The hypocholesterolemic effect of isolated soybean proteins and fenofibrate in rats was compared. Forty-five rats were divided into five groups: standard (STD; casein), high cholesterol (HC; STD plus 1% cholesterol/0.5% cholic acid), HC + β-conglycinin, HC + glycinin and HC + fenofibrate. The proteins and the drug were administered by gavage for 28 days. The proteins decreased total cholesterol (TC) and triacylglycerol (TG) in the plasma of the rats fed HC diet, to values very close to those fed on fenofibrate. High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in the plasma were increased by the β-conglycinin, glycinin and fenofibrate groups. The largest TC reduction in the liver was observed in the fenofibrate group; in contrast, the β-conglycinin and glycinin groups exhibited reduced the levels of hepatic TG and TC. Based on these data, it could be suggested that the oral daily administration of isolated soybean proteins, in the range of 2.75% of the protein ingested daily, can promote a reduction in TC and TG in the plasma of rats fed hypercholesterolemic diets.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of an anthocyanin pigmented rice (e.g. black rice) to mitigate the onset of hypercholesterolemia in rats-fed atherogenic diets. Male Wistar (n = 10/group) rats were fed with atherogenic diets containing 0.5% cholesterol in the presence and in the absence of bile salt (e.g. 0.05% cholic acid) along with a standardized black rice extract (BRE) (e.g. 3%, w/w). All animals were individually housed in stainless steel cages and fed with the experimental diets during a 12-h period for 10 weeks. Body weights of rats were measured every week of the experiment. After 10 weeks fed on experimental diets, rats were sacrificed and plasma total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol and triacylglycerols were measured immediately. The total cholesterol (TC) content in the liver, heart and aorta, and the concentration of triacylglycerol (TAG) were measured after lipid extraction using Folch method. Rats fed with 0.5% cholesterol containing diets which also included bile salt exhibited a considerably more severe hypercholesterolemia than counterparts fed diets containing only 0.5% cholesterol. The inclusion of the BRE in diets significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the level of TC, LDL–TC and TAG in plasma of rats-fed control diets that either contained or were absent in bile salt (p < 0.05). There were no differences in HDL-level. Liver crude lipids and total cholesterol levels were also significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in experimental groups relative to the control group in both experiments. Thus, supplementation of atherogenic experimental diets with BRE effectively decreased lipid levels in hypercholesterolemic rats. In lieu of the mixture of bioactive components present in BRE, it is possible that more than one mechanism underlying this reduction in lipids is involved.  相似文献

The effect of porcine artery elastin on serum cholesterol level was investigated in rats fed a cholesterol-free diet. Rats were fed for 4 weeks, with a diet (ED) containing 15% casein and 5% of porcine artery elastin in comparison with a diet (CD) containing 20% casein. The total serum and non-HDL-cholesterol concentrations were lower (P < 0.001) in ED-fed group than the CD-fed group at the end of the experiment. Caecal propionate concentration and Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus population were higher (P < 0.05) in ED-fed group than the CD-fed group. The results of this study suggest that porcine artery elastin could be considered as a functional dietary protein with hypocholesterolaemic ability. Favourable amino acid composition and lysine derived cross links may at least be partially responsible for the hypocholesterolaemic ability of ED. Moreover, the higher caecal propionic acid concentration in the ED-fed group may have suppressed the cholesterol synthesis in the liver, and reduced the serum cholesterol level.  相似文献

Information on the combined effect of dietary vitamin C and Se on the composition and oxidative stability of meat of broilers is not available in the literature. In the present experiment, male broiler chickens were fed a maize–wheat–soya diet supplemented with vitamin C at 280 and 560 mg/kg of diet, and Se (sodium selenite or selenised yeast; Se) at 0.3 mg/kg for 5 weeks. After slaughter, samples of thigh meat were analysed. The supplementation of diets with vitamin C or Se increased the protein concentration of the meat at the expense of fat. Vitamin C supplementation increased the vitamin C content of the meat in a dose-dependent manner and decreased the vitamin A concentration in the meat of broilers fed diets with sodium selenite or without a Se supplement. In the meat of the broilers that were fed these diets, the vitamin C decreased the lipid oxidation in meat that was stored for 5 days. No sparing effect of vitamin C was apparent on the amount of vitamin E in the meat. Selenised yeast was more effective in the enrichment of meat with Se than was selenite. Both Se sources increased the activity of glutathione peroxidase and the oxidative stability of the meat.  相似文献

Diabetes mellitus is a common problem in developed countries. An improved postprandial hyperglycemic peak is one of the main therapeutic targets in diabetic patients. The Wistar rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were divided into cornstarch (control) and Japonica rice groups, which were fed 640 g starch/kg diets for 4 weeks. The area (means ± SD) under the glucose curve of cornstarch was 173.8 ± 6.9 and Japonica rice diet was 154.3 ± 8.7 mmol × min/L, and the area (means ± SD) under the insulin curve of cornstarch was 12.9 ± 0.1 and Japonica rice diet was 12.0 ± 0.6 nmol × min/L. The glycosylated hemoglobin levels, serum fructosamine and cholesterol concentrations in diabetic rats fed the Japonica rice diet were significantly lower than the control group (P < 0.05). The decreased malondialdehyde levels and increased superoxide dismutase activity and total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter in plasma were also found in rat fed the Japonica rice diet compared to the control. These results suggested that the diet containing high-resistance-starch Japonica rice might reduce glycosylated hemoglobin levels, serum cholesterol concentrations and raised the antioxidant status in the blood.  相似文献

Total lipids of olive pomace (OP), olive pomace diet (OP diet), fish oil diet (FO diet) and fish filets of farmed gilthead sea bream (fish fed with FO diet and OP diet respectively) were extracted and separated into polar (TPL) and neutral (TNL) lipids. All samples were assessed for their in vitro activity against washed rabbit platelets aggregation induced by platelet activating factor (PAF) and they were further analyzed by electrospray-mass spectrometry. The high levels of palmitic (16:0), oleic (18:1 cis ω  9), linoleic (18:2 ω  6) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA 22:5 ω  3) contained in both OP and FO diets are reflected to the gilthead sea breams fed with the individual diet respectively, while the gilthead sea bream fed with FO diet displays a decrease in DPA. All samples contained various glycerophospholipids species. Two PE species were identified in OP, OP diet and fish fed with OP diet and not in FO diet, while that might be an indication that these substances are likely to be the key polar phospholipids that have the ability to be in vitro PAF inhibitors, i.e. inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in blood arteries.  相似文献

The anti-obesity effects of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), orange peel extract (OPE), black tea extract (BTE), and caffeine (CF) in female CF-1 mice were studied. Female CF-1 mice were fed high-fat diets containing 0.1% EGCG, 0.2% OPE, 0.2% BTE and 0.05% caffeine alone and in combination for 10 weeks. The body weight gain and weights of abdominal fat and brown adipose tissue were significantly reduced in mice whose diets contained OPE, BTE, caffeine, OPE + BTE and OPE + CF. Notably, mice fed a high-fat diet supplemented daily with 0.2% OPE + 0.2% BTE + 0.05% CF prevented body weight gain by 48.8%, parametrial fat pad weight by 88.2%, retroperitoneal fat pad weight by 82.8% and brown adipose tissue by 63.7% compared with mice fed a high-fat diet. On the basis of these findings, it was concluded that oral feeding of orange peel extract, black tea extract and caffeine had anti-obesity effects by suppressing body weight gain and adipose tissue formation.  相似文献

The objective was to determine the influence of vitamin C (VC) supplemented for approximately 102 d during the finishing period on color, tenderness, and fatty acid profile of longissimus thoracis (LT; n = 136) from steers fed a 0.55% sulfur diet. Treatments included 4 supplemental VC concentrations: 1) 0 (CON), 2) 5 (5VC), 3) 10 (10VC), or 4) 20 (20VC) g VC·h 1 d 1 in a common diet. Increasing supplemental VC decreased (P < 0.01) L*, but increased (P < 0.01) vitamin E and tended to increase (P  0.07) calcium and iron content of steaks. No VC (P  0.25) effect was noted for WBSF, calpain-1 autolysis, troponin T degradation, or most fatty acid profiles. A quadratic effect (P  0.03) was observed for cholesterol and CLA content of LT. Under the conditions of our study, supplementing VC to steers fed a 0.55% sulfur diet late in the finishing period did not influence color or tenderness, but increased the vitamin E content.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of supplementing the diet of Comisana sheep with by-products from industrial tomato manufacture on the fat composition and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content of milk fat, two groups of 50 ewes each were fed either total mixed ration standard (TMRS) or total mixed ration with added tomato by-products (TMRA). Milk fat composition was determined by high-resolution gas chromatography (HRGC). The milk fat content for the animals fed the TMRA diet increased by 6.41% (P < 0.01) after six weeks, compared with the animals fed the TMRS diet. The CLA content in the milk fat for the group of animals fed the TMRA diet was 19.8% (P < 0.05) higher than for those fed the TMRS diet, and reached 1.33 g 100 g?1 fat, while the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content increased by a 6.43% (P < 0.05) and reached 7.12 g 100 g?1 fat. The fatty acid composition showed an increase in the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The n ? 3:n ? 6 ratio increased by 13% in the milk from sheep fed with the TMRA diet. These observations were confirmed by triglyceride analysis, which showed a decrease in the amount of short-chain (C28–C32) and medium-chain (C34–C42) triglycerides after six weeks, while the opposite was observed for the long-chain triglycerides (C44–C54).  相似文献

The hypocholesterolemic effect of thymoquinone rich fraction (TQRF) extracted from Nigella sativa seeds using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) in comparison with commercial available thymoquinone (TQ) in male Sprague–Dawley rats was investigated. Rats were fed prepared diet supplemented with 1% (w/w) cholesterol and treated with TQRF at, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g/kg and TQ at 20, 50 and 100 mg/kg for 8 weeks. Plasma total cholesterol levels (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) were significantly decreased in the TQRF and TQ treated rats compared to untreated rats. mRNA level of low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) was significantly expressed and the mRNA level of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-COAR) was significantly suppressed in the TQRF and TQ treated rats at different doses compared to untreated rats. These new findings identify TQRF and TQ as natural cholesterol lowering agents, and our study provides a molecular basis for the mechanisms of action through regulation of cholesterol in two main mechanisms first, uptake of LDLC via up regulation of LDLR gene and second, inhibition the synthesis of cholesterol via suppressing the HMG-COAR gene.  相似文献

Improving pork quality and shelf life is important in today’s swine industry because higher levels of DDGS are incorporated into pig diets. Relatively high level of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in DDGS may increase pork susceptibility to lipid oxidation and thus reduce pork shelf life. Antioxidants such as vitamin E may delay the onset of pork lipid oxidation when used as an ingredient in the diet. This experiment examined carcass characteristics, meat quality, shelf life, and color stability in pork from pigs (n = 150) fed five levels of a natural vitamin E (Nova-E) and one level of synthetic vitamin E. Natural vitamin E and synthetic vitamin E had no effect on carcass characteristics or meat quality. Increasing dietary natural vitamin E from 10 to 200 mg/kg decreased lipid oxidation. Lipid oxidation of pork chops and ground pork was similar between pigs fed 40 mg/kg and higher levels of natural vitamin E, indicating no additional benefits from supplementing beyond 40 mg/kg natural vitamin E. Supplementing 200 mg/kg synthetic vitamin E decreased pork lipid oxidation when compared to supplementing 10 mg/kg natural vitamin E. High levels of natural vitamin E or synthetic vitamin E, however, did not prevent discoloration of loin chops. These data indicate that natural vitamin E was effective to help reduce lipid oxidation and the effective minimal level of dietary supplementation appeared to be 40 mg/kg.  相似文献

Grain sorghum is a rich source of phytochemicals. In this study, male hamsters were fed AIN-93M diets supplemented with a hexane-extractable lipid fraction from sorghum distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). Diets contained 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 5.0% (w/w) DDGS lipid extract. After 4 wk, the 5.0% DDGS lipids group had significantly lower plasma non-HDL cholesterol and liver esterified cholesterol concentration. Faecal neutral sterol (i.e., cholesterol) excretion was significantly higher in the 5.0% DDGS lipids group compared to the other treatments (66% higher compared to controls). Bile acid excretion was not affected by DDGS lipid intake. Faecal cholesterol excretion was negatively correlated with liver cholesterol concentration (r = ?0.97, P = 0.026), and liver cholesterol concentration was directly correlated with plasma total cholesterol concentration (r = 0.96, P = 0.041). Thus, lipid extract of sorghum DDGS exhibited cholesterol-lowering properties due, at least in part, to increased cholesterol excretion from the body and could provide health benefits when incorporated into human diets.  相似文献

This study was designed to test the hypolipidemic properties and antioxidative activities of sardinelle (Sardinella aurita) protein hydrolysates (SPHs) obtained by treatment with crude enzyme preparations from Bacillus pumilus A1(SPHA1), Bacillus mojavensis A21(SPHA21) and crude enzyme extract from sardinelle viscera (SPHEE).Wistar rats were fed during 7 weeks a standard laboratory diet, a cholesterol-enriched diet (1%) or a cholesterol SPH-enriched diet. The hypercholesterolemic diet induced the elevation of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Supplementing cholesterol-enriched diet with SPHs or whole sardinelle protein (WSP) at a concentration of 5% (w/w) increased the serum level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and HDL-C/TC ratio and decreased the serum levels of TC, TG, LDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio significantly. The thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) level, as an indicator of lipid peroxidation, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) were examined. The hepatic antioxidant enzymes activities were significantly decreased and the malondialdehyde (MDA) level was increased in rats fed a cholesterol-enriched diet compared to those fed a standard diet. The treatment of hypercholesterolemic (HCD) diet rats with SPHs reduced the MDA concentration and increased the antioxidant enzyme activities. These results suggested that the hypolipidemic effect of SPHs might be due to their abilities to lower serum TC, TG, and LDL-C levels as well as to their antioxidant activities preventing the lipid peroxidation process.  相似文献

Theaflavins are major polyphenols in black tea. This study investigated antiobesity and lipid lowering effects of black tea extract (BTE), a highly purified theaflavins mixture (TFs, 83.84%) and theaflavin (TF1, 93.25%) on high-fat diet (HFD) induced obese rats. The body weight was slightly reduced by BTE and TFs (p > 0.05), and was significantly decreased by TF1 (p < 0.05) relative to the HFD control group. All samples remarkably decreased the food intake, adiposity index and the serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (p < 0.05), except that BTE and TF1 insignificantly decreased the TC concentration (p > 0.05). Moreover, administration of BTE, TFs and TF1 all significantly decreased atherogenic index (AI), enhanced insulin sensitive index (ISI), inhibited the hepatic lipase (HL) activity (p < 0.05), and slightly reduced leptin level in liver, decreased serum alanine transaminase (ALT) activity and increased serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (p > 0.05) as compared to that of the HFD controls. These results indicated that theaflavins were one of the functional components which contributed to the antiobesity and lipid lowering effects of black tea, and might reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in obese patients.  相似文献

Holsteins (n = 12) and Jerseys (n = 12) averaging 90 d postpartum were fed 70 d in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of breeds and diets containing 3.0 or 6.8% ether extract with or without 36.7 mg/kg lasalocid in the diet DM. For many variables, the breeds responded differently. Holsteins usually performed better on high fat diets without lasalocid and Jerseys responded better to lasalocid. Influence of increased dietary fat generally was small except when fat acted synergistically with lasalocid. Dry matter intake was depressed substantially only when lasalocid was added to the higher fat diet. This detrimental effect precipitated a reduction in milk production. Dietary lasalocid reduced 4% FCM yield, milk fat percent, and milk fat yield without any lasalocid × fat interactions on these variables; however these reductions were much larger with Holsteins than Jerseys. Feeding lasalocid decreased ruminal acetate and increased ruminal propionate, but the changes were smaller with Jerseys. Higher fat diets increased serum cholesterol, but increases were less with Jerseys than with Holsteins. After 56 d of feeding, increased dietary fat and lasalocid had little influence on digestibility of feed nutrients. Adaptation to lasalocid feeding appeared to be gradual and prolonged, extending beyond 35 d. Results suggest no economically important beneficial synergistic effects from feeding added fat plus lasalocid to lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

The effects of Nigella sativa (NS) on lipid profile, C-reactive protein, oxidized LDL, antioxidant capacity, Apo A and Apo B and fatty streak formation in hypercholesterolemic male rabbits were examined. Fifteen rabbits were distributed into three groups of five each [normal diet, hypercholesterolemic diet (1% cholesterol) and hypercholesterolemic diet (1% cholesterol) supplemented with 5% NS]. They received rabbit laboratory chow diet for a period of 8 weeks. At the start and end of the study, fasting blood was taken from all animals. NS significantly decreased fatty streak formation as well as total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in hypercholesterolemic male rabbits. NS showed positive effects on other factors (triacylglycerol, high-density lipoprotein, C-reactive protein, oxidized LDL, antioxidant capacity, Apo A and Apo B), but these were insignificant. Based on favorable efficiency of NS on TC and LDL reduction and its anti-atherogenic cardioprotective properties, it is suggested using this plant with fat-rich diets simultaneously may reduce their adverse health effects.  相似文献

The study was aimed to evaluate the physicochemical effects of three cooking methods i.e. sous-vide (SV), cook-vide (CV) and traditional cooking (TC) on carrots and green peas. SV and CV were performed at 60–90 °C for various time periods (SV: green peas 50–100 min, carrots 90–150 min; CV: green peas 30–70 min, carrots 20–60 min) with respect to peroxidase test. These vegetables were also cooked at atmospheric pressure for 15, 30, 45 and 60 min and the results were compared with those obtained from SV and CV. Antioxidant activity, total phenolic and vitamin C analyses reflected less harm to the green peas in CV as compared to SV and TC. However, carrots were approximately half degraded during SV than in CV and TC as shown by the antioxidant activity. Moreover, total phenolic content of carrots was highly protected when cooked in SV method. The color change values (∆ E) of green peas were slightly lower in TC when compared to CV and SV, while in carrots, they were very close to each other's in all three methods. CV-cooked green peas and carrots provided the highest general acceptance for the sensorial properties. As a conclusion, TC had more adverse effects on the quality characteristics on green peas and carrots.  相似文献

The rate and extent of in situ digesta transit after ingestion of diets containing dietary fibres differing in their susceptibility to large intestine fermentation were investigated. One hundred and twenty rats were fed diets containing 7.5% cellulose, inulin, potato fibre or maize starch for 3 days, then the same diets with titanium dioxide (TiO2) for 3 days, followed by diets without TiO2 for 2 days. In all diets, TiO2 ratios rapidly increased within 24 h and reached a maximum level in duodenum, caecum and colon within 2–3 days. Inulin, potato fibre and maize starch-fed rats showed higher levels of caecal short-chain fatty acids, lower faecal polysaccharide concentrations, and reduced faecal output than the rats fed cellulose. Inulin was highly susceptible to caecal microbial fermentation compared to the other dietary fibres. Transit of these dietary fibres through the GI tract was rapid, and the rate of digesta transit was not affected by dietary fibre fermentability in the large intestine.  相似文献

Brown algae contain soluble polysaccharides, such as alginic acid, fucoidan and laminaran. To assess the induction of dietary fiber-fermenting bacteria in the intestine, rats were fed diet containing no dietary fiber (control) or 2% w/w of the polysaccharides for 2 weeks. The levels of dietary fiber-fermenting bacteria in caecal contents were determined using decimal dilution culture containing 1% w/v of the fibers. Caecal microbiota in the rats was analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). In the culture method, 4–9 log viable cells/g caecal content of alginate-fermenting bacteria was detected in rats fed alginate, while this was not detected in rats fed the control diet. Although laminaran-fermenting bacteria were detected in control rats (4–9 log viable cells/g), the level observed in rats fed laminaran was 8 or 9 log viable cells/g. On the other hand, fucoidan-fermenting bacteria were not detected in rats fed fucoidan. DGGE analysis showed laminaran administration increased the diversity of bacterial bands. Clostridium spp. and Parabacteroides distasonis were detected as typical species in rats fed alginate and laminaran. The results indicate that the intake of soluble fermentable fibers in edible brown algae can alter the intestinal microbiota and its fermentation capacity.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate a polyphenols-rich fruit-based functional beverage on blood pressure, serum and liver lipid profiles in vivo. Sixty spontaneously hypertensive rats were divided into five groups and were fed with a AIN-93G-diet as the normal control (NC), high cholesterol diet as atherogenic control (AC), and the AC diet with three different beverage dosages (0.5X, 1X, 2X), where X is the equivalence of two portion sizes for an adult (X = 10 mL/kg BW/day) after dose translation. Blood pressure was measured during weeks 2 and 4 using a tail-cuff method. Systolic blood pressures were lowered by the beverage at the supplementation of 1X/2X after 2 week but not after 4 week. The oral administration of the beverage at 1X/2X significantly lowered liver cholesterol and total and non-HDL-cholesterol levels in the serum. Thus, the newly formulated beverage possessed hypolipidaemic effects while showing inconsistent effect in lowering the blood pressure.  相似文献
