Biodegradable Materials for Bone Repairs:A Review

With attractive research and development of biomaterials,more and more opportunities have been brought to the treatments of human tissue repairs.The implant is usually no need to exist in the body accompanied with the recovery or regeneration of the tissue lesions,and the long-term effect of exotic substance to human body should be reduced as lower as possible.For this purpose,biodegradable materials,including polymers, magnesium alloys and ceramics,have attracted much attention for medical applications due to their biodegradable characters in body environment.This paper in turn introduces these three different types of widely studied biodegradable materials as well as their advantages as implants in applications for bone repairs.Relevant history and research progresses are summarized.     

Analysis of Top Chinese Contractors’ Developmental Tracks and Evaluation of Their Strategic Selection of International Construction Markets

The past decade has witnessed a rapid development of the international construction market. This research aims to investigate top Chinese contractors’ developmental tracks and evaluate their strategic selection of international construction markets over the period from 2001 to 2006, based on the modified Boston Consulting Group Matrix (BCG). Results indicate that Asia and Africa, currently “question marks” markets for top Chinese contractors (abbreviated as TCCs), have the most potential to become “stars” markets; other question marks markets such as the Middle East and Europe are found not to be of potential; “dogs” markets such as the U.S., Canada and Latin America should be relinquished progressively unless there is renewed growth opportunity over the next two years. Compared to developmental tracks of top contractors from some advanced countries, TCCs’ investment and development strategy in Africa seems to be sustainable and intensive; TCCs’ exit strategy for the Middle East appears determined and swift, while their strategy in Asia seems to be lacking in persistence. This research sheds important lights and insights into the prevailing process of internationalization of TCCs and provides a strategic direction for their selection of international construction market. What is more, this research is also valuable to other Chinese contractors who are seeking the opportunity to enter the international construction markets.

Spontaneous Growth of Metal Whiskers on Surfaces of Solids:A Review

Spontaneous metal whisker growth phenomenon has been studied for~70 years,but still resists interpretations,which has haunted the electronics-rich systems from the birth of the industry since whiskers may lead to short circuits and hence other disasters.In addition to reliability problems,threat of Pb whiskers to human health is also significant due to the toxicity of the element and its geometry as well as its nanometer size.This issue becomes more attention drawing and urgent due to the restrictions on Pb use in EU,Japan etc.,which phases out the Pb-addition practice to mitigate Sn whiskers.This paper reviews the origin of the whiskering phenomenon and whisker-induced problems,ranging from early in the World War Ⅱ to the present;details the development of this issue in the electronics-rich systems including the phenomenon,problems and remedies;pictures the long history of the developments of the growth mechanisms and models which are full of hardship and contradictions.New aspects on the spontaneous whisker growth in some different substrates,such as in brasses and MAX phase materials are reviewed in more details.The latter was found to be a promising system to understand the whisker growth phenomenon,with new growth models proposed that may shed new light to the intricate battle field of the metal whisker research in general.

FOOD SAFETY CONTROL SYSTEM IN CHINA

Most countries have expended much effort to develop food safety control systems to ensure safe food supplies within their borders. China, as one of the world's largest food producers and consumers, pays a lot of attention to food safety issues. In recent years, China has taken actions and implemented a series of plans in respect to food safety. Food safety control systems including regulatory, supervisory, and science and technology systems, have begun to be established in China. Using, as a base, an analysis of the current Chinese food safety control system as measured against international standards, this paper discusses the need for China to standardize its food safety control system. We then suggest some policies and measures to improve the Chinese food safety control system.     

Tea stain-inspired solar energy harvesting polyphenolic nanocoatings with tunable absorption spectra

Discovery and development of new sustainable photothermal materials with tunable light absorption spectra play a key role in solar energy harvesting and conversion.One possible solution to this quest is to check nature as a source of matters or inspiration.Inspired by the formation of tea stains,a unique class of dark stain materials generated by the interfacial reaction between tea polyphenols and metal substance,we reported the facile preparation and screening of a series of photothermal nanocoating layers via the metal ion(i.e.C u(ll)>Fe(lll),Ni(ll),Zn(ll))promoted in situ polymerization of typical phenolic moieties of tea polyphenols(i.e.,catechol and pyrogallol).It was found that those resulting metal-polyphenolic nanocoatings showed various promising features,such as high blackness and strong adhesion,excellent and tunable light absorption properties,good hydrophilicity and long-term stability.We further fabricated the photothermal composite devices by/n s/'fty formation of meta卜polyphenolic nanocoatings on pristine silks for solar desalination,which demonstrated promising durable evaporation behaviors with excellent evaporation rates and steam generation efficiencies.We believe that this work could provide more opportunities towards new types of bio-inspired and sustainable photothermal nanomaterials for solar energy harvesting applications such as water desalination.

Standardization Promotes Enterprises' Independent Innovation and International Competitiveness

Erdos Group, a large-scale enterprise group with more than 20,000 employees, was developed and expanded from Yih Ju League Cashmere Factory set up and put into production in 1981.
