The major issue in the wireless multimedia system design is the selection of a suitable channel sharing media access control (MAC) protocol. The design challenge is to identify a wireless "multimedia capable" MAC protocol that provides a sufficient degree of transparency for many different kinds of services. This protocol should guarantee different quality of service (QoS) parameters for different types of traffic while in the same time achieving high throughput. In this paper a MAC protocol to serve different kinds of traffic, namely voice, data, and, real time variable bit rate (rt-VBR) video is proposed. The transmission time scale is divided into frames. Each frame is subdivided into N time slots. In this protocol, a fixed number of slots M out of 150 time slots are reserved at the beginning of every frame to transmit some of the video packets arriving during the frame interval. The rest of the video packets contend with the voice and data packets for the remaining time slots of this frame as in normal packet reservation multiple access (PRMA). One objective of this paper is to find the optimum value of M allowing the maximum number of voice and data users to share the RF channel with one video user. Another objective is to find the optimum permission probabilities of sending contending voice, data, and video packets allowing the maximum number of users sharing the RF channel. The dropping probability requirement for video is examined.  相似文献

Next generation high capacity wireless networks need to support various types of traffic, including voice, video and data, each of which have different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for successful transmission. This paper presents an advanced reservation packet access protocol BRTDMA (Block Reservation Time Division Multiple Access) that can accommodate voice and data traffic with equal efficiency in a wireless network. The proposed BRTDMA protocol has been designed to operate in a dynamic fashion by allocating resources according to the QoS criteria of voice and data traffic. Most of the existing reservation protocols offers reservation to voice traffic while data packets are transmitted using contention mode. In this paper we propose a block reservation technique to reserve transmission slots for data traffic for a short duration, which minimizes the speech packet loss and reduce the end-to-end delay for wireless data traffic. The optimum block reservation length for data traffic has been studied in a cellular mobile radio environment using a simulation model. Simulation results show that the BRTDMA protocol offers higher traffic capacity than standard PRMA protocol for integrated voice and data traffic and offers flexibility in accommodating multimedia traffic.  相似文献

In this paper, a medium access control protocol is proposed for integrated voice and data services in wireless local networks. Uplink channels for the proposed protocol are composed of time slots with multiple spreading codes per slot based on slotted code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. The proposed protocol uses spreading code sensing and reservation schemes. This protocol gives higher access priority to delay‐sensitive voice traffic than to data traffic. The voice terminal reserves an available spreading code to transmit multiple voice packets during a talkspurt. On the other hand, the data terminal transmits a packet without making a reservation over one of the available spreading codes that are not used by voice terminals. In this protocol, voice packets do not come into collision with data packets. The numerical results show that this protocol can increase the system capacity for voice service by applying the reservation scheme. The performance for data traffic will decrease in the case of high voice traffic load because of its low access priority. But it shows that the data traffic performance can be increased in proportion to the number of spreading codes.  相似文献

This paper presents a terminal‐assisted frame‐based packet reservation multiple access (TAF‐PRMA) protocol, which optimizes random access control between heterogeneous traffic aiming at more efficient voice/data integrated services in dynamic reservation TDMA‐based broadband access networks. In order to achieve a differentiated quality‐of‐service (QoS) guarantee for individual service plus maximal system resource utilization, TAF‐PRMA independently controls the random access parameters such as the lengths of the access regions dedicated to respective service traffic and the corresponding permission probabilities, on a frame‐by‐frame basis. In addition, we have adopted a terminal‐assisted random access mechanism where the voice terminal readjusts a global permission probability from the central controller in order to handle the ‘fair access’ issue resulting from distributed queuing problems inherent in the access network. Our extensive simulation results indicate that TAF‐PRMA achieves significant improvements in terms of voice capacity, delay, and fairness over most of the existing medium access control (MAC) schemes for integrated services.  相似文献

A reservation scheme, named dynamic hybrid partitioning, is proposed for the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol of wireless ATM (WATM) networks operating in Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode. The goal is to improve the performance of the real-time Variable Bit Rate (VBR) voice traffic in networks with mixed voice/data traffic. In most proposed MAC protocols for WATM networks, the reservation phase treats all traffic equally, whether delay-sensitive or not. Hence, delay-sensitive VBR traffic sources have to compete for reservation each time they wake up from idle mode. This causes large and variable channel access delays, and increases the delay and delay variation (jitter) experienced by ATM cells of VBR traffic. In the proposed scheme, the reservation phase of the MAC protocol is dynamically divided into a contention-free partition for delay-sensitive idle VBR traffic, and a contention partition for other traffic. Adaptive algorithms dynamically adjust the partition sizes to minimize the channel bandwidth overhead. Simulation results show that the delay performance of delay-sensitive VBR traffic is improved while minimizing the overhead.  相似文献

To improve the spectrum efficiency of integrated voice and data services in Personal Communication System (PCS), several reservation-type multiple access schemes, such as Packet Reservation Multiple Access (PRMA), Dynamic Time Division Multiple Access (D-TDMA), Resource Auction Multiple Access (RAMA), etc., have been proposed. PRMA uses the data packet itself to make a channel reservation, and is inefficient in that each unsuccessful reservation wastes one slot. However, it does not have a fixed reservation overhead and offers shorter access delay. On the other hand, fixed reservation overhead is unavoidable in both RAMA and D-TDMA. Compared to D-TDMA and PRMA, RAMA is superior in the sense that its slot assignment is independent of the traffic load. But its implementation is difficult. With these observations, a new reservation protocol, called Dynamic Reservation Multiple Access (DRMA), is proposed in this paper. With this new protocol, the success probability of channel access is greatly improved at the expense of slightly increased system complexity. It solves the problem of inefficiency in PRMA, but without introducing the fixed reservation overhead as in D-TDMA and RAMA. In addition, it is more suited to the dynamic behavior of the integrated traffic because there is no fixed boundary between voice and data slots (which is mandatory in D-TDMA and RAMA). Our numerical results indicate that its performance is superior to the existing reservation protocols, especially in the integrated traffic scenario. Moreover, the soft capacity feature is exhibited when the traffic load increases.  相似文献

Mobile satellite systems (MSSs) are expected to play a significant role in providing users with communication services worldwide. In such a context, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations seem to be a good solution to attain a global coverage and to allow the use of low-power lightweight mobile terminals. This paper analyzes the performance of a novel medium access control (MAC) scheme suitable for applications in LEO-MSSs, named packet reservation multiple access with hindering states (PRMA-HS), that has been derived by proper modifications of the well-known PRMA protocol. We envisage a mixed traffic with voice sources and data sources with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. The good behavior of the proposed PRMA-HS scheme is validated by extensive comparisons with the classical PRMA protocol. Finally, it is shown that PRMA-HS efficiently supports integrated voice and data traffic in LEO-MSSs  相似文献

A new medium access control (MAC) protocol for mobile wireless communications is presented and investigated. We explore, via an extensive simulation study, the performance of the protocol when integrating voice and data traffic over two wireless channels, one of medium capacity (referring mostly to outdoor microcellular environments) and one of high capacity (referring to an indoor microcellular environment). Data message arrivals are assumed to occur according to a Poisson process and to vary in length according to a geometric distribution. We evaluate the voice packet dropping probability and access delay, as well as the data packet access and data message transmission delays for various voice and data load conditions. By combining two novel ideas of ours with two useful ideas which have been proposed in other MAC schemes, we are able to remarkably improve the efficiency of a previously proposed MAC scheme [5], and obtain very high voice sources multiplexing results along with most satisfactory voice and data performance and quality of service (QoS) requirements servicing. Our two novel ideas are the sharing of certain request slots among voice and data terminals with priority given to voice, and the use of a fully dynamic low-voice-load mechanism.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new protocol for the integration of voice and video transmission over the packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) system that is a modification of reservation‐ALOHA protocol. We focus on low bit‐rate video applications like video conferencing and visual telephony for wireless communications. The ITU–T H.263 standard provides a solution to the need for low bit‐rate video compression under 64 kbytes/s. The proposed protocol assumes that each voice terminal follows a traffic pattern of talk spurts and silent gaps with fixed permission probability (p=0.3), and each video terminal has the higher permission probability (p=1) to access the available slot based on ITU–T H.263 standard. Again, we present a ‘pseudo‐reservation’ scheme to release slots reserved by video terminals according to the contents of each video transmission buffer, and the active voice terminals can temporarily access the additional slots to improve the performance without sacrificing the video capacity of the system. The packet dropping probability of the active voice terminals and bandwidth utilization of the system are superior to the original PRMA, as indicated in simulation results. A new medium access control (MAC) protocol for mobile wireless communications is presented and investigated. We explore, via an extensive simulation study, the performance of the protocol when integrating voice, video and data packet traffic over a wireless channel of high capacity (referring to an indoor microcellular environment). Depending on the number of video users admitted into the system, our protocol varies: a) the request bandwidth dedicated to resolving the voice users contention, and b) the probability with which the base station grants information slots to voice users, in order to preserve full priority for video traffic. We evaluate the maximum voice capacity and mean access delay, as well as the aggregate channel throughput, for various voice and video load conditions, and the maximum voice capacity, aggregate channel throughput and average data message delays, for various video, voice and data load conditions. As proven by the comparison with a recently introduced efficient MAC scheme (DPRMA), when integrating voice and video traffic our scheme obtains higher voice capacity and aggregate channel throughput. When integrating all three traffic types, our scheme achieves high aggregate channel throughput in all cases of traffic load.  相似文献

For efficient code sharing among users, a wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol for CDMA networks is proposed, which supports connection-oriented, as well as connectionless, services and provides the various bit rates needed for the integrated multimedia services. The proposed MAC protocol allows mobile terminals to use multiple slots and spreading codes based on contention and reservation. Optimum frequency resources are allocated to the connection-oriented and connectionless services with various bit rates. Waiting and response times in the first contention are reduced, and the overall mean delay time is typically minimized in the case of connectionless bulky traffic  相似文献

Dynamic reservation TDMA protocol for wireless ATM networks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A dynamic reservation time division multiple access (DR-TDMA) control protocol that extends the capabilities of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks over the wireless channel is proposed in this paper. DR-TDMA combines the advantages of distributed access and centralized control for transporting constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate (VBR), and available bit rate (ABR) traffic efficiently over a wireless channel. The contention slots access for reservation requests is governed by the framed pseudo-Bayesian priority (FPBP) Aloha protocol that provides different access priorities to the control packets in order to improve the quality-of-service (QoS) offered to time sensitive connections. DR-TDMA also features a novel integrated resource allocation algorithm that efficiently schedules terminals' reserved access to the wireless ATM channel by considering their requested bandwidth and QoS. Integration of CBR, voice, VBR, data, and control traffic over the wireless ATM channel using the proposed DR-TDMA protocol is considered in this paper. Simulation results are presented to show that the protocol respects the required QoS of each traffic category while providing a highly efficient utilization of approximately 96% for the wireless ATM channel  相似文献

We propose and analyze, from a performance viewpoint, a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The protocol, named Prioritized-Access with Centralized-Control (PACC), supports integrated traffics by guaranteeing an almost complete utilization of network resources. The proposed protocol combines random access for signalling, with collision-free access to the transmission channel. The transmission channel is assumed to be slotted, with slots grouped into frames. Access to transmission slots is controlled by a centralized scheduler which manages a multiclass queue containing the users' requests to access the transmission channel. Three classes of users are assumed: voice traffic (voice), data traffic with real-time constraints (high-priority data), and classical data traffic (low-priority data). A priority mechanism ensures that speech users have the highest priority in accessing the idle slots, since speech packets have a more demanding delay constraint. The remaining channel bandwidth is shared fairly among the high-priority data terminals. The low-priority data terminals use the slots left empty by the other classes. Specifically, access to transmission slots is controlled by the centralized scheduler by managing a transmission cycle for each class of terminals. The voice-terminals cycle has a constant length equal to one frame, while the lengths of the data-terminals cycles are random variables which depend on the number of active voice and data terminals. In this paper we show that the proposed scheme can support the same maximum number of voice terminals as an ideal scheduler, while guaranteeing an almost complete utilization of network capacity. In addition, via a performance analysis, we verify that by limiting the number of real-time data terminals in the network this class of traffic can be statistically guaranteed access delays in the order of 200–300 msec. Hence, the QoS the network gives to the real-time data terminals makes this service suitable for real-time applications such as alarms or low bit rate video. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The IEEE 802.16 standard is gaining broad consideration to serve the expanding demand for broadband access networks. In this standard, the best effort traffic uses the reservation multiple access control (MAC) mechanism, which is widely adopted in recent broadband network technologies. The goal of this paper is to study the performance of the MAC protocol of the best effort traffic in the IEEE 802.16 standard with emphasis on the size of the reservation period. We use a two‐stage Markov chain model to capture all possible events on the reservation and service periods. This allows the computation of the inflow and outflow of bandwidth requests (BWRs) and their associated data packets which leads to the delay and throughput formulas. By means of illustrative examples and numerical results, validated through simulation, we investigate the key importance of the size of reservation period. We highlight potential performance improvement, through opportunistic dynamic control of the size of the reservation period to enhance the performance of reservation MAC protocol. In this paper, we explore, via an extensive simulation study, the performance of a new medium access-control (MAC) protocol when integrating voice, video, and e-mail data packet traffic over a wireless channel of high capacity, with errors. Depending on the number of video users admitted into the system, our protocol varies (a) the request bandwidth dedicated to resolving the voice users contention and (b) the probability with which the base station grants information slots to voice users, in order to preserve full priority for video traffic. We evaluate the voice and video packet-dropping probabilities for various voice and video load conditions and the average e-mail data message delays. Our scheme achieves high aggregate channel throughput in all cases of traffic load despite the introduction of errors in the system.  相似文献

Multidimensional packet reservation multiple access is proposed as a medium-access control (MAC) strategy for the uplink channel of the UTRA (UMTS terrestrial radio access) time-division/code-division multiple-access (TD/CDMA) mode to benefit from efficient statistical multiplexing on the large common pool of available resources (i.e., slots defined both in time and code domain). A prioritized Bayesian broadcast algorithm is derived to stabilize multidimensional packet reservation multiple access (MD PRMA) and to allow for access delay discrimination of four different access classes. Access delay spread can be selected, and trading voice-dropping ratio against data-access delay is possible. To control multiple-access interference, Bayesian broadcast can be combined with load-based access control. The performance of both frequency-division duplex (FDD) and time-division duplex (TDD) mode is evaluated, the latter particularly relevant for TD/CDMA. For mixed voice, Worldwide Web (WWW) browsing, and e-mail traffic, the UMTS WWW model is used, while the e-mail traffic model is derived here  相似文献

This paper proposes a new medium access protocol (MAC) protocol for futurewireless multimedia personal communication systems, denoted hybrid andadaptive multiple access control (HAMAC) protocol. The HAMAC protocolintegrates fixed assignment TDMA protocol, reservation-based protocols, andcontention-based protocols into a single wireless network so as tosimultaneously and efficiently support various classes of traffic such asconstant-bit-rate (CBR), variable-bit-rate (VBR), and available-bit-rate (ABR)traffic. In particular, the HAMAC protocol uses a novel preservationslot technique to overcome the packet contention overhead in packetreservation multiple access (PRMA) like protocols, while keeping mostisochronous service features of TDMA protocols to serve voice and CBR trafficstreams. A preservation slot is a very short slot which is used torepresent a CBR connection when the traffic in the CBR connection is in asilent period in which there is no meaningful data to transmit. Due to thevery short length of the preservation slot, it only takes minimalportion of the bandwidth pre-allocated to the CBR connection, so that theremaining bandwidth can be freed for other connections to use. When the CBRsource becomes active again, the preservation slot is replaced bynormal data slots without any reservation operation, extra delay, orsignificant bandwidth loss. Consequently, the guaranteed service andsimplified signaling features of TDMA protocols, together with the adaptivebandwidth allocation features of PRMA-like protocols, are both realized in theHAMAC protocol. We have analyzed the performance of the HAMAC protocol usingextensive simulations. The results show that the HAMAC protocol can achievevery low loss rates for various multimedia traffic with stringent quality ofservice (QoS) requirements and outperforms state-of-the-art PRMA-likeprotocols. As a result, the HAMAC protocol appears to be a good candidate forfuture generation multimedia personal communication systems.  相似文献

Future mobile ad hoc networks are expected to support voice traffic. The requirement for small delay and jitter of voice traffic poses a significant challenge for medium access control (MAC) in such networks. User mobility presents unique difficulties in this context due to the associated dynamic path attenuation. In this paper, a MAC scheme for mobile ad hoc networks supporting voice traffic is proposed. With the aid of a low‐power probe prior to DATA transmissions, resource reservation is achieved in a distributed manner, thus leading to small packet transmission delay and jitter. The proposed scheme can automatically adapt to dynamic path attenuation in a mobile environment. Statistical multiplexing of on/off voice traffic can also be achieved by partial resource reservation for off voice flows. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
