This study evaluated the water absorption, solubility, kinetics of water diffusion and residual monomer content of commercial poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base material modified with dimethyl itaconate (DMI) and di‐n‐butyl itaconate (DBI). Water absorption and solubility were measured gravimetrically while the residual monomer content was analysed using high‐performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. It was found that the addition of di‐n‐alkyl itaconates significantly decreases the residual methyl methacrylate (MMA) content in the polymerized material. Maximum uptake (M) and loss (M), and diffusion coefficients for absorption (Da) and desorption (Dd) of water through all materials were established. M shows a linear decrease with increasing amount of itaconate in the system while Da shows a linear increase with increasing amount of itaconate, both of these effects being more pronounced when DBI is present compared to DMI. M is a linear function of the value of Hoy's solubility parameter. The reduction in residual MMA promoted by addition of a small amount of di‐n‐alkyl itaconates can improve the applicative properties and biocompatibility of the PMMA denture base material. Also, it is shown that modification of the denture base material with di‐n‐alkyl itaconates can enable precise control of water absorption in the system. The thermal degradation of poly(n‐butyl methacrylate‐co‐alkyl acrylate) was compared with ultrasonic degradation. For this purpose, different compositions of poly (n‐butyl methacrylate‐co‐methyl acrylate) (PBMAMA) and a particular composition of poly(n‐butyl methacrylate‐co‐ethyl acrylate) (PBMAEA) and poly(n‐butyl methacrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate) (PBMABA) were synthesized and characterized. The thermal degradation of polymers shows that the poly(alkyl acrylates) degrade in a single stage by random chain scission and poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) degrades in two stages. The number of stages of thermal degradation of copolymers was same as the majority component of the copolymer. The activation energy corresponding to random chain scission increased and then decreased with an increase of n‐butyl methacrylate fraction in copolymer. The effect of methyl acrylate content, alkyl acrylate substituent, and solvents on the ultrasonic degradation of these copolymers was investigated. A continuous distribution kinetics model was used to determine the degradation rate coefficients. The degradation rate coefficient of PBMAMA varied nonlinearly with n‐butyl methacrylate content. The degradation of poly (n‐butyl methacrylate‐co‐alkyl acrylate) followed the order: PBMAMA < PBMAEA < PBMABA. The variation in the degradation rate constant with composition of the copolymer was discussed in relation to the competing effects of the stretching of the polymer in solution and the electron displacement in the main chain. Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐poly(L ‐lactic acid)‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymer was prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure and properties of the copolymer were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR), thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic plot for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate using poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) as the initiator shows that the reaction time increases linearly with ln[M]0/[M]. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve grafted chains with well‐defined molecular weights, and block copolymers with narrowed molecular weight distributions. The thermal stability of PLLA is improved by copolymerization. A new wash‐extraction method for removing copper from the ATRP has also exhibits satisfactory results. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(mono n-alkyl itaconate)s, poly(methyl n-alkyl itaconate)s and poly(di n-alkyl itaconate)s with n=12, 14, 16, 18 and 22 have been prepared by radical polymerization. NMR studies point out that poly(methyl n-alkyl itaconate)s and poly(di n-alkyl itaconate)s are mainly syndiotactic polymers whereas poly(mono n-alkyl itaconate)s are obtained as almost atactic polymers. The characterization performed by DSC, solid state 13C CP/MAS NMR and X-ray diffraction, indicates that the side chains of poly(mono n-alkyl itaconate)s and poly(methyl n-alkyl itaconate)s derivatives with more than 12 carbon atoms are able to crystallize in hexagonal lattices. In the case of poly(di n-alkyl itaconate)s, when the side chains contain 12 or more carbon atoms, they are able to crystallize also in hexagonal lattices.  相似文献

Acrylonitrile–ammonium itaconate copolymers were prepared by H2O/dimethyl formamide suspension polymerization technique. Differential scanning calorimetry results of the degradation of acrylonitrile–ammonium itaconate copolymers in air are presented. The apparent activation energy of degradation of the copolymer was calculated using the Kissinger method. Effects of copolymerization conditions on the apparent activation energy of copolymer were studied. Increasing the dimethyl formamide concentration in the solvent mixture leads to a rapid increase in the degradation apparent activation energy of acrylonitrile–ammonium itaconate copolymer. The value of the degradation apparent activation energy of the copolymer synthesized in dimethyl formamide solvent increases up to 168.3 kJ mol?1. The apparent activation energy decreases quickly along with an increase in ammonium itaconate concentration, and this change becomes less prominent as the weight ratio of ammonium itaconate/acrylonitrile goes beyond 6/94, ΔEa = 89.4 ± 2.0 kJ mol?1. The apparent activation energy shows a trend of increase with increasing copolymerization temperature. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 1708–1711, 2005  相似文献

Morphologies of polymer blends based on polystyrene‐b‐ polybutadiene‐b ‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (SBM) triblock copolymer were predicted, adopting the phase diagram proposed by Stadler and co‐workers for neat SBM block copolymer, and were experimentally proved using atomic force microscopy. All investigated polymer blends based on SBM triblock copolymer modified with polystyrene (PS) and/or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) homopolymers showed the expected nanostructures. For polymer blends of symmetric SBM‐1 triblock copolymer with PS homopolymer, the cylinders in cylinders core?shell morphology and the perforated lamellae morphology were obtained. Moreover, modifying the same SBM‐1 triblock copolymer with both PS and PMMA homopolymers the cylinders at cylinders morphology was reached. The predictions for morphologies of blends based on asymmetric SBM‐2 triblock copolymer were also confirmed experimentally, visualizing a spheres over spheres structure. This work presents an easy way of using PS and/or PMMA homopolymers for preparing nanostructured polymer blends based on SBM triblock copolymers with desired morphologies, similar to those of neat SBM block copolymers. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this study, redox‐initiated free radical graft copolymerization of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been carried out in aqueous media to develop a novel cellulose‐based copolymer. Cerium ammonium nitrate was used as the initiator in the presence of nitric acid. Effects of monomer concentration, initiator concentration, polymerization time, and polymerization temperature on the graft parameters of copolymers were studied. The successful grafting copolymerization between MCC and MMA was validated through attenuated total reflection, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, field‐emission scanning electron microscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. In comparison to native MCC, the resultant copolymers exhibited enhanced thermal stability and better compatibility with natural rubber, suggesting its potential application as reinforcement material in rubber industry. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymerization reactions of di-(tri-n-butyltin) itaconate with styrene and methyl methacrylate were carried out in solution at 70°C using 1 mol% azobisisobutyronitrile as a free radical initiator. The copolymer compositions were determined by chemical analysis as well as from 1H-NMR data. The monomer reactivity ratios for copolymerizations of di-(tri-n-butyltin) itaconate with styrene and methyl methacrylate have been found to be r1 = 0.228, r2 = 0.677, and r1 = 0.220, r2 = 1.635, respectively. The sequence distribution of the triad fractions were calculated from reactivity ratios and compared with those obtained from 1H-NMR data.  相似文献

The physical properties found during the swelling process of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and of copolymers of HEMA with mono‐n‐methyl itaconate, synthesized by solution and bulk polymerization, are reported. The swelling kinetics were followed at four different temperatures (295, 300, 305 and 310 K). Experimental data follow second‐order swelling kinetics, from where the kinetic rate constant k and the swelling capacity at equilibrium W were calculated as a function of temperature. The kinetic rate constant obeys Arrhenius behaviour. The following network parameters were determined for the hydrogels: Young's moduli E, effective crosslinking density ve, molar mass per crosslink MC, volume fraction ϕ2 and polymer‐liquid interaction parameter χ. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(p‐dioxanone)–poly(ethylene glycol)–poly(p‐dioxanone) ABA triblock copolymers (PEDO) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization from p‐dioxanone using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights as macroinitiators in N2 atmosphere. The copolymer was characterized by 1H NMR spectroscope. The thermal behavior, crystallization, and thermal stability of these copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric measurements. The water absorption of these copolymers was also measured. The results indicated that the content and length of PEG chain have a greater effect on the properties of copolymers. This kind of biodegradable copolymer will find a potential application in biomedical materials. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102:1092–1097, 2006  相似文献

Diblock copolymers of poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PLLA‐b‐PMMA) were synthesized through a sequential two‐step strategy, which combines ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), using a bifunctional initiator, 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol. The trichloro‐terminated poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA‐Cl) with high molecular weight (Mn,GPC = 1–12 × 104 g/mol) was presynthesized through bulk ROP of L ‐lactide (L ‐LA), initiated by the hydroxyl group of the double‐headed initiator, with tin(II) octoate (Sn(Oct)2) as catalyst. The second segment of the block copolymer was synthesized by the ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA), with PLLA‐Cl as macroinitiator and CuCl/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as catalyst, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was chosen as reaction medium due to the poor solubility of the macroinitiator in conventional solvents at the reaction temperature. The trichloroethoxyl terminal group of the macroinitiator was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The comprehensive results from GPC, FTIR, 1H‐NMR analysis indicate that diblock copolymers PLLA‐b‐PMMA (Mn,GPC = 5–13 × 104 g/mol) with desired molecular composition were obtained by changing the molar ratio of monomer/initiator. DSC, XRD, and TG analyses establish that the crystallization of copolymers is inhibited with the introduction of PMMA segment, which will be beneficial to ameliorating the brittleness, and furthermore, to improving the thermal performance. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dually responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of hydrophilic poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) [poly(NIPAAm)] and hydrophobic poly(9‐anthracene methyl methacrylate) were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 3‐(benzyl sulfanyl thiocarbonyl sulfanyl) propionic acid as a chain‐transfer agent. In the first step, the poly(NIPAAm) chain was grown to make a macro‐RAFT agent, and in the second step, the chain was extended by hydrophobic 9‐anthryl methyl methacrylate to yield amphiphilic poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide‐b‐9‐anthracene methyl methacrylate) block copolymers. The formation of copolymers with three different hydrophobic block lengths and a fixed hydrophilic block was confirmed from their molecular weights. The self‐assembly of these copolymers was studied through the determination of the lower critical solution temperature and critical micelle concentration of the copolymers in aqueous solution. The self‐assembled block copolymers displayed vesicular morphology in the case of the small hydrophobic chain, but the morphology gradually turned into a micellar type when the hydrophobic chain length was increased. The variations in the length and chemical composition of the blocks allowed the tuning of the block copolymer responsiveness toward both the pH and temperature. The resulting self‐assembled structures underwent thermally induced and pH‐induced morphological transitions from vesicles to micelles and vice versa in aqueous solution. These dually responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers have potential applications in the encapsulation of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drug molecules, as evidenced from the dye encapsulation studies. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The grafting of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer onto natural rubber using potassium persulfate as an initiator was carried out by emulsion polymerization. The rubber macroradicals reacted with MMA to form graft copolymers. The morphology of grafted natural rubber (GNR) was determined by transmission electron microscopy and it was confirmed that the graft copolymerization was a surface‐controlled process. The effects of the initiator concentration, reaction temperature, monomer concentration, and reaction time on the monomer conversion and grafting efficiency were investigated. The grafting efficiency of the GNR was determined by a solvent‐extraction technique. The natural rubber‐g‐methyl methacrylate/poly(methyl methacrylate) (NR‐g‐MMA/PMMA) blends were prepared by a melt‐mixing system. The mechanical properties and the fracture behavior of GNR/PMMA blends were evaluated as a function of the graft copolymer composition and the blend ratio. The tensile strength, tear strength, and hardness increased with an increase in PMMA content. The tensile fracture surface examined by scanning electron microscopy disclosed that the graft copolymer acted as an interfacial agent and gave a good adhesion between the two phases of the compatibilized blend. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized in different weight ratios using UV light induced photo‐polymerization to give poly(HDDA‐co‐MMA). Differential scanning calorimetry shows that copolymer was formed. The thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric studies with different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were adopted to evaluate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These analyses are important to study the binder removal from 3D‐shaped ceramic objects made by techniques like Solid free form fabrication. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymers of itaconic acid with methyl methacrylate, P(ItA–MMA), have been synthesized as promising positive working electron beam resists.1,2 However, attempts to obtain greater electron beam sensitivity by increasing the itaconic acid content and initial molecular weight of these copolymers have been hindered by difficulties in synthesizing itaconic acid copolymers with an ItA content greater than 50 mol% or with a molecular weight above 250,000. The usefulness of the MMA–ItA copolymers is also limited by their susceptibility to anhydride formation which makes this resist very sensitive to prebake conditions and aging times. To overcome these limitations and to develop resist materials with improved sensitivity, alkyl ester derivatives of itaconic acid have been synthesized, both as homopolymers and as copolymers with methyl methacrylate. The electron-beam chain scissioning yields, G(s), of these derivatives have been determined, and the most promising of these copolymers and homopolymers have been evaluated for lithographic performance. The G(s) values of the alkyl itaconate copolymers depend greatly on the structure of the alkyl group. The mono-alkyl itaconate copolymers exhibit G(s) values 2–3 times greater than the corresponding dialkyl itaconate copolymers. In particular, copolymers of monomethyl itaconate (MeI) with methyl methacrylate are found to be promising resist materials with high sensitivities and compatability with processing conditions. A trend in sensitivity is observed for a series of MMA–MeI copolymers ranging from 20 to 85 mol % MeI, with a maximum sensitivity observed for the 57 and 73% MeI compositions. These copolymers exhibit improved sensitivity over that of the itaconic acid copolymers. Anhydride is formed less readily from the MeI copolymers than from the ItA copolymers, improving the stability of the resist for process conditions. Areas exposed in P(MMA–73 mol % MeI) at 4 μC/cm2 (20 kV) were developed with less than 10% thinning of unexposed resist and with a contrast (γ) of 2. Vertical walls were observed for 1 μm wide lines using P(MMA μ73% MeI) at a dose of about 6 μC/cm2.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Nonwoven super‐hydrophobic fiber membranes have potential applications in oil–water separation and membrane distillation, but fouling negatively impacts both applications. Membranes were prepared from blends comprising poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and random zwitterionic copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) or with sulfobetaine‐2‐vinylpyridine (SB2VP). PVDF imparts mechanical strength to the membrane, while the copolymers enhance fouling resistance. Blend composition was varied by controlling the PVDF‐to‐copolymer ratio. Nonwoven fiber membranes were obtained by electrospinning solutions of PVDF and the copolymers in a mixed solvent of N,N‐dimethylacetamide and acetone. The PVDF crystal phases and crystallinities of the blends were studied using wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). PVDF crystallized preferentially into its polar β‐phase, though its degree of crystallinity was reduced with increased addition of the random copolymers. Thermogravimetry (TG) showed that the degradation temperatures varied systematically with blend composition. PVDF blends with either copolymer showed significant increase of fouling resistance. Membranes prepared from blends containing 10% P(MMA‐ran‐SB2VP) had the highest fouling resistance, with a fivefold decrease in protein adsorption on the surface, compared to homopolymer PVDF. They also exhibited higher pure water flux, and better oil removal in oil–water separation experiments. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The effect of the addition of poly(styrene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) P(S‐co‐GMA) copolymer on the properties of melt blended polylactide/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PLA/PMMA) 80/20 (wt %) composition was studied. In the literature high ductility levels were achieved by melt blending PLA with different additives. However, the gained ductility was counter balanced with drastic drops in strength and modulus values. The novelty of this work was the preparation of PLA‐based blends with polylactide content higher than 75 wt % which showed an impact resistance value improvement of about 60% compared with the neat PLA and maintained similar tensile strength and modulus values as well as glass transition temperature to neat PLA. The addition of only 3 pph of copolymer to PLA/PMMA blend improved the impact resistance almost 100%. The chemical reaction between PLA/PMMA blend and P(S‐co‐GMA) copolymer were analyzed by FTIR, rotational rheometry, and GPC/SEC. Phase structure and morphology were studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Scanning Electronic Microscopy. Tensile and impact properties as well as thermal stability were also studied. Results showed that as the amount of copolymer in the blend was increased then higher was average molecular weight and polydispersity index. After the addition of P(S‐co‐GMA) copolymer to the PLA/PMMA blend the impact resistance, elongation at break and thermal stability were improved while tensile strength and elastic modulus remained almost unaltered. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butyl acrylate‐g‐styrene) graft copolymers were prepared by free‐radical polymerization using a polystyrene macromonomer carrying a methacryloyloxy group at the chain end and they were characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Glass transition temperatures and degradation behavior were determined by thermal analysis. Only a single glass transition temperature was observed for the resulting graft copolymers, indicating the miscibility between the poly(styrene) phase and poly(butyl acrylate) (pBA) phase in the graft copolymer. The incorporation of polystyrene segments in the graft copolymer improved the thermal stability of pBA and enhanced the apparent activation energy for the thermal degradation of pBA. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
