A computer code WTRLGD has been developed to describe the transient internal pressure of a waterlogged fuel rod during power burst and also to predict the possibility of the rod failure in the mode of cladding rupture. The code predicts transient thermal behavior of the fuel rod on the basis of an assumption of axisymmetry, and thermal-hydraulic transients of the internal water on the basis of a homogeneous volume-junction model modified so as to involve the cladding deformation. Calculated transients of the rod pressure are in fairly good agreement with those measured in the NSRR experiments, simulating the fuel rod behavior under an RIA condition. The comparison between calculation and experiment verifies that the code is an effective tool for the prediction of the failure of a waterlogged fuel rod.  相似文献

Fuel rod failure behavior has been studied under a reactivity initiated accident condition in Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR), JAERI. In the studies, inetallurgical observations showed that the incipient fuel rod failure mode was oxygen-induced embrittlement of the cladding independent of the test conditions such as fuel designs and cooling environments except for pressurized and waterlogged fuels. Development of the oxidation layers and embrittlement of β-Zry were quantitatively evaluated through the metallurgical examinations. A diffusion equation of oxygen was solved under a finite system with moving boundary conditions to obtain the oxygen concentration and evaluate the cladding embrittlement. The calculation showed that the wall thinning due to the cladding melt is needed for the complete embrittlement because the wall thinning enhances the oxygen concentration in the β-Zry, which well explain the experimental results. Therefore the failure threshold energy is determined by the cladding melting temperature. The failure threshold derived from this study is expected to be applicable to predicting the fuel rod failure behavior in computer analyses and also useful to evaluate the failure threshold energy for the new types of fuel rod.  相似文献

This paper describes the in-pile experimental results to study the influences of coolant flow on fuel behaviors under reactivity initiated accident (RIA) conditions performed in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR). A single PWR type test fuel rod was irradiated by a large neutron pulse in the NSRR to simulate a prompt power excursion of RIA's. The effects of coolant flow were studied at a coolant flow velocity of 0.3~1.8m/s and a coolant temperature of 20~90°C under the atmospheric pressure. It was found that the cooling conditions had considerable influences on fuel thermal behaviors under prompt heat-up. The increase of coolant flow velocity and subcooling enhanced heat transfer coefficient at cladding surface during film boiling, which resulted in large decrease of maximum cladding temperature and film boiling duration, and consequently in the increase of fuel failure threshold energy. The data tendencies are summarized and the influences of coolant flow are discussed with some computer analyses.  相似文献

Previously pressurized (pre-pressurized) fuel rod tests recently performed in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR) investigate the effects of initial internal pressure on fuel rod behavior during reactivity initiated accident (RIA) conditions. A single PWR type fuel rod was contained within a waterfilled, ambient temperature and ambient pressure capsule. The fuel rod was then heated by the pulsing operation of the NSRR.

Results from the tests show that the effect of pre-pressurization was significant for the fuel rods with initial internal pressure of 0.8 MPa and above, and fuel rod failure occurred from rupture of the cladding with lower threshold energy deposition for failure as the initial internal pressure was increased. The cladding rupture was governed mainly by the cladding temperature rise, not by the rod internal pressure rise during the transient. The relationships between cladding burst pressure and cladding burst temperature and between cladding strain and cladding temperature at cladding rupture obtained in the present study under an RIA condition agree with the results obtained from various in- and ex-reactor experiments under a LOCA condition, although the obtained time-averaged strain rate of the Zircaloy cladding was much greater than that in a LOCA condition.  相似文献

FARST, a computer code for the evaluation of fuel rod thermal and mechanical behavior under steady-state/transient conditions has been developed. The code characteristics are summarized as follows:
1. (i) FARST evaluates the fuel rod behavior under the transient conditions. The code analyzes thermal and mechanical phenomena within a fuel rod, taking into account the temperature change in coolant surrounding the fuel rod.
2. (ii) Permanent strains such as plastic, creep and swelling strains as well as thermoelastic deformations can be analyzed by using the strain increment method.
3. (iii) Axial force and contact pressure which act on the fuel stack and cladding are analyzed based on the stick/slip conditions.
4. (iv) FARST used a pellet swelling model which depends on the contact pressure between pellet and cladding, and an empirical pellet relocation model, designated as “jump relocation model”.
The code was successfully applied to analyses of the fuel rod irradiation data from pulse reactor for nuclear safety research in Cadarache (CABRI) and pulse reactor for nuclear safety research in Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (NSRR).The code was further applied to stress analysis of a 1000 MW class large FBR plant fuel rod during transient conditions. The steady-state model which was used so far gave the conservative results for cladding stress during overpower transient, but underestimated the results for cladding stress during a rapid temperature decrease of coolant.  相似文献

The RANNS code analyzes behavior of a single fuel rod in reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) conditions. The code has two types of mechanical model; one-dimensional deformation model for each axial segment length of rod, and newly-developed two-dimensional local deformation model for one pellet length. Analyses were performed on the RIA-simulated experiments in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR), OI-10 with high burnup PWR rods, and results of cladding deformation were compared between calculations by the two models and PIE data. The pre-accident, or End-of-Life conditions of the rod were predicted by the fuel performance code FEAMXI-6. In the calculations by the two-dimensional model of RANNS, the plastic strain increases at the cladding ridges during PCMI were compared with those in between the ridges and with the PIE data, and effect of stress variance induced by local non-uniformity of strain on the crack growth was discussed.  相似文献

A computer code RANNS was developed to analyze fuel rod behaviors in the reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) conditions. RANNS performs thermal and finite-element mechanical calculation for a single rod in axis-symmetric geometry, where fuel pellet consists of 36 equal-volume ring elements and cladding metallic wall consists of eight equal-thickness ring elements and one outer oxide element. The code can calculate temperature profile inside the rod, contact pressure generated by pellet–clad mechanical interaction (PCMI), stress–strain distribution and their interactions elaborately. An experimental analysis by RANNS begins with pre-test conditions of irradiated rod which are given by the fuel performance code FEMAXI-6.In the present study, analysis was performed on the simulated RIA experiments in the “nuclear safety research reactor” (NSRR), FK-10 and FK-12, with high burnup BWR rods in a cold-start up condition, and stress–strain evolution in the PCMI process was calculated extensively. In the analysis, the pellet–clad bonding was assumed both in the heat conduction and in mechanical restraint. The calculated hoop strain increase was compared with the measured strain gauge data, and satisfactory agreement was obtained. Simulation calculations with broader power pulses anticipated in RIA of commercial BWR were carried out and the resulted cladding hoop stress was compared with the failure stress estimated by comparison of analysis with experimental data.  相似文献

Behavior of irradiated fuel rods under power burst conditions by accidental reactivity insertion in light water reactors (LWRs) has been studied in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR). In the experiments, cladding hoop deformation, which reached up to about 10%, was much larger than that of the fresh rods. The current LWR fuel behavior analysis codes, which only take account of the thermal expansion of the fuel pellets for the deformation calculation, under-predicted the plastic deformation of the cladding to be less than about 1%. Fission gas release during the pulse irradiation tests reached as high as 22% in the NSRR irradiated fuel tests. In order to describe these test results, a model of grain boundary fission gases to cause the cladding deformation has been developed and installed in a fuel behavior simulation code, FRAP-T6. In the model, the over-pressurized gases by the pulse irradiation cause grain boundary separation and stress the cladding during the tests. The model assumes that the gases remain in the fuel during the early part of pulse irradiation and are released to the open volume in the rod after the cladding deformation. The model, in combination with a fuel thermal expansion model, GAPCON, which was validated through fresh fuel tests, reproduces the NSRR test results reasonably well.  相似文献

For RIA-simulated experiments in the NSRR with high-burnup PWR fuel and BWR fuel, numerical analyses were performed to evaluate the temporal changes of profiles of temperature and thermal stress in pellet induced by pulse power, using the RANNS code. The pre-pulse states of rods were calculated using the fuel performance code FEMAXI-6 along the irradiation histories in commercial reactors and the results were fed to the RANNS analysis as initial conditions of the rod. One-dimensional FEM was applied to the mechanical analysis of the fuel rod, and the calculated cladding permanent strain was compared with the measured value to confirm the validity of the PCMI calculation. The calculated changes in the profiles of temperature and stress in the pellet during an early transient phase were compared with the measured data such as the internal gas pressure rise, cracks and grain structure in the post-test pellet, anddiscussed in terms of PCMI and grain separation. The analyses indicate that the pellet cracking appearances coincided with the calculated tensile stress state and that the compressive thermal stress suppresses the fission gas bubble expansion leading to grain separation.  相似文献

Fuel rod behavior under Reactivity Initiated Accident (RIA) conditions has been studied in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR), JAERI. In the experiments, cladding thermal behavior was observed to be influenced by the fuel pellet eccentricity to produce large azimuthal temperature variation in the cladding. The maximum azimuthal cladding temperature difference was measured to be as large as 150°C by thermocouples attached to opposite sides of the cladding around the circumference, though the thermocouples did not always detect the maximum temperature difference around the circumference. The actual temperature differences in the fuel rods subjected to less than 290 cal/g?UO2 were estimated to be 350°C at maximum based on metallographies. A simple calculation considering gap conductance variations also showed that the maximum temperature difference became 350°C under fully eccentrical condition in the fuel rod subjected to 260 cal/g?UO2. Moreover, as the rod damage such as cladding deformation, melting and failure occurs unevenly around the circumference due to the fuel pellet eccentricity in general, the fuel pellet eccentricity should influence the fuel rod failure under RIA conditions.  相似文献

Gap heat transfer characteristics and their effects on LWR fuel behavior during an RIA have been studied through the in-pile experiment with UO2 pellet fuel rods. The report describes the experimental results obtained in the NSRR tests in which PWR type test fuel rods of helium and xenon filled as the gap gas have been irradiated in the pulse reactor, NSRR, to simulate the prompt heat up of RIAs. The relation between the cladding temperature history and the gap heat transfer conditions, and the effects of gap gas composition on fuel behavior and on the fuel failure threshold are discussed based on the in-pile experimental data.  相似文献

The possible causes of the destruction of the Chernobyl reactor core were examined by making use of the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR) experimental results concerning the destructive forces generated by a fuel failure. A complementary experiment with Chernobyl reactor conditions was performed in order to observe the fuel failure behavior and the resultant vessel pressure rise, etc. Also, generation of hydrogen from the fuel rod cladding and the consequent system pressure rise were estimated based on the experiments. These examinations led to the conclusion that the most probable cause of the core pressure tube rupture in the accident was a static pressure rise due to rapid energy release from fragmented fuel. Other phenomena such as the hydrogen generation and molten fuel contact to the tube wall might have contributed to the tube rupture. The water hammer force is also estimated to have been large enough to break tubes even using conservative assumptions.  相似文献

Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has conducted irradiation experiments utilizing extensive fuel instrumentations at HBWR in Norway since 1967. The major effort has been given to the study of pellet cladding interaction. A special emphasis was placed on the studies of inpile fuel rod deformation including cladding diameter measurements. The experimental conditions cover steady state irradiation, power ramping and power cycling. The data obtained from the experiments were used for development and verification of the computer code FEMAXI. The present paper reviews and summarizes the major results of the experiments.  相似文献

Nuclear fuel rods which comprises an important component of a nuclear power plant are composed of nuclear fuel and cladding. Simulating the nuclear fuel rod using a computer program is the universal method to verify its safety. The computer program used for this is called the fuel performance code. The main objective of this study is to simulate the nuclear fuel rod behavior considering the gap conductance using three-dimensional gap elements. Gap elements are used because, unlike other methods, this approach does not require special methods or other variables such as the Lagrange multiplier. In this work, a nuclear fuel rod has been simulated and the results are compared with the experimental results.  相似文献

Investigations of fuel behavior are carried out in close connection with experimental research, operation feedback and computational analyses. OECD NEA sets up the “International Fuel Performance Experiments (IFPE) database”, a public domain database on nuclear fuel performance experiments with the purpose of model development and code validation. The objective of the activity (performed in the framework of the IAEA CRP FUMEX-III project) is to investigate the pellet-clad interaction mechanism and the capability of TRANSURANUS code in simulating the phenomena, processes occurring in the fuel rod during the power ramps, with focus on the parameters influencing the cladding failures. The experimental database adopted is the Studsvik PWR Super-Ramp subprogram, part of the IFPE database, which consists of 28 pressurized water reactor fuel rods power ramped at burnup from 28 to 45 MWd/kgU. Relevant results by TRANSURANUS are presented in connection with the experimental evidences. Focus is given on the PCI/SCC failure, demonstrating that the failure threshold, available in TRANSURANUS, results conservative both in case of KWU and W rods.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the development of a new detailed multi-dimensional multi-field computer code SABENA and its application to an out-of-pile low-heat-flux sodium boiling test in a 37-pin bundle. The semi-implicit numerical method employed in the two-fluid six-equation two-phase flow model has proved in solving a wide spectrum of sodium boiling transients in a rod bundle under low pressure conditions. The code is capable of predicting the spatial incoherency of the boiling, dryout on fuel cladding surfaces and fuel pin heat transfer. Essential to the successful application of such a mechanistic model computer code are validational efforts aimed at the LMFBR accident phenomenology analyses. Through the simulation of the natural circulation boiling conditions, this study provides a consistent analytical interpretation of the experimental data. The important influences of such parameters as the inlet flow restriction and bundle geometry have been examined through interpretations of two-phase flow analysis including considerations of the flow instability induced dryout mechanism.  相似文献

A state of the art study of transient failure of zircaloy reveals that a wide range of failure models exist, and their use in fuel analysis depends upon the type of application. Licensing analyses, for example, employ highly simplified criteria that depict cladding rupture in terms of a single response variable, usually the nominal circumferential stress, as function of temperature; while fuel behavior analyses use more detailed models with varying levels of sophistication. Some of these models, however, are ill-suited for detailed fuel rod analysis computer codes because of their dependence on case-specific parameters; others are limited in their utility because of inherent deficiencies in their theoretical treatment of the phenomena involved. Based on this study, a new zircaloy transient failure model is developed that takes account of the important variables involved in transient phenomena, namely, heating rate, strain rate, temperature, true stress, true strain, and prior condition of the cladding material. The model is particularly suited for detailed fuel rod analysis and thus was implemented in the FREY code.  相似文献

ASTEC and ICARE/CATHARE computer codes, developed by IRSN (France) (the former with GRS, Germany), are used in RRC KI (Russia) for the analyses of accident transients on VVER-type NPPs. The latest versions of the codes were continuously improved and validated to provide a better understanding of the main processes during hypothetical severe accidents on VVERs.This paper describes modelling improvements for VVERs carried out recently in the ICARE common part of the above codes. These actions concern the important models of fuel rod cladding mechanical behaviour and oxidation in steam at high and very high temperatures. The existing models were improved basing on the experience in the field and latest literature data sources for Zr + 1%Nb material used for manufacture of VVERs fuel rod claddings.Best-fitted correlations for the Zr alloy oxidation through a broad temperature range were established, along with recommendations on model application in clad geometry and starvation conditions. A model for the creep velocity was chosen for the clad mechanical model and some cladding burst criteria were established as a function of temperature. After verification of modelling improvements on Separate Effect Tests, validation was carried out on integral bundle tests such as QUENCH, CODEX-CT, PARAMETER-SF (the application to the CORA-VVER experiments is not described in the present paper) and on the Paks-2 cleaning tank incident. The comparison of updated code results with experimental data demonstrated very good numerical predictions, which increases the level of code applicability to VVER-type materials.  相似文献
