In order to meet the energy requirements, there has been growing interest in alternative fuels like biodiesels, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, biogas, hydrogen and producer gas to provide a suitable diesel oil substitute for internal combustion engines. Vegetable oils present a very promising alternative to diesel oil since they are renewable and have similar properties. Vegetable oils offer almost the same power output with slightly lower thermal efficiency when used in diesel engine [Srivastava A, Prasad R. Triglycerides-based diesel fuels. Research in this direction with edible oils have yielded encouraging results, but their use as fuel for diesel engine has limited applications due to higher domestic requirement [Scholl Kyle W, Sorenson Spencer C. Combustion Analysis of soyabean oil methyl ester in a direct injection diesel engine. SAE 930934, 1993. [8]; Nwafor OMI. Effect of advanced injection timing on the performance of rapeseed oil in diesel engines. Int J Renew Energy 2000;21:433–44. [9]; Nwafor OMI. The effect of elevated fuel inlet temperature on performance of diesel engine running on neat vegetable oil at constant speed conditions. Renew Energy 2003;28:171–81. [10]]. In view of this, Honge oil (Pongamia Pinnata Linn) being non-edible oil could be regarded as an alternative fuel for CI engine applications. The viscosity of Honge oil is reduced by transesterification process to obtain Honge oil methyl ester (HOME).Gasification is a process in which solid biomass is converted into a mixture of combustible gases, which complete their combustion in an IC engine. Hence, producer gas can act as a promising alternative fuel, especially for diesel engines by substituting considerable amount of diesel fuels. Downdraft moving bed gasifiers coupled with IC engine are a good choice for moderate quantities of available biomass, up to 500 kW of electric power. Hence, bioderived gas and vegetable liquids appear more attractive in view of their friendly environmental nature. Since vegetable oils produce higher smoke emissions, dual fuel operation could be adopted for improving their performance.  相似文献

Energy is an essential requirement for economic and social development of any country. Sky rocketing of petroleum fuel costs in present day has led to growing interest in alternative fuels like vegetable oils, alcoholic fuels, CNG, LPG, Producer gas, biogas in order to provide a suitable substitute to diesel for a compression ignition (CI) engine. The vegetable oils present a very promising alternative fuel to diesel oil since they are renewable, biodegradable and clean burning fuel having similar properties as that of diesel. They offer almost same power output with slightly lower thermal efficiency due to their lower energy content compared to diesel. Utilization of producer gas in CI engine on dual fuel mode provides an effective approach towards conservation of diesel fuel. Gasification involves conversion of solid biomass into combustible gases which completes combustion in a CI engines. Hence the producer gas can act as promising alternative fuel and it has high octane number (100–105) and calorific value (5–6 MJ/Nm3). Because of its simpler structure with low carbon content results in substantial reduction of exhaust emission. Downdraft moving bed gasifier coupled with compression ignition engine are a good choice for moderate quantities of available mass up to 500 kW of electrical power. Hence bio-derived gas and vegetable liquids appear more attractive in view of their friendly environmental nature. Experiments have been conducted on a single cylinder, four-stroke, direct injection, water-cooled CI engine operated in single fuel mode using Honge, Neem and Rice Bran oils. In dual fuel mode combinations of Producer gas and three oils were used at different injection timings and injection pressures.Dual fuel mode of operation resulted in poor performance at all the loads when compared with single fuel mode at all injection timings tested. However, the brake thermal efficiency is improved marginally when the injection timing was advanced. Decreased smoke, NOx emissions and increased CO emissions were observed for dual fuel mode for all the fuel combinations compared to single fuel operation.  相似文献

The methyl ester of rice bran oil (MERBO), known as bio‐diesel, is receiving increasing attention as an alternative fuel for compression ignition (CI) engine. Although MERBO has several advantages over fossil diesel, in the present scenario, the use of MERBO is restricted due to its high cost. Therefore, use of producer gas to fuel a CI engine along with MERBO seems to be the most interesting option for substitution of fossil diesel. In the present study MERBO was partially replaced by producer gas. The performance of CI engine was compared with fossil diesel partially replaced by producer gas in the CI engine. It was found that MERBO blended with producer gas give higher brake thermal efficiency than fossil diesel producer gas mixture. The addition of producer gas to MERBO has significantly reduced NOx, but it also increases the concentration of other pollutants. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A naturally aspirated multi cylinder diesel genset (DG) was operated successfully with mixed fuels (fossil-diesel (FD), refined rice bran oil (RRBO) and producer gas from a wood gasifier). Performance of DG set in FD, dual fuel mode (FD+RRBO in different proportion and FD+producer gas) and mixed fuels mode (with preheated blend of 75% RRBO+FD and producer gas) at different engine load conditions are presented in this paper. Performance of DG was evaluated in terms of specific energy consumption (SEC), brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas composition. Study revealed that blends containing up to 75% RRBO with FD could be used as engine fuel without any adverse effect on the engine. The blend of RRBO and FD was preheated to 60 °C before use in the compression ignition (CI) engine. In general, exhaust gas temperature and SEC increased in all the three modes compared to FD. However, break thermal efficiency decreased. It may be due to lower calorific value of RRBO and producer gas.It was observed that at 84% engine load having 18.4:1 compression ratio (CR) and operating in dual fuel mode (FD+producer gas), the concentration of pollutants like carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) reduced by 55%, 19.7%, 82% and 83%, respectively, while hydrocarbon (HC) increased by 67.2% as compared to FD. Similarly at 84% engine load having 17:1 CR and operating in dual fuel mode (FD+RRBO), the concentration of pollutant like CO, CO2 and HC reduced by 60%, 0.86% and 91%, respectively. However, NOx increased by 23.48% as compared to FD.In mixed fuel mode (preheated blends of RRBO+FD in the proportion of 3:1 and producer gas) at 84% engine load having 18.4:1 CR, the concentration of pollutants like HC, NO and NO2 reduced by 48.28%, 61.57% and 80.48%, respectively, while CO increased by 16.31% as compared to FD. In addition to the findings on environmental aspects, the study also proved that the diesel engine could be run safely in mixed fuel mode (53% producer gas, rest RRBO and FD at the ratio of 3:1 and heated at 60 °C).  相似文献

The present study tries to explore the potential of three different types of biodiesel viz. Rice bran oil methyl ester (RBME), Pongamia oil methyl ester (PME) and Palm oil methyl ester (POME) as pilot fuels for a biogas run dual fuel diesel engine designed for power generation. The results indicated that under dual fuel mode, RBME-biogas produced a maximum brake thermal efficiency of 19.97% in comparison to 18.4% and 17.4% respectively for PME-biogas and POME-biogas at 100% load. The emission study divulged that under dual fuel mode, on an average, there was an increase of CO emission by 25.74% and 32.58% for PME-biogas and POME-biogas, respectively in comparison to RBME-biogas. Furthermore, on an average, the HC emissions for PME-biogas and POME-biogas increased by 11.73% and 16.27%, respectively in comparison to RBME-biogas. On the other hand, on an average, there was a decrease in NOX emission by 5.8% and 14%, respectively for PME-biogas and POME-biogas respectively in comparison to RBME-biogas.  相似文献

The present work aims to investigate the consequences of pilot fuel (PF) multiple injections and hydrogen manifold injection (HMI) on the combustion and tailpipe gas characteristics of a common rail direct injection (CRDI) compression ignition (CI) engine operated on dual fuel (DF) mode. The CI engine can perform on a wide variety of fuels and under high pilot fuel (PF) pressure. Pilot fuel injection (PFI) is achieved at TDC, 5, 10, and 15ºCA before the top dead center (bTDC), and divided injection consists of injecting fuel in three different magnitudes on a time basis and PF is injected into the engine cylinder at a pressure of 600 bar. In this work, the hydrogen flow rate (HFR) was fixed at 8 lpm constant and producer gas was inducted without any restriction. The investigational engine setup has the ability to deliver a PF and hydrogen (H2) precisely in all operating circumstances using a separate electronic control unit (ECU). Results showed that diesel-hydrogen enriched producer gas (HPG) operation at maximum operating conditions provided amplified thermal efficiency by 4.01% with reduced emissions, except NOx levels, compared to biodiesel-HPG operation. Further, DiSOME with the multi-injection strategy of 60 + 20+20 and 50 + 25+25, lowered thermal efficiency by 4.8% and 9.12%, respectively compared to identical fuel combinations under a single injection scheme. However, reductions in NOx levels, cylinder pressure, and HRR were observed with a multi-injection scheme. It is concluded that multi-injection results in lower BTE, changes carbon-based emissions marginally, and decreases cylinder pressure and heat release rate than the traditional fuel injection method.  相似文献

The present study describes the emission analysis of different blends of karanja oil and diesel with producer gas in dual fuel mode using a twin-cylinder diesel engine in two cases of operations. In case 1, the above fuels are tested in single mode and in dual fuel mode operation at an optimum gas flow rate of 21.49 Kg/h under different load conditions. Similarly, in case 2 the same test fuels are used in dual fuel mode only at an optimum load of 10 kW under different gas flow rates. The study reveals that dual fuel operation of all test fuels shows lower smoke and oxide of nitrogen emissions compared to their single mode operation, whereas other emission parameters are on the higher side. However, all blended fuels show better emissions compared to diesel in both cases of operations.  相似文献

The Neem-oil methyl ester (NME) produced from transesterification of Neem-oil was mixed with diesel fuel in the share of 10%(N10) and 20%(N20) were used with varying flow rate of oxy-hydrogen gas (HHO) gas at 5%,10% and 15% energy share along with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in a 3.7 kW CI engine. Presence of fuel-borne oxygen in NME, facilitates increase in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) at high load related to neat diesel operation. Further the BTE was improved by introducing varying flow rate of HHO gas in order to maintain energy share of 5, 10 and 15% at all loads. The BTE was found as 33.80% and 35.40% for N20 + 10%HHO and N20 + 15%HHO compared to 31.5%, 30.4% and 29.4% for N20, N10 and Neat diesel fuel respectively. Significant emission reduction of CO, CO2, uHC and smoke opacity were observed during NME + HHO gas operation, but NOx emission was augmented which was controlled using EGR along with further improvement in the engine characteristics.  相似文献

Due to ever increasing use of conventional fuels and improper utilization of renewables, air pollution and GHG (Green House Gas) emissions are the primary areas of concern. Due to this, the world is now shifting interest towards the synthesis and use of alternate fuels; that can replace the conventional fuels. Present work focuses on an experimental investigation, which is carried out on two different biomass materials – sugarcane bagasse and carpentry waste in 1:1 ratio. Biomass samples were used to synthesize producer gas in a downdraft gasifier with a gas flow rate of 5.07 Nm3/h. Producer gas was blended with diesel and fired in a dual fuel CI engine. Engine performance was smooth while it was tested for six load variations for noise characteristics and various performance and emission parameters. A maximum reduction in diesel consumption by 45.7% and NOx emissions by 69.5% was reported with a slight increase (~3.4 dB) in the noise.  相似文献

In this current work, exhaustive research work is conducted in three phases, in the initial phase, WFO was used for producing WFO treated biomass and in the second phase, influence of PFIP and PFIT has been examined. Further in the successive phase, effect of hydrogen HMI, HPI and EGR on the combustion and emission characteristics of CRDI diesel engine operated on dual-fuel mode using DiSOME and PG combination is evaluated. In the current study, in a CRDI engine, PFIT was employed ranging from 0 to 15°CA bTDC and changed in steps of 5 and PFIP was used from 600 to 1000 bar and varied in successive steps of 200 bar. Further flow rate of hydrogen was kept 8 L/min constant and HMIT was employed in the range from TDC to 15°aTDC and changed in stages of 5. Correspondingly, HID was varied from 30 to 90°CA with 30°CA dwell and EGR was used in the range from 0 to 15% by vol. and varied in steps of 5. Outcome of the work showed that, DiSOME-PG operation with 10°bTDC PFIT, 800 bar PFIP, 10°aTDC of HMI, 60°CAHID and 5% EGR rate showed lower BTE by 5.8% and increased smoke levels by 10.8%, HC by 8.6%, CO by 6.5% and marginally decreased NOx by 6.4% was observed in comparison to the same fuel blend with zero EGR at 80% load. Further, marginally amplifiedID and CD with loweredCP and HRR has been noticed. Study revealed thatH2addition to low calorific value gas (PG), method of pilot fuel addition and EGR is affected dual fuel engine performance, but provided drastic reductions in smoke and NOx emissions.  相似文献

Energy is an essential prerequisite for economical and social growth of any country. Skyrocketing of petroleum fuel cost s in present day has led to growing interest in alternative fuels like CNG, LPG, Producer gas, Biogas in order to provide suitable substitute to diesel for a compression ignition engine. This paper discusses some experimental investigations on dual fuel operation of a 4 cylinder (turbocharged and intercooled) 62.5 kW gen-set diesel engine with hydrogen, producer gas (PG) and mixture of producer gas and hydrogen as secondary fuels. Results on brake thermal efficiency and emissions, namely, un-burnt hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and NOx are presented here. The paper also contains vital information relating to the performances of an engine at a wide range of load conditions with different gaseous fuel substitutions. When only hydrogen is used as secondary fuel, maximum increase in the brake thermal efficiency is 7% which is obtained with 20% of secondary fuel. When only producer gas is used as secondary fuel, maximum decrease in the brake thermal efficiency of 8% is obtained with 30% of secondary fuel. Compared to the neat diesel operation, proportion of un-burnt HC and CO increases, while, emission of NOx reduces in all Cases. On the other hand, when 40% of mixture of producer gas and hydrogen is used (in the ratio (60:40) as secondary fuel, brake thermal efficiency reduces marginally by 3%. Further, shortcoming of low efficiency at lower load condition in a dual fuel operation is removed when a mixture of hydrogen and producer gas is used as the secondary fuel at higher than 13% load condition. Based on the performance studied, a mixture of producer gas and hydrogen in the proportion of 60:40 may be used as a supplementary fuel for diesel conservation.  相似文献

The present study demonstrates the emission analysis of different blends of Karanja biodiesel and diesel with producer gas in dual fuel mode using a twin cylinder diesel engine for two cases of operations. In case 1, a test is carried out using the above test fuels both in single mode and dual fuel mode operation with a constant gas flow rate of 21.49 Kg/h under different load conditions. Similarly, in case 2, a test is performed at a constant load of 10 kW under different gas flow rates using the same test fuels in the dual fuel mode only. The study reveals that all blended fuels show better emissions compared to diesel in both cases of operations. Dual fuel mode operation of all tested fuels shows lower smoke and oxide of nitrogen emissions compared to their single mode operation under all load conditions, whereas other emission parameters are found to be on the higher side.  相似文献

Biofuels extracted from non-edible oil is sustainable and can be used as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. This study presents the performance, emission and combustion characteristic analysis by using simarouba oil (obtained from Simarouba seed) as an alternative fuel along with hydrogen and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in a compression ignition (CI) engine operating on dual fuel mode. Simarouba biofuel blend (B20) was prepared on volumetric basis by mixing simarouba oil and diesel in the proportion of 20% and 80% (v/v), respectively. Hydrogen gas was introduced at the flow rate of 2.67 kg/min, and EGR concentration was maintained at 30% of total air introduction. Performance, combustion and emission characteristics analysis were examined with biodiesel (B20), biodiesel with hydrogen substitution and biodiesel, hydrogen with EGR and were compared with neat diesel operation. Results indicate that BTE of the engine operating with biodiesel B20 was decreased when compared to neat diesel operation. However, introducing hydrogen along with B20 blend into the combustion chamber shows a slight increase in the BTE by 1%. NOx emission was increased to 18.13% with the introduction of hydrogen than that of base fuel (diesel) operation. With the introduction of EGR, there is a significant reduction in NOx emission due to decrease in in-cylinder temperature by 19.07%. A significant reduction in CO, CO2, and smoke emissions were also noted with the introduction of both hydrogen and EGR. The ignition delay and combustion duration were increased with the introduction of hydrogen, EGR with biodiesel than neat diesel operation. Hence, the proposed biodiesel B20 with H2 and EGR combination can be applied as an alternative fuel in CI engines.  相似文献

In this investigation, Mahua Oil Ethyl Ester was prepared by transesterification using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as catalyst and tested in a 4-stroke direct injection natural aspirated diesel engine. Tests were carried out at constant speed of 1500 rev/min at different brake mean effective pressures. Results showed that brake thermal efficiency of Mahua Oil Ethyl Ester (MOEE) was comparable with diesel and it was observed that 26.36% for diesel whereas 26.42% for MOEE. Emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen and Bosch smoke number were reduced around 58, 63, 12 and 70%, respectively, in case of MOEE compared to diesel. Based on this study, MOEE can be used a substitute for diesel in diesel engine.  相似文献

Transport vehicles greatly pollute the environment through emissions such as CO, CO2, NOx, SOx, unburnt or partially burnt HC and particulate emissions. Fossil fuels are the chief contributors to urban air pollution and major source of green house gases (GHGs) and considered to be the prime cause behind the global climate change. Biofuels are renewable, can supplement fossil fuels, reduce GHGs and mitigate their adverse effects on the climate resulting from global warming. This paper presents the results of performance and emission analyses carried out in an unmodified diesel engine fueled with Pongamia pinnata methyl ester (PPME) and its blends with diesel. Engine tests have been conducted to get the comparative measures of brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) and emissions such as CO, CO2, HC, NOx to evaluate the behaviour of PPME and diesel in varying proportions. The results reveal that blends of PPME with diesel up to 40% by volume (B40) provide better engine performance (BSFC and BSEC) and improved emission characteristics.  相似文献

With an alarming enlargement in vehicular density, there is a threat to the environment due to toxic emissions and depleting fossil fuel reserves across the globe. This has led to the perpetual exploration of clean energy resources to establish sustainable transportation. Researchers are continuously looking for the fuels with clean emission without compromising much on vehicular performance characteristics which has already been set by efficient diesel engines. Hydrogen seems to be a promising alternative fuel for its clean combustion, recyclability and enhanced engine performance. However, problems like high NOx emissions is seen as an exclusive threat to hydrogen fuelled engines. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), on the other hand, is known to overcome the aforementioned problem. Therefore, this study is conducted to study the combined effect of hydrogen addition and EGR on the dual fuelled compression ignition engine on a single cylinder diesel engine modified to incorporate manifold hydrogen injection and controlled EGR. The experiments are conducted for 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% loads with the hydrogen energy share (HES) of 0%, 10% and 30%. The EGR rate is controlled between 0%, 5% and 10%. With no substantial decrement in engine's brake thermal efficiency, high gains in terms of emissions are observed due to synergy between hydrogen addition and EGR. The cumulative reduction of 38.4%, 27.4%, 33.4%, 32.3% and 20% with 30% HES and 10% EGR is observed for NOx, CO2, CO, THC and PM, respectively. Hence, the combination of hydrogen addition and EGR is observed to be advantageous for overall emission reduction.  相似文献

With a specific end goal to take care of the worldwide demand for energy, a broad research is done to create alternative and cost effective fuel. The fundamental goal of this examination is to investigate the combustion, performance and emission characteristics of diesel engine using biodiesel blends enriched with HHO gas. The biodiesel blends are gotten by blending KOME obtained from transesterification of karanja oil in various proportions with neat diesel. The HHO gas is produced by the electrolysis of water in the presence of sodium bicarbonate electrolyte. The constant flow of HHO gas accompanied with biodiesel guarantees lessened brake specific fuel consumption by 2.41% at no load and 17.53% at full load with increased the brake thermal efficiency by 2.61% at no load and 21.67% at full load contrasted with neat diesel operation. Noteworthy decline in unburned hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, carbon-dioxide emissions and particulate matter with the exception of NOx discharge is encountered. The addition of EGR controls this hike in NOx with a slight decline in the performance characteristics. It is clear that the addition of HHO gas with biodiesel blends along with EGR in the test engine improved the overall characterization of engine.  相似文献

Honne oil methyl ester (HOME) is produced from a nonedible vegetable oil, namely, honne oil, available abundantly in India. It has remained as an untapped new possible source of alternative fuel that can be used for diesel engines. The present research is aimed at investigating experimentally the performance, exhaust emission, and combustion characteristics of a direct injection diesel engine (single cylinder, water cooled) typically used in agricultural sector over the entire load range when fuelled with HOME and diesel fuel blends, HM20 (20% HOME + 80% diesel fuel)–HM100. The properties of these blends are found to be comparable with diesel fuel conforming to the American and European standards. The combustion parameters of HM20 are found to be slightly better than neat diesel (ND). For other blend ratios, these combustion parameters deviated compared with ND. The performance (brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake‐specific fuel consumption, and exhaust gas temperature) of HM20 is better than ND. For other blend ratios, BTE is inferior compared with ND. The emissions (CO and SO) of HM20–HM100, throughout the entire load range, are dropped significantly compared with ND. Unburned hydrocarbon emissions of HM20–HM40, throughout the entire load range, is slightly decreased, whereas for other blend ratios, it is increased compared with ND. NOx emissions of HM20, throughout the entire load range, is slightly increased, whereas for other blend ratios, it is slightly decreased. The reductions in exhaust emissions together with increase in BTE made the blend HM20 a suitable alternative fuel for diesel fuel and thus could help in controlling air pollution. The effects of biodiesel (rapeseed methyl ester, RME) and different diesel/RME blends on the diesel engine NOx emissions, smoke, fuel consumption, engine efficiency, cylinder pressure and net heat release rate are analysed and presented. The combustion of RME as pure fuel or blended with diesel in an unmodified engine results in advanced combustion, reduced ignition delay and increased heat release rate in the initial uncontrolled premixed combustion phase. The increased in-cylinder pressure and temperature lead to increased NOx emissions while the more advanced combustion assists in the reduction of smoke compared to pure diesel combustion. The lower calorific value of RME results in increased fuel consumption but the engine thermal efficiency is not affected significantly. When similar percentages (% by volume) of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) are used in the cases of diesel and RME, NOx emissions are reduced to similar values, but the smoke emissions are significantly lower in the case of RME. The retardation of the injection timing in the case of pure RME and 50/50 (by volume) blend with diesel results in further reduction of NOx at a cost of small increases of smoke and fuel consumption.  相似文献

The urge for cleaner and greener sources of energy is rising day by day. Developed countries are already in process of shifting their energy needs from conventional sources to non-conventional/renewable/green sources of energy. These developed countries are also trying to incorporate developing countries to join the battle against global warming and pollution. Examples, of some non-conventional sources of energy are nuclear energy, wind energy etc. One of such cleaner energy source is hydrogen. The high calorific value, availability in abundance and cleaner nature of hydrogen makes it an appropriate substitute for conventional source of energy. An engine using gaseous hydrogen is in the process of being developed. This may revolutionize the battle against pollution and global warming. Use of hydrogen in a diesel engine working on dual-fuel mode has been the interest of many researchers. However utilization of hydrogen fuel changes the ignition delay, combustion duration, peak mean temperature, peak pressure and other combustion parameters change. In the present work, such research works are examined and analyzed in detail. It is also shown, amount of inducted hydrogen dictates many engine parameters such as engine power, torque etc. a separate section is dedicated to study different emissions from the improvised engine. Lastly, it will be clear from the discussion that introduction of gaseous hydrogen to a diesel engine working on dual fuel mode will have optimistic effect on environment.  相似文献
