The objective of the present work is to find the possibility of reducing the high initial moisture content of wet paddy using a small-scale, low-cost pneumatic conveying dryer that can be provided for each farming household. The dryer without a cyclone equipped at the exit of the dryer is studied and the data obtained from this system is compared with those obtained previously from the dryer with a cyclone. Parametric effects of the following variables are examined: velocity of drying air from 20 to 30 m/s, feed rate of rough rice from 150 to 350 kg/h, and drying air temperature from 35 to 70°C. From the experimental results it is found that the drying process with and without a cyclone are able to lead to very rapid drying without any grain quality problems such as cracks in the rice kernel. For the same experimental conditions, the cyclone-equipped dryer gives around 1% higher decrease of moisture content, 2°C higher average surface temperature of paddy, 3-4% higher average percentage of head rice yield, and 2 kg/h higher average evaporation rate. However, the energy consumption per evaporated mass of water is 20-30% lower than the non-cyclone-equipped dryer.  相似文献

This article studies the possibility of reducing the high initial moisture content of wet rough rice using a small-scale low-cost pneumatic conveying dryer as a first stage dryer. The parameters investigated are final moisture content, surface temperature of rough rice, head rice yield, drying rate, power consumption per unit mass of evaporated water, and physical characteristics of rice. Parametric effects of the following variables are examined: velocity of drying air from 20 to 30 m/s, feed rate of rough rice from 150 to 350 kg/h, initial moisture content from 22 to 26% (wet basis), and drying air temperature from 35 to 70°C. From the experimental results, it is found that this drying method can be used for fresh rough rice with an initial moisture content of over 24% (wet basis). The drying process is able to lead to very rapid drying without any grain quality problems such as cracks in the rice kernel. The moisture content can be reduced to approximately 18% (wet basis) or about 5–6% of the initial moisture content within 3–4 s. The optimal drying air temperature is in the range of 50 to 60°C. A comparison of pneumatic conveying drying data obtained from the present study with fluidized bed drying data reported in the open literature is also discussed.  相似文献

The paper presents new data for thin-layer drying characteristics of Thai long grain rough rice measured under various conditions of drying air temperature (35 to 60 °C), drying air relative humidity (30 to 70 % ) and the initial moisture content of rough rice (20 to 40 % dry basis). Empirical equations were developed using the instantaneous weight, the weight loss and drying time, with temperature, relative humidity and initial moisture content of rough rice as the independent variables. A computer program was developed to simulate the deep-bed drying process. The thin-layer drying equation developed before was used in the computer simulation. Experimental data from the fixed bed dryer were compared with the results from the calculation.  相似文献

The main objective of this work is to study the rice whiteness and paddy qualities of rice in terms of hardness, stickiness, cohesiveness, and germination of rice. The prediction results of moisture content and whiteness are compared with the experimental results using a near-equilibrium drying model, which is modified by including whiteness kinetics of rice kernel. The long grain rice (Suphanburi 1 high amylose indica variety), which consists of 27% amylose was used for all experiments. The experiments were carried out at the average ambient temperature range of 28.6-30.8°C, average relative humidity of 65.2-80.6% with a fixed bed depth of 1.0 m. Specific air flow rates of 0.65 and 0.93 m3/min-m3 of paddy were forced continuously through the paddy bulk at initial moisture contents of 18.5% and 20.1% wet basis, respectively. The desired final moisture content of paddy is about 13.3 ± 0.6% wet basis. The results show that drying rate and the whiteness predictions are in good agreement with those from the experiments. The in-store drying using ambient air condition did not produce notable effect on the rice whiteness, head rice yield, and the percentage of paddy germination. However, the hardness, stickiness, and cohesiveness of rice were changed.  相似文献

The diiffusion model describing internal diiffusion of moisture within a grain kernel during drying and tempering stages was incorporated in the cross-flow drying model to simulate the recirculating circular grain dryer with drying and tempering stages. Experiments were conducted on an experimental prototype recirculating circular grain dryer for wheat and rough rice drying. The simulated grain temperature and moisture content were compared with the experimental data of drying wheat and rough rice, the maximum deviation of the outlet grain temperature was 5°C and the maximum deviation ofthe final grain moisture content was 0.3% w.b. The simulating program for recirculating circular grain dryer was used for analyzing the effects of structure parameters and hot air parameters on the dryer performance. Recommendations for design of the recirculating circular grain dryers are drawn from the experiments and simulation.  相似文献

The drying and hydrodynamic characteristics of iron ore particles in a vertical pneumatic conveying dryer (0.078 m ID × 6.0 m high) have been determined. The pressure drop decreases along the height at the acceleration region, while it remains constant irrespective of the height in the fully developed region. The degree of particle drying in the dilute pneumatic region increases with increasing superficial inlet gas velocity at constant inlet gas temperature and solid injection rate. However, it decreases with increasing solid injection rates at identical superficial inlet gas velocity and inlet gas temperature. The degree of particle drying increases from 48.6 to 82.5% as the inlet gas temperature increases from 100 to 400 °C.  相似文献

The performance and operating characteristics of a low temperature re-circulating cabinet dryer using a dehumidifier loop were studied using alfalfa. Chopped alfalfa, initially at 70% moisture content, was dried to 10% moisture content in the dryer. Two dryer setups were used. The dryers in each case had a partitioned cabinet with trays of material on one side and a stack of one or two small household dehumidifiers on the other side. Air was re-circulated through the material from bottom to the top and back through the dehumidifiers. Two drying configurations were tested. In one, the material was left on the trays until drying was complete (batch or fixed tray drying). In the other configuration, the trays were moved from top to bottom, introducing a new tray at the top while removing an old tray from bottom. Drying air temperature ranged from 25 to 45°C. The average air velocity through the material was 0.38 m/s. Alfalfa chops dried in 5 h in the fixed tray drying and in 4 h in the moving tray drying. The specific moisture extraction rate ranged from 0.35 to 1.02 kg/kWh for batch drying and stayed at an average value of 0.50 kg/kWh for continuous/moving tray drying.  相似文献

This article describes the testing of a pilot-scale superheated-steam fluidized-bed dryer for parboiled rice along with development of a mathematical model for predicting the changes in temperature of steam and moisture content of parboiled rice during drying. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the superficial velocity of steam from 1.3 to 1.5 times of the minimum fluidization velocity had no significant effect on the drying rates of rice. The energy consumption for reducing the moisture content of paddy from 0.43 to 0.22 kg/kg dry basis was approximately 7.2 MJ/kg water evaporated. Drying temperature caused the appreciable change of parboiled rice qualities as characterized by water adsorption, whiteness and pasting viscosities, white belly, and hardness. Soaking paddy at a temperature of 70°C for 7-8 h before drying was sufficiently enough for producing parboiled rice, with no white belly. The gelatinization of starch during drying resulted in higher head rice yield of the product as compared to that of raw paddy.  相似文献

The dryer is required for drying of grain as well as drying of the processed products in small catchment agro processing centers in the developing world. However, due to varied material characteristics of grain and secondary processed product, two entirely different types of dryers are required. The grain is dried in a recirculatory dryer, whereas processed product is dried in a tray dryer, where it is frequently mixed and trays are also intermittently changed. To avoid the need for two dryers, a novel design of a low-cost hot air dryer was developed where just by changing the trays the dryer can be converted from an LSU grain dryer to a tray-type product dryer. The dryer was tested for drying soybean grain as well as processed soy products like blanched soybean dal and soyflakes. The capacity of the dryer was 100 kg/batch in a tray dryer with each tray accommodating 10 kg of wet material. In case of LSU mode, the capacity of the dryer was 250 kg of grain per batch. The drying time required was 5 h for 250 kg of wet soybean from 24 to 10% moisture content, whereas in a tray dryer 100 kg blanched soybean dal was dried from 60 to 10% in 5 h and 100 kg of soyflakes from 25% moisture content to 10% moisture in 1.75 h. The cost of the dryer is estimated at US$580.00 and it can be fabricated in a moderately equipped workshop in developing countries.  相似文献

The apparent density of bamboo (Bambusa phyllostachys) shoot was investigated at a moisture content range of 10-92% wet basis by weighing the product in air and determining the buoyancy force in toluene. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) unveiled that moisture content significantly affected apparent density at 95% confidence level. The true density of the bamboo shoot was determined by grinding the dried sample to exclude all internal pores and using density bottles. The experimental data fitted well to a general density equation for fruits and vegetables proposed by Lozano et al. (1983) and to a second order polynomial (SOP) model. The internal porosity generated during drying varied in a nonlinear (quadratic) fashion. Shrinkage at different moisture content levels was measured by evaluating the dimensional changes in bamboo shoot slabs (5.0 × 3.2 × 1.8 cm) by drying in a convection oven and a tray dryer operating at 70°C and 7.2% relative humidity. Shrinkage was affected statistically by decreasing moisture content at 95% confidence level. Shrinkage was compared with available models in literature and found to be oriented based on fiber direction and distinctly different from the isotropic volume change in fruits and vegetables.  相似文献

The objectives of this research are to design, construct and test a mobile fluidized bed paddy dryer with a drying capacity of 2.5-4.0 t/h. Suitable drying conditions are recommended as follows : drying capacity 3.8 t/h, bed velocity 2.8 m/s, average drying air temperature 144 °C, bed height 13.5 cm, fraction of air recycled 0.8. Residence time of paddy was approximately 1.3 minutes. Test results showed that moisture content of paddy was reduced from 32.6 % dry-basis to 25.8 % dry-basis. Consumption of electrical power and diesel fuel was 12.9 kW and 21.71 1/h respectively. Primary energy consumption was 910.9 MJ/h. The dryer could evaporate water 218.8 kg/h. Specific primary energy consumption was 4.2 MJ/kg-water evaporated. Cost of paddy drying was 1.48 baht/kg-water evaporated of which 0.53 was fixed cost and 0.95 was energy cost (US$1 =34baht).  相似文献

Thin-layer drying characteristics of rough rice were determined at temperature ranging from 11.8 to 51 °C and for relative humidities ranging from 37.1% to 91.3%, with initial moisture contents in the range of 24.7 to 41.6% dry basis. An oven, a self contain air conditioning unit, recently developed in Japan, was used for this experiments. With this apparatus, very smooth drying curves were obtained. The data of sample weight, and dry and wet bulb temperatures of the drying air were recorded continuously throughout the drying period for each test. The drying process was terminated when the moisture content change in 24 h was less than 0.2 % d.b. (weight change was less than 0.05 g). The final points were recorded as the dynamic equilibrium moisture contents.

The drying data were than fitted to the Page model. The model gave a very good fit for the moisture content with an average standard error of 0.294 % d.b¨ Both the drying parameters, K and N, are function of drying air temperature and relative humidity. The effect of variable initial moisture content was also described effectively by the empirical Page model. The drying time employed had a large effect on the K and N values. The results presented here, over typically 5 day drying, will be useful in the long term moisture transfer process occurring during ventilated storage.  相似文献

Urease activity, cracking, and breakage are important factors in considering the quality of raw soybean for feed meal industries. A two-dimensional spouted bed dryer was investigated to determine its capability for thermally inactivating the urease enzyme and maintaining its other qualities. The experimental results have shown that the drying kinetics of soybean in a two-dimensional spouted bed dryer are of the form described in the thin layer drying. The expression for the model parameter in Newton's law of cooling equation accounting for the moisture contents and inlet air temperatures was developed. The initial moisture content and inlet air temperature conditions cause cracks in the kernels. The strong collision between kernels and deflector because of high superficial velocity leads to high percentage of broken soybeans in the spout region. However, the velocity of 15.9 m/s can reduce the breakage below 5%. The inactivation of urease at low-to-moderate moisture content is suitably described by the first order kinetics. The modified Monod equation is applied when the moisture content is higher than 26% dry basis due to the inhibitory effect of water content on the inactivation rate. To complete urease inactivation and maintain protein quality, the temperatures of 150°C should be used.  相似文献

Drying curves were determined in a mechanically agitated fluidized bed dryer, at temperatures between 70°C and 160°C, air velocities between 1.1 m/s and 2.2 m/s and stirring rates between 30 rpm and 70 rpm for batch drying of 3 kg lots of carrot slices, measuring the moisture content and shrinking of the particles in time. This was complemented by a study of the rate and degree of swelling of dried carrot particles in water between 20 and 75°C. Drying kinetics were modeled by Fick's second law, for which an optimal agreement with the experimental data was obtained when the effective diffusivity (De) was determined by a correlation based on the air velocity (v), the air temperature (T) and the dimensional moisture content of the carrot particles (X/Xo). Loss of carotenes is minimized when dehydration is carried out at about 130°C with a drying time below 12 min.  相似文献

The concept of the product moisture locus was tested in this work using a pilot-scale modified Niro spray dryer (diameter 0.8 m, height 2 m), where the residence time of the particles inside this spray dryer is lower compared with larger industrial spray dryers. The moisture contents of skim milk powder produced from spray drying skim milk (solids content 8.8% w/v) at different operating conditions, namely different swirl vane angles (0°, 25°, 30°), inlet air temperatures (170°C, 200°C, 230°C) and process fluid flowrates (1.4 kg h-1, 1.6 kg h-1, 1.8 kg h-1), were compared with the predicted equilibrium moisture contents. In addition, the residence time of the particles was also increased in the spray dryer by decreasing the inlet air mass flowrate from 0.016 to 0.013 kg s-1. The outlet moisture contents of the skim milk powder for all the 23 runs carried out in this work were within 0.4% of the equilibrium values. Thus, the skim milk powder particles were in close equilibrium with the gas inside the drying chamber. These equilibrium limitations are confirmed by other literature data (Boonyai, P. Pneumatic conveying drying (PCD) is a combination of heat and mass transfer and pneumatic handling technology. This technology has been extensively used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries, as well as many others. The PCD technique is beneficial for agricultural products, because it can achieve high-quality drying with reduced heat damage in a very short time. In this study, one-dimensional and three-dimensional mathematical models for the drying of sawdust particles in a pneumatic dryer were developed and verified with experiments. The three-dimensional modeling was done with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package (ANSYS FLUENT, Ver. 13.0, Ansys, Inc.), in which the gas phase is modeled as a continuum using the Euler approach, and the droplet/particle phase is modeled by a discrete phase model with a Lagrange approach. One-dimensional analysis was performed in MATLAB (Ver. 7.0). The experiments were carried out to validate the model in a pneumatic dryer with a horizontal length of 1 m, vertical height of 1.1 m, and diameter of 0.14 m. Sawdust, a raw material used for producing pellets, was prepared from well-seasoned pinewood timber. The initial moisture content of the sawdust was 22% (wb). The hot air inlet temperature in the dryer was fixed at 100°C. The variations in air pressure, air velocity, air temperature, and particle moisture content were investigated along the length of the dryer. The final moisture contents of sawdust and air temperature were reduced by 2% (wb) and 5°C, respectively. The simulated values were in good agreement with the experimental values. The developed model was then employed for the design of a pilot-scale pneumatic dryer (length 7 m and diameter 0.14 m). The final moisture content of the sawdust particles was reduced to 14% (wb) when the dryer length was increased from 1 to 7 m. In addition, the modeling was performed using buffers in the pilot-scale dryers. The use of a buffer noticeably increased the drying efficiency.  相似文献

Rough rice at about 21% (wet basis) was dried at various conditions of temperatures and evaporating capacities of air. The influence of both parameters on drying rate has been studied. At high temperatures, high drying rates can be achieved with low evaporating capacities. In addition, desorption isotherms of rough rice were measured at 35, 60 and 85°C and the experimental isotherms data were fitted using a modified Pfost equation.

A compartmental model was developed to simulate the grain moisture content. Heat and mass transfer coefficients were optimized using a Nelder & Mead method. Internal mass transfer coefficient was written as an exponential function of the average moisture content and temperature of the grain and the external mass transfer coefficient as a function of air temperature. The compartmental approach predicts very well the average moisture content with a mean error of about 5% in static and dynamic conditions.  相似文献

The accuracy of moisture content values determined for organic soil using the oven drying method is dependent on the oven drying temperature. Some charring of the organic fraction occurs at the standard oven drying temperature of 110 ± 5°C; pore water remains in the soil when temperatures below 100°C are used. A new technique to determine the specific oven drying temperature that yields the correct value of the moisture content for organic soils is presented. Routine moisture content tests should be conducted at the standard oven drying temperature; moisture content values determined on the basis of the recommended oven drying temperature of 60°C include a larger error. A moisture content parameter is introduced to facilitate direct comparison of moisture content values calculated on the basis of different oven drying temperatures.  相似文献
