Premo: an emerging standard for multimedia presentation. I.Overview and framework

Developers needing to realize high-level multimedia applications are essentially left on their own. Only a few programming tools allow the creation of multimedia effects based on a more general model than multimedia documents. No currently available ISO standard encompasses these needs. A standard in this area should focus more on the presentation aspects of multimedia and less on the coding, transfer, or hypermedia document aspects, which are covered other standards. It should also concentrate on programming tools rather than multimedia document format. These are exactly the main concerns of the Premo (Presentation Environment for Multimedia Objects) standard, the subject of the article. Premo's major features can be briefly summarized as follows: Premo is a presentation environment that aims to provide a standard programming environment in a very general sense, one that helps promote portable multimedia applications; Premo targets multimedia presentation, whereas earlier SC24 standards concentrated either on synthetic graphics or image-processing systems; Premo is object oriented. This means that, through standard object-oriented techniques, a Premo implementation becomes extensible and configurable. Object-oriented technology also provides a framework to describe distribution in a consistent manner

A multimedia enhanced distributed object event service

We describe enhancements for the standard CORBA Event Service, extending support for multimedia data flows, quality-of-service definition, a capability-based security mechanism, and multicast event delivery. The resulting service specification is flexible, efficient, and widely applicable. It provides a useful framework for integrating multimedia content with a standard event-based messaging service.     

MHEGAM-a multimedia messaging system

MHEGAM (MHEC-1 Advanced Mail) is a complete multimedia messaging system for the creation, exchange, and restitution of multimedia messages that express spatial and temporal synchronization among their components. MHEGAM can be based on the standard messaging systems X.420 or MIME. We present the multimedia extensions MHECAM-X.420 and MHEGAM-MIME and discuss the multimedia message format and architecture components for both systems     

MHEC-5-aims, concepts, and implementation issues

The ISO MHEG-5 standard owes its existence to the increasing convergence of broadcast and interactive technologies. It specifies an encoding format for multimedia applications independently of service paradigms and network protocols. The article introduces the MHEG-5 standard, describes examples of functionality, and illustrates an implementation that covers both runtime presentation and multimedia authoring applications     

Continuity and synchronization in MPEG

The requirement of continuous retrieval, and the presence of multiple media streams whose display must proceed in a mutually synchronized manner are the distinguishing features that are unique to digital multimedia. In the emerging international multimedia encoding standard MPEG, continuity and synchronization are handled at different layers of the multimedia stream. The authors discuss how they are specified and propose techniques for their implementation within a distributed multimedia environment
