When does it benefit a firm to take a lead in innovation with information technology (IT)? How should a firm align its IT innovation with a dynamic industry? In addressing these questions we present a typology of IT Innovation and Environment Alignment (ITIEA) based on a firm's IT innovation strategic orientation and the industry environment. The traditional ‘fit’ perspective predicts that a firm that matches its IT innovation with a dynamic environment would obtain performance benefits. In contrast, the ‘options’ perspective suggests that a firm that takes advantage of a stable environment to proactively pursue IT innovation and develop IT capability as real options would obtain performance advantage. We employ a quasi-experiment design to test these two competing hypotheses using archival data of IT leaders over a time frame of 6 years. We perform a longitudinal analysis of the performance change trajectories of proactive and reactive IT leaders over time. The results indicate a general support for the ‘options’ perspective that proactive IT leaders that lead in innovation with IT in relatively stable environments are found to consistently outperform reactive IT leaders in overall performance, allocative efficiency, and cost efficiency in management process. However, interestingly, the results also show a partial support for the ‘fit’ perspective that reactive IT leaders that emphasize intensive deployment of IT innovation in dynamic environments are found to obtain a cost advantage in production and operation process over time. The findings offer practical implications for managers to better engage in IT innovations to create and sustain competitive advantage. Synthesizing options thinking and dynamic capability perspective, we provide a framework to better understand IT innovation, dynamic environment, and performance outcomes. The findings also shed useful light on whether, when, and how to innovate with IT for sustained competitive advantage.

With the wide diffusion of information technology (IT) in our daily life and work, it is clear that product innovation and service innovation have more and more connection with IT, and IT has become an important tool or component in innovation. The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into future studies pertaining to this area by investigating the research development of IT innovation using bibliometric analysis. The status of IT innovation study is analysed through citation analysis with the help of CiteSpace. Influential references, hot topics, top-tier journals and important institutes are all detected, and the intellectual structure of recent studies is also mapped in this study, and we find that research on IT innovation is mainly from two directions, innovation study group and information systems study group. Finally, we follow the logic of Nambisan [2013. “Information Technology and Product/Service Innovation: A Brief Assessment and Some Suggestions for Future Research.” Journal of the Association for Information Systems 14 (4): 215–226] to explore the relationship between IT and innovation through reviewing papers in the top journals in this field. We find that most studies treat IT as an enabler of innovation. Although some recent studies try to pay attention to the role of IT as a trigger for innovation and give some rationale for the IT–innovation relationship, further studies are still required to uncover the trigger effect mechanism.

Based on 45 interviews and significant documentation, we explore the offshore outsourcing experiences of a US-based biotechnology
company. This company offshore outsourced 21 IT projects to six suppliers in India. Senior managers and the official documents
from the Program Management Office consistently reported that offshore outsourcing was successful in reducing the company’s
IT costs. But interviews with knowledgeable participants actually managing the projects suggest that many projects were not
successful in meeting cost, quality, and productivity objectives. We found evidence that this company’s offshore strategy
to simply replace domestic contractors with cheaper, offshore suppliers was a poor fit with its social and cultural contexts.
Specifically, we found that strong social networks between the company’s internal IT employees and domestic contractors were
not easily replicated with offshore suppliers. Furthermore, the internal project management processes were often incompatible
with offshore suppliers’ processes. This paper also analyzes seven project characteristics that differentiate highly-rated
projects from poorly-rated projects. These project characteristics are type of IT work, size of supplier firm, location of
supplier employees (onsite/offshore), dollar value of the contract, duration of the project, timing of the project, and client
unit managing the project. The paper concludes with four overall insights for clients and suppliers.
