The emergence of nanomaterials in the past decades has greatly advanced modern energy storage devices. Nanomaterials can offer high capacity and fast kinetics yet are prone to rapid morphological evolution and degradation. As a result, they are often hybridized with a stable framework in order to gain stability and fully utilize its advantages. However, candidates for such framework materials are rather limited, with carbon, conductive polymers, and Ti‐based oxides being the only choices; note these are all inactive or intercalation compounds. Conventionally, alloying‐/conversion‐type electrodes, which are thought to be electrochemically unstable by themselves, have never been considered as framework materials. This concept is challenged. Successful application of conversion‐type MnO nanorod as a anode framework for high‐capacity Mo2C/MoOx nanoparticles has been demonstrated in sodium‐ion batteries. Surprisingly, it can stably deliver 110 mAh g?1 under extremely high rate of 8000 mA g?1 (≈70 C) over 40 000 cycles with no capacity decay. More generally, this is considered as a proof of concept and much more alloying‐/conversion‐type materials are expected to be explored for such applications.  相似文献

Sodium‐ion batteries are widely considered as promising energy storage systems for large‐scale applications, but their relatively low energy density hinders further practical applications. Developing high‐voltage cathode materials is an effective approach to increase the overall energy density of sodium‐ion batteries. When cut‐off voltage is elevated over 4.3 V, however, the cathode becomes extremely unstable due to structural transformations as well as metal dissolution into the electrolytes. In this work, the cyclic stability of P2‐Na0.66(Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13)O2 (MCN) electrode at a cut‐off voltage of 4.5 V is successfully improved by using ultrathin metal oxide surface coatings (Al2O3, ZrO2, and TiO2) deposited by an atomic layer deposition technique. The MCN electrode coated with the Al2O3 layer exhibits higher capacity retention among the MCN electrodes. Moreover, the rate performance of the MCN electrode is greatly improved by the metal oxide coatings in the order of TiO2 < Al2O3 < ZrO2, due to increased fracture toughness and electrical conductivity of the metal oxide coating layers. A ZrO2‐coated MCN electrode shows a discharge capacity of 83 mAh g?1 at 2.4 A g?1, in comparison to 61 mAh g?1 for a pristine MCN electrode. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis disclose the reduced charge transfer resistance from 1421 to 760.2 Ω after cycles, suggesting that the metal oxide coating layer can effectively minimize the undesirable phase transition, buffer inherent stress and strain between the binder, cathode, and current collector, and avoid volumetric changes, thus increasing the cyclic stability of the MCN electrode.  相似文献

Na3V2(PO4)3 is one of the most important cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries, delivering about two Na extraction/insertion from/into the unit structure. To understand the mechanism of sodium storage, a detailed structure of rhombohedral Na3V2(PO4)3 and its sodium extracted phase of NaV2(PO4)3 are investigated at the atomic scale using a variety of advanced techniques. It is found that two different Na sites (6b, M1 and 18e, M2) with different coordination environments co‐exist in Na3V2(PO4)3, whereas only one Na site (6b, M1) exists in NaV2(PO4)3. When Na is extracted from Na3V2(PO4)3 to form NaV2(PO4)3, Na+ occupying the M2 site (CN = 8) is extracted and the rest of the Na remains at M1 site (CN = 6). In addition, the Na atoms are not randomly distributed, possibly with an ordered arrangement in M2 sites locally for Na3V2(PO4)3. Na+ ions at the M1 sites in Na3V2(PO4)3 tend to remain immobilized, suggesting a direct M2‐to‐M2 conduction pathway. Only Na occupying the M2 sites can be extracted, suggesting about two Na atoms able to be extracted from the Na3V2(PO4)3 structure.  相似文献

The development of high energy/power density sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) is still challenged by the high redox potential of Na/Na+ and large radius of Na+ ions, thus requiring extensive further improvement to, in particular, enhance the capacity and voltage of cathode materials. Among the various types of cathodes, the polyanion cathodes have emerged as the most pragmatic option due to their outstanding thermostability, unique inductive effect, and flexible structures. In this Review, a critical overview of the design principles and engineering strategies of polyanion cathodes that could have a pivotal role in developing high energy/power density SIBs are presented. Specifically, the engineering of polyanion cathode materials for higher voltage and specific capacity to increase energy density is discussed. The way in which morphology control, architectural design, and electrode processing have been developed to increase power density for SIBs is also analyzed. Finally, the remaining challenges and the future research direction of this field are presented.  相似文献

Layered transition metal oxides (TMOs) are appealing cathode candidates for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) by virtue of their facile 2D Na+ diffusion paths and high theoretical capacities but suffer from poor cycling stability. Herein, taking P2‐type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 as an example, it is demonstrated that the hierarchical engineering of porous nanofibers assembled by nanoparticles can effectively boost the reaction kinetics and stabilize the structure. The P2‐Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 nanofibers exhibit exceptional rate capability (166.7 mA h g?1 at 0.1 C with 73.4 mA h g?1 at 20 C) and significantly improved cycle life (≈81% capacity retention after 500 cycles) as cathode materials for SIBs. The highly reversible structure evolution and Ni/Mn valence change during sodium insertion/extraction are verified by in operando X‐ray diffraction and ex situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The facilitated electrode process kinetics are demonstrated by an additional study using the electrochemical measurements and density functional theory computations. More impressively, the prototype Na‐ion full battery built with a Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 nanofibers cathode and hard carbon anode delivers a promising energy density of 212.5 Wh kg?1. The concept of designing a fibrous framework composed of small nanograins offers a new and generally applicable strategy for enhancing the Na‐storage performance of layered TMO cathode materials.  相似文献

A sodium‐ion battery operating at room temperature is of great interest for large‐scale stationary energy storage because of its intrinsic cost advantage. However, the development of a high capacity cathode with high energy density remains a great challenge. In this work, sodium super ionic conductor‐structured Na3V2?xCrx(PO4)3 is achieved through the sol–gel method; Na3V1.5Cr0.5(PO4)3 is demonstrated to have a capacity of 150 mAh g?1 with reversible three‐electron redox reactions after insertion of a Na+, consistent with the redox couples of V2+/3+, V3+/4+, and V4+/5+. Moreover, a symmetric sodium‐ion full cell utilizing Na3V1.5Cr0.5(PO4)3 as both the cathode and anode exhibits an excellent rate capability and cyclability with a capacity of 70 mAh g?1 at 1 A g?1. Ex situ X‐ray diffraction analysis and in situ impedance measurements are performed to reveal the sodium storage mechanism and the structural evolution during cycling.  相似文献

The development of new insertion electrodes in sodium‐ion batteries requires an in‐depth understanding of the relationship between electrochemical performance and the structural evolution during cycling. To date in situ synchrotron X‐ray and neutron diffraction methods appear to be the only probes of in situ electrode evolution at high rates, a critical condition for battery development. Here, the structural evolution of the recently synthesized O3‐phase of Na2/3Fe2/3Mn1/3O2 is reported under relatively high current rates. The evolution of the phases, their lattice parameters, and phase fractions, and the sodium content in the crystal structure as a function of the charge/discharge process are shown. It is found that the O3‐phase persists throughout the charge/discharge cycle but undergoes a series of two‐phase and solid‐solution transitions subtly modifying the sodium content and atomic positions but keeping the overall space‐group symmetry (structural motif). In addition, for the first time, evidence of a structurally characterized region is shown that undergoes two‐phase and solid‐solution phase transitions simultaneously. The Mn/Fe–O bond lengths, c lattice parameter evolution, and the distance between the Mn/FeO6 layers are shown to concertedly change in a favorable manner for Na+ insertion/extraction. The exceptional electrochemical performance of this electrode can be related in part to the electrode maintaining the O3‐phase throughout the charge/discharge process.  相似文献

Surface stabilization of cathode materials is urgent for guaranteeing long‐term cyclability, and is important in Na cells where a corrosive Na‐based electrolyte is used. The surface of P2‐type layered Na2/3[Ni1/3Mn2/3]O2 is modified with ionic, conducting sodium phosphate (NaPO3) nanolayers, ≈10 nm in thickness, via melt‐impregnation at 300 °C; the nanolayers are autogenously formed from the reaction of NH4H2PO4 with surface sodium residues. Although the material suffers from a large anisotropic change in the c‐axis due to transformation from the P2 to O2 phase above 4 V versus Na+/Na, the NaPO3‐coated Na2/3[Ni1/3Mn2/3]O2/hard carbon full cell exhibits excellent capacity retention for 300 cycles, with 73% retention. The surface NaPO3 nanolayers positively impact the cell performance by scavenging HF and H2O in the electrolyte, leading to less formation of byproducts on the surface of the cathodes, which lowers the cell resistance, as evidenced by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time‐of‐flight secondary‐ion mass spectroscopy. Time‐resolved in situ high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction study reveals that the NaPO3 coating layer is delayed for decomposition to Mn3O4, thereby suppressing oxygen release in the highly desodiated state, enabling delay of exothermic decomposition. The findings presented herein are applicable to the development of high‐voltage cathode materials for sodium batteries.  相似文献

Considering the promising electrochemical performance of the recently reported pyrophosphate family in lithium ion batteries as well as the increasing importance of sodium ion batteries (SIBs) for emerging large‐scale applications, here, the crystal structure, electrochemical properties, and thermal stability of Na2FeP2O7, the first example ever reported in the pyrophosphate family for SIBs, are investigated. Na2FeP2O7 maintains well‐defined channel structures (triclinic framework under the P1 space group) and exhibits a reversible capacity of ≈90 mAh g?1 with good cycling performance. Both quasi‐equilibrium measurements and first‐principles calculations consistently indicate that Na2FeP2O7 undergoes two kinds of reactions over the entire voltage range of 2.0–4.5 V (vs Na/Na+): a single‐phase reaction around 2.5 V and a series of two‐phase reactions in the voltage range of 3.0–3.25 V. Na2FeP2O7 shows excellent thermal stability up to 500 °C, even in the partially desodiated state (NaFeP2O7), which suggests its safe character, a property that is very critical for large‐scale battery applications.  相似文献

This work studies for the first time the metallic 1T MoS2 sandwich grown on graphene tube as a freestanding intercalation anode for promising sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Sodium is earth‐abundant and readily accessible. Compared to lithium, the main challenge of sodium‐ion batteries is its sluggish ion diffusion kinetic. The freestanding, porous, hollow structure of the electrode allows maximum electrolyte accessibility to benefit the transportation of Na+ ions. Meanwhile, the metallic MoS2 provides excellent electron conductivity. The obtained 1T MoS2 electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance: a high reversible capacity of 313 mAh g?1 at a current density of 0.05 A g?1 after 200 cycles and a high rate capability of 175 mAh g?1 at 2 A g?1. The underlying mechanism of high rate performance of 1T MoS2 for SIBs is the high electrical conductivity and excellent ion accessibility. This study sheds light on using the 1T MoS2 as a novel anode for SIBs.  相似文献

Anatase TiO2 is considered as one of the promising anodes for sodium‐ion batteries because of its large sodium storage capacities with potentially low cost. However, the precise reaction mechanisms and the interplay between surface properties and electrochemical performance are still not elucidated. Using multimethod analyses, it is herein demonstrated that the TiO2 electrode undergoes amorphization during the first sodiation and the amorphous phase exhibits pseudocapacitive sodium storage behaviors in subsequent cycles. It is also shown that the pseudocapacitive sodium storage performance is sensitive to the nature of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers. For the first time, it is found that ether‐based electrolytes enable the formation of thin (≈2.5 nm) and robust SEI layers, in contrast to the thick (≈10 nm) and growing SEI from conventional carbonate‐based electrolytes. First principle calculations suggest that the higher lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies of ether solvents/ion complexes are responsible for the difference. TiO2 electrodes in ether‐based electrolyte present an impressive capacity of 192 mAh g?1 at 0.1 A g?1 after 500 cycles, much higher than that in carbonate‐based electrolyte. This work offers the clarified picture of electrochemical sodiation mechanisms of anatase TiO2 and guides on strategies about interfacial control for high performance anodes.  相似文献

Urchin‐like CoSe2 assembled by nanorods has been synthesized via simple solvothermal route and has been first applied as an anode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) with ether‐based electrolytes. The CoSe2 delivers excellent sodiation and desodiation properties when using 1 m NaCF3SO3 in diethyleneglycol dimethylether as an electrolyte and cycling between 0.5 and 3.0 V. A high discharge capacity of 0.410 Ah g?1 is obtained at 1 A g?1 after 1800 cycles, corresponding to a capacity retention of 98.6% calculated from the 30th cycle. Even at an ultrahigh rate of 50 A g?1, the capacity still maintains 0.097 Ah g?1. The reaction mechanism of the as‐prepared CoSe2 is also investigated. The results demonstrate that at discharged 1.56 V, insertion reaction occurs, while two conversion reactions take place at the second and third plateaus around 0.98 and 0.65 V. During the charge process, Co first reacts with Na2Se to form NaxCoSe2 and then turns back to CoSe2. In addition to Na/CoSe2 half cells, Na3V2(PO4)3/CoSe2 full cell with excessive amount of Na3V2(PO4)3 has been studied. The full cell exhibits a reversible capacity of 0.380 Ah g?1. This work definitely enriches the possibilities for anode materials for SIBs with high performance.  相似文献

In this work, a full‐cell sodium‐ion battery (SIB) with a high specific energy approaching 300 Wh kg?1 is realized using a sodium vanadium fluorophosphate (Na3V2(PO4)2F3, NVPF) cathode and a tin phosphide (SnPx) anode, despite both electrode materials having greatly unbalanced specific capacities. The use of a cathode employing an areal loading more than eight times larger than that of the anode can be achieved by designing a nanostructured nanosized NVPF (n‐NVPF) cathode with well‐defined particle size, porosity, and conductivity. Furthermore, the high rate capability and high potential window of the full‐cell can be obtained by tuning the Sn/P ratio (4/3, 1/1, and 1/2) and the nanostructure of an SnPx/carbon composite anode. As a result, the full‐cell SIBs employing the nanostructured n‐NVPF cathode and the SnPx/carbon composite anode (Sn/P = 1/1) exhibit outstanding specific energy (≈280 Wh kg?1(cathode+anode)) and energy efficiency (≈78%); furthermore, the results are comparable to those of state‐of‐the‐art lithium‐ion batteries.  相似文献

Bismuth (Bi) is an attractive material as anodes for both sodium‐ion batteries (NIBs) and potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs), because it has a high theoretical gravimetric capacity (386 mAh g?1) and high volumetric capacity (3800 mAh L?1). The main challenges associated with Bi anodes are structural degradation and instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) resulting from the huge volume change during charge/discharge. Here, a multicore–shell structured Bi@N‐doped carbon (Bi@N‐C) anode is designed that addresses these issues. The nanosized Bi spheres are encapsulated by a conductive porous N‐doped carbon shell that not only prevents the volume expansion during charge/discharge but also constructs a stable SEI during cycling. The Bi@N‐C exhibits unprecedented rate capability and long cycle life for both NIBs (235 mAh g?1 after 2000 cycles at 10 A g?1) and KIBs (152 mAh g?1 at 100 A g?1). The kinetic analysis reveals the outstanding electrochemical performance can be attributed to significant pseudocapacitance behavior upon cycling.  相似文献

With the unprecedentedly increasing demand for renewable and clean energy sources, the sodium‐ion battery (SIB) is emerging as an alternative or complementary energy storage candidate to the present commercial lithium‐ion battery due to the abundance and low cost of sodium resources. Layered transition metal oxides and Prussian blue analogs are reviewed in terms of their commercial potential as cathode materials for SIBs. The recent progress in research on their half cells and full cells for the ultimate application in SIBs are summarized. In addition, their electrochemical performance, suitability for scaling up, cost, and environmental concerns are compared in detail with a brief outlook on future prospects. It is anticipated that this review will inspire further development of layered transition metal oxides and Prussian blue analogs for SIBs, especially for their emerging commercialization.  相似文献

Room‐temperature Na‐ion batteries (NIBs) have recently attracted attention as potential alternatives to current Li‐ion batteries (LIBs). The natural abundance of sodium and the similarity between the electrochemical properties of NIBs and LIBs make NIBs well suited for applications requiring low cost and long‐term reliability. Here, the first successful synthesis of a series of Na3(VO1?x PO4)2F1+2x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) compounds as a new family of high‐performance cathode materials for NIBs is reported. The Na3(VO1?x PO4)2F1+2x series can function as high‐performance cathodes for NIBs with high energy density and good cycle life, although the redox mechanism varies depending on the composition. The combined first‐principles calculations and experimental analysis reveal the detailed structural and electrochemical mechanisms of the various compositions in solid solutions of Na3(VOPO4)2F and Na3V2(PO4)2F3. The comparative data for the Na y (VO1?x PO4)2F1+2x electrodes show a clear relationship among V3+/V4+/V5+ redox reactions, Na+?Na+ interactions, and Na+ intercalation mechanisms in NIBs. The new family of high‐energy cathode materials reported here is expected to spur the development of low‐cost, high‐performance NIBs.  相似文献

Graphene has been widely used as conformal nanobuilding blocks to improve the electrochemical performance of layered metal sulfides (MoS2, WS2, SnS, and SnS2) as anode materials for sodium‐ion batteries. However, it still lacks in‐depth understanding of the synergistic effect between these layered sulfides and graphene, which contributes to the enhanced electroactivity for sodium‐ion batteries. Here, MoS2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanocomposites with intimate two‐dimensional heterointerfaces are prepared by a facile one‐pot hydrothermal method. The heterointerfacial area can be effectively tuned by changing the ratio of MoS2 to RGO. When used as anode materials for sodium‐ion batteries, the synergistic effect contributing to the enhanced reversible capacity of MoS2/RGO nanocomposites is closely related with the heterointerfacial area. The computational results demonstrate that Na prefers to be adsorbed on MoS2 in the MoS2/RGO heterostructure rather than intercalate into the MoS2/RGO heterointerface. Interestingly, the MoS2/RGO heterointerfaces can significantly increase the electronic conductivity of MoS2, store more Na ions, while maintaining the high diffusion mobility of Na atoms on MoS2 surface and high electron transfer efficiency from Na to MoS2. It is expected that the efforts to establish the correlation between the two‐dimensional heterointerface and the electrochemical sodium‐ion storage performance offer fundamental understanding for the rational design of layered metal sulfides/graphene composites as high‐performance electrode materials for sodium‐ion batteries.  相似文献

Potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) are emerging as one of the most promising candidates for large‐scale energy storage owing to the natural abundance of the materials required for their fabrication and the fact that their intercalation mechanism is identical to that of lithium‐ion batteries. However, the larger ionic radius of K+ is likely to induce larger volume expansion and sluggish kinetics, resulting in low specific capacity and unsatisfactory cycle stability. A new Ni/Mn‐based layered oxide, P2‐type K0.44Ni0.22Mn0.78O2, is designed and synthesized. A cathode designed using this material delivers a high specific capacity of 125.5 mAh g?1 at 10 mA g?1, good cycle stability with capacity retention of 67% over 500 cycles and fast kinetic properties. In situ X‐ray diffraction recorded for the initial two cycles reveals single solid‐solution processes under P2‐type framework with small volume change of 1.5%. Moreover, a cathode electrolyte interphase layer is observed on the surface of the electrode after cycling with possible components of K2CO3, RCO2K, KOR, KF, etc. A full cell using K0.44Ni0.22Mn0.78O2 as the cathode and soft carbon as the anode also exhibits exceptional performance, with capacity retention of 90% over 500 cycles as well as superior rate performance. These findings suggest P2‐K0.44Ni0.22Mn0.78O2 is a promising candidate as a high‐performance cathode for KIBs.  相似文献
