The aim of this research it is to show how the biogas biomethanisation from primary and secondary treatment of activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), can be an alternative renewable energy option from fossil fuels, which offers competitive advantages and points out new horizons for the use of this fuel. This will allow to achieve some important priorities of energy plans in EU countries: to reduce the organic matter deposited in landfills and CO2 emissions and to find viable solutions to minimize the environmental impact of sewage sludge (SS).This study analyses the biogas combustion and energy recovery processes from a thermodynamic, thermoeconomic and exergetic point of view. The results show that the boiler of the process is the main source of irreversibility and exergy destruction. Moreover, the energy and exergy economic value of exhaust gases from the combustion chamber, are significant and worthwhile to be exploited. For this reason, the present study explores the applicability and suitability of integrating a Stirling engine in such process. The study reveals that it is possible to create a small micro-cogeneration system which leads to sustainable waste management and energy savings in the treatment plant itself.  相似文献

Grass from urban roadside verges is a potential, though widely unused, resource for bioenergy recovery. Two possible bioenergy recovery techniques were tested, i.e. i) direct anaerobic digestion of the whole parent material and ii) the “integrated generation of solid fuel and biogas from biomass” (IFBB) procedure, which divides biomass into a press fluid and a press cake by mashing and mechanical dewatering. Biomass yield, chemical composition and canopy height of biomass, contribution of functional groups, fermentation characteristics of silage and press fluids, as well as characteristics of the produced solid fuel was investigated, applying a 4-cut management for anaerobic digestion, a 2-cut management for IFBB and an 8 times mulching as a reference. Mean annual biomass yield (2013 and 2014) was 3.24, 3.33 and 5.68 t dry matter ha−1 for the mulching, 4-cut management and 2-cut management, respectively. Yields were higher in 2014 due to more favourable weather conditions. Fibre concentration was higher in material of the 2-cut management than in the 4-cut management, however, methane yield of the corresponding silages was the same. Highest methane yield was gained from press fluids with 292 lN kg−1 volatile solids. The press cake had a lower heating value of 16 MJ kg−1 dry matter and a K2O/CaO index of 0.51–0.88. Gross energy output was 26.4 GJ ha−1 for anaerobic digestion and 84.4 GJ ha−1 for IFBB. Thus, an altered roadside verge management with reduced cutting frequency might allow a significant energy recovery and improved ecosystem services, i.e. increased biodiversity.  相似文献

In the latest years the wind energy sector experienced an exponential growth all over the world. What started as a deployment of onshore projects, soon moved to offshore and, more recently to the urban environment within the context of smart cities and renewable micro-generation. However, urban wind projects using micro turbines do not have enough profit margins to enable the setup of comprehensive and expensive measurement campaigns, a standard procedure for the deployment of large wind parks. To respond to the wind assessment needs of the future smart cities a new and simple methodology for urban wind resource assessment was developed. This methodology is based on the construction of a surface involving a built area in order to estimate the wind potential by treating it as very complex orography. This is a straightforward methodology that allows estimating the sustainable urban wind potential, being suitable to map the urban wind resource in large areas. The methodology was applied to a case study and the results enabled the wind potential assessment of a large urban area being consistent with experimental data obtained in the case study area, with maximum deviations of the order of 10% (mean wind speed) and 20% (power density).  相似文献

A standard ISO Life Cycle Assessment study was carried out to evaluate the environmental sustainability of electricity production from an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant using a mixture of dedicated energy crops, agricultural residues and livestock effluents as input materials. The functional unit was 1 MJ of electricity. System boundaries were from cradle to grave and covered all the phases from energy crops cultivation to the production of biogas and its use in a Combined Heat and Power plant to produce electricity. Liquid and solid digestate storage and spreading on agricultural land were included. Primary data were collected from the AD plant for all the above phases. Since heat produced is used only internally, no allocation was applied in the study. As regards digestate management, CH4 emissions were calculated from literature, whereas four literature methods were applied for calculation of nitrogen emissions with the goal to perform a sensitivity analysis on LCA results. ILCD Handbook impact assessment methodologies were used. Results show that the main hotspots are energy crops cultivation and the management of digestate, mainly because of both nitrogen and methane emissions, affecting Global Warming, Acidification, Marine and Freshwater Eutrophication. Finally, a detailed Monte Carlo analysis, was carried out to evaluate the results uncertainty. The study represents the state of the art about the environmental performance of the AD plant with the use of sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, which both improve the reliability of results, and allows drawing general conclusions on how to mitigate the environmental impacts of AD process.  相似文献

The utilization of different chemical constituents of corn silage during industrial-scale anaerobic digestion was determined. Corn silage together with the resulting solid digestate generated during biogas production were collected from an industrial plant during a regular operating period. Moisture, water and ethanol extractives, ash, total nitrogen, starch, cellulose, the monomeric composition of hemicellulose, acid soluble and acid insoluble lignin were measured in both corn silage and corn silage solid digestate. The relative consumption of each component of corn silage during its anaerobic digestion was estimated with reference to acid insoluble lignin. It was assumed that lignin was not digested throughout the process. Starch and large fractions of extractives and acid soluble lignin were digested. In contrast, the digestion of cellulose and particularly hemicellulose were limited (40% and 29% respectively). Of the hemicellulose monomers, xylose was the least digested (20%). The present work shows that the digestate produced by commercial corn-silage anaerobic digestion contains a notable quantity of cell wall polymers. These could potentially be used in biorefinery processes, e.g. ethanol and xylo-oligosaccharide production.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to advance in understanding of digestion process of energy crops. Cellulose and maize silage were fermented in batch mode at mesophilic (38 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) conditions and corresponding organic loads of 5.5 ± 0.2 kgVS/m3, 11.2 ± 0.3 kgVS/m3 and 16.7 ± 0.4 kgVS/m3.For both substrates more stable and faster digestion took place at 38 °C. Due to complex structure maize degradation was characterized by varying digestion rate and longer total digestion time resulting form breakdown of hard-degradable fractions. The digestion retard at increased OLRs of cellulose and lower degradation level obtained for all cellulose series confirm a higher overloading potential for systems dealing with single-component-substrates but also the enhanced sensitivity of such systems to any inconvenient digestion conditions.Based on observed patterns of volatile fatty acids and oxidation-reduction potential, different fermentation mechanisms can be concluded for cellulose and maize, but also for different temperature modes. Conversion of maize at highly reductive conditions with increased concentrations of butyric acid was accompanied by much higher activity of hydrogenotrophic methanogens than for cellulose digestion. Two factors showed a strong potential to influence test results: an insufficient VS content of inoculum, which caused reduced biogas yields, and a high natural biodiversity of maize silage, resulting in higher biogas yields than calculated based on the maize composition.  相似文献

Using bioslurry from anaerobic digestion as an organic fertilizer has great potential to increase carbon sequestration by supplying organic matter to the soil. This paper examines this potential in Sub-Saharan Africa compared to other uses of organic residues, including burning on pyrolysis cook-stoves and composting. Measurements of loss of carbon on treatment of organic residues indicate that the proportion of carbon lost from organic residue during treatment is greater for anaerobic digestion than for aerobic composting or pyrolysis. The stability of organic residue is increased by treatment, and is similar for composted and anaerobically digested material, but is higher for material treated by pyrolysis. Simulations using the RothC model, driven by parameters based on incubations of the organic residues with soil, suggest that on the basis of decomposability alone, treated organic residues sequester significantly more carbon than untreated organic residues, and despite the differences observed in stability, unless biochar contains a high proportion of inert organic material that does not decompose at all, the potential carbon sequestration by incorporating biochar is similar to that for compost or bioslurry. However, if losses of carbon during treatment are also taken into account, incorporating bioslurry sequesters only approximately the same amount of carbon as if the organic residue had been left untreated. By contrast, incorporating compost and biochar sequesters significantly more carbon than incorporating the untreated organic residue. Therefore using bioslurry as an organic fertilizer sequesters less of the carbon in the soil from organic residue than burning on pyrolysis cook-stoves or composting.  相似文献

In this paper a novel model based on a geographic information system (GIS) is presented for the assessment of sustainable crop residue potentials. The approach is applied to analyse the amount and the spatial distribution (1 km × 1 km grid cells) of cereal straw, root crop and oil plant residues for five European regions, considering spatially differentiated environmental sustainability issues, i.e. organic carbon content in topsoil, soil erodibility, and protected areas. The maximum sustainable residue potential varies strongly between the regions and residue types. In the scenarios Basis and Restrict, it accounts for 45–59% and 24–48% of the theoretical potential respectively without considering competing uses. Among the crop residues, cereal straw shows the highest energy potential in all regions under investigation. In terms of wet mass it accounts for 3.7 Mio. twet/a in North Rhine-Westphalia, 1.6 Mio. twet/a in Île-the-France, 1.2 Mio. twet/a in Wallonia, 0.9 Mio. twet/a in West Midlands, and 0.3 Mio. twet/a in South Netherlands (scenario Basis). Our survey shows that spatially differentiated potential estimations and the inclusion of crop residues other than cereal straw are urgently needed to improve the present rough estimations for crop residues which can be used in a sustainable way. The rather high spatial resolution of our analyses particularly allows for the support of regional stakeholders and prospective investors when it comes to questions of regional availability of biomass resources, transport distances to biomass conversion plants, and identification of suitable plant sites and sizes, respectively.  相似文献

Biogas from pig slurry in Mexico has potential to produce 21 PJ per year, equivalent to 3.5% of natural gas consumption in 2013. In this paper, three different scenarios are analysed: mono-digestion of pig slurry in a finisher farm (scenario 1); co-digestion of pig slurry and elephant grass in a finisher farm in situ (scenario 2) and co-digestion of pig slurry and elephant grass in centralised biogas plants (scenario 3). The digesters proposed are anaerobic high density polyurethane (HDPE) covered lagoons. HDPE centralised plants can have capital costs 5 times cheaper than European biogas plants. The economics of utilisation of biogas for electricity generation and as biomethane (a natural gas substitute) were investigated. Economic evaluations for on-site slurry digestion (Scenario 1) and on-site co-digestion of elephant grass and pig slurry (Scenario 2) showed potential for profitability with tariffs less than $US 0.12/kWhe. For centralised systems (Scenario 3) tariffs of $US 0.161/kWhe to $US 0.195/kWhe are required. Slurry transportation, energy use and harvest and ensiling account for 65% of the operational costs in centralised plants (Scenario 3). Biomethane production could compete with natural gas if a subsidy of 4.5 c/L diesel (1 m3 of biomethane) equivalent was available.  相似文献

Macroalgae have not met their full potential to date as biomass for the production of energy. One reason is the high cost associated with the pretreatment which breaks the biomass's crystalline structure and better exposes the fermentable sugars to anaerobes. In the attempt to overcome this technological barrier, the performance of a Hollander beater mechanical pretreatment is assessed in this paper. This pretreatment has been applied to a batch of Laminariaceae biomass and inoculated with sludge from a wastewater treatment plant. The derived biogas and methane yields were used as the responses of a complex system in order to identify the optimal system input variables by using the response surface methodology (RSM). The system's inputs considered are the mechanical pretreatment time (5–15 min range), the machine's chopping gap (76–836 μm) and the mesophilic to thermophilic range of temperatures (30–50 °C). The mechanical pretreatment was carried out with the purpose of enhancing the biodegradability of the macroalgal feedstock by increasing the specific surface area available during the anaerobic co-digestion. The pretreatment effects on the two considered responses are estimated, discussed and optimized using the tools provided by the statistical software Design-Expert v.8. The best biogas yield of treated macroalgae was found at 50 °C after 10 min of treatment, providing 52% extra biogas and 53% extra methane yield when compared to untreated samples at the same temperature conditions. The highest biogas rate achieved by treating the biomass was 685 cc gTS1, which is 430 cc gTS1 in terms of CH4 yield.  相似文献

The unsustainable use of fossil fuels has led to increased awareness and widespread research on the accessibility of renewable energy resources such as biogas. Biogas is a methane rich gas that is produced by anaerobic fermentation of organic material. Despite its potential to replace biomass in Africa, where over 70% of the households use wood fuel and agricultural waste for cooking, biogas technology has not been adopted by Sub-Saharan African countries compared to their Asian counterparts. This paper examines the socioeconomic constraints to adoption of biogas in Sub-Saharan Africa and explores factors that could enhance adoption of the technology. These include standardization and quality control, as well as an approach of integrated farming using biogas and slurry. The article recommends mobilization of local and external funds to promote biogas, use of ready to use funds such as the Clean Development Mechanisms in overcoming the initial construction costs of biogas units, and formation of user and disseminator associations to reduce costs by joint procurement and linkage to finance. It further advocates the promotion of multiple uses of biogas for purposes other than cooking and lighting. It is expected that widespread adoption of the technology could lead to self-sufficiency in household energy provision for cooking. This would facilitate environmental management and economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa.  相似文献

The European Union relies largely on bioenergy to achieve its climate and energy targets for 2020 and beyond. We assess, using Attributional Life Cycle Assessment (A-LCA), the climate change mitigation potential of three bioenergy power plants fuelled by residual biomass compared to a fossil system based on the European power generation mix. We study forest residues, cereal straws and cattle slurry. Our A-LCA methodology includes: i) supply chains and biogenic-CO2 flows; ii) explicit treatment of time of emissions; iii) instantaneous and time-integrated climate metrics.Power generation from cereal straws and cattle slurry can provide significant global warming mitigation by 2100 compared to current European electricity mix in all of the conditions considered. The mitigation potential of forest residues depends on the decay rate considered. Power generation from forest logging residues is an effective mitigation solution compared to the current EU mix only in conditions of decay rates above 5.2% a−1. Even with faster-decomposing feedstocks, bioenergy temporarily causes a STR(i) and STR(c) higher than the fossil system. The mitigation potential of bioenergy technologies is overestimated when biogenic-CO2 flows are excluded. Results based solely on supply-chain emissions can only be interpreted as an estimation of the long-term (>100 years) mitigation potential of bioenergy systems interrupted at the end of the lifetime of the plant and whose carbon stock is allowed to accumulate back.Strategies for bioenergy deployment should take into account possible increases in global warming rate and possible temporary increases in temperature anomaly as well as of cumulative radiative forcing.  相似文献

Three alternative soil amendments of organic wastes are considered: application of untreated animal manures, bioslurry from biogas digestion, composted materials, and biochar produced by pyrolysis cook-stoves. Application of untreated manures provides high input of available nutrients, which results in an initial flush in crop growth. However, risks of losing nutrients are high because manure is usually applied before sowing to avoid reduced yields due to phytotoxicity, resulting in increased losses by leaching or volatilization. Furthermore, the heterogeneous nature of untreated manures results in immobilization of nutrients by carbon-rich materials. A greater amount of nutrients are potentially available to crops from applied bioslurry. Typically 5–10% of the nitrogen is lost during anaerobic digestion, but bioslurry provides immediately available nutrients that can be applied as needed, so reducing risks of nutrient loss. If, however, bioslurry was applied in a single dose, losses would be similar in magnitude to untreated manures. Risks of nutrient losses are also lower when wastes are applied as composts, but in contrast to bioslurry, this is because the concentration of immediately available nutrients is very low, most nutrients being held in organic form that will become available only slowly over the growing season. Composts provide an option for single dose application, but a larger proportion of nitrogen is lost during composting (26–51%) than during anaerobic digestion (5–10%). Losses of nitrogen during pyrolysis are also very high (70–90%), but biochar can reduce losses of native soil nutrients by providing exchange sites that hold nutrients in the soil.  相似文献

Biogas digesters could help to reduce deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa by providing a source of energy that would otherwise be provided by woodfuel. However, the link between deforestation and use of woodfuel at global level is weak because fuel is often obtained from fallen wood or from sources felled for construction or land clearance. This paper examines the link between deforestation and use of woodfuel, and evaluates whether biogas digesters are likely to help reduce deforestation in Africa. Woodfuel production and consumption in Africa are increasing over time. Of the deforestation observed in 2010, we estimated that 70(±42)% can be attributed to woodfuel demand. Uncertainties in this figure arise from uncertainty in efficiency of energy use in different designs of wood-burning stoves, and the percentage of energy obtained from woodfuel in rural and urban populations. The contribution of woodfuel demand to deforestation is predicted to increase by 2030 to up to 83(±50)%. This is due to an increasing population requiring more woodfuel and so contributing to a higher proportion of total deforestation. Biogas production has the potential to reduce deforestation due to woodfuel demand by between 6 and 36% in 2010 and between 4 and 26% in 2030. This is equivalent to 10–40% of total deforestation in 2010, and 9–35% of total deforestation in 2030. The highest contribution to biogas production is likely to be from cattle manure, and the uncertainty in the potential of biogas to reduce deforestation is mainly associated with uncertainties in the amount of biogas produced per animal.  相似文献

Butanol produced from renewable feedstock is defined as an emerging biofuel and biochemical. Research efforts made during the last three decades on biochemical production of butanol via conventional ABE (acetone-ethanol-butanol) fermentation has tried to bring biobutanol close to competition with petrobutanol. However, each new effort of development has been often countered by new challenges, confining biobutanol production mostly to the laboratory scale. This review provides a systematic, comparative analysis of different steps in biochemical production of butanol and identifies the counteractive aspects and challenges to overcome. A special emphasis is given on process inhibitors, applied detoxification techniques, chemical supplements and research & development in industry in order to enhance and update ABE fermentation and make it cost effective. Biobutanol future lies in utilization of inexpensive cellulose enriched lignocellulosic hydrolysates and hyper-butanol producing bacteria, combined with specific detoxification techniques and followed by efficient continuous fermentation technologies together with in situ product recovery.  相似文献

Wheat straw is an abundant, cheap substrate that can be used for methane production. However, the nutrient content in straw is inadequate for methane fermentation. In this study, recycling digestate liquor was implemented in single-stage continuous stirred tank processes for enrichment of the nutrient content of straw with the aim of improving the methane production. The VS-based organic loading rate was set at 2 g/(L d) and the solid retention time at 40 days. When wheat straw alone was used as the substrate, the methane yields achieved with digestate liquor recycling was on average 240 ml CH4/g VS giving a 21% improvement over the processes without recycling. However, over time, the processes suffered from declining methane yields and poor stability evidenced by low pH. To maintain process stability, wheat straw was co-digested with sewage sludge or supplemented with macronutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous). As a result, the processes with digestate liquor recycling could be operated stably, achieving methane yields ranging from 288 to 296 ml CH4/g VS. Besides, the processes could not be operated sturdily with supplementation of macronutrients without digestate liquor recycling. The highest methane yield (296 ± 16 ml CH4/g VS) was achieved by co-digestion with sewage sludge plus recycling of digestate liquor after filtration (retention of nutrients and microorganisms). This was comparable to the maximum expected methane yield of 293 ± 13 ml CH4/g VS achieved in batch test. The present study therefore demonstrated that digestate liquor recycling could lead to a decreased dilution of vital nutrients from the reactors thereby rendering high process performance and stability.  相似文献

Biochemical conversion of lignocellulose to fermentable carbohydrates for ethanol production is now being implemented in large-scale industrial production. Applying hydrothermal pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis for the conversion process, a residue containing substantial amounts of lignin will be generated. So far little is known about the composition of this lignin residue which at present is mainly incinerated for heat and power generation and not yet converted so much into more valuable products. In this study, the structural and chemical composition of the solid and liquid fractions of lignin residue from wheat straw were analysed and processing factors discussed. Roughly 70 and 15% of the solid mass fraction consisted of lignin and ash, respectively. Residual carbohydrates mostly originated from hemicellulose in the liquid fraction and from cellulose in the solid fraction. The solid fraction also contained significant amounts of protein, which is a valuable by-product when used as animal feed or when enzymes and yeast cells are separated for process recycling. Silica was the dominant constituent in the mineral fraction and except for few fragments of lignified middle lamellae most particles in the solid fraction appeared as silica coated by lignin, hampering separation of the two components before incineration or refinement of the residue.  相似文献

Biogas as a technology and the factors that affect its productivity have both been well studied. Research has previously been done to look at the impact of temperature, pH, organic loading rate, carbon-to-nitrogen ratios, microbial populations and hydraulic retention time on different scales of biogas operations. Small scale biogas installations, of which many millions have been constructed and seem to be performing well, have been chosen as the area of focus for this paper. Such systems allow energy generation on site, thereby eliminating the need for energy intensive transport. This review paper explores the factors that govern the productivity and operational stability of biogas digesters, and goes on to highlight the most important factors for small scale operation. The review reveals that the key factors that govern the productivity and stability of small scale systems are feedstock variability, retention time, temperature and acidity of the system. These are the main parameters which should, therefore, be considered when looking into the potential of biogas as a widespread technology to be deployed to meet energy demands.  相似文献

Operational experiences and strategies to get suitable chemolithoautotrophic sulfide-oxidizing biomass from activated sludge wastewater treatment plant for its deploying in a full-scale biogas desulfurization plant are described. An economic nutrient source was applied to foster microbial selection and rapid growth. Respirometry was implemented on full-scale installations to monitor the ability of the specialized bacteria consortium to oxidize reduced sulfur i.e. H2S. During the deployment in the full-scale desulfurization reactor, intermittent sulfide feed from biogas scrubbing was performed to accelerate the startup the desulfurization process.  相似文献

Enzymatic hydrolysis beyond 15% solid loading offers many advantages such as increased sugar and ethanol concentrations and decreased capital cost. However, difficult mixing and handling limited its industrialized application. A novel intensification method, periodic peristalsis, had been exploited to improve the high solids enzymatic hydrolysis performance of steam exploded corn stover (SECS). The optimal steam explosion conditions were 200 °C and 8 min, under which glucan and xylan recovery was 94.3% and 64.8%, respectively. Glucan and xylan conversions in periodic peristalsis enzymatic hydrolysis (PPEH) were 28.0–38.5% and 25.0–36.0% higher than those in static state enzymatic hydrolysis with solid loading increasing from 1% to 30%, respectively, while they were 1.0–11.2% and 3.0–9.2% higher than those in incubator shaker enzymatic hydrolysis (ISEH). Glucan and xylan conversion in PPEH at 21% solid loading reached 71.2% and 70.3%, respectively. Periodic peristalsis also facilitated fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis of which SECS was added completely before transition point. Results presented that PPEH shortened the transition point time from solid state to slurry state, decreased the viscosity of hydrolysis mixture, and reduced the denaturation effect of enzymes compared with ISEH, and hence improve the high solids enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency.  相似文献
