In this paper, a novel algorithm for oriental face detection is presented to locate multiple faces in color scenery images. A binary skin color map is first obtained by applying the skin/non-skin color classification algorithm. Then, color regions corresponding to the facial and non-facial areas in the color map are separated with a clustering-based splitting algorithm. Thereafter, an elliptic face model is devised to crop the real human faces through the shape location procedure. Last, local thresholding technique and a statistic-based verification procedure are utilized to confirm the human faces. The proposed detection algorithm combines both the color and shape properties of faces. In this work, the color span of human face can be expanded as wilder as possible to cover different faces by using the clustering-based splitting algorithm. Experimental results reveal the feasibility of our proposed approach in solving face detection problem.

We propose a face detection method based on skin color likelihood via a boosting algorithm which emphasizes skin color information while deemphasizing non-skin color information. A stochastic model is adapted to compute the similarity between a color region and the skin color. Both Haar-like features and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) features are utilized to build a cascaded classifier. The boosted classifier is implemented based on skin color emphasis to localize the face region from a color image. Based on our experiments, the proposed method shows good tolerance to face pose variation and complex background with significant improvements over classical boosting-based classifiers in terms of total error rate performance.

Techniques for color-based tracking of faces or hands often assume a static skin model yet skin color, as measured by a camera, can change when lighting changes. Therefore, for robust skin pixel detection, an adaptive skin color model must be employed. We demonstrate a chromaticity-based constraint to select training pixels in a scene for updating a dynamic skin color model under changing illumination conditions. The method makes use of the ‘skin locus’ of a camera, that is, the area in chromaticity space where skin chromaticity under various lighting and camera calibration conditions is observed. Skin color models derived from the technique are compared with that derived by a common spatial constraint and is shown to be more consistent with manually extracted ground truth skin model per frame even as localization errors increase. The technique is applied to color-based face tracking in indoor and outdoor videos and is shown to succeed more often than other color model adaptation techniques.
