of the composite is 312.9% higher than that of neat PF, and 56.2% higher that of the PF composite with 60 wt.% BN. The elongation at break is also improved by 51.8% in comparison with that of the composite with 60 wt.% BN. Such a synergistic effect results from the bridging of T-ZnO whiskers between BN flakes facilitating the formation of effective thermal conductance network within PF matrix.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to study the behavior of E-glass fiber unsaturated polyester composites, subjected to moderate and high temperatures. The obtained results show that the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of the resin and the composite change with the rise of the temperature. A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the thermal degradation of the composite occurs in two steps: the first between 130 and 200 °C and the second between 250 and 440 °C.The characterization of the resin and the composite, after heating, revealed that at moderate temperatures (lower than 100 °C) an improvement of the properties of materials is observed. For high temperatures but lower than the temperature of decomposition (Td), the mechanical strength of the resin does seem to be very affected, even improved for certain cases. For these temperatures, the composite presents some fractures of the fiber–matrix interfaces, which causes losses in strength and ductility.When the temperature reaches the temperature of decomposition (Td), a fall of the mechanical properties was recorded for both resin and composite.  相似文献

The ablation, mechanical and thermal properties of vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) (Pyrograf III™ Applied Sciences, Inc.)/phenolic resin (SC-1008, Borden Chemical, Inc.) composites were evaluated to determine the potential of using this material in solid rocket motor nozzles. Composite specimens with varying VGCF loadings (30–50% wt.) including one sample with ex-rayon carbon fiber plies were prepared and exposed to a plasma torch for 20 s with a heat flux of 16.5 MW/m2 at approximately 1650°C. Low erosion rates and little char formation were observed, confirming that these materials were promising for rocket motor nozzle materials. When fiber loadings increased, mechanical properties and ablative properties improved. The VGCF composites had low thermal conductivities (approximately 0.56 W/m-K) indicating they were good insulating materials. If a 65% fiber loading in VGCF composite could be achieved, then ablative properties are projected to be comparable to or better than the composite material currently used on the Space Shuttle Reusable Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM).  相似文献

A study on mechanical properties of soil buried kenaf fibre reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites is presented in this paper. Kenaf bast fibre reinforced TPU composites were prepared via melt-mixing method using Haake Polydrive R600 internal mixer. The composites with 30% fibre loading were prepared based on some important parameters; i.e. 190 °C for reaction temperature, 11 min for reaction time and 400 rpm for rotating speed. The composites were subjected to soil burial tests where the purpose of these tests was to study the effect of moisture absorption on the mechanical properties of the composites. Tensile and flexural properties of the composites were determined before and after the soil burial tests for 20, 40, 60 and 80 days. The percentages of both moisture uptake and weight gain after soil burial tests were recorded. Tensile strength of kenaf fibre reinforced TPU composite dropped to ∼16.14 MPa after 80 days of soil burial test. It was also observed that there was no significant change in flexural properties of soil buried kenaf fibre reinforced TPU composite specimens.  相似文献
