Gadolinium zirconate (GZ) is an attractive material for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). However, a single layer GZ coating has poor thermal cycling life compared to Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ). In this study, Solution Precursor High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (SP-HVOF) thermal spray was used to produce a double layer GZ/YSZ TBC and compared the thermal cycling performance with the single layer YSZ TBC. The temperature behaviour of the solution precursor GZ was studied, and single splat tests were carried out to obtain an optimised spray parameter. In thermal cycling tests, the single-layer YSZ reached 20 % failure at 85 ± 5 cycles, whereas the double-layer GZ/YSZ was at 70 ± 15 cycles. The single-layer failed at the topcoat/TGO interface, whereas the double-layer failed at GZ/YSZ interface and topcoat/TGO interface. Moreover, Gd diffusion occurred near the GZ/YSZ interface, resulting in porosities in the GZ layer.  相似文献

Gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7, GZO) as an advanced thermal barrier coating (TBC) material, has lower thermal conductivity, better phase stability, sintering resistance, and calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) attack resistance than yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, 6-8 wt%) at temperatures above 1200°C. However, the drawbacks of GZO, such as the low fracture toughness and the formation of deleterious interphases with thermally grown alumina have to be considered for the application as TBC. Using atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and suspension plasma spraying (SPS), double-layered YSZ/GZO TBCs, and triple-layered YSZ/GZO TBCs were manufactured. In thermal cycling tests, both multilayered TBCs showed a significant longer lifetime than conventional single-layered APS YSZ TBCs. The failure mechanism of TBCs in thermal cycling test was investigated. In addition, the CMAS attack resistance of both TBCs was also investigated in a modified burner rig facility. The triple-layered TBCs had an extremely long lifetime under CMAS attack. The failure mechanism of TBCs under CMAS attack and the CMAS infiltration mechanism were investigated and discussed.  相似文献

Nowadays, the Gd2Zr2O7 thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been evaluated as a promising alternative to yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Thus, this investigation focuses on the thermal property, morphology, and failure mechanism of double ceramic layers (DCLs) GdNdZrO/YSZ advanced TBCs. The GdNdZrO coatings with columnar morphology have been deposited on NiCoCrAlYHf bond coating using an electron beam physical vapor deposition method. Material characterizations mainly include X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal conductivity of GdNdZrO ceramic material is 0.494 W/mK at 1200°C. The thermal shock life of GdNdZrO/YSZ TBCs shows an average shock life of 5235 cycles. The TBC degradation occurs on the crack area within thermally grown oxide layer leading to the interface instability. The interface broken might play an important role in the failure mechanism of TBCs.  相似文献

The CMAS associated degradation of 7YSZ TBC layers is one of the serious problems in the aero engines that operate in dusty environments. CMAS infiltrates into TBC at high temperatures and stiffens the TBC which ultimately loses its strain tolerance and gets delaminated. The EB-PVD technique is used to coat TBCs exhibiting a columnar microstructure on parts such as blades and on vanes. By varying the EB-PVD process parameters, columnar morphology and porosity of the 7YSZ coating is changed and its effect on the CMAS infiltration behaviour is studied in detail. Two different TBC pore geometries were created and infiltration experiments were carried out at 1250 °C and 1225 °C for different time intervals. The 7YSZ coating with more ‘feathery’ features has resulted in higher CMAS resistance by at least by a factor of 2 than its less ‘feathery’ counterpart. These results are explained on the basis of a proposed physical model.  相似文献

The single-ceramic-layer (SCL) 8YSZ (conventional and nanostructured 8YSZ) and double-ceramic-layer (DCL) La2Zr2O7 (LZ)/8YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were fabricated by plasma spraying on nickel-based superalloy substrates with NiCrAlY as the bond coat. The thermal shock behavior of the three as-sprayed TBCs at 1000 °C and 1200 °C was investigated. The results indicate that the thermal cycling lifetime of LZ/8YSZ TBCs is longer than that of SCL 8YSZ TBCs due to the fact that the DCL LZ/8YSZ TBCs further enhance the thermal insulation effect, improve the sintering resistance ability and relieve the thermal mismatch between the ceramic layer and the metallic layer at high temperature. The nanostructured 8YSZ has higher thermal shock resistance ability than that of the conventional 8YSZ TBC which is attributed to the lower tensile stress in plane and higher fracture toughness of the nanostructured 8YSZ layer. The pre-existed cracks in the surface propagate toward the interface vertically under the thermal activation. The nucleation and growth of the horizontal crack along the interface eventually lead to the failure of the coating. The crack propagation modes have been established, and the failure patterns of the three as-sprayed coatings during thermal shock have been discussed in detail.  相似文献

Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) play a significant role in improving the efficiency of gas turbines by increasing their operating temperatures. The TBCs in advanced turbine engines are prone to silicate particles attack while operating at high temperatures. The silicate particles impinge on the hot TBC surfaces and melt to form calcia-magnesia-aluminosilicate (CMAS) glass deposits leading to coating premature failure. Fine powder of CMAS with the composition matching the desert sand has been synthesized by solution combustion technique. The present study also demonstrates the preparation of flowable yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and cluster paired YSZ (YSZ-Ln2O3, Ln = Dy and Gd) powders by single-step solution combustion technique. The as-synthesized powders have been plasma sprayed and the interaction of the free standing TBCs with CMAS at high-temperatures (1200 °C, 1270 °C and 1340 °C for 24 h) has been investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis of CMAS attacked TBCs revealed a reduction in phase transformation of tetragonal to monoclinic zirconia for YSZ-Ln2O3 (m-ZrO2: 44%) coatings than YSZ (m-ZrO2: 67%). The field emission scanning electron microscopic images show improved CMAS resistance for YSZ-Ln2O3 coatings than YSZ coatings.  相似文献

Improvement of hot corrosion resistance is one of the important parameters governing the lifetime and efficiency of the thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, the Gadolinium Zirconate (GZ) was synthesized by ball milling method and deposited by Electron Beam-Physical Vapour Deposition (EB-PVD) on Ni-based superalloy substrate with NiCrAlY as an intermediate bond coat. The effect of nanostructured GZ TBCs on hot corrosion resistance were studied under three different salt mixture environments viz; SM1, SM2 and SM3 in isothermal condition at 900 °C for 12 h. The results indicated that EB-PVD coated nanostructured GZ TBCs have improved the hot corrosion resistance and performed well under SM1 and SM3 conditions with minimal weight gain and without any spallation, whereas, the TBC suffered severe spallation under of SM2 salt condition with higher weight gain among the other two conditions. The formation of microcracks along the columnar gaps of the topcoat were found in the SM2 condition, have allowed the molten salts infiltration up to the coating interface. The formation of dense corrosive products GdVO4 and m-ZrO2 phases were identified after hot corrosion in SM1 and SM3 condition, which were absent in SM2 condition.  相似文献

Gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7, GZ) as one of the promising thermal barrier coating materials for high-temperature application in gas turbine was toughened by nanostructured 3 mol% yttria partially-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) incorporation. The fracture toughness of the composite of 90 mol% GZ-10 mol% YSZ (GZ–YSZ) was increased by about 60% relative to the monolithic GZ. Both the GZ and GZ–YSZ composite coatings were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying on Ni-base superalloys and then thermal-shock tested under the same conditions. The thermal-shock lifetime of GZ–YSZ composite coating was improved, which is believed to be mainly attributed to the enhancement of fracture toughness by the addition of YSZ. In addition, the failure mechanisms of the thermal-shock tested GZ–YSZ composite coatings were discussed.  相似文献

Air plasma sprayed (APS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are a widely used technology in the gas turbine industry to thermally insulate and protect underlying metallic superalloy components. These TBCs are designed to have intrinsically low thermal conductivity while also being structurally compliant to withstand cyclic thermal excursions in a turbine environment. This study examines yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) TBCs of varying architecture: porous and dense vertically cracked (DVC), which were deposited onto bond-coated superalloys and tested in a novel CO2 laser rig. Additionally, multilayered TBCs: a two-layered YSZ (dense + porous) and a multi-material YSZ/GZO TBC were evaluated using the same laser rig. Cyclic exposure under simulative thermal gradients was carried out using the laser rig to evaluate the microstructural change of these different TBCs over time. During the test, real-time calculations of the normalized thermal conductivity of the TBCs were also evaluated to elucidate information about the nature of the microstructural change in relation to the starting microstructure and composition. It was determined that porous TBCs undergo steady increases in conductivity, whereas DVC and YSZ/GZO systems experience an initial increase followed by a monotonic decrease in conductivity. Microstructural studies confirmed the difference in coating evolution due to the cycling.  相似文献

We report a double-ceramic-layer (DCL) thermal barrier coating (TBC) with high-entropy rare-earth zirconate (HE-REZ) as the top layer and yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as the inner layer sprayed on Ni-based superalloy by atmospheric plasma spraying. La2Zr2O7 (LZ) was selected as a reference for the HE-REZ. Thermal cycling test results demonstrate that the HE-REZ/YSZ DCL coating exhibited obviously improved thermal stability when compared to the LZ/YSZ DCL coating. The reasons for the improvement of the thermal shock resistance are considered to be the anti-sinterability of the HE-REZ ceramics during the thermal cycling test attributed to the sluggish diffusion effect and as well as the better match in the coefficient of thermal expansion of HE-REZ coating with the YSZ inner layer. In addition, the HE-REZ coating maintains fluorite structure after thermal cycling test. This study makes one step forward in the development and application of high-entropy rare-earth zirconate ceramic thermal barrier coatings.  相似文献

In the present work, YSZ TBCs and 10 wt% CeO2-doped YSZ thermal barrier coatings (CeYSZ TBCs) were prepared via atmospheric plasma spraying(APS) respectively, whereupon high temperature oxidation experiment was carried out at 1100 °C to compare the high temperature oxidation behavior and mechanism of the two TBCs. The results showed that the doping of CeO2 reduced the porosity of YSZ TBCs by 23%, resulting in smaller oxidation weight gain and lower TGO growth rates for CeYSZ TBCs. Besides, the TGO generated in CeYSZ TBCs was obviously thinner and there were fewer defects inside it. For YSZ TBCs, as the oxidation process proceeded, Al, Cr, Co and Ni elements in the bonding coating were oxidized successively to form loose and porous spinel type oxides (CS), which was apt to cause the spalling failure of TBCs. While, the Al2O3 layer of the TGO generated in CeYSZ TBCs ruptured later than that in YSZ TBCs, which delayed the oxidation of Cr, Co, and Ni elements and the formation of CS accordingly. Therefore, CeO2 doping can effectively improve the high temperature oxidation resistance of YSZ TBCs.  相似文献

Rare-earth (RE) zirconates, such as gadolinium zirconate (GZ), gained much attraction to be used for the next generation TBC. A double-layer and triple-layer TBC were deposited using the suspension and solution precursor high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) thermal spray. A dense solution precursor GZ layer was intended to minimise the crack propagation from underneath, thereby inhibiting the CMAS infiltration. In the furnace cycling test, the double- and triple-layer coatings had a comparable cyclic lifetime. For the CMAS test, both the double- and triple-layer coatings were exposed to CMAS at 1250 °C for 30 mins. The CMAS deposits melted and infiltrated both coatings through the dense vertical cracks (DVCs). Interestingly, the GZ reacted with the molten CMAS to form a gadolinium apatite phase (Ca2Gd8(SiO4)6O2) that was detected in the double- and triple-layer TBC. Both the double- and triple-layer TBCs succeeded in reacting with CMAS.  相似文献

Nanostructured scandia, yttria doped zirconia (5.5SYSZ), 7 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia (7YSZ) and 15YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were produced by plasma spraying on nickel-based superalloy substrates with NiCrAlY as the bond coat. The thermal stability and sintering behavior of the three as-sprayed TBCs at 1480 °C were investigated. The results indicated that the thermal stability of SYSZ and TBCs was longer than the 7YSZ TBCs due to higher amount of tetragonal phase. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the nanostructured 7YSZ coating exhibits higher sintering resistance than 5.5SYSZ TBC.  相似文献

A thermal barrier coating (TBC) system survived 500 hours in aggressive, 1300°C burner rig testing. The yttria-stabilized zirconia (7YSZ) TBC was plasma sprayed on an oxidation-resistant Ti2AlC-type MAX phase and tested in a jet fuel burner at 100 m/s, using 5 hours cycles. No coating spallation or surface recession was observed; Al2O3-scale growth produced a slight 2.4 mg/cm2 mass gain. The coating surface exhibited craze-cracked colonies of [111]flourite textured columns, with no visible moisture attack. The 20 μm alumina scale remained intact under the YSZ face, about twice that producing failure for TBC/superalloy systems. TiO2 nodules, initially formed on the uncoated backside, were removed, and Al2O3 was etched through volatile hydroxides formed in water vapor (~10%). Overall, the test indicated exceptional stability of the YSZ/Al2O3/Ti2AlC system under turbine conditions due in large part to close thermal expansion matching.  相似文献

In order to reveal the effect of Sc2O3 and Y2O3 co-doping system on the thermal shock resistance of ZrO2 thermal barrier coatings, Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 thermal barrier coatings (YSZ TBCs) and Sc2O3–Y2O3 co-stabilized ZrO2 thermal barrier coatings (ScYSZ TBCs) were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying technology. The surface and cross-section micromorphologies of YSZ ceramic coating and ScYSZ ceramic coatings were compared, and their phase composition before and after heat treatment at 1200 °C was analyzed. Whereupon, the thermal shock experiment of the two TBCs at 1100 °C was carried out. The results show that the micromorphologies of YSZ ceramic coating and ScYSZ ceramic coating were not much different, but the porosity of the latter was slightly higher. Before heat treatment, the phase composition of both YSZ ceramic coating and ScYSZ ceramic coating was a single T′ phase. After heat treatment, the phase composition of YSZ ceramic coating was a mixture of M phase, T phase, and C phase, while that of ScYSZ ceramic coating was still a single T′ phase, indicating ScYSZ ceramic coating had better T′ phase stability, which could be attributed to the co-doping system of Sc2O3 and Y2O3 facilitated the formation of defect clusters. In the thermal shock experiment, the thermal shock life of YSZ TBCs was 310 times, while that of ScYSZ TBCs was 370 times, indicating the latter had better thermal shock resistance. The difference in thermal shock resistance could be attributed to the different sintering resistance of ceramic coatings and the different growth rates of thermally grown oxide in the two TBCs. Furthermore, the thermal shock failure modes of YSZ TBCs and ScYSZ TBCs were different, the former was delamination, while the latter was delamination and shallow spallation.  相似文献

During the past decade, gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7, GZO) has attracted interest as an alternative material to partially yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Despite the well‐known benefits of GZO, such as lower thermal conductivity and superior temperature capability compared to YSZ, processing of GZO via atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) still remains a challenge. Here, we report on APS experiments which were performed to investigate the influence of processing on GZO microstructure and lifetime of GZO/YSZ double‐layer TBCs. Different microstructures of GZO were produced and characterized in terms of porosity, stoichiometry, Young′s modulus, and their effects on the lifetime of YSZ/GZO double‐layer TBCs were discussed. Particle diagnostics were utilized for the optimization of the process parameters with respect to different microstructures of GZO and stoichiometry. It was found that both cumulative porosity of GZO and pore size distribution, which alter the Young′s modulus significantly, govern the lifetime of double layers. In addition, it was shown that the deviation in GZO stoichiometry due to gadolinia evaporation in the investigated range does not display any critical effect on lifetime.  相似文献

La2Ce2O7 (LCO) is a promising candidate material for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) application because of its higher temperature capability and better thermal insulation property relative to yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ). In this work, La2Ce2O7 TBC with segmentation crack structure was produced by atmospheric plasma spray (APS). The mechanical properties of the sprayed coatings at room temperature including microhardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness and tensile strength were evaluated. The Young's modulus and microhardness of the segmented coating were measured to be about 25 and 5 GPa, relatively higher than those of the non-segmented coating, respectively. The fracture toughness of the LCO coating is in a range of 1.3–1.5 MPa m1/2, about 40% lower than that of the YSZ coating. The segmented TBC had a lifetime of more than 700 cycles, improving the lifetime by nearly two times as compared to the non-segmented TBC. The failure of the segmented coating occurred by chipping spallation and delamination cracking within the coating.  相似文献

The thermal shock behavior of a thermal barrier coating (TBC) prepared by plasma spraying at 1100 °C was investigated. The TBC consisted of a double layer structure of 8YSZ/CoCrAlYTaSi. The morphology, microstructure, phases and the elemental distribution of the TBCs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). The characterization results showed that the film consisted primarily of metastable tetragonal phases (t′), and a large number of micro-cracks were present in the 8YSZ crystals. Following eighty-six thermal shock cycles of the specimens a large areal spallation was observed on the 8YSZ coating. The decreased concentration of yttrium at the coating interfaces weakened the inhibition of crystal growth and the phase transition of the Al2O3. The growth of TGO (Thermal growth oxide) and the diffusion into the 8YSZ coating produced deformation and stress in the ceramic coating. Tantalum appeared to absorb the oxygen that diffused into the coatings and delayed the growth of TGO in the interface between the CoCrAlYTaSi and substrate, which was beneficial to prolonging the life of the TBC.  相似文献

In this study, first, Gd2Zr2O7/ceria–yttria stabilized zirconia (GZ/CYSZ) TBCs having multilayered and functionally graded designs were subjected to thermal shock (TS) test. The GZ/CYSZ functionally graded coatings displayed better thermal shock resistance than multilayered and single layered Gd2Zr2O7 coatings. Second, single layered YSZ and functionally graded eight layered GZ/CYSZ coating (FG8) having superior TS life time were selected for CMAS + hot corrosion test. CMAS + hot corrosion tests were carried out in the same experiment at once. Furthermore, to generate a thermal gradient, specimens were cooled from the back surface of the substrate while heating from the top surface of the TBC by a CO2 laser beam. Microstructural characterizations showed that the reaction products were penetrated locally inside of the YSZ. On the other hand, a reaction layer having ∼6 μm thickness between CMAS and Gd2Zr2O7 was seen. This reaction layer inhibited to further penetration of the reaction products inside of the FG8.  相似文献
