Service-Oriented Semantic Interoperability Technologies and Standards

Service-Oriented Software Engineering (SOSE) presents new challenges; in particular, how to promote interoperability and cooperation among loosely-coupled service resources. This is critical for service resource sharing and for implementing on-demand services. This paper discusses key technologies of service virtualization, including encapsulation of service interoperability (for available resources); ontology-based Role, Goal, Process, and Service (RGPS) metamodeling (for interoperable aggregation and organization of virtualization services); registration and repository management of Metamodel Framework for Interoperability (MFI) (for virtualization service management); and virtualization service ontology and its represented association with RGPS. Latest progress of the MFI and ISO standards is also discussed.     

Using MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 for personalizing video

As multimedia content has proliferated over the past several years, users have begun to expect that content be easily accessed according to their own preferences. One of the most effective ways to do this is through using the MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards, which can help address the issues associated with designing a video personalization and summarization system in heterogeneous usage environments. This three-tier architecture provides a standards-compliant infrastructure that, in conjunction with our tools, can help select, adapt, and deliver personalized video summaries to users. In extending our summarization research, we plan to explore semantic similarities across multiple simultaneous news media sources and to abstract summaries for different viewpoints. Doing so will allow us to track a semantic topic as it evolves into the future. As a result, we should be able to summarize news repositories into a smaller collection of topic threads.

MPEG-21: The 21st century multimedia framework

The lack of interoperable (and thus standardized) solutions is stalling the deployment of advanced multimedia packaging and distribution applications although most of the individual technologies are indeed already present. This motivated MPEG (ISO/IEC JTCl SC29 WGI I) in June 2000 to start working on the definition of enabling normative technology for the multimedia applications of the 21st century: MPEG-21 "Multimedia Framework." MPEG-21's approach is to define a framework to support transactions that are interoperable and highly automated, specifically taking into account digital rights management (DRM) requirements and targeting multimedia access and delivery using heterogeneous networks and terminals. This article first outlines the context and background of the MPEG-21 initiative. Then, an overview of MPEG-21 technology is given. Subsequently, it is discussed how MPEG-21 can provide solutions for universal multimedia access (UMA). UMA is also one of the use cases that has led to the creation of a new part in MPEG-21 dealing with digital item adaptation. Finally, this article concludes with an overview of MPEG-21 related activities and an outlook on future developments.
