Managing Impressions in a Virtual Environment: Is Ethnic Diversity a Self‐Presentation Strategy for Colleges and Universities?

This study examines how institutions of higher education use their websites to present diversity to build relationships and recruit prospective students. It involves a content analysis of the homepages of the 163 institutions that U.S. News named to the 2006 list of the country’s best comprehensive colleges and universities. The results showed that institutions in the West published more religious references and fewer photographs of women than institutions in other regions, and references to international programs were most prevalent in the Midwest. Overall, few institutions mention racial or ethnic diversity on their campuses, although visual representations of diversity in photographs are more common than textual references.

Internet Initiated Relationships: Associations Between Age and Involvement in Online Dating

We used data from an online survey ( N = 175) about Internet romance to explore the possibility that age might be associated with variation in people's perceptions of and experiences with online personals ads and Internet dating sites. Results suggest that involvement in online dating may increase rather than decrease with age and that older adults may turn to online dating in part as a response to diminishing satisfaction with and use of more conventional ways of establishing romances. Age was also unrelated to proxy measures of the stigma associated with online dating (i.e., whether respondents had told others they date online, mean rated favorability of responses to such disclosure). Possible explanations for and implications of these findings are discussed.     

When Online Dating Partners Meet Offline: The Effect of Modality Switching on Relational Communication Between Online Daters

Despite the popularity of online dating sites, little is known about what occurs when online dating partners choose to communicate offline. Drawing upon the modality switching perspective, the present study assessed a national sample of online daters to determine whether face‐to‐face (FtF) relational outcomes could be predicted by the amount of online communication prior to the initial FtF meeting. Results were consistent with the hypothesized curvilinear relationship between the amount of online communication and perceptions of relational messages (intimacy, composure, informality, social orientation), forecasts of the future of the relationship, and information seeking behavior when meeting their partner FtF. The results provide support for the modality switching perspective, and offer important insight for online daters.     

Managing QoS for Multimedia Applications in the Differentiated Services Environment

The overall quality of network connections has a significant impact on the performance of networked applications. As a result, Quality-of-Service (QoS) management for networked multimedia applications over IP is a significant and immediate challenge. While differentiated services (DiffServ) provide a sense of resource allocation and QoS, they do not guarantee QoS. This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a content-aware bandwidth broker (CABB) that manages QoS for multimedia applications in a DiffServ environment. CABB allocates network resources to multimedia flows based on client requirements, the adaptability of the application, and its tolerance to network level parameters such as bandwidth, delay, and latency. It has been implemented and evaluated using the NS-2 simulator toolkit. Evaluations show that CABB improves network resource allocations and increases overall throughput. Furthermore multimedia application flows are better managed and controlled, improving perceived QoS and avoiding possible congestion at core routers.

From the Side of Both Relationship Initiator and Responder: The Importance of Look and Geographical Distance in Online Dating

Physical appearance is known to influence individuals’ search for a romantic relationship. However, previous studies seldom consider how this factor plays its role at two sides of an online dating relationship formation (including dating and sexual intention). This study leverages data from a photo-based dating app to address this issue and further explore the importance of geographical distance. Due to the app's unique design, we can better isolate the effects of physical attractiveness. In addition, we employ human face recognition techniques based on machine learning to enable efficient and scalable computation of each user's physical attractiveness. Our analyses reveal the following findings: First, physical appearance plays different roles in people's decisions to initiate or respond to a dating request. Second, geographical distance remains an important consideration, but only in some scenarios involving similar or different physical attractiveness levels between the initiators and responders.     

Behavioral Model of Online Purchasers in E-Commerce Environment

This research studied the behavioral factors of Internet users when making an on-line purchase. A total of 424 responses were collected in a survey, comprising of 179 online responses and 245 mailed responses. The research shows that demographic and most psychological factors, as well as web-savvy features of a virtual storefront appear non influential in determining the probability of an Internet user making a purchase. This is contrary to beliefs held by most e-commerce businesses. The research findings indicate that e-commerce businesses should focus on employing logo assurance services, state-of-the-art security technology, provide an online customer-service center, establish warranties for products and services sold, maintain credit card payment facilities, and lastly, establish a policy for conflict resolution in the event of inaccurate billings. With the research results, a behavioral model of online purchasers is established. The behavioral model could assist e-commerce businesses to focus on the real concerns of consumers. The contribution of the model is to allow e-commerce businesses to streamline their online activities to cater to the major behavioral factors that influence consumers to purchase online. This could greatly increase the ability of e-commerce businesses to offer competitive virtue selling.     

Collaboration and Teamwork: Immersion and Presence in an Online Learning Environment

In the world of OTIS, an online Internet School for occupational therapists, students from four European countries were encouraged to work collaboratively through problem-based learning by interacting with each other in a virtual semi-immersive environment. This paper describes, often in their own words, the experience of European occupational therapy students working together across national and cultural boundaries. Collaboration and teamwork were facilitated exclusively through an online environment, since the students never met each other physically during the OTIS pilot course. The aim of the paper is to explore the observations that (1) there was little interaction between students from different tutorial groups and (2) virtual teamwork developed in each of the cross-cultural tutorial groups. Synchronous data from the students was captured during tutorial sessions and peer-booked meetings and analyzed using the qualitative constructs of immersion, presence and reflection in learning. The findings indicate that immersion was experienced only to a certain extent. However, students found both presence and shared presence, within their tutorial groups, to help collaboration and teamwork. Other evidence suggests that communities of interest were established. Further study is proposed to support group work in an online learning environment. It is possible to conclude that collaborative systems can be designed, which encourage students to build trust and teamwork in a cross cultural online learning environment.This revised version was published online in March 2005 with corrections to the cover dateFunded by the European Union through the TENTelecom programme.

"For she who knows who she is:" Managing Accountability in Online Forum Messages

The recent application of Conversation Analysis (CA) to online forum communication has been successful in explicating the sequential ties among messages. In this article, we build on those foundations and show how CA's illumination of the structural resources of interaction can provide an analysis of accountable action in an online forum setting. We report a case study to illustrate how a user, in carrying off a 'declaration of love,' attends to her accountability in posting such a message. We analyse the message's placement as an initiating first turn; its prefatory work as an announcement; its selection of next speaker; and its internal design as a turn-at-interaction. We show how these features are oriented to in the first message sent in response. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the usefulness of CA in illuminating users' orientation to the accountable norms of online behavior.

面向电子政务环境的联网审计模式与支撑平台研究

联网审计是当前电子政务环境下政府审计的一种新型模式,是政府审计的未来发展方向。本文在分析目前常见的联网审计模式的基础上,提出了一种面向电子政务环境的基于平台的联网审计模式,在此基础上,设计了一种支持面向电子政务环境联网审计模式的联网审计支撑平台,详细分析了联网审计支撑平台的体系结构和系统构成。最后,对实现联网审计支撑平台的联网审计分析模型构建、审计信息安全等关键技术进行了研究。     

在线问诊环境下细粒度双边访问控制方案

随着在线问诊技术不断发展,越来越多的患者选择在线咨询自己的病情,由于患者通常会二次甚至多次在线咨询病情,这不仅会导致病历信息发生泄漏,而且会使医护人员的工作量剧增。为此需要对病人的病历信息进行加密处理,并在此条件下提高医护人员的工作效率。目前已有的ABE方案只能通过患者制定访问控制策略对医护人员进行选择从而保护自己的隐私信息,而医护人员只能从大量的病历中逐一检索出自己需要的信息,导致其工作量剧增。针对以上问题提出了一种支持细粒度双边访问控制的密文策略属性基加密方案,并结合区块链技术与IPFS存储技术对数据进行存储。该方案对病人的病历信息进行加密后上传至IPFS系统中,并将由IPFS系统生成的唯一哈希索引上传至区块链中。利用属性基加密技术在保护用户隐私同时,实现细粒度的双边访问控制。安全性分析表明,该方案在随机谕言机模型下具有选择明文攻击下的不可区分性。仿真结果表明,与类似方案相比,所提方案提高了用户的计算效率。     

Traditional and Online IPO Processes: Are there Differences in after-Market Trading and Market Making?

In this study we compare the after-market trading and market making activities of a sample of Nasdaq online initial public offerings (IPOs) to a matched sample of traditional IPOs. We find that online IPOs have significantly higher turnover in after-market trading, and more market makers, dealers, and electronic communications networks servicing their trading activities than traditional IPOs. We find no difference between the samples in after-market volumes, block trades, or the number of dealers actually engaged in trading. We believe this provides some support for the notion that distribution of IPOs to online customers facilitates liquidity in the after-market, at least for the smaller investor. We also believe that the evidence implies that control of the after-market trading is still in the hands of the institutional investor and that the advantages the Internet offers as a global communication network are at this point not being fully utilized.
