The National Applied Mathematics Laboratories-A Prospectus

A prospectus is herein set forth for a federal center of applied mathematics, to be operated as a division of the National Bureau of Standards of the Department of Commerce. The center is to be known as the National Applied Mathematics Laboratories. It will specialize in numerical and statistical analysis, and will undertake to offer various services in these fields, and carry on a broad program of research and training. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of high-speed automatic computing machinery and the mathematical theory needed for its effective use. (1947)     

Mathematics, Computer Development, and Science Policy Debates after World War II

This study focuses on the work of three mathematicians who collaborated on post–World War II projects. Specifically, the article examines connections between science policy debates and how practices of early computer developers were affected. Debate topics included ownership of technologies developed in private industry and at universities with public funding. Computer developers found solutions to the issues debated, ultimately forming the Association for Computing Machinery.

The Future of Computer Science

Computer science is undergoing a fundamental change and is reshaping our understanding of the world. An important aspect of this change is the theory and applications dealing with the gathering and analyzing of large real-world data sets. In this paper, we introduce four research projects in which processing and interpreting large data sets is a central focus. Innovative ways of analyzing such data sets allow us to extract useful information that we would never have obtained from small or synthetic data sets, thus providing us with new insights into the real world.

The guidelines for developing the CSE model curricula presented in the first paper of this issue were (1) to span the entire spectrum of computer science and engineering and provide the opportunity for in-depth study or specailization in any area of the field; (2) to bridge the traditional gap between hardware and software by emphasizing the interrelationship, common concepts, and inseparability of these two aspects of the field; and (3) to provide a blueprint for specific implementations.
