The present trial deals with the effects of birth stress on the thyreoidea respectively on the thyroxine- and triiodthyronine-concentration as well as on their unbound fraction (FT4 and FT3) of suckler calves and the evolution of those parameters in the first three months of life. T4- and T3 concentrations in blood serum of calves were beyond maternal levels increasing significantly in the first 24 hours with strong individual specificity and reaching levels of adult animals at the end of the three-month-period. The different increasing rates of the four parameters show a stimulation of the thyreoideal activity and of the monodejodinase-system as well and they show also a greater decomposition rate of the binding proteins. An influence of the course of parturition on the T3 level p.n. and the T4/T3 ratio in the first 24 hours could be disclosed. The hormone concentrations p.n. showed correlations to the pH and pCO2 of the neonatal calves. For T4 and T3 a strong influence of maternal levels on the hormone levels of the calves p.n. could be ascertained. Effects of breed, surrounding temperatures and type of husbandry on the investigated parameters could be established.  相似文献

Eighty-five unsuckled newborn calves, were fed 1.5 L of colostrum of known IgG concentration at either 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours after birth with no additional colostrum feeding. Another group of 11 calves were left with their dam for 16 hours after birth, before separation. Blood samples were taken from all calves 24 hours after colostrum feeding or separation from the dam and serum Ig concentrations were measured by electrophoresis. There were no significant differences in mean serum Ig concentrations between calves fed at the different times after birth. Three of the 11 calves left to suckle were hypogammaglobulinaemic. Other calves in this group had higher serum Ig concentrations than the means of all other groups. All groups had mean serum Ig concentrations higher than the suggested minimum concentration required for adequate calf health. There were a number of calves that did not reach the suggested minimum serum concentration after feeding, but calf mortality was low and all calves were healthy apart from a slight scour for a few weeks after birth. There was no significant relationship between serum Ig concentration 24 to 48 hours after birth and either calf mortality or average growth rate over an 8- to 10-month period.  相似文献

Behavioral observations and hematological, serum biochemical and blood gas measurements were made on 8 naturally occurring twin calves during the first 48 hours of life. These values were compared to similar measurements collected from 30 single born calves, born under the same calving conditions. All calves survived to at least 3 weeks of age without physically detectable disease. Although the gestational age of the twins and singles were not different, the twins had a lower mean birth weight. Calving difficulty score, time interval to standing and time interval to nursing were not different between the 2 groups. Twin calves had significantly lower rectal temperatures, arterial oxygen tensions and blood glucose concentrations than the single calves through the first 12 hours of life. Hct, Hgb concentration, and RBC were lower in twin calves throughout the 48 hour period. The N:L ratio was lower in the twins at birth. Mean serum IgG1 concentrations were lower in twins only at 24 hours whereas IgM concentrations were lower at both 24 and 48 hours in twins. Serum chemistry value differences between twin and single calves were most numerous at 24 hours of age when serum proteins, urea nitrogen, total bilirubin, sodium, chloride, and total calcium concentrations were higher in the twins and serum phosphorus concentration was lower in the twins.  相似文献

It is not known how immaturity and disease influence postnatal thyroid function in infants <30 wk of gestational age. We performed serial measurements of plasma thyroxine (T4), free T4 (FT4), triiodothyronine (T3), reverse T3 (rT3), TSH, and T4-binding globulin (TBG) in 100 infants of <30 wk of gestation, during the first 8 postnatal weeks, to investigate the influences of disease and gestational age on the time course of thyroid hormones. One hundred infants were divided twice into two groups: 1) in a group of 25-28 and of 28-30 wk of gestation; and 2) in a sick and a healthy group, with similar gestational ages. The time course of T4, FT4, T3, TSH, and TBG, but not rT3 differed significantly (p < 0.005) between the gestational age groups. T4 and FT4 decreased to levels below the cord blood value with a deeper FT4 nadir on d 7 in the youngest group. Disease decreased T4, FT4, T3, TSH, and TBG concentrations especially during the 1st wk after birth (p < 0.005). However, the FT4 nadir on d 7 was similar in sick and healthy infants. After 3 wk, T4, FT4, T3, and TBG were higher in the sick group compared with the healthy group. rT3 levels were not increased in sick infants. We conclude that the extent of the FT4 decrease after birth in infants of <30 wk gestation is mainly influenced by gestational age and probably reflects a transient depletion of thyroidal hormone reserves. rT3 cannot be used as a marker of nonthyroidal illness in very preterm infants.  相似文献

Adaptation of the thyroid gland to the Antarctic environment was studied in nine healthy euthyroid tropical men of the Sixth Indian Antarctic Expedition during 1 year of their residence at polar latitudes. Circulatory concentrations of thyroid hormones, total T4 (TT4), total T3 (TT3), free T4 (FT4), free T3 (FT3), reverse T3 (rT3), thyroxine binding globulin (TBG), T3 uptake and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were estimated in New Delhi and during the first week of each month of the stay in Antarctica. At the end of the Austral summer in March, the TT3 concentrations were found to be significantly lower (P < 0.01) compared to values recorded in New Delhi and showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) during the Austral winter in August. The mean TT3 concentrations from May to December were found to be significantly higher than the March or April values. Plasma TT4 and rT3 concentrations tended to decline in March but remained unaltered during the entire period in Antarctica. The FT4, FT3, TBG and T3 uptake did not show any appreciable change. Though, the TT3:TT4 ratio tended to decline in March and April suggesting decreased peripheral conversion of T4 to T3 as the possible mechanism for a decline in TT3 in March. physical exertion and prolonged exposure to extreme cold appeared to be the major contributory factors. The TSH concentration in March, April, November and December were found to be significantly higher than the New Delhi values. The morning as well as evening cortisol concentrations during the Austral winter were higher than the March values suggesting that cortisol rhythmicity was well maintained in Antarctica, albeit at a higher level. These observations indicated that the subtle changes in thyroid hormones during a prolonged stay at polar latitudes are related not only to the extreme cold but also to other factors such as physical activity, polar days and polar nights.  相似文献

The objective of the present paper was to examine the development of the total protein concentration in blood serum and the gamma-GT activity in 49 calves in relation to the health status during the first 14 days of life. For this purpose, blood samples were taken immediately after birth of the animals, after 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours and from then onwards once a day with the calves being subject to a thorough clinical examination each time. All calves received pooled colostrum. At the end of the experiment, the calves were subdivided into three groups on the basis of their health status, i.e. control calves, calves with a slight or moderately severe disease and calves suffering from a severe disease. In all three groups the total protein concentration increased significantly after the colostrum intake and decreased slowly from the 2nd day of life onwards. The gamma-GT activity as well increased significantly after the colostrum intake and decreased rapidly after 12th hour of life and progressively in the further course of the experiment. Both parameters varied considerably from one calf to the next and no statistically significant differences in these parameters between the three groups could be found. It can thus be deduced that the total protein concentration in blood serum and the gamma-GT activity do not allow any predictions about the development of the health status during the first 14 days of life to be made.  相似文献

Heat production was measured in newborn Angus-, Brahman-, and Tuli-sired calves born to Angus (n = 20) and Brahman (n = 26) dams, before (thermoneutral metabolic rate, TMR) and after norepinephrine (NE) infusion (peak metabolic rate, PMR), to assess genotypic effects on nonshivering thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue. Calves were fed pooled colostrum, fitted with jugular catheters, and placed in a temperature-controlled (37 degrees C) water immersion system. Heat production, determined by indirect calorimetry, and tympanic temperature were measured continuously in calves from approximately 3 to 6 h of age. Blood samples were collected at birth and at 0, 5, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 min relative to NE infusion (35 micrograms.min-1.kg BW-1 for 4 min), and plasma was analyzed for metabolites (glucose, NEFA, and urea nitrogen [PUN]) and hormones (cortisol, triiodothyronine [T3] and thyroxine [T4]). Weight-specific TMR (cal.min-1.kg-1) was not affected by breed of sire or dam, although weight-specific PMR (cal.min-1.kg-1) was lower (P < .01) in Brahman-sired calves than in Angus- or Tuli-sired calves and was lower (P < .001) in calves born to Brahman rather than Angus dams. The reduction in weight-specific PMR due to the maternal Brahman influence was sire-breed dependent, and the reduction was largest (P < .01) for Tuli-sired (34.3%), intermediate (P < .05) for Brahman-sired (15.1%), and lowest (P > .25) for Angus-sired calves (4.1%). The PMR:TMR ratio was 1.80 and 2.21 +/- .06 in calves born to Brahman and Angus dams, respectively. Peak tympanic temperature was .6 degree C lower (P < .01) in calves born to Brahman rather than Angus dams. At birth, plasma NEFA concentrations were higher (P < .001) and glucose tended (P = .13) to be higher in calves born to Brahman rather than Angus dams. Cortisol, T3, and T4 concentrations at birth were higher in calves born to Brahman dams than in those born to Angus dams. These results suggest that calves born to Brahman dams may have less thermogenically active brown adipose tissue than calves born to Angus dams, which may contribute to the relative cold intolerance of calves with Bos indicus inheritance.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the effects of hypothyroidism during late fetal life in pigs on (1) the perinatal pattern of plasma levels of thyroxine (TT4), total 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (TT3) and free T3 (FT3), and liver 5'-deiodinase activity, and (2) the early postnatal development of thermoregulation. Fetal hypothyroidism (test animals) was induced by feeding the sow a high glucosinolate rapeseed diet. Plasma levels of thyroid hormones, thyroid gland weights and liver 5'-deiodinase activity of control animals increased during late gestation (P < 0.01). The early postnatal period was characterized by a surge in thyroid hormone levels during the first 6 h (P < 0.05), followed by a transient decrease at 12 h and a second rise by 24 h after birth. This surge was much higher (P < 0.01) for TT3 than for TT4, but liver 5'-deiodinase activity did not change during the first 24 h of life. Fetal hypothyroidism was characterized by lower plasma levels of thyroid hormones (P < 0.05), and lower hepatic 5'-deiodinase activities (P < 0.01) than in control fetuses at 110 d of gestation. During the first 6 h of life, test pigs had lower levels of TT4 (P < 0.05) but exhibited a greater postnatal surge in TT3 and FT3 (P < 0.05) than did the controls. The minimal and summit metabolism of the control pigs increased markedly (P < 0.01) during the first 2 d of life, without any significant change in thermal body conductance, suggesting that this age-related improvement in thermoregulation was due to the development of the ability to produce heat.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: It has been demonstrated that antibodies (Ab) to thyroid-stimulating hormone receptors (R), which stimulate the thyroid gland, induce hyperthyroidism in patients with Graves' disease. Furthermore, it has been shown in thyroid cells in culture that thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor Ab acts through the adenosine 3', 5'-monophosphate pathway which stimulates both thyroid hormonogenesis and growth. We investigated the relations between thyroid autoimmunity expression and thyroid ultrasonographic parameters or thyroid hormonal status in patients with Graves' disease. PATIENTS: A prospective study of 53 consecutive patients referred with untreated Graves' disease. MEASUREMENTS: Measurements were made of serum TSH-R, peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (Tg) Ab and basal plasma free T4 (FT4), free T3 (FT3) and TSH. Thyroid morphological characteristics (number and total volume of nodule(s), total volume of lobes and total thyroid volume) were determined by ultrasonography. RESULTS: There were significant correlations (P < 0.001) between TSH-RAb levels and FT4 values (r = 0.48) or FT3 levels (r = 0.46). Likewise, significant correlations were found between TSH-RAb levels and total lobe volume values (r = 0.56, P < 0.001), total nodular volume values (r = 0.59, P < 0.01) or total thyroid volume values (r = 0.63, P < 0.001). By contrast, no correlation was found between TSH-RAb levels and the number of nodules or between any of the ultrasonographic parameters and TPOAb levels or TgAB values. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates, in vivo, that TSH receptor antibodies modulate the thyroid ultrasonographic extranodular and nodular volumes in patients with Graves' disease.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that low circulating thyroxine concentrations characteristic of very low birth weight (VLBW) neonates (< 1500 g) are the result of decreased protein binding of thyroid hormones and to elucidate the mechanism(s) responsible and possible significance thereof. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison of thyroid related measurements in cord blood specimens from VLBW infants and from full term infants. Longitudinal comparison in cord and 2- and 4-week blood specimens from VLBW infants. PATIENTS: Cord blood specimens were analysed from 47 VLBW and 45 full term infants weighing > or = 2500 g. Repeat analyses in venous bloods from 32 of the VLBW infants were analysed at 2 weeks of age and again at 4 weeks in 23. The first cohort of patients was studied in 1994 and comprised 28 VLBW and 24 full term infants (Cohort A). The studies were repeated in 1995-96 in 19 VLBW infants and 21 full term infants (Cohort B). MEASUREMENTS: T4, free T4 (FT4), T3, thyroxine binding globulin (TBG), and TSH were measured in cord blood and 2- and 4-week venous specimens from VLBW infants and in cord blood specimens of full term infants. Molar ratios of T4/TBG were calculated. RESULTS: (1) Cord blood TBG, T4 and T3 concentrations of VLBW infants were each 60% of those of term infants. TBG concentrations were 397 +/- 111 vs 680 +/- 172 nmol/l (P < 0.0005). T4 concentrations were 76 +/- 22 vs 139 +/- 26 nmol/l (P < 0.0005). FT4 concentrations were in the normal adult range in both neonatal groups. T4/TBG ratios did not differ between the neonatal groups but were significantly less than that of adults (P < 0.001). (2) TSH concentrations in VLBW infants at 2 and 4 weeks were less than 50% of cord blood values. At 2 weeks, TBG concentrations of VLBW infants were unchanged from cord blood concentrations but mean T4 concentration fell by 18% and T4/TBG ratios by 21% (P < 0.005). Mean FT4 rose by 78% (P < 0.02). The changes in mean T4 and FT4 were due largely to FT4 concentrations of 37-113 pmol/l and T4 concentrations of 13-48 nmol/l in 5 infants. These infants also had lower T4/TBG ratios and were smaller and more ill than the remainder of the cohort. The changes disappeared by 4 weeks in 3 of the 4 infants tested. CONCLUSIONS: Cord T4/TBG ratios are the same in very low birth weight and term infants and are significantly lower than in adult blood. These are more than compensated for in term infants by a 236% increase in thyroxine binding globulin concentrations. The lower thyroxine binding globulin concentrations in very low birth weight infants explain their much lower T4 concentrations. Cord FT4 concentrations of full term and very low birth weight infants are in the normal adult range. T4 concentrations are further depressed and free T4 concentrations elevated in the most ill very low birth weight infants at 2 weeks of age in a manner analogous to that of the 'sick euthyroid syndrome'.  相似文献

The literature indicates that sire breed of calf influences beef calf performance. However, there is little information concerning sire breed of calf effects on reproduction in beef cows. In this experiment, Angus (A), Brahman (B), or Tuli (T) bulls were bred to 136 Brahman (B) cows to examine sire breed of calf influence on peripartum hormone profiles and the length of postpartum anestrus. Cows were bled from 7 d prepartum to 28 d postpartum to determine peripartum hormone concentrations. Cows carrying AB calves had greater (P < 0.05) prepartum estradiol-17 beta concentrations than did cows carrying BB and TB calves. Prepartum and postpartum progesterone concentrations did not differ between cows with AB, BB, and TB calves. Cows with TB calves had lower (P < 0.01) 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) concentrations than did cows with AB and BB calves during the early postpartum period. Adjusting for birth weight removed the sire breed of calf effect on postpartum PGFM concentrations, but not prepartum estradiol-17 beta. Postpartum anestrus was shorter (P < 0.05) for cows nursing BB calves (84 +/- 6 d) than for cows nursing AB (101 +/- 6 d) or TB calves (110 +/- 7 d). Adjustment for estradiol or PGFM concentrations did not reduce sire breed of calf effects on the length of postpartum anestrus. Further work is heeded to determine how calf genotype may modulate the postpartum reproductive function of the dam.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of selective cholecystokinin (CCK) antagonists on the development of a preference for the mother by newly born lambs. At birth lambs received an injection of the CCK-A antagonist devazepide (0.01 or 0.1 mg/kg), the CCK-B antagonist PD135158 (0.01 or 0.1 mg/kg), or saline for the controls (1 ml/kg). No major side effects were observed in the first 4 postnatal hours except that lambs receiving PD135158 displayed more exploratory behavior towards the maternal body than lambs from the other groups. When tested in a 2-choice test situation at 24 hr of age, lambs treated with PD135158 or saline spent significantly more time near their dams than near the alien ewes, whereas lambs treated with devazepide did not show any discrimination. The effect of devazepide persisted at 48 hr of age. The use of a CCK-A antagonist, but not a CCK-B antagonist, was concluded to prevent the formation of a preferential relationship between the lamb and its mother, most probably by impairing neonatal learning. Gestation length, unassisted calving percentage, perinatal mortality, calf crop weaned (survival from birth to weaning), birth weight, and 200-d weaning weight of 2,597 calves born and 2,433 calves weaned are reported for F1 crosses resulting from matings of Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Pinzgauer, Shorthorn, Galloway, Longhorn, Nellore, Piedmontese, and Salers sires to Angus and Hereford dams (> or = 3 yr of age) in Cycle IV of the Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. Hereford and Angus sires included 1) reference sires born from 1963 to 1971 used in previous cycles of the GPE Program, 2) sires born from 1982 to 1985 (1980s), and 3) sires born from 1983 to 1985 used in natural service clean-up matings. Effects of sire breed of calf were significant for gestation length, unassisted calving percentage, birth weight, and 200-d weaning weight. Gestation length was significantly longer for Nellore than for Charolais, Galloway, Longhorn, Piedmontese, and Salers, which were in turn longer than for Hereford-Angus and Shorthorn. Rankings for birth weight tended to be inversely related to those for calving ease, except for Shorthorn and Salers sires, which required low assistance relative to their heavy birth weights. Rankings for 200-d weight among AI-sired progeny were as follows: Charolais (231.3), Nellore (229.7), Salers (225.5), Shorthorn (223.8), 1980s Hereford-Angus (223.1), Piedmontese (220.0), Galloway (209.5), reference Hereford-Angus (210.1), and Longhorn (199.0); differences > or = 6.5 kg were significant.  相似文献

Thyroid hormones appear to determine adult testis size in rodents by regulating the period of Sertoli cell proliferation in the neonatal period. In the present study, the correlation between neonatal thyroid hormone levels (T3 and thyroxin, T4) and postpubertal testis size in Simental bulls was examined. T3 and T4 levels were measured in blood plasma from 35 calves immediately after their arrival at the AI centre at age 3-6 months. Testis size (height and width) was measured at 12 months of age in the same live animals. A significant negative correlation (r = -0.55; p < or = 0.001) was found between T4 and calculated testicular volume using either the Pearson correlation test or linear regression analysis, while the levels of T3 and testis volume showed a negative correlation, although this did not reach statistical significance (r = -0.20, p < or = 0.05). The results of this study suggest, therefore, that neonatal thyroid hormone levels might have the same effect on testicular size in cattle as they do in rodents.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of thyroid abnormalities among depressed outpatients and to examine the response to treatment of those subjects with relatively low or high thyroid hormone levels. METHOD: Outpatients (N = 200) 18 to 65 years of age who met DSM-III-R criteria for major depression were screened for the presence of thyroid abnormalities using a number of thyroid indices. Of these patients, 166 were then treated openly with the antidepressant fluoxetine for 12 weeks. We assessed whether patients with relatively low or high thyroid hormone levels had a different response to treatment compared with other patients. The 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D-17) was administered during the study to assess changes in depressive symptoms. Thyroid function was assessed by measuring T3, T4, free T4 index (FT4I), T3 uptake (T3U), and serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. RESULTS: No clinical cases of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism were detected. Of the patients examined, 5 (2.6%) had slightly elevated TSH levels (range, 4.7-8.2); none of these had T4 or FT4I levels below the normal range. Subnormal levels of T4 or FT4I were found in 1 subject (0.5%). T3 and T3U levels were below the normal range in a larger number of patients (7.6% and 15.0% respectively), but only 1 of these patients had elevated TSH levels. None of the patients had levels of TSH below the normal range, and only 3 subjects (1.5%) had T4 levels above the normal range. No relationship was found between response rate (assessed as either change in HAM-D-17 score or as remission of depressive symptoms with a HAM-D-17 score < or = 7 for 3 consecutive weeks) and each of the thyroid tests, even after adjusting for baseline severity of depression. CONCLUSION: In depressed outpatients, it appears that hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are extremely uncommon and that the presence of subtle thyroid function abnormalities does not have an impact on treatment outcome.  相似文献

The underlying causes of 35 children with primary congenital hypothyroidism at the Children's Hospital were studied. There were 21 girls and 14 boys. Serum T4 and TSH level, 24 hours 131I uptake, and technetium-99m thyroid scintigraphy were performed after discontinuation of synthetic thyroid hormone for 4-6 weeks. Athyrosis was the most common cause and accounted for forty-three per cent of the patients. Twenty per cent of the patients had thyroid hypoplasia. Ectopic thyroid was found in thirty-three per cent of the patients. Only a patient whose diagnosis was organification defect had slightly enlarged thyroid gland, high retention of 131I and positive perchlorate discharge test. Onset of symptoms before 9 months of age may be helpful for distinguishing between lingual thyroid and the others. Serum T4 level less than 2 micrograms/dL was observed to be more common in athyrosis and lingual thyroid groups than thyroid hypoplasia group.  相似文献

A total of 580 fecal samples from 30 cows and their calves from three dairy farms in S?o Paulo State, Brazil, was collected monthly over a period of 1 year (April 1994 to March 1995). A combination of water-ether centrifugal sedimentation technique followed by sucrose centrifugal flotation was used for neonatal samples and sucrose centrifugal flotation for the remainder of the samples. Cryptosporidium muris was found in calves from all farms, although the parasite was not detected in the dams. C. muris oocysts were excreted by 14 of the 30 calves, on at least one occasion during the year. Of the 307 calf fecal samples examined, 53 (17.3%) were positive for C. muris. The mean persistency of oocyst shedding in feces was 4 +/- 3 months. Sixty-four per cent of the positive calves excreted few oocysts, while 36% discharged many oocysts for a longer period (P < 0.05). Oocysts were first detected at the mean age of 3 +/- 1 months. The age of the positive calves ranged from 6 weeks to 14 months.  相似文献

Breeding animal transports between parts of our institute were used assessing effects of age of animals, of breed, of their functional state and of individual specificity of reaction patterns using peripheral venous blood samples. Increased mean values of Hb, Hk, body temperature, total protein, albumin, FT4, T4, FT3, T3, cortisol, adrenaline and decreased ones of body weight, Pa, Fe, noradrenaline were found after transport stress. Comparing age matched groups of DSB and HF breed higher concentrations of total protein, creatinine, lactate, cortisol, FT4, T3 and FT3 and lower ones of albumin, blood urea and Fe could be observed in animals of DSB breed before and after transport. Strong correlations existed on 14 variables within animals before and after transport stress meaning there could be individual specificity of some blood parameters.  相似文献

The effect of three different feeding techniques (electronic automated feeder, teat bucket and bucket with floating teat) on oral activities, skin condition, health and performance of 144 German Holstein group housed veal calves was investigated. About 21% of the observed time over 24 hours was spent on oral activities and only about 1% with the particularly health-relevant activities at prepuce, navel or scrotum. As a consequence of sucking activities at pen mates in most cases reddening of the skin and, with low incidence (about 7%), additional loss of hair could be found. Altogether about 74% of the calves were affected with the highest incidence in the electronic automated feeder groups. Calves of these groups had, moreover, higher disease incidences and a lower weight gain and feed conversion rate than those fed by teat bucket or by bucket with floating teat. Altogether results show that in terms of behaviour and health it is possible to keep calves at the age of two weeks in groups, even in conventional veal calf production, when satisfactory management is applied. The electronic automated feeder still needs further technical development for use with veal calves.  相似文献

Preweaning data on 486 Angus, Brahman, and reciprocal cross calves (AB, BA) managed on common bermudagrass or endophyte-infected tall fescue were used to evaluate the interactions of forage type and sex of calf with direct effects, individual heterosis, and maternal effects. Calves were spring-born in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 to five sires of each breed. Male calves were castrated at birth, and calves were not creep-fed. Average values of heterosis for birth weight, 205-d weight, weaning hip height, and weaning weight:height ratio (WT/HT) were important (P < .01) and consistent across forage environment. Heterosis for birth weight was larger in bull calves than in heifer calves (P < .05), whereas heterosis for other preweaning traits were consistent across sex of calf. Average maternal effects for WT/HT (P < .10) were important and consistent across forage environment. Maternal effects for birth weight were larger with bull calves than with heifer calves (P < .01). Maternal effects for weaning hip height favored the Angus dam managed on bermudagrass (P < .05) but not managed on fescue. A similar but nonsignificant trend occurred in maternal effects for 205-d weight. Direct effects for birth weight were larger in bull calves than in heifer calves (P < .01). Direct effects for weaning height were larger in calves managed on bermudagrass than in calves managed on tall fescue (P < .07). A similar but nonsignificant trend was evident in direct effects for 205-d weight. Direct effects for WT/HT were relatively small and unimportant.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
