A combined optical-thermal model is presented for near-infrared laser heating of carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites in an automated tape placement process. For the first time a three dimensional ray tracing model is presented for a near-infrared laser tape placement process which captures the unique anisotropic scattering behaviour of the composite. Predicted irradiance distributions on the composite are subsequently applied to a 2D non-linear finite element thermal model. It is shown that a shadow is present in the process and causes a significant drop in temperature prior to the consolidation zone. The effect of various source and surface model simplifications was also studied. The modelled temperature profiles agree well with experimental data. Substrate fibre orientation was investigated and found to have only a small influence on the temperature history.  相似文献

The multi-step MW reduction technique was developed in this study to obtain reduced graphene oxides; EG, RGO-1, and RGO-2 with MW irradiation time of 1, 2, and 3 min, respectively. Results of TGA, IR, and elemental analysis demonstrated that the degree of reduction of GO increased with increasing the MW irradiation time. Overall, 3 min of MW irradiation of GO in 3 steps was sufficient to obtain highly reduced GO (C/O ratio 10.38 by elemental analysis). The electrical percolation threshold of composites was observed as 1 wt% and 0.3 wt% for RGO-1 and RGO-2, respectively. Even at 0.5 wt% loading of RGO-2 in epoxy, the Tg value of the composite increased by 10 °C, indicating a strong interfacial interaction between graphene and epoxy resin.  相似文献

In this work multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in a polymer matrix have been used for strain sensing of the resulting nanocomposite under tensile loading. This was achieved by measuring the relative electrical resistance change (ΔR/R0) in conductive polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF)/MWCNTs nanocomposites prepared by melt-mixing with varying filler content from 0.5 wt.% to 8 wt.%. Two main parameters were systematically studied. The PVDF/MWCNTs mixing procedure that results in a successful MWCNTs dispersion, and the effect of MWCNTs content on material’s sensing behaviour. The samples were subjected to tensile loading and the longitudinal strain was monitored together with the longitudinal electrical resistance. The results showed that MWCNTs dispersed in insulating PVDF matrix have the potential to be used as a sensitive network to monitor the strain levels in polymer/carbon nanotube nanocomposites as the deformation level of each sample was being reflected by the resistance changes.  相似文献

Bulk acoustic waves (BAWs) are used to align multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in polymer composite materials. MWCNTs are first dispersed in the liquid state of a thermoset resin and aligned using standing BAWs. Cross-linking of the resin fixates the aligned MWCNTs in the polymer matrix material. We have quantified the alignment obtained with this method on the macro, micro, and nanoscale, and it is found to be similar to other alignment techniques such as stretching, slicing, and wet spinning. The elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength of composite material specimens with aligned MWCNTs, fabricated using this technique, are evaluated and compared with specimens consisting of randomly oriented MWCNTs and resin material without MWCNTs. Different MWCNT loading rates are considered. The elastic modulus of composite material specimens with only 0.15 weight percent aligned MWCNTs is observed to be 44% higher than specimens with randomly oriented MWCNTs, and 51% higher than specimens without MWCNTs. However, further increasing the MWCNT loading rate does not significantly increase the elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength, likely because of insufficient dispersion of MWCNTs in the thermoset matrix material.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity of graphene, multi-wall carbon nanotubes, carbon black nanopowders and graphite powder is characterized using paper-like films and by means of powder compression. The large difference in surface area of these materials results in different packing density and number of contact spots, influencing the macroscopic conductivity of the compacts during powder compression. The results are compared with the percolation threshold and final conductivity of polypropylene (PP) composites, using latex technology for the incorporation of the carbon fillers in the polymer. Even though the PP composites produced in this work exhibit percolation thresholds as low as 0.3 wt.%, the final conductivity for all the composites is below 1.5 S/m. Reasons why the high value of ∼103 S/m, which is obtained for graphene- and nanotube-based paper films or graphite compacts, is not reached for the composites are investigated.  相似文献

The polymer composites composed of graphene foam (GF), graphene sheets (GSs) and pliable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were fabricated and their thermal properties were investigated. Due to the unique interconnected structure of GF, the thermal conductivity of GF/PDMS composite reaches 0.56 W m−1 K−1, which is about 300% that of pure PDMS, and 20% higher than that of GS/PDMS composite with the same graphene loading of 0.7 wt%. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is (80–137) × 10−6/K within 25–150 °C, much lower than those of GS/PDMS composite and pure PDMS. In addition, it also shows superior thermal and dimensional stability. All above results demonstrate that the GF/PDMS composite is a good candidate for thermal interface materials, which could be applied in the thermal management of electronic devices, etc.  相似文献

The ability of a modern near infra-red laser tape placement system to produce high-quality laminates is investigated by performing short beam strength tests on samples manufactured at different process temperatures from 400 °C to 600 °C at placement rates of 100 mm/s and 400 mm/s. The temperature history in tape placement is highly dynamic and the correlation between the process control temperature, laser power and the consolidation temperature is not well understood. The complete temperature history was therefore estimated with a previously developed optical-thermal model and validated using long wave infra-red imaging. Short beam strengths equivalent to conventional manufacturing methods were found for placement rates of 400 mm/s. Failure modes of the samples were elucidated by scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surfaces. Signs of degradation were observed on samples prepared with a 600 °C process temperature at 100 mm/s, however none was evidenced at 400 mm/s for the same process temperature.  相似文献

A numerical method is developed to model shear-strengthening of reinforced concrete beam by using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Tensile crack is simulated by a non-linear spring element with softening behavior ahead of the crack tip to model the cohesive zone in concrete. A truss element is used, parallel to the spring element, to simulate the energy dissipation rate by the FRP. The strain energy release rate is calculated directly by using a virtual crack closure technique. It is observed that the length of the fracture process zone (FPZ) increases with the application of FRP shear-strengthening. The present model shows that the main diagonal crack is formed at the support in the control beam while it appears through the shear span in the shear-strengthened beam. Another important observation is that the load capacity increases with the number of CFRP sheets in the shear span.  相似文献

In recent years, both industrial and academic world are focussing their attention toward the development of sustainable composites, reinforced with natural fibres. In particular, among the natural fibres (i.e. animal, vegetable or mineral) that can be used as reinforcement, the basalt ones represent the most interesting for their properties. The aim of this review is to illustrate the results of research on this topical subject. In the introduction, mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of basalt fibre have been reviewed. Moreover, its main manufacturing technologies have been described. Then, the effect of using this mineral fibre as reinforcement of different matrices as polymer (both thermoplastic and thermoset), metal and concrete has been presented. Furthermore, an overview on the application of this fibre in biodegradable matrix composites and in hybrid composites has been provided. Finally, the studies on the industrial applications of basalt fibre reinforced composites have been reviewed.  相似文献

Understanding the reinforcing mechanisms should be meaningful for preparation of new polymer composites. The reinforcing mechanisms of the inorganic particulate-filled polymer composites were analyzed and discussed in the present paper, and concluded several reinforcing theories on the basis of the previous studies, such as interfacial adhesion reinforcing theory, filler inducing crystallization reinforcing theory, filler frame reinforcing theory, and synergistic reinforcing effect theory. The reinforcing effects should be related closely to the filler shape and size, in addition to the filler concentration and dispersion in the matrix. Consequently, to describe accurately the reinforcing mechanisms of the composites, two or more reinforcing theories should be used for the actual composite system, and one of among them should be usually as the major reinforcing mechanism. Finally, the quantitative characterization of the reinforcement was described.  相似文献

A new benzimidazolium derivative, the benzimidazolium-N,N′-hexadecane-2-hydroxy-ethyl bromide (Bz) featuring two geminal hexadecyl hydrophobic buttress has been synthesized and used for the functionalization of sodium montmorillonite (MMT-Na) via cationic exchange process. The resulting benzimidazolium-modified MMT (MMT-Bz) exhibits a large d-spacing of 3 nm between silicate layers and shows a high thermal stability compared to the commonly used clay modified alkyl ammonium salts (cloisite 20A and cloisite 20B). MMT-Bz was incorporated in high density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix via melt mixing method to produce HDPE/MMT-Bz nanocomposites. The microstructure and the morphology of these nanocomposites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The dispersion state of the organoclay within HDPE was monitored by UV–Vis spectroscopy and melt rheology. A more homogeneous dispersion or a greater content of the MMT-Bz in the matrix produced stronger solid-like and non-terminal behavior in the nanocomposites. Tensile properties and thermal stability were evaluated and discussed on the basis of the amount of clay incorporated within the nanocomposites. The intercalated structure in the nanocomposites, resulting from both the better dispersion/distribution of clay nano-platelets and their strong interaction with the polymer chains, provides the driving force to significantly enhance the HDPE properties.  相似文献

Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) have the capacity to return large strains by external stimuli. Among various SMPs, shape-memory epoxy has received considerable attention because of its superior mechanical and thermal properties as well as excellent shape-memory performance. In this study, short glass fibre-reinforced shape-memory hydro-epoxy composites are developed to improve further the mechanical property of shape-memory epoxy resin. The thermomechanical and shape-memory properties of the developed composite materials are investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis, bend test and shape recovery test. The results indicate that the glass modulus and bend strength of the developed composite materials initially increase and then slightly decrease with increasing short glass fibre content. The glass transition temperature of the developed composite materials does not change with increasing short glass fibre. When the short glass fibre content is less than 4.5 wt.%, full recovery can be observed after only several minutes at different temperatures. The shape-memory property of the composite materials is not affected greatly. However, when the short glass fibre content is more than 4.5 wt.%, the material would be destroyed after deformation.  相似文献

Interface control and dispersion of graphene base nanomaterials in polymer matrix are challenging to develop high comprehensive nanocomposites due to their strong interlayer cohesive energy and chemical inertia. In this research, an efficient approach is presented to functionalize reduced graphene oxide nanosheets by N-[3-(trimethoxylsilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine, which is dispersed into polyacrylonitrile to prepare N-[3-(trimethoxylsilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine – reduced graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile nanocomposites. A thermogravimetric analysis technique was employed to evaluate thermal properties of the nanocomposites. The tribological properties of the polyacrylonitrile/graphene nanocomposites were investigated. The morphologies and volume of the worn surface were examined using a 3D profilometer. The impact of loading ratio on friction coefficient, carry-bearing capacity and durability were studied. The N-[3-(trimethoxylsilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine – reduced graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile nanocomposite with appropriate loading ratio of reduced graphene oxide exhibited a high load-bearing capacity and durability. Therefore, the polyacrylonitrile/graphene nanocomposite shows promising potential to industrial applications involving the lubrication and anti-wear.  相似文献

The porosity and pore size distributions are pore structure parameters which have a direct effect on the permeability of cement paste as well as its durability. This paper is based on laboratory programs comparing the porosity, pore size distributions and water absorption with varying ageing processes of three commercial polymer-modified mortars (SBR, PAE and VAE) as well as unmodified conventional mortar mixes exposed to different curing conditions. It was found that an increase in polymer loading has resulted in a significant reduce in porosity and water absorption in polymer-modified mortars. Furthermore, the SBR3 mix exhibited the most superior properties of the study in all conditions at different ages of curing.  相似文献

Carbon fiber felt with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by immersing three-dimensional (3D) felt into CNT aqueous solution (with dispersant) followed by removing water with different drying methods. Epoxy resin was then introduced into the felt to obtain 3D fiber felt/CNTs modified epoxy composites. This paper highlights the effect of drying method on macro-morphologies of the felt, morphological dispersion of CNTs and some relevant properties of the composites, including electrical conductivity and flexural performance. The results demonstrate that compared to the commonly used heat drying method, freeze drying technique possesses obvious advantages for the fabrication of fiber felt/CNT modified epoxy composites.  相似文献

The micromechanical damage and strength of discontinuous fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites was simulated by the Spring Element Model (SEM), and SEM was compared with Periodic Unit-Cell (PUC) simulation to clarify the potential of SEM. Tensile failure simulations indicate that SEM can be effectively used to predict the strength of long discontinuous fiber reinforced composites. The transition between matrix cracking mode and fiber breaking mode is also discussed to clarify the fiber length at which SEM can be used to predict strength. In addition, the strengths predicted with SEM are compared with the results of experiments on long discontinuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites.  相似文献

The drive towards rapid cure thermosetting composites requires a better understanding of the residual stresses that develop during curing. This study investigates the impact of residual stresses on the interlaminar shear strength of resin-infused epoxy/anhydride carbon-fibre laminates. The magnitude of the residual stress was varied by changing the initial injection cure temperature between 75 °C and 145 °C. The corresponding cycle times and the final glass transition temperature of the resin were also measured. The experimentally measured chemical shrinkage and thermal expansion properties of the resin after vitrification were used as inputs to a finite element analysis to calculate the peak residual stresses in the composite. An increase in the initial cure temperature from 85 to 135 °C resulted in an increase of 25% in the residual stress, which led to an experimentally measured reduction in the composite’s short beam shear strength of approximately 16% (8 MPa), in good agreement with model prediction.  相似文献

Transparent conductive composites can be achieved from PVDF–MWCNT at very low concentration of MWCNT. These composites show different degree of UV–Visible radiation absorption depending on MWCNT concentration in composites. The composition dependent dielectric properties and AC conductivity were also measured for these composites. Properties like AC conductivity, dielectric constant and loss are increasing with filler concentration. The variations of DC conductivity against composition and temperature are also reported. The electrical hysteresis and electrical set are observed for PVDF–MWCNT composites when subjected to heating–cooling cycle. The validity of different theoretical models depicting percolation threshold with respect to DC conductivity was tested for these composites.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP)-based composites containing 20 wt.% wool fibres were successfully prepared using a simple melt blending procedure. A blend of a commercial-grade PP and a maleinised PP was chosen as the matrix. To investigate the effects of modifying the fibre surface on the fibre/matrix adhesion, wool fibres were used as received, oxidised, or functionalised with a silane-based coupling agent, capable in principle of reacting with both the fibres and the polyolefinic matrix. The silanisation of the fibres and the consequent surface modifications were assessed using infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The resulting PP-based composites were thoroughly characterised in terms of their morphology, thermal stability and mechanical behaviour.  相似文献
