Reviews recent concerns over entry-level training and title standards in school psychology from historical and contemporary perspectives. Differences between the American Psychological Association and the National Association of School Psychologists are described in the context of variables influencing regulation and evaluation of the field. Although short-term resolution of the current professional differences appears impossible, these associations must take the lead in selecting mutually desirable goals and coordinate efforts toward achieving them. Recent joint efforts of these groups suggest the probability of constructive movement on matters of mutual concern, including professional autonomy and comprehensive service delivery. Five studies were conducted to investigate the relationship between how people communicate about social events and how representations of these events are stored in memory. It was hypothesized that more distant events in memory would be described with more abstract linguistic predicates, and recent events with more concrete language. The 1st study supported this hypothesis. The 2nd and 3rd experiments demonstrated that abstract predicates used as prompts elicit memories that are significantly more removed in time than concrete predicates. Two final experiments showed that these outcomes are not merely a function of the type of semantic cue but an interaction between memory and preferential predicate use. The findings illustrate a link between memory and communicative behavior of a type that has not been previously studied. The results are discussed in terms of a recent, well-supported model of 2 separate fast-learning and slow-learning memory systems. Recent developments in the courts have indicated an increased vulnerability of the tobacco industry to civil lawsuits brought because of tobacco-related illness. Much of the recent public discussion has dealt with how to attack the public health problem of childhood smoking, and the judicial system may also be of help in this effort. A program for 30 additional medical students for the first two years of the University of Wisconsin Medical School curriculum has been developed, and two groups of students have advanced to the clinical years. Design included providing modules of course materials to students and utilizing faculty predominantly in the developmental and managerial role. Preliminary results are based on student and faculty opinion of the program in categories of faculty acceptance, faculty-student interaction, certifying examinations, student attitudes, material developed, and course objectives. The course has been accepted as a continuing part of the medical school curriculum and provides a more flexible track for some students. There has been no significant difference in performance on Part I of the examination of the National Board of Medical Examiners for the first two groups. The concepts of individualized medical education have strengthened the basic science and core curriculum of the medical school.  相似文献

Extensive historical documentation of exposures and releases at government-owned energy facilities is a unique and valuable resource for analyzing and communicating health risks. Facilities at all stages of the atomic fuel cycle were the subject of numerous industrial hygiene, occupational health, and environmental assessments during the Cold War period. Uranium mines and mills on the Colorado Plateau were investigated as early as the 1940s. One such facility was the mill in Monticello, Utah, which began operation as a vanadium extraction plant in 1943 and was later adapted to recover uranium from carnotite ores. The mill ceased operation in 1960. The site was added to the federal Superfund list in 1986. ATSDR held public availability sessions in 1993 as part of its public health assessment process, at which several former mill workers voiced health concerns. An extensive literature search yielded several industrial hygiene evaluations of the Monticello mill and health studies that included Monticello workers, only two of which had been published in the peer-reviewed literature. In combination with the broader scientific literature, these historical reports provide a partial basis for responding to mill workers' contemporary health concerns. The strengths and limitations of the available exposure data for analytical epidemiologic studies and dose reconstruction are discussed. As an interim measure, the available historical documentation may be especially helpful in communicating about health risks with workers and communities in ways that acknowledge the historical context of their experience.  相似文献

The shortage of school psychologists entering academic careers has been an issue since the time of the Thayer Conference in 1954 and has become increasingly salient in recent years. The Medical Sciences School of the University of Santiago de Chile, is an institution inserted in the occidental culture and therefore on its conceptions and traditions. It subscribes the Principles defined in the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights of the United Nations and especially the importance of the human person, as an entity irrepetible, different to others. The human rights are over the institutions, the society and the laws of science. The Faculty considers the family as the cell or natural and fundamental element for the development of the human being in the society. It defines its historic mission as the search of the truth and the achievement of a society in pro of the welfare and health of the people in a frame of excellence, justice, humanism, efficiency and participation. As an expression of the cultural patrimony it should create and transfer knowledge. As guarantor of the ethical principles it should protect the dignity that emanates from the transcendent nature of the person and its moral principles and therefore its right to life, justice, freedom, equality, health, education, and happiness. As a paradigm of progress it must be involved in modernization and should impulse the development. As an entity committed with Society it should participate in the search of solutions for politics and programs looking for a higher level of life and a better model of health. The profile of our graduated students will identify them due to their profound spirit of welfare of the person, his family, his community, ethical sense, solidarity, justness and humanity, their orientation to the community and the environment with a solid professional formation in the strategy of Primary Health Care. They will provide education in health for the whole family in order to improve a better way of life. They will be trained to detect and solve the risks of individual, communities and environment. Research is also a priority of the Faculty in order to contribute to solve the problems of health of the Nation, since there is no development without education and there is no education neither development without health. For the Faculty the achievement of these purposes is mandatory and we will make them reality through the Prometeo Project 1997-2001.  相似文献

Reviews concerns about current assessment procedures in school psychology. The most important suggested change in assessment is the outcomes criterion, which is proposed as a solution to the dilemma of eliminating bias. Other changes that are likely to result from the outcomes criterion are trends involving reforms in the classification system, reduced level of inference, closer link between assessment and intervention, and increased use of behavioral approaches.
