Identification of atomic disorders and their subsequent control has proven to be a key issue in predicting, understanding, and enhancing the properties of newly emerging topological insulator materials. Here, we demonstrate direct evidence of the cation antisites in single-crystal SnBi2Te4 nanoplates grown by chemical vapor deposition, through a combination of sub-ångström-resolution imaging, quantitative image simulations, and density functional theory calculations. The results of these combined techniques revealed a recognizable amount of cation antisites between Bi and Sn, and energetic calculations revealed that such cation antisites have a low formation energy. The impact of the cation antisites was also investigated by electronic structure calculations together with transport measurement. The topological surface properties of the nanoplates were further probed by angle-dependent magnetotransport, and from the results, we observed a two-dimensional weak antilocalization effect associated with surface carriers. Our approach provides a pathway to identify the antisite defects in ternary chalcogenides and the application potential of SnBi2Te4 nanostructures in next-generation electronic and spintronic devices.

Triangular Ni(HCO3)2 nanosheets were synthesized via a template-free solvothermal method. The phase transition and formation mechanism were explored systematically. Further investigation indicated that the reaction time and pH have significant effects on the morphology and size distribution of the triangular Ni(HCO3)2 nanosheets. More interestingly, the resulting product had an ultra-thin structure and high specific surface area, which can effectively accelerate the charge transport during charge–discharge processes. As a result, the triangular Ni(HCO3)2 nanosheets not only exhibited high specific capacitance (1,797 F·g-1 at 5 A·g-1 and 1,060 F·g-1 at 50 A·g-1), but also showed excellent cycling stability with a high current density (~80% capacitance retention after 5,000 cycles at the current density of 20 A·g-1).

The assembly of hybrid nanomaterials has opened up a new direction for the construction of high-performance anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, we present a straightforward, eco-friendly, one-step hydrothermal protocol for the synthesis of a new type of Fe2O3-SnO2/graphene hybrid, in which zero-dimensional (0D) SnO2 nanoparticles with an average diameter of 8 nm and one-dimensional (1D) Fe2O3 nanorods with a length of ~150 nm are homogeneously attached onto two-dimensional (2D) reduced graphene oxide nanosheets, generating a unique point-line-plane (0D-1D-2D) architecture. The achieved Fe2O3-SnO2/graphene exhibits a well-defined morphology, a uniform size, and good monodispersity. As anode materials for LIBs, the hybrids exhibit a remarkable reversible capacity of 1,530 mA·g?1 at a current density of 100 mA·g?1 after 200 cycles, as well as a high rate capability of 615 mAh·g?1 at 2,000 mA·g?1. Detailed characterizations reveal that the superior lithium-storage capacity and good cycle stability of the hybrids arise from their peculiar hybrid nanostructure and conductive graphene matrix, as well as the synergistic interaction among the components.

T-Nb2O5/reduced graphene oxide nanohybrids were fabricated via the hydrothermal attachment of Nb2O5 nanowires to dispersed graphene oxide nanosheets followed by a high-temperature phase transformation. Electrochemical measurements showed that the nanohybrid anodes possessed enhanced reversible capacity and superior cycling stability compared to those of a pristine T-Nb2O5 nanowire electrode. Owing to the strong bonds between graphene nanosheets and T-Nb2O5 nanowires, the nanohybrids achieved an initial capacity of 227 mAh·g?1. Additionally, non-aqueous asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) were fabricated with the synthesized nanohybrids as the anode and activated carbon as the cathode. The 3 V Li-ion ASC with a LiPF6-based organic electrolyte achieved an energy density of 45.1 Wh·kg?1 at 715.2 W·kg?1. The working potential could be further enhanced to 4 V when a polymer ionogel separator (PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI/EMIMBF4) and formulated ionic liquid electrolyte were employed. Such a quasi-solid state ASC could operate at 60 °C and delivered a maximum energy density of 70 Wh·kg?1 at 1 kW·kg?1.

Iron oxides have attracted considerable interest as abundant materials for high-capacity Li-ion battery anodes. However, their fast capacity fading owing to poorly controlled reversibility of the conversion reactions greatly hinders their application. Here, a sandwich-structured nanocomposite of N-doped graphene and nearly monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles were developed as high-performance Li-ion battery anode. N-doped graphene serves as a conducting framework for the self-assembled structure and controls Fe3O4 nucleation through the interaction of N dopants, surfactant molecules, and iron precursors. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were well dispersed with a uniform diameter of ~15 nm. The unique sandwich structure enables good electron conductivity and Li-ion accessibility and accommodates a large volume change. Hence, it delivers good cycling reversibility and rate performance with a capacity of ~1,227 mA·h·g–1 and 96.8% capacity retention over 1,000 cycles at a current density of 3 A·g–1. Our work provides an ideal structure design for conversion anodes or other electrode materials requiring a large volume change.

Mixed transition metal oxides (MTMOs) have received intensive attention as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this work, we demonstrate a facile one-step water-bath method for the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) decorated Fe2(MoO4)3 (FMO) microflower composite (FMO/GO), in which the FMO is constructed by numerous nanosheets. The resulting FMO/GO exhibits excellent electrochemical performances in both LIBs and SIBs. As the anode material for LIBs, the FMO/GO delivers a high capacity of 1,220 mAh·g–1 at 200 mA·g–1 after 50 cycles and a capacity of 685 mAh·g–1 at a high current density of 10 A·g–1. As the anode material for SIBs, the FMO/GO shows an initial discharge capacity of 571 mAh·g–1 at 100 mA·g–1, maintaining a discharge capacity of 307 mAh·g–1 after 100 cycles. The promising performance is attributed to the good electrical transport from the intimate contact between FMO and graphene oxide. This work indicates that the FMO/GO composite is a promising anode for high-performance lithium and sodium storage.

Nanomaterials with electrochemical activity are always suffering from aggregations, particularly during the high-temperature synthesis processes, which will lead to decreased energy-storage performance. Here, hierarchically structured lithium titanate/nitrogen-doped porous graphene fiber nanocomposites were synthesized by using confined growth of Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) nanoparticles in nitrogen-doped mesoporous graphene fibers (NPGF). NPGFs with uniform pore structure are used as templates for hosting LTO precursors, followed by high-temperature treatment at 800 °C under argon (Ar). LTO nanoparticles with size of several nanometers are successfully synthesized in the mesopores of NPGFs, forming nanostructured LTO/NPGF composite fibers. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, such nanocomposite architecture offers effective electron and ion transport, and robust structure. Such nanocomposites in the electrodes delivered a high reversible capacity (164 mAh·g–1 at 0.3 C), excellent rate capability (102 mAh·g–1 at 10 C), and long cycling stability.

We report the facile, one-pot synthesis of 3-D urchin-like W18O49 nanostructures (U-WO) via a simple solvothermal approach. An excellent supercapacitive performance was achieved by the U-WO because of its large Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area (ca. 123 m2·g–1) and unique morphological and structural features. The U-WO electrodes not only exhibit a high rate-capability with a specific capacitance (Csp) of ~235 F·g–1 at a current density of 20 A·g–1, but also superior long-life performance for 1,000 cycles, and even up to 7,000 cycles, showing ~176 F·g–1 at a high current density of 40 A·g–1.

A highly active and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is critical for hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, three-dimensional Ni3S2@graphene@Co92S8 (Ni3S2@G@Co9S8), a sandwich-structured OER electrocatalyst, was grown in situ on nickel foam; it afforded an enhanced catalytic performance when highly conductive graphene is introduced as an intermediary for enhancing the electron transfer rate and stability. Serving as a free-standing electrocatalytic electrode, Ni3S2@G@Co9S8 presents excellent electrocatalytic activities for OER: A low onset overpotential (2 mA·cm?2 at 174 mV), large anode current density (10 mA·cm?2 at an overpotential of 210 mV), low Tafel slope (66 mV·dec?1), and predominant durability of over 96 h (releasing a current density of ~14 mA·cm?2 with a low and constant overpotential of 215 mV) in a 1 M KOH solution. This work provides a promising, cost-efficient electrocatalyst and sheds new light on improving the electrochemical performance of composites through enhancing the electron transfer rate and stability by introducing graphene as an intermediary.

Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) is one of the most important commercial thermoelectric materials. In recent years, the discovery of topologically protected surface states in Bi chalcogenides has paved the way for their application in nanoelectronics. Determination of the fracture toughness plays a crucial role for the potential application of topological insulators in flexible electronics and nanoelectromechanical devices. Using depth-sensing nanoindentation tests, we investigated for the first time the fracture toughness of bulk single crystals of Bi2Te3 topological insulators, grown using the Bridgman-Stockbarger method. Our results highlight one of the possible pitfalls of the technology based on topological insulators.

We report the preparation of nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide with embedded Fe3O4/Fe nanorings (FeNR@rGO) by chemical hydrothermal growth. We illustrate the use of these nanocomposites as novel electromagnetic wave absorbing materials. The electromagnetic wave absorption properties of the nanocomposites with different compositions were investigated. The preparation procedure and nanocomposite composition were optimized to achieve the best electromagnetic wave absorption properties. Nanocomposites with a GO:α-Fe2O3 mass ratio of 1:1 prepared by annealing in H2/Ar for 3 h exhibited the best properties. This nanocomposite sample (thickness = 4.0 mm) showed a minimum reflectivity of–23.09 dB at 9.16 GHz. The band range was 7.4–11.3 GHz when the reflectivity was less than–10 dB and the spectrum width was up to 3.9 GHz. These figures of merit are typically of the same order of magnitude when compared to the values shown by traditional ferric oxide materials. However, FeNR@rGO can be readily applied as a microwave absorbing material because the production method we propose is highly compatible with mass production standards.

Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) as important on-chip micropower sources have attracted considerable attention because of their unique and advantageous design for optimized maximum functionality within a minimized sized chip and excellent mechanical flexibility/stability in miniaturized portable electronic device applications. In this work, we report a novel, high-performance flexible integrated on-chip MSC based on hybrid nanostructures of reduced graphene oxide/Fe2O3 hollow nanospheres using a microelectronic photo-lithography technology combined with plasma etching technique. The unique structural design for on-chip MSCs enables high-performance enhancements compared with graphene-only devices, exhibiting high specific capacitances of 11.57 F·cm-3 at a scan rate of 200 mV·s-1 and excellent rate capability and robust cycling stability with capacitance retention of 92.08% after 32,000 charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, the on-chip MSCs exhibit superior flexibility and outstanding stability even after repetition of charge/discharge cycles under different bending states. As-fabricated highly flexible on-chip MSCs can be easily integrated with CdS nanowire-based photodetectors to form a highly compacted photodetecting system, exhibiting comparable performance to devices driven by conventional external energy storage units.

The rational design of earth-abundant catalysts with excellent water splitting activities is important to obtain clean fuels for sustainable energy devices. In this study, mixed transition metal oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogendoped carbon (denoted as AB2O4@NC) were developed using a one-pot protocol, wherein a metal–organic complex was adopted as the precursor. As a proof of concept, MnCo2O4@NC was used as an electrocatalyst for water oxidation, and demonstrated an outstanding electrocatalytic activity with low overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm?1 (η 10 = 287 mV), small Tafel slope (55 mV·dec?1), and high stability (96% retention after 20 h). The excellent electrochemical performance benefited from the synergistic effects of the MnCo2O4 nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon, as well as the assembled mesoporous nanowire structure. Finally, a highly stable all-solid-state supercapacitor based on MnCo2O4@NC was demonstrated (1.5% decay after 10,000 cycles).

Understanding charge transfer processes between graphene and functional materials is crucial from the perspectives of fundamental sciences and potential applications, including electronic devices, photonic devices, and sensors. In this study, we present the charge transfer behavior of graphene and amine-rich polyethyleneimine (PEI) upon CO2 exposure, which was significantly improved after introduction of hygroscopic polyethylene glycol (PEG) in humid air. By blending PEI and PEG, the number of protonated amine groups in PEI was remarkably increased in the presence of water molecules, leading to a strong electron doping effect on graphene. The presence of CO2 gas resulted in a large change in the resistance of PEI/PEG-co-functionalized graphene because of the dramatic reduction of said doping effect, reaching a maximum sensitivity of 32% at 5,000 ppm CO2 and an applied bias of 0.1 V in air with 60% relative humidity at room temperature. This charge transfer correlation will facilitate the development of portable graphene-based sensors for real-time gas detection and the extension of the applications of graphene-based electronic and photonic devices.

A topologically mediated synthesis of porous boron nitride aerogel has been experimentally and theoretically investigated for carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. Replacement of the carbon atoms in a precursor aerogel of graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes was achieved using an elemental substitution reaction, to obtain a boron and nitrogen framework. The newly prepared BN aerogel possessed a specific surface area of 716.56 m2/g and exhibited an unprecedented twentyfold increase in CO2 uptake over N2, adsorbing 100 cc/g at 273 K and 80 cc/g in ambient conditions, as verified by adsorption isotherms via the multipoint Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. Density functional theory calculations were performed to give hints on the mechanism of such high selectivity of CO2 over N2 adsorption in BN aerogel, which may be due to the interaction between the intrinsic polar nature of B–N bonds and the high quadrupole moment of CO2 over N2.

The geometric size and distribution of magnetic nanoparticles are critical to the morphology of graphene (GN) nanocomposites, and thus they can affect the capacity and cycling performance when these composites are used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). In this work, Fe3O4 nanorods were deposited onto fully extended nitrogen-doped GN sheets from a binary precursor in two steps, a hydrothermal process and an annealing process. This route effectively tuned the Fe3O4 nanorod size distribution and prevented their aggregation. The transformation of the binary precursor was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XPS analysis indicated the presence of N-doped GN sheets, and that the magnetic nanocrystals were anchored and uniformly distributed on the surface of the flattened N-doped GN sheets. As a high performance anode material, the structure was beneficial for electron transport and exchange, resulting in a large reversible capacity of 929 mA·h·g–1, high-rate capability, improved cycling stability, and higher electrical conductivity. Not only does the result provide a strategy for extending GN composites for use as LiB anode materials, but it also offers a route for the preparation of other oxide nanorods from binary precursors.

Regulating the selectivity of CO2 photoreduction is particularly challenging. Herein, we propose ideal models of atomic layers with/without element doping to investigate the effect of doping engineering to tune the selectivity of CO2 photoreduction. Prototypical ZnCo2O4 atomic layers with/without Ni-doping were first synthesized. Density functional theory calculations reveal that introducing Ni atoms creates several new energy levels and increases the density-of-states at the conduction band minimum. Synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy demonstrates that the band structures are suitable for CO2 photoreduction, while the surface photovoltage spectra demonstrate that Ni doping increases the carrier separation efficiency. In situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectra disclose that the CO2·? radical is the main intermediate, while temperature-programed desorption curves reveal that the ZnCo2O4 atomic layers with/without Ni doping favor the respective CO and CH4 desorption. The Ni-doped ZnCo2O4 atomic layers exhibit a 3.5-time higher CO selectivity than the ZnCo2O4 atomic layers. This work establishes a clear correlation between elemental doping and selectivity regulation for CO2 photoreduction, opening new possibilities for tailoring solar-driven photocatalytic behaviors.

Metal oxide/graphene nanocomposites are emerging as promising materials for developing room-temperature gas sensors. However, the unsatisfactory performances owing to the relatively low sensitivity, slow response, and recovery kinetics limit their applications. Herein, a highly sensitive and rapidly responding room-temperature NO2 gas sensor based on WO3 nanorods/sulfonated reduced graphene oxide (S-rGO) was prepared via a simple and cost-effective hydrothermal method. The optimal sensor response of the WO3/S-rGO sensor toward 20 ppm NO2 is 149% in 6 s, which is 4.7 times higher and 100 times faster than that of the corresponding WO3/rGO sensors. In addition, the sensor exhibits excellent reproducibility, selectivity, and extremely fast recovery kinetics. The mechanism of the WO3/S-rGO nanocomposite gas sensor is investigated in detail. In addition to the high transport capability of S-rGO as well as its excellent NO2 adsorption ability, the superior sensing performance of the S-rGO/WO3 sensor can be attributed to the favorable charge transfer occurring at the S-rGO/WO3 interfaces. We believe that the strategy of compositing a metal oxide with functionalized graphene provides a new insight for the future development of room-temperature gas sensors.

Rechargeable metal-iodine batteries are an emerging attractive electrochemical energy storage technology that combines metallic anodes with halogen cathodes. Such batteries using aqueous electrolytes represent a viable solution for the safety and cost issues associated with organic electrolytes. A hybrid-electrolyte battery architecture has been adopted in a lithium-iodine battery using a solid ceramic membrane that protects the metallic anode from contacting the aqueous electrolyte. Here we demonstrate an eco-friendly, low-cost zinc-iodine battery with an aqueous electrolyte, wherein active I2 is confined in a nanoporous carbon cloth substrate. The electrochemical reaction is confined in the nanopores as a single conversion reaction, thus avoiding the production of I3? intermediates. The cathode architecture fully utilizes the active I2, showing a capacity of 255 mAh·g?1 and low capacity cycling fading. The battery provides an energy density of ~ 151 Wh·kg?1 and exhibits an ultrastable cycle life of more than 1,500 cycles.

In this paper, we describe the facile and effective preparation of a series of cobalt-doped Fe3O4 nanocatalysts via chemical coprecipitation in an aqueous solution. The catalyst allowed the hydrogenation of chloronitrobenzenes to chloroanilines (CAs) to proceed at low temperatures in absolute water and at atmospheric pressure, resulting in approximately 100% yield and selectivity. Several factors that influence the yield of CAs were investigated. The results showed that the suitable dosage of the catalyst was ~10 mol.% of the substrate, and the optimal reaction time, reaction temperature, and reaction pressure were 20 min, 80 °C, and atmospheric pressure, respectively. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the CA yield was as high as 98.4%, and the nitro reduction rate reached 100%, which indicates the excellent selectivity of the homemade catalyst. This process also overcomes the environmental pollution harms associated with the traditional process.
