This article explores the changing nature of the interaction between computer science and the natural and social sciences.After briefly tracing the history of scientific computation,the article presents the concept of computational lens,a metaphor for a new relationship that is emerging between the world of computation and the world of the sciences.Our main thesis is that,in many scientific fields,the processes being studied can be viewed as computational in nature,in the sense that the processes perform dynamic transformations on information represented as digital data.Viewing natural or engineered systems through the lens of their computational requirements or capabilities provides new insights and ways of thinking.A number of examples are discussed in support of this thesis.The examples are from various fields,including quantum computing,statistical physics,the World Wide Web and the Internet,mathematics,and computational molecular biology.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a novel method for the automatic computation and digital fabrication of artistic string images. String art is a technique used by artists for the creation of abstracted images which are composed of straight lines of strings tensioned between pins distributed on a frame. Together the strings fuse to a perceptible image. Traditionally, artists craft such images manually in a highly sophisticated and tedious design process. To achieve this goal fully automatically we propose a computational setup driven by a discrete optimization algorithm which takes an ordinary picture as input and converts it into a connected graph of strings that tries to reassemble the input image best possibly. Furthermore, we propose a hardware setup for automatic digital fabrication of these images using an industrial robot that spans the strings. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach by generating and fabricating a set of real string art images.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) plays an essential role to analyze fluid flows and heat transfer situations by using numerical methods. Turbomachines involve internal and external fluid flow problems in compressors and turbines. CFD at present is one of the most important tools to design and analyze all types of turbomachinery. The main purpose of this paper is to review the state of the art work carried out in the field of turbomachinery using CFD. Literature review of research work pertaining to CFD analysis in turbines, compressors and centrifugal pumps are described. Various issues of CFD codes used in turbomachinery and its parallelization strategy adopted are highlighted. Furthermore, the prevailing merits and demerits of CFD in turbomachinery are provided. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is one of the most emerging fields of fluid mechanics used to analyze fluid flow situation. This analysis is based on simulations carried out on computing machines. For complex configurations, the grid points are so large that the computational time required to obtain the results are very high. Parallel computing is adopted to reduce the computational time of CFD by utilizing the available resource of computing. Parallel computing tools like OpenMP, MPI, CUDA, combination of these and few others are used to achieve parallelization of CFD software. This article provides a comprehensive state of the art review of important CFD areas and parallelization strategies for the related software. Issues related to the computational time complexities and parallelization of CFD software are highlighted. Benefits and issues of using various parallel computing tools for parallelization of CFD software are briefed. Open areas of CFD where parallelization is not much attempted are identified and parallel computing tools which can be useful for parallelization of CFD software are spotlighted. Few suggestions for future work in parallel computing of CFD software are also provided.  相似文献

在《计算机导论》课程教学过程中注重培养学生的计算创造性思维,对促进学生的专业认同感、提高学习兴趣具有重要作用。本文把计算创造性思维纳入到计算机导论课程教学过程中,从调整教学内容、改革教学方法和改进考核方式等方面对基于计算创造性思维能力培养的课程教学模式进行了探索性研究和实践。通过对采用课程教学改革的控制组和对照组的对比分析发现,基于计算创造性思维能力培养的课程教学模式教学效果显著,为计算机专业课程教学改革提供了有益参考。  相似文献
