Hand preferences for a coordinated bimanual task were assessed in 109 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Hand preference was evaluated for 4 test sessions using bouts and frequencies of hand use to compare the sensitivity of each level of analysis in evaluating individual variation in handedness. Overall, significant population-level right-handedness was found using several different measures of hand use. Handedness indices based on bouts and frequencies were highly and significantly correlated. Moreover, hand preferences were consistent across tests despite efforts to situationally bias preference during each test. Taken together, these data do not support the view that bouts are a better level of analysis for evaluating hand preference. The results further suggest that hand preferences for coordinated bimanual actions are not influenced by situational factors and may reflect an inherent specialization of the left hemisphere for motor skill. The effect of birth order on hand preference was assessed in a sample of 154 captive-born chimpanzees. Subjects were classified as first, middle, or latter born using 2 classification criteria based on their birth order. Hand preference was measured using a task that elicited coordinated bimanual actions. Significant birth-order effects were found for both classification criteria, with first- and latter-born subjects exhibiting a lesser degree of right-handedness compared with middle-born subjects. These data suggest that biological rather than sociological factors play a greater role in explaining the observed birth-order effects on hand preference in humans. Three experiments assessed coupling phenomena in the coordination of bimanual force pulses. Experiment 1 required symmetric force pulses (equal target forces and rise times for both hands) using the index finger of each hand. As the authors expected, on the basis of bimanual pointing movement results, this experiment revealed positive correlations between both the force rise times and the force amplitudes of the two hands. Experiments 2 and 3 included asymmetric conditions with different target force amplitudes (Experiment 2) or target rise times (Experiment 3). In Experiment 2 force amplitudes but not rise times were fully decoupled in the asymmetric condition. In the asymmetric condition of Experiment 3, however, neither rise times nor force amplitudes were fully decoupled. The results suggest a hierarchical control structure with temporal control dominating nontemporal control of bimanual force coordination. Using multiple measures of hand preference, the authors investigated lateralization at an individual level in 21 common marmosets. Despite showing group biases for sensory and communication functions, these same marmosets did not show a group bias in direction of lateralized hand use. Hand preferences were recorded on four novel reaching tasks requiring different levels of visual guidance and postural control. As found for simple food holding (with the same subjects), they displayed strong individual hand preferences but no group bias indicative of handedness. The strength of hand preference was influenced by task demands: stronger preferences were expressed when subjects adopted a suspended posture, and when "successful" versus "unsuccessful" foraging strategies were compared. Comparisons between visuospatial reaching and simple food holding preferences also revealed that half of the subjects displayed a division of function between the hands/hemispheres; subjects displayed opposing preferences in simple and visuospatial reaching, which would be beneficial for the performance of coordinated bimanual tasks. Given the apparent absence of a selective advantage for handedness, the authors suggest that hand preferences may reflect hemispheric dominance of other cognitive domains (i.e., temperament). Lateral preference was examined in spontaneous feeding actions in 2 troops of wild vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Processing of 4 foods (termites, leaf shoots, sugarcane, and fruit) was studied. Actions included unimanual reaching to moving objects, operating from an unstable posture, and coordinated bimanual processing. Between 19 and 31 subjects were available, according to the task. In 2 tasks, laterality of 2 independent stages was measured separately, giving 6 measures in all. On 4 of these measures, most monkeys were ambipreferent, and only a few showed significant hand preferences. Only for termite feeding and detaching material from fruits did the majority show significant lateralization; no tasks elicited exclusive use of 1 hand. Preference appeared labile, because in 2 tasks, population trends reversed with increasing age. No population trends to left or right were found; instead, these monkeys showed ambilaterality, with lateralization associated with task complexity. This research examined hand preference for a bimanual task in 45 tufted capuchin (Cebus apella) and 55 rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) monkeys. Investigators presented subjects with plastic tubes lined with food and noted which hand the animals used to hold the tubes and which hand the animals used to remove the food. Several significant findings emerged from this investigation. First, rhesus macaques, but not tufted capuchins, exhibited a population-level bias toward use of the right hand (although the difference in direction of hand preference between species was not significant). Second, capuchins exhibited greater hand preference strength than did macaques. Third, among capuchins, but not among macaques, hand preference strength was greater for adults than for immatures. Finally, both species used their index digit to remove food most frequently when compared with other digits. Findings of hand preference direction and strength in this study were compared with other findings noted for chimpanzees which performed a bimanual tube task in a previous study. The authors conclude that using the same procedure to compare hand preference across species represents a powerful research tool that can lead to a more complete understanding of the evolution and ontogenesis of primate handedness.  相似文献

Defined as a spontaneous stone-directed noninstrumental manipulative behavior, and comprised of multiple one-handed and (a)symmetrical/(un)coordinated two-handed patterns, stone handling (SH) is a good candidate for the study of complexity in object manipulation. We present a cross-sectional developmental analysis of SH complexity in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), through the combined investigation of bimanuality, coordination, and symmetry in hand use. Bimanual SH patterns were more frequent than unimanual patterns. Among bimanual patterns, coordinated actions were more frequent than uncoordinated ones. We recorded five asymmetrical coordinated SH patterns with manual role differentiation, a form of hand use reminiscent of complex actions involving the use of tools in monkeys and apes. Bimanuality in SH was affected by body posture. Aging individuals performed less bimanual and less coordinated SH patterns than younger individuals. Our result on senescent males performing less bimanual patterns than senescent females was consistent with sex differences found in the late deterioration of complex manual movements in other species. Although some SH patterns represent a high degree of behavioral complexity, our results suggest that SH behavior is not as complex as tool-use or tool-manufacture in other nonhuman primates and hominids. Heritability of hand preference was tested in a sample of 188 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Hand preference was measured by coordinated bimanual actions, and concordance percentages were compared between parents and offspring and siblings. Among siblings, concordance percentages were compared for dyads in which both individuals were raised by chimpanzees, both were raised by humans, or 1 was raised in each environment. The results indicated population-level right hand preferences for coordinated bimanual actions. There were no significant associations in hand preference between parents and offspring. In full and maternal half siblings, concordance in hand preference was significantly greater than chance in mother and human-reared individuals but not in cross-fostered dyads. The cumulative results suggest that the direction of hand preference is heritable in chimpanzees but the mechanism of transmission is not genetic. Several environmental explanations are proposed to explain the findings, including the potential role of maternal cradling bias and in utero fetal position. Hand preferences for a coordinated bimanual task were assessed in a sample of 31 captive gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) and 19 captive orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) and were compared with chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) hand preferences in subjects that were matched on the basis of age, sex, and rearing history. The task required that the apes remove food from the inside edges of a symmetrical polyvinyl chloride pipe presented to them in their home cages. The results indicate significant species differences with chimpanzees showing population-level right-handedness and orangutans showing population-level left-handedness. The gorillas showed a nonsignificant trend toward right-handedness. The results are discussed in terms of possible ecological or biomechanical factors that may influence hand preferences in different ape species. The objective of this study was to investigate whether and how parotid saliva flow and composition correlated with the perception of gustatory and/or trigeminal stimuli in foods. Thirty (15 male and 15 female) subjects tasted seven foods or beverages (lemonade, beer, wine, soup, methyl cellulose, peanut butter, and crackers) with three levels each of a gustatory or trigeminal stimulus and rated the perceived intensity of the corresponding sensation over time using the time-intensity (TI) method while their parotid saliva was being collected. Salivary flow rates of males were significantly higher than those of females for all stimuli (p < 0.001). That did not translate, however, into consistent differences in perception of sensory attributes between males and females. Significant positive correlations were found between saliva flow and (1) TI parameters for adhesiveness of peanut butter and cohesiveness of mass of crackers (p < 0.05 or lower) and (2) time from intake to swallowing of crackers and peanut butter (p < 0.05). No correlations were found between saliva composition (e.g., sodium and total protein) and TI parameters. These results indicate that parotid saliva flow may correlate with the perception of some texture and mouthfeel attributes (presumably through oral work and bolus formation) but not with that of the taste attributes examined in this study (at the concentrations studied).  相似文献

Whether nonhuman primates exhibit population level right manual bias remains a controversial topic. In captive baboons, population-level right-handedness has been reported for both coordinated bimanual actions and communicative gestures. However, some authors remain skeptical of these findings on both methodological and theoretical grounds. Here, we demonstrated the robustness and the consistency across time of the pattern of right-handedness for a species-specific communicative gesture in olive baboons (Papio anubis). First, we showed significant correlations in the 26 retested baboons for the measures of hand preferences between the first and the second session conducted 4 years later (2005–2009) by an observer blind to the previous handedness data. Second, the replication of the study in 96 novel individuals revealed a similar degree of population-level right-handedness than the one expressed in the first group of 66 subjects investigated in 2005. The implications of the findings are discussed within a theoretical framework about the origin of hemispheric specialization for language. BACKGROUND: Peanut is the most common cause of severe or fatal food-associated anaphylaxis. Studies indicate that peanut extracts contain many allergenic proteins. The identification of major and minor allergenic components is necessary for standardization of experimental and diagnostic extracts. OBJECTIVE: To identify further major and minor allergenic components of peanut extract using a large population of peanut allergics, and to relate serological findings to clinical parameters. METHODS: The crude peanut extract was fractionated by fast protein liquid chromatography and the IgE binding proteins identified by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by western blotting. Serum from 89 peanut allergics with a positive history of peanut allergy and elevated specific IgE and control serum from four atopic and four non-atopic, non-peanut allergics were used. RESULTS: Nineteen peanut proteins were found to bind IgE from peanut allergic sera. Over 70% of subjects reacted to protein bands of 63 and 17 kDa (consistent with Ara h 1 and Ara h 2, respectively), confirming the importance of these two proteins as major allergens. A high proportion of patient sera also bound proteins at 15, 10, 30, 18 and 51 kDa in decreasing order. The percentage of cases with sensitivity to a 15 kDa protein was found to be higher in patient groups with severe reactions to peanut. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the diversity of peanut allergens. Diagnostic extracts containing a high proportion of the 15 kDa component may aid in diagnosis.  相似文献

Single and alternating hand tapping were compared to test the hypothesis that coordination during rhythmic movements is mediated by the control of specific time intervals. In Experiment 1, an auditory metronome was used to indicate a set of timing patterns in which a 1-s interval was divided into 2 subintervals. Performance, measured in terms of the deviation from the target patterns and variability, was similar under conditions in which the finger taps were made with 1 hand or alternated between the 2 hands. In Experiment 2, the modality of the metronome (auditory or visual) was found to influence the manner in which the produced intervals deviated from the target patterns. These results challenge the notion that bimanual coordination emerges from coupling constraints intrinsic to the 2-hand system. They are in accord with a framework that emphasizes the control of specific time intervals to form a series of well-defined motor events. The supplementary motor area (SMA) was reversibly inactivated by muscimol microinfusion in two monkeys while they were performing two motor tasks: (1) a delayed conditional bimanual drawer pulling and grasping sequence which was initiated on a self-paced basis; (2) a unimanual reach and grasp task (modified Kluver board task). Unilateral or bilateral inactivation of the SMA induced a prominent deficit in trial initiation of bimanual sequential movements, affecting the hand contralateral to the inactivated side or both hands, respectively. The deficit was a long lasting (10-15 min or more) inability of the monkey to place its hand (s) in the ready position on start touch-sensitive pads, a condition required to initiate the drawer task. However, if after such a deficit period, the experimenter put his hand on the start touch-sensitive pad to initiate the trial, then the monkey executed the drawer task without obvious motor deficit. SMA inactivation did not affect unimanual reaching and grasping movements in the board task. In contrast to the SMA, inactivation of other motor areas (primary, premotor dorsal, anterior intraparietal area) did not affect the initiation of movement sequences in the drawer task. These data thus indicate that the SMA plays a crucial and specific role in initiation of self-paced movement sequences. However, SMA inactivation did not prevent the monkeys to perform coordinated movements of the two forelimbs and hands, indicating that SMA is not necessary for bimanual coordination.  相似文献

We attempted to map the representations of movements in 2 normal subjects by delivering five transcranial magnetic stimuli (TMS) with a focal coil to each of a grid of positions over the primary motor area (M1). Isometric forces were recorded from the contralateral index finger. Maps were made with the hand in a semiflexed "neutral" position, and with the thumb and index finger opposed in a "pincer" grip. The electromyogram (EMG) was monitored to ensure relaxation. The wrist was immobilized. In the neutral position, TMS at almost all positions produced abduction. Flexion was produced in the pincer position. Thus, while sensitive to changes in posture, TMS mapping may not be sensitive to the topographical organization of the M1 by movements as detected with direct cortical stimulation.  相似文献

Individual finger grip forces acting on a hand-held object were examined during shaking tasks with a five-finger precision grip. The subjects (n = 13) shook a force transducer-equipped grip object (mass = 400 g) in vertical, horizontal, and mediolateral directions at an average movement speed of 33 cm/s (moderate) and 66 cm/s (fast). In addition, grip forces were examined while the subjects (n = 10) held the object in front of the body and walked or ran in place. It was found that the grip forces for all the fingers changed temporally and spatially coupling with the acceleration of the object resulting from shaking. The results suggest that grip force control is accomplished in an active and anticipatory fashion. Regardless of the shaking direction and speed, among the four fingers the absolute grip force in the index finger was largest, followed by the middle, ring, and little finger forces. The index finger therefore plays a primary role in grip force control during shaking. The percent force contribution by each finger varied depending on the direction of shaking. Contributions of the ring and little fingers were larger when shaken in the horizontal and mediolateral directions than they were in the vertical direction. The results suggest that different finger co-ordination is required in relation to shaking direction. Changes in shaking speed from moderate to fast changed the grip forces for all the fingers. During walking and running, grip force control similar to that during active vertical shaking was required to hold the object safely in the hand.  相似文献

Sorghum and maize form the main dietary staple foods in Botswana. Other products such as peanuts, peanut butter, phane (an edible larval stage of an emperor moth Imbrasia belina Westwood), and pulses (cowpeas and beans) are also widely used as food and for the manufacture of feeds. These important food and feed commodities were analyzed for the presence of aflatoxins, fumonisin B1, and zearalenone. Aflatoxins were detected in 40% of the samples analyzed. The concentration of total aflatoxins ranged from 0.1 to 64 microg/kg. The mean concentration ranged from 0.3 microg/kg in sorghum to 23 microg/kg in peanut butter. Peanut butter samples were the most contaminated (71%). No aflatoxins were detected in maize. Fumonisin B1 was detected in 36% of the samples. Maize samples were the most contaminated (85% of the samples) with the concentration ranging from 20 to 1,270 microg/kg. No fumonisin B1 was detected in peanuts, phane, and beans. Zearalenone was only found in 2.6% of the samples analyzed at 40 microg/kg. Aflatoxins were the most common toxins detected in foods and feeds in Botswana. However, fumonisin B1 was more prevalent in maize than aflatoxins or zearalenone.  相似文献

Single neuronal activity was recorded from the supplementary motor area (SMA-proper and pre-SMA) and primary motor cortex (M1) in two Macaca fascicularis trained to perform a delayed conditional sequence of coordinated bimanual pull and grasp movements. The behavioural paradigm was designed to distinguish neuronal activity associated with bimanual coordination from that related to a comparable motor sequence but executed unimanually (left or right arm only). The bimanual and unimanual trials were instructed in a random order by a visual cue. Following the cue, there was a waiting period until presentation of a "go-signal", signalling the monkey to perform the instructed movement. A total of 143 task-related neurons were recorded from the SMA (SMA-proper, 62; pre-SMA, 81). Most SMA units (87%) were active in both unimanual contralateral and unimanual ipsilateral trials (bilateral neurons), whereas 9% of units were active only in unimanual contralateral trials and 3% were active only in unimanual ipsilateral trials. Forty-eight per cent of SMA task-related units were classified as bimanual, defined as neurons in which the activity observed in bimanual trials could not be predicted from that associated with unimanual trials when comparing the same events related to the same arm. For direct comparison, 527 neurons were recorded from M1 in the same monkeys performing the same tasks. The comparison showed that M1 contains significantly less bilateral neurons (75%) than the SMA, whereas the reverse was observed for contralateral neurons (22% in M1). The proportion of M1 bimanual cells (53%) was not statistically different from that observed in the SMA. The results suggest that both the SMA and M1 may contribute to the control of sequential bimanual coordinated movements. Interlimb coordination may then take place in a distributed network including at least the SMA and M1, but the contribution of other cortical and subcortical areas such as cingulate motor cortex and basal ganglia remains to be investigated.  相似文献

Humans exhibit a population-wide tendency toward right-handedness, and structural asymmetries of the primary motor cortex are associated with hand preference. Reported are similar asymmetries correlated with hand preference in a New World monkey (Cebus apella) that does not display population-level handedness. Asymmetry of central sulcus depth is significantly different between left-handed and right-handed individuals as determined by a coordinated bimanual task. Left-handed individuals have a deeper central sulcus in the contralateral hemisphere; right-handed individuals have a more symmetrical central sulcus depth.
