This paper investigates flowshop scheduling problems with a general exponential learning effect, i.e., the actual processing time of a job is defined by an exponent function of the total weighted normal processing time of the already processed jobs and its position in a sequence, where the weight is a position-dependent weight. The objective is to minimize the makespan, the total (weighted) completion time, the total weighted discounted completion time, and the sum of the quadratic job completion times, respectively. Several simple heuristic algorithms are proposed in this paper by using the optimal schedules for the corresponding single machine problems. The tight worst-case bound of these heuristic algorithms is also given. Two well-known heuristics are also proposed for the flowshop scheduling with a general exponential learning effect.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate a time-dependent learning effect in a flowshop scheduling problem. We assume that the time-dependent learning effect of a job was a function of the total normal processing time of jobs scheduled before the job. The following objective functions are explored: the makespan, the total flowtime, the sum of weighted completion times, the sum of the kth power of completion times, and the maximum lateness. Some heuristic algorithms with worst-case analysis for the objective functions are given. Moreover, a polynomial algorithm is proposed for the special case with identical processing time on each machine and that with an increasing series of dominating machines, respectively. Finally, the computational results to evaluate the performance of the heuristics are provided.  相似文献

Scheduling with learning effects has attracted growing attention of the scheduling research community. A recent survey classifies the learning models in scheduling into two types, namely position-based learning and sum-of-processing-times-based learning. However, the actual processing time of a given job drops to zero precipitously as the number of jobs increases in the first model and when the normal job processing times are large in the second model. Motivated by this observation, we propose a new learning model where the actual job processing time is a function of the sum of the logarithm of the processing times of the jobs already processed. The use of the logarithm function is to model the phenomenon that learning as a human activity is subject to the law of diminishing return. Under the proposed learning model, we show that the scheduling problems to minimize the makespan and total completion time can be solved in polynomial time. We further show that the problems to minimize the maximum lateness, maximum tardiness, weighted sum of completion times and total tardiness have polynomial-time solutions under some agreeable conditions on the problem parameters.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the weighted sum of makespan and total completion time in a permutation flowshop where the processing times are supposed to vary according to learning effects. The processing time of a job is a function of the sum of the logarithms of the processing times of the jobs already processed and its position in the sequence. We present heuristic algorithms, which are modified from the optimal schedules for the corresponding single machine scheduling problem and analyze their worst-case error bound. We also adopt an existing algorithm as well as a branch-and-bound algorithm for the general m-machine permutation flowshop problem. For evaluation of the performance of the algorithms, computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems.  相似文献

In traditional scheduling problems, the processing time for the given job is assumed to be a constant regardless of whether the job is scheduled earlier or later. However, the phenomenon named “learning effect” has extensively been studied recently, in which job processing times decline as workers gain more experience. This paper discusses a bi-criteria scheduling problem in an m-machine permutation flowshop environment with varied learning effects on different machines. The objective of this paper is to minimize the weighted sum of the total completion time and the makespan. A dominance criterion and a lower bound are proposed to accelerate the branch-and-bound algorithm for deriving the optimal solution. In addition, the near-optimal solutions are derived by adapting two well-known heuristic algorithms. The computational experiments reveal that the proposed branch-and-bound algorithm can effectively deal with problems with up to 16 jobs, and the proposed heuristic algorithms can yield accurate near-optimal solutions.  相似文献

This work studies the scheduling problem where a set of jobs are available for processing in a no-wait and separate setup two-machine flow shop system with a single server. The no-wait constraint requires that the operations of a job have to be processed continuously without waiting between two machines. The setup time is incurred and attended by a single sever which can perform one setup at a time. The performance measure considered is the total completion time. The problem is strongly NP-hard. Optimal solutions for several restricted cases and some properties for general case are proposed. Both the heuristic and the branch and bound algorithms are established to tackle the problem. Computational experiments indicate that the heuristic and the branch and bound algorithm are superior to the existing ones in term of solution quality and number of branching nodes, respectively.  相似文献

This paper develops and compares different local search heuristics for the two-stage flow shop problem with makespan minimization as the primary criterion and the minimization of either the total flow time, total weighted flow time, or total weighted tardiness as the secondary criterion. We investigate several variants of simulated annealing, threshold accepting, tabu search, and multi-level search algorithms. The influence of the parameters of these heuristics and the starting solution are empirically analyzed. The proposed heuristic algorithms are empirically evaluated and found to be relatively more effective in finding better quality solutions than the existing algorithms.Scope and purposeTraditional research to solve multi-stage scheduling problems has focused on single criterion. However, in industrial scheduling practices, managers develop schedules based on multi-criteria. Scheduling problems involving multiple criteria require significantly more effort in finding acceptable solutions and hence have not received much attention in the literature. This paper considers one such multiple criteria scheduling problem, namely, the two-machine flow shop problem where the primary criterion is the minimization of makespan and the secondary criterion is one of the three most popular performance measures, namely, the total flow time, total weighted flow time, or total weighted tardiness. Based on the principles of local search, development of heuristic algorithms, that can be adapted for several multi-criteria scheduling problems, is discussed. Using the example of the two-machine flow shop problem with secondary criterion, computational experiments are used to evaluate the utility of the proposed algorithms for solving scheduling problems with a secondary criterion.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a two-machine flow shop scheduling problem with effects of deterioration and learning. By the effects of deterioration and learning, we mean that the processing time of a job is a function of its execution starting time and its position in a sequence. The objective is to find a sequence that minimizes the total completion time. Optimal solutions are obtained for some special cases. For the general case, several dominance properties and some lower bounds are derived, which are used to speed up the elimination process of a branch-and-bound algorithm. A heuristic algorithm is also proposed, which is shown by computational experiments to perform effectively and efficiently in obtaining near-optimal solutions.  相似文献

Recently, Biskup [2] classifies the learning effect models in scheduling environments into two types: position-based and sum-of-processing-time-based. In this paper, we study scheduling problem with sum-of-logarithm-processing-time-based and position-based learning effects. We show that the single machine scheduling problems to minimize the makespan and the total completion time can both be solved by the smallest (normal) processing time first (SPT) rule. We also show that the problems to minimize the maximum lateness, the total weighted completion times and the total tardiness have polynomial-time solutions under agreeable WSPT rule and agreeable EDD rule. In addition, we show that m-machine permutation flowshop problems are still polynomially solvable under the proposed learning model.  相似文献

Scheduling a Single Server in a Two-machine Flow Shop   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We study the problem of scheduling a single server that processes n jobs in a two-machine flow shop environment. A machine dependent setup time is needed whenever the server switches from one machine to the other. The problem with a given job sequence is shown to be reducible to a single machine batching problem. This result enables several cases of the server scheduling problem to be solved in O(n log n) by known algorithms, namely, finding a schedule feasible with respect to a given set of deadlines, minimizing the maximum lateness and, if the job processing times are agreeable, minimizing the total completion time. Minimizing the total weighted completion time is shown to be NP-hard in the strong sense. Two pseudopolynomial dynamic programming algorithms are presented for minimizing the weighted number of late jobs. Minimizing the number of late jobs is proved to be NP-hard even if setup times are equal and there are two distinct due dates. This problem is solved in O(n 3) time when all job processing times on the first machine are equal, and it is solved in O(n 4) time when all processing times on the second machine are equal. This study addresses the problem of minimizing the total weighted tardiness on a single-machine with a position-based learning effect. Several dominance properties are established to develop branch and bound algorithm and a lower bound is provided to derive the optimal solution. In this note, we consider the machine scheduling problems with the effects of deterioration and learning. In this model, job processing times are defined by functions of their starting times and positions in the sequence. The scheduling objectives are makespan (weighted) sum of completion times and maximum lateness. It is shown that even with the introduction of deterioration and learning effect to job processing times, several single machine problems and several flow shop problems remain polynomially solvable, respectively.  相似文献

The single-machine scheduling problem with truncated sum-of-processing-times-based learning effect and past-sequence-dependent job delivery times is considered. Each job’s delivery time depends on its waiting time of processing. For some regular objective functions, it is proved that the problems can be solved by the smallest processing time first rule. In this article, we consider a single machine scheduling problem with a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs. By the effects of time-dependent learning and deterioration, we mean that the job processing time is defined by a function of its starting time and total normal processing time of jobs in front of it in the sequence. The objective is to determine an optimal schedule so as to minimize the total completion time. This problem remains open for the case of ?1?a?a denotes the learning index; we show that an optimal schedule of the problem is V-shaped with respect to job normal processing times. Three heuristic algorithms utilising the V-shaped property are proposed, and computational experiments show that the last heuristic algorithm performs effectively and efficiently in obtaining near-optimal solutions.  相似文献

This paper considers two-machine open shop problems with secondary criteria where the primary criterion is the minimization of makespan and the secondary criterion is the minimization of the total flow time, total weighted flow time, or total weighted tardiness time. In view of the strongly NP-hard nature of these problems, two polynomially solvable special cases are given and constructive heuristic algorithms based on insertion techniques are developed. A strongly connected neighborhood structure is derived and used to develop effective iterative heuristic algorithms by incorporating iterative improvement, simulated annealing and multi-start procedures. The proposed insertion and iterative heuristic algorithms are empirically evaluated by solving problem instances with up to 80 jobs.  相似文献
