Soft constraints based on semirings are a generalization of classical constraints, where tuples of variables' values in each soft constraint are associated to elements from an algebraic structure called semiring. This framework is able to express, for example, fuzzy, classical, weighted, valued and over-constrained constraint problems.Classical constraint propagation has been extended and adapted to soft constraints by defining a schema for soft constraint propagation [8]. On the other hand, in [1–3] it has been proven that most of the well known constraint propagation algorithms for classical constraints can be cast within a single schema. In this paper we combine these two schemas and we provide a more general framework where the schema of [3] can be used for soft constraints. In doing so, we generalize the concept of soft constraint propagation, and we provide new sufficient and independent conditions for its termination.  相似文献

Conceptual modelling as applied to database development can be described as a two stage process: schema modelling followed by schema integration. Schema modelling is the process of transforming individual user requirements into a conceptual schema: an implementation-independent map of data requirements. Schema integration is the process of combining individual conceptual schemas into a single, unified schema. Single-user tools for schema modelling have enjoyed much success partly because the process of schema modelling has become relatively well formalised. Although a number of formal approaches to conducting schema integration have been proposed, it appears that schema integration tools have not enjoyed the same level of success. This we attribute not so much to the problem of formalisation but to the inherent collaborative nature of schema integration work. This paper first discusses the importance of collaboration to schema integration work. It then describes SISIBIS, a demonstrator system employing the IBIS (Issue Based Information System) scheme to support collaborative database design.  相似文献

ContextIt is critical to ensure the quality of a software system in the initial stages of development, and several approaches have been proposed to ensure that a conceptual schema correctly describes the user’s requirements.ObjectiveThe main goal of this paper is to perform automated reasoning on UML schemas containing arbitrary constraints, derived roles, derived attributes and queries, all of which must be specified by OCL expressions.MethodThe UML/OCL schema is encoded in a first order logic formalisation, and an existing reasoning procedure is used to check whether the schema satisfies a set of desirable properties. Due to the undecidability of reasoning in highly expressive schemas, such as those considered here, we also provide a set of conditions that, if satisfied by the schema, ensure that all properties can be checked in a finite period of time.ResultsThis paper extends our previous work on reasoning on UML conceptual schemas with OCL constraints by considering derived attributes and roles that can participate in the definition of other constraints, queries and derivation rules. Queries formalised in OCL can also be validated to check their satisfiability and to detect possible equivalences between them. We also provide a set of conditions that ensure finite reasoning when they are satisfied by the schema under consideration.ConclusionThis approach improves upon previous work by allowing automated reasoning for more expressive UML/OCL conceptual schemas than those considered so far.  相似文献

Medical diagnosis can be considered a planning task: actions are decided on, then executed. However, unlike traditional planning tasks, new information can arise any time, changing the situation and invalidating the plan. In order to cope with this, the reasoner must be able to interleave planning with plan execution. Our approach to this problem is called schema-based reasoning. In this approach, the reasoner's procedural knowledge is represented as schemas, small packets of procedural knowledge which can be used to achieve a goal. When a new goal arises, the reasoner uses the goal and the features of the current consultation to retrieve an appropriate schema from memory; the schema is then applied to achieve the goal. If several schemas are active, the reasoner chooses between them using information about the current situation and information from strategic schemas. Our approach is implemented in MEDIC, a schema-based diagnostic reasoner whose domain is pulmonology.  相似文献

Integration of geographic information has increased in importance because of new possibilities arising from the interconnected world and the increasing availability of geographic information. Ontologies support the creation of conceptual models and help with information integration. In this paper, we propose a way to link the formal representation of semantics (i.e., ontologies) to conceptual schemas describing information stored in databases. The main result is a formal framework that explains a mapping between a spatial ontology and a geographic conceptual schema. The mapping of ontologies to conceptual schemas is made using three different levels of abstraction: formal, domain, and application levels. At the formal level, highly abstract concepts are used to express the schema and the ontologies. At the domain level, the schema is regarded as an instance of a generic data model. At the application level, we focus on the particular case of geographic applications. We also discuss the influence of ontologies in both the traditional and geographic systems development methodologies, with an emphasis on the conceptual design phase.  相似文献

A formal model is presented for a conceptual schema of persistent object models that support a strong notion of object identity. The object constructors in the model are sets, tuples, and disjunct. The databases that correspond to such schemata are graph-structured object spaces. These conceptual object spaces are mapped onto physical object spaces, which are typically forests of trees. The characteristics of the physical schemata are discussed and an algorithm to transform a conceptual schema into a physical schema is given.  相似文献

Many XML-relational systems, i.e., the systems that use an XML schema as an external schema and a relational schema as an internal schema of the data application representation level, require modifications of the data schemas in the course of time. Schema evolution is one of the ways to support schema modifications for the application at the DBMS level. A number of schema evolution support systems for different data models have been suggested. Schema evolution can be applied to mapping-related evolving schemas (such as schemas of XML-relational systems), the transformation problem for which is also known as schema adaptation. In this paper, a survey of various approaches to solving the outlined problems is given.  相似文献

Establishing interschema semantic knowledge between corresponding elements in a cooperating OWL-based multi-information server grid environment requires deep knowledge, not only about the structure of the data represented in each server, but also about the commonly occurring differences in the intended semantics of this data. The same information could be represented in various incompatible structures, and more importantly the same structure could be used to represent data with many diverse and incompatible semantics. In a grid environment interschema semantic knowledge can only be detected if both the structural and semantic properties of the schemas of the cooperating servers are made explicit and formally represented in a way that a computer system can process. Unfortunately, very often there is lack of such knowledge and the underlying grid information servers (ISs) schemas, being semantically weak as a consequence of the limited expressiveness of traditional data models, do not help the acquisition of this knowledge. The solution to overcome this limitation is primarily to upgrade the semantic level of the IS local schemas through a semantic enrichment process by augmenting the local schemas of grid ISs to semantically enriched schema models, then to use these models in detecting and representing correspondences between classes belonging to different schemas. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using OWL-based domain ontologies both for building semantically rich schema models, and for expressing interschema knowledge and reasoning about it. We believe that the use of OWL/RDF in this setting has two important advantages. On the one hand, it enables a semantic approach for interschema knowledge specification, by concentrating on expressing conceptual and semantic correspondences between both the conceptual (intensional) definition and the set of instances (extension) of classes represented in different schemas. On the other hand, it is exactly this semantic nature of our approach that allows us to devise reasoning mechanisms for discovering and reusing interschema knowledge when the need arises to compare and combine it.  相似文献

Due to the increase of XML-based applications, XML schema design has become an important task. One approach is to consider conceptual schemas as a basis for generating XML documents compliant to consensual information of specific domains. However, the conversion of conceptual schemas to XML schemas is not a straightforward process and inconvenient design decisions can lead to a poor query processing on XML documents generated. This paper presents a conversion approach which considers data and query workload estimated for XML applications, in order to generate an XML schema from a conceptual schema. Load information is used to produce XML schemas which can respond well to the main queries of an XML application. We evaluate our approach through a case study carried out on a native XML database. The experimental results demonstrate that the XML schemas generated by our methodology contribute to a better query performance than related approaches.

We compare EER and OO data models from the point of view of design quality. Quality is measured in terms of (a) correctness of the conceptual schemas being designed, (b) time to complete the design task, and (c) designers' preferences of the models. Result of an experimental comparison of the two models reveal that the EER model surpasses the OO model for designing unary and ternary relationships, it takes less time to design EER schemas, and the EER model is preferred by designers. We conclude that even if the objective is to implement an OO database schema, the recommended procedure is to: (1) create an EER conceptual scheme, (2) map it to an OO schema, and augment the target schema with behavioral constructs that are unique to the OO approach.  相似文献

In this paper, a temporal meta database for three-dimensional (3D) objects whose properties and relationships are supported by valid time is introduced. Based on our proposed temporal object-oriented conceptual schema model, a conceptual schema of the temporal meta database can be generated from a 3D graphical data source and other particular application requirements. Based on our proposed temporal object relational data model with attribute timestamping, logical schemas of the temporal meta database can be systematically and automatically generated from the conceptual schema. From the temporal meta database, non-temporal/temporal metadata about temporal 3D objects are available for temporal information system users. Convenient access using database languages such as SQL can be performed. Queries over 3D objects using a temporal object relational SQL are demonstrated.  相似文献

This research investigates and approach to query processing in a multidatabase system that uses an objectoriented model to capture the semantics of other data models. The object-oriented model is used to construct a global schema, defining an integrated view of the different schemas in the environment. The model is also used as a self-describing model to build a meta-database for storing information about the global schema. A unique aspect of this work is that the object-oriented model is used to describe the different data models of the multidatabase environment, thereby extending the meta database with semantic information about the local schemas. With the global and local schemas all represented in an object-oriented form, structural mappings between the global schema and each local schema are then easily supported. An object algebra then provides a query language for expressing global queries, using the structural mappings to translate object algebra queries into SQL queries over local relational schema. The advantage of using an object algebra is that the object-oriented database can be viewed as a blackboard for temporary storage of local data and for establishing relationships between different databases. The object algebra can be used to directly retrieve temporarily-stored data from the object-oriented database or to transparently retrieve data from local sources using the translation process described in this paper.  相似文献

One of the main steps toward integration or exchange of data is to design the mappings that describe the (often complex) relationships between the source schemas or formats and the desired target schema. In this paper, we introduce a new operator, called MapMerge, that can be used to correlate multiple, independently designed schema mappings of smaller scope into larger schema mappings. This allows a more modular construction of complex mappings from various types of smaller mappings such as schema correspondences produced by a schema matcher or pre-existing mappings that were designed by either a human user or via mapping tools. In particular, the new operator also enables a new “divide-and-merge” paradigm for mapping creation, where the design is divided (on purpose) into smaller components that are easier to create and understand and where MapMerge is used to automatically generate a meaningful overall mapping. We describe our MapMerge algorithm and demonstrate the feasibility of our implementation on several real and synthetic mapping scenarios. In our experiments, we make use of a novel similarity measure between two database instances with different schemas that quantifies the preservation of data associations. We show experimentally that MapMerge improves the quality of the schema mappings, by significantly increasing the similarity between the input source instance and the generated target instance. Finally, we provide a new algorithm that combines MapMerge with schema mapping composition to correlate flows of schema mappings.  相似文献

A global schema is a single, connected view of heterogeneous databases. Past research into the problem of global schema design has demonstrated the use of generalization for connecting disjoint schemas. Before generalization can be applied, the common attributes of the local schemas must be identified. We use the term attribute equivalence for the identification of such common attributes. This paper defines four types of attribute equivalences. The distinction between local and global equivalence is explained, and special attention is given to key attributes. We also discuss the placement of locally equivalent attributes in a global schema.

Test-Driven Development (TDD) is an extreme programming development method in which a software system is developed in short iterations. In this paper we present the Test-Driven Conceptual Modeling (TDCM) method, which is an application of TDD for conceptual modeling, and we show how to develop a conceptual schema using it. In TDCM, a system's conceptual schema is incrementally obtained by performing three kinds of tasks: (1) Write a test the system should pass; (2) Change the schema to pass the test; and (3) Refactor the schema to improve its qualities. We also describe an integration approach of TDCM into a broad set of software development methodologies, including the Unified Process development methodology, the MDD-based approaches, the storytest-driven agile methods and the goal and scenario-oriented requirements engineering methods. We deal with schemas written in UML/OCL, but the TDCM method could be adapted to the development of schemas in other languages.  相似文献

Towards Deeper Understanding of the Search Interfaces of the Deep Web   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Many databases have become Web-accessible through form-based search interfaces (i.e., HTML forms) that allow users to specify complex and precise queries to access the underlying databases. In general, such a Web search interface can be considered as containing an interface schema with multiple attributes and rich semantic/meta-information; however, the schema is not formally defined in HTML. Many Web applications, such as Web database integration and deep Web crawling, require the construction of the schemas. In this paper, we first propose a schema model for representing complex search interfaces, and then present a layout-expression based approach to automatically extract the logical attributes from search interfaces. We also rephrase the identification of different types of semantic information as a classification problem, and design several Bayesian classifiers to help derive semantic information from extracted attributes. A system, WISE-iExtractor, has been implemented to automatically construct the schema from any Web search interfaces. Our experimental results on real search interfaces indicate that this system is highly effective.  相似文献
