Suspended single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have advantages in mechanical resonators and highly sensitive sensors. Large‐scale fabrication of suspended SWNTs array devices and uniformity among SWNTs devices remain a great challenge. This study demonstrates an effective, fast, and wafer‐scale technique to fabricate suspended SWNT arrays, which is based on a dynamic motion of silver liquid to suspend and align the SWNTs between the prefabricated palladium electrodes in high temperature annealing treatment. Suspended, strained, and aligned SWNTs are synthesized on a 2 × 2 cm2 substrate with an average density of 10 tubes per micrometer. Under the optimal conditions, almost all SWNTs become suspended. A promising formation model of suspended SWNTs is established. The Kelvin four‐terminal resistance measurement shows that these SWNT array devices have extreme low contact resistance. Meanwhile, the suspended SWNT array field effect transistors are fabricated by selective etching of metallic SWNTs using electrical breakdown. This method of large‐scale fabrication of suspended architectures pushes the study of nanoscale materials into a new stage related to the electrical physics and industrial applications.  相似文献

“After a certain high level of technical skill is achieved, science and art tend to coalesce in aesthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientists are always artists as well.” said Albert Einstein. Currently, photographic images bridge the gap between microfluidic/lab‐on‐a‐chip devices and art. However, the microfluidic chip itself should be a form of art. Here, novel vibrant epoxy dyes are presented in combination with a simple process to fill and preserve microfluidic chips, to produce microfluidic art or art‐on‐a‐chip. In addition, this process can be used to produce epoxy dye patterned substrates that preserve the geometry of the microfluidic channels—height within 10% of the mold master. This simple approach for preserving microfluidic chips with vibrant, colorful, and long‐lasting epoxy dyes creates microfluidic chips that can easily be visualized and photographed repeatedly, for at least 11 years, and hence enabling researchers to showcase their microfluidic chips to potential graduate students, investors, and collaborators.  相似文献

Air suspension and alignment are fundamental requirements to make the best use of nanowires' unique properties; however, satisfying both requirements is very challenging due to the mechanical instability of air‐suspended nanowires. Here, a perfectly aligned air‐suspended nanowire array called “nanolene” is demonstrated, which has a high mechanical stability owing to a C‐channel‐shaped cross‐section of the nanowires. The excellent mechanical stability is provided through geometrical modeling and finite element method simulations. The C‐channel cross‐section can be realized by top‐down fabrication procedures, resulting in reliable demonstrations of the nanolenes with various materials and geometric parameters. The fabrication process provides large‐area uniformity; therefore, nanolene can be considered as a 2D planar platform for 1D nanowire arrays. Thanks to the high mechanical stability of the proposed nanolene, perfectly aligned air‐suspended nanowire arrays with an unprecedented length of 1 mm (aspect ratio ≈5100) are demonstrated. Since the nanolene can be used in an energy‐efficient nanoheater, two energy‐stringent sensors, namely, an air‐flow sensor and a carbon monoxide gas sensor, are demonstrated. In particular, the gas sensor achieves sub‐10 mW operations, which is a requirement for application in mobile phones. The proposed nanolene will pave the way to accelerate nanowire research and industrialization by providing reliable, high‐performance nanowire devices.  相似文献

Cellular microenvironments are generally sophisticated, but crucial for regulating the functions of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). Despite tremendous effort in this field, the correlation between the environmental factors—especially the extracellular matrix and soluble cell factors—and the desired cellular functions remains largely unknown because of the lack of appropriate tools to recapitulate in vivo conditions and/or simultaneously evaluate the interplay of different environment factors. Here, a combinatorial platform is developed with integrated microfluidic channels and nanofibers, associated with a method of high‐content single‐cell analysis, to study the effects of environmental factors on stem cell phenotype. Particular attention is paid to the dependence of hPSC short‐term self‐renewal on the density and composition of extracellular matrices and initial cell seeding densities. Thus, this combinatorial approach provides insights into the underlying chemical and physical mechanisms that govern stem cell fate decisions.  相似文献

The present work reports the first demonstration of straightforward fabrication of monolithic unibody lab‐on‐a‐chip (ULOCs) integrating bioactive micrometric 3D scaffolds by means of multimaterial stereolithography (SL). To this end, a novel biotin‐conjugated photopolymer is successfully synthesized and optimally formulated to achieve high‐performance SL‐printing resolution, as demonstrated by the SL‐fabrication of biotinylated structures smaller than 100 µm. By optimizing a multimaterial single‐run SL‐based 3D‐printing process, such biotinylated microstructures are incorporated within perfusion microchambers whose excellent optical transparency enables real‐time optical microscopy analyses. Standard biotin‐binding assays confirm the existence of biotin‐heads on the surfaces of the embedded 3D microstructures and allow to demonstrate that the biofunctionality of biotin is not altered during the SL‐printing, thus making it exploitable for further conjugation with other biomolecules. As a step forward, an in‐line optical detection system is designed, prototyped via SL‐printing and serially connected to the perfusion microchambers through customized world‐to‐chip connectors. Such detection system is successfully employed to optically analyze the solution flowing out of the microchambers, thus enabling indirect quantification of the concentration of target interacting biomolecules. The successful application of this novel biofunctional photopolymer as SL‐material enables to greatly extend the versatility of SL to directly fabricate ULOCs with intrinsic biofunctionality.  相似文献

There is an urgent demand to develop earth‐abundant electrocatalysts for efficient and durable water oxidation under mild conditions. A nickel‐substituted cobalt‐borate nanowire array is developed on carbon cloth (Ni‐Co‐Bi/CC) via oxidative polarization of NiCo2S4 nanoarray in potassium borate (K‐Bi). As a bimetallic electrocatalyst for water oxidation, such Ni‐Co‐Bi/CC is superior in catalytic activity and durability in 0.1 m K‐Bi (pH: 9.2), with a turnover frequency of 0.33 mol O2 s?1 at the overpotential of 500 mV and nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency. To drive a geometrical catalytic current density of 10 mA cm?2, it only needs overpotential of 388 mV, 34 mV less than that for Co‐Bi/CC, outperforming reported non‐noble‐metal catalysts operating under benign conditions. Notably, its activity is maintained over 80 000 s. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the O* to OOH* conversion is the rate‐determining step and Ni substitution decreases the free energy on Co‐Bi from 2.092 to 1.986 eV.  相似文献

A novel method of fabricating large‐scale horizontally aligned ZnO microrod arrays with controlled orientation and periodic distribution via combing technology is introduced. Horizontally aligned ZnO microrod arrays with uniform orientation and periodic distribution can be realized based on the conventional bottom‐up method prepared vertically aligned ZnO microrod matrix via the combing method. When the combing parameters are changed, the orientation of horizontally aligned ZnO microrod arrays can be adjusted (θ = 90° or 45°) in a plane and a misalignment angle of the microrods (0.3° to 2.3°) with low‐growth density can be obtained. To explore the potential applications based on the vertically and horizontally aligned ZnO microrods on p‐GaN layer, piezo‐phototronic devices such as heterojunction LEDs are built. Electroluminescence (EL) emission patterns can be adjusted for the vertically and horizontally aligned ZnO microrods/p‐GaN heterojunction LEDs by applying forward bias. Moreover, the emission color from UV‐blue to yellow‐green can be tuned by investigating the piezoelectric properties of the materials. The EL emission mechanisms of the LEDs are discussed in terms of band diagrams of the heterojunctions and carrier recombination processes.  相似文献

Stem cells have attracted increasing research interest in the field of regenerative medicine because of their unique ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages. However, controlling stem cell differentiation efficiently and improving the current destructive characterization methods for monitoring stem cell differentiation are the critical issues. To this end, multifunctional graphene–gold (Au) hybrid nanoelectrode arrays (NEAs) to: (i) investigate the effects of combinatorial physicochemical cues on stem cell differentiation, (ii) enhance stem cell differentiation efficiency through biophysical cues, and (iii) characterize stem cell differentiation in a nondestructive real‐time manner are developed. Through the synergistic effects of physiochemical properties of graphene and biophysical cues from nanoarrays, the graphene‐Au hybrid NEAs facilitate highly enhanced cell adhesion and spreading behaviors. In addition, by varying the dimensions of the graphene‐Au hybrid NEAs, improved stem cell differentiation efficiency, resulting from the increased focal adhesion signal, is shown. Furthermore, graphene‐Au hybrid NEAs are utilized to monitor osteogenic differentiation of stem cells electrochemically in a nondestructive real‐time manner. Collectively, it is believed the unique multifunctional graphene‐Au hybrid NEAs can significantly advance stem‐cell‐based biomedical applications.  相似文献

Cell separation is a key step in many biomedical research areas including biotechnology, cancer research, regenerative medicine, and drug discovery. While conventional cell sorting approaches have led to high‐efficiency sorting by exploiting the cell's specific properties, microfluidics has shown great promise in cell separation by exploiting different physical principles and using different properties of the cells. In particular, label‐free cell separation techniques are highly recommended to minimize cell damage and avoid costly and labor‐intensive steps of labeling molecular signatures of cells. In general, microfluidic‐based cell sorting approaches can separate cells using “intrinsic” (e.g., fluid dynamic forces) versus “extrinsic” external forces (e.g., magnetic, electric field, etc.) and by using different properties of cells including size, density, deformability, shape, as well as electrical, magnetic, and compressibility/acoustic properties to select target cells from a heterogeneous cell population. In this work, principles and applications of the most commonly used label‐free microfluidic‐based cell separation methods are described. In particular, applications of microfluidic methods for the separation of circulating tumor cells, blood cells, immune cells, stem cells, and other biological cells are summarized. Computational approaches complementing such microfluidic methods are also explained. Finally, challenges and perspectives to further develop microfluidic‐based cell separation methods are discussed.  相似文献

Bone metastasis occurs at ≈70% frequency in metastatic breast cancer. The mechanisms used by tumors to hijack the skeleton, promote bone metastases, and confer therapeutic resistance are poorly understood. This has led to the development of various bone models to investigate the interactions between cancer cells and host bone marrow cells and related physiological changes. However, it is challenging to perform bone studies due to the difficulty in periodic sampling. Herein, a bone‐on‐a‐chip (BC) is reported for spontaneous growth of a 3D, mineralized, collagenous bone tissue. Mature osteoblastic tissue of up to 85 µm thickness containing heavily mineralized collagen fibers naturally formed in 720 h without the aid of differentiation agents. Moreover, co‐culture of metastatic breast cancer cells is examined with osteoblastic tissues. The new bone‐on‐a‐chip design not only increases experimental throughput by miniaturization, but also maximizes the chances of cancer cell interaction with bone matrix of a concentrated surface area and facilitates easy, frequent observation. As a result, unique hallmarks of breast cancer bone colonization, previously confirmed only in vivo, are observed. The spontaneous 3D BC keeps the promise as a physiologically relevant model for the in vitro study of breast cancer bone metastasis.  相似文献
