This work presents quality control results on the mercury concentrations in different environmental (river sediments, forest soils, river suspended matter and fish) and human samples from the lower Madeira River, Amazon sampled between 2001 and 2003, about 15-20 years after the nearly cessation of gold mining activities in the region, which reached its peak in the late 1980s. The study aimed to compare mercury concentrations in these environmental samples with those reported by other authors during the gold rush of the Madeira River Basin. Today, in the Madeira River the releases of mercury register a sudden reduction due the gold price fall in the international trade. However, about 100 t of Hg were released to the atmosphere and to aquatic systems in the region during the gold rush. The present survey shows that notwithstanding the reduction of Hg emissions to the Madeira River Basin from gold mining proper, concentrations in fish and humans are similar to those measured during the gold rush. Reduction in Hg concentrations is restricted to areas close to old point sources and only for abiotic compartments (air and sediments). Remobilization of Hg from bottom sediments plus re-emission from soils due to land use changes are probably responsible for keeping high Hg concentrations in biological samples.  相似文献

This study was designed to assess possible associations between biomarkers of mercury (Hg) exposure and oxidative stress in fish-eating Amazonian communities. Clinical samples were obtained from riparians living in the Brazilian Amazon. Biomarkers of oxidative stress (glutathione - GSH, glutathione peroxidase - GSH-Px, catalase - CAT, activity and reactivation index of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase - ALA-D (R%) were determined in blood. Total Hg was measured in whole blood (B-Hg), plasma (P-Hg) and hair (H-Hg). Association between biomarkers of Hg exposure and oxidative stress were examined using multiple regression models, including age, gender, alcohol consumption, smoking status, fish consumption and then stratified for gender. Significant inverse relations were observed between GSH-Px, GSH, CAT, ALA-D activity and B-Hg or H-Hg (p < 0.05). ALA-D reactivation index was positively related to B-Hg (p < 0.0001). P-Hg was directly related to ALA-D reactivation index and inversely associated with GSH-Px, GSH, and ALA-D activity (p < 0.05). When stratified for gender, women showed significant inverse associations between all biomarkers of Hg exposure and CAT (p < 0.05) or GSH (p < 0.05), while for men only P-Hg showed a significant inverse relation with GSH (p < 0.001). Our results clearly demonstrated an association between Hg exposure and oxidative stress. Moreover, for B-Hg, P-Hg and H-Hg gender differences were present.  相似文献

Great rivers of the central United States (Upper Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio rivers) are valuable economic and cultural resources, yet until recently their ecological condition has not been well quantified. In 2004-2005, as part of the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program for Great River Ecosystems (EMAP-GRE), we measured legacy organochlorines (OCs) (pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs) and emerging compounds (polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs) in whole fish to estimate human and wildlife exposure risks from fish consumption. PCBs, PBDEs, chlordane, dieldrin and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) were detected in most samples across all rivers, and hexachlorobenzene was detected in most Ohio River samples. Concentrations were highest in the Ohio River, followed by the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, respectively. Dieldrin and PCBs posed the greatest risk to humans. Their concentrations exceeded human screening values for cancer risk in 27-54% and 16-98% of river km, respectively. Chlordane exceeded wildlife risk values for kingfisher in 11-96% of river km. PBDE concentrations were highest in large fish in the Missouri and Ohio Rivers (mean > 1000 ng g− 1 lipid), with congener 47 most prevalent. OC and PBDE concentrations were positively related to fish size, lipid content, trophic guild, and proximity to urban areas. Contamination of fishes by OCs is widespread among great rivers, although exposure risks appear to be more localized and limited in scope. As an indicator of ecological condition, fish tissue contamination contributes to the overall assessment of great river ecosystems in the U.S.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Mercury is a global pollutant that affects neurodevelopment of children. OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to measure and evaluate mercury concentration of children and mothers, and its association with exposure. METHODS: A cross-sectional assessment was done using questionnaires and hair mercury were analysed by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry in the National Institute for Minamata Disease in Japan. RESULTS: A total of 112 children and 111 mothers were included; mean age was 34 months and 32 years, respectively. 17.9% of children and 34.2% of mothers had concentrations greater than 1 parts per million (ppm) as reference level. Body weight at birth, feeding methods, maternal age, and maternal education level were significantly different in each group (p<.05). Mean maternal hair mercury level (0.91 ppm) was higher than children (0.74 ppm), and has a positive correlation between them (p<.05). 68.1% of children, 75% of pregnant period, 63.4% of lactating period, and 78.6% of last six months have been consuming fish. With multiple regression analysis, hair mercury levels in children aged less than 6 months had a linear relationship with body weight at birth, gestational weeks, feeding methods (breast- or bottle- feeding) and maternal educational level. While children aged over 6 months significantly differed with gender, frequency of fish servings per week, and frequency of maternal fish consumption in lactation period. And hair mercury levels had inverse linear relationship with maternal monthly income in this age group. Maternal mercury levels had linear relationship with maternal age. CONCLUSION: Mercury levels in children may be affected by their mothers due to similar dietary patterns. Further long-term large-scale and follow-up studies are needed.  相似文献

In this study we aimed to estimate the level of mercury in women's hair and its association with fish consumption and amalgam fillings in an Iranian southern port town (named Mahshahr). A total number of 195 hair samples were collected randomly from women aged 25-45 years free from occupational exposures to mercury. Additional information about these women's age, weight, height, number of pregnancies, level of education, number of amalgam fillings and fish consumption were also gathered. The determination of Hg level in hair samples was carried out by the LECO, AMA 254, Advanced Mercury Analyzer, according to ASTM standard No. D-6722. The average mercury level in these women's hair was 2.95 ± 2.33 µg/g (ranged from 0.07 to 24.46 µg/g). In the next stage, the study participants were divided into four groups with respect to their fish consumption and number of amalgam fillings; A) < 3 amalgam fillings, < 3 times fish consumption per month, B) < 3 amalgam fillings, > 7 times fish consumption per month, C) > 6 amalgam fillings, < 3 times fish consumption per month, and D) > 6 amalgam fillings, > 7 times fish consumption per month. Statistical analysis showed that the Hg level was significantly different in these four groups (P < 0.001). Mercury levels in this sample exceeded the USEPA-recommended 1 μg/g in 76.4% of the studied population. Finally, the multiple linear regression results revealed that frequency of fish consumption and amalgam restorations are the most important routes of Hg exposure. However, the main determinant of Hg exposure was the intake of Hg through fish consumption.  相似文献

A monitoring study of 147 compounds in surface river waters from northeastern Greece near Greek/Bulgarian/Turkish borders was carried out during 1999-2007. Based on agricultural use eight sampling points along the rivers Ardas, Evros and Erythropotamos were set up, covering the distance from the Greek/Bulgarian borders down to the river's discharge (river's delta) in the Greek territory. In total, 88 sampling events were carried out from 1999 to 2007. Pesticides were extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-EI-MS) using a multiresidue in-house analytical method including pesticides belonging to different chemical classes. Aquatic risk concerning the detected pesticides was assessed on the basis of the risk quotient (RQ = PEC/PNEC). From the 28 compounds (pesticides, metabolites and caffeine) that were detected in surface waters of northeastern Greece the soil applied pesticides were the most frequently detected. High pesticide concentrations were detected within 2 months of their application. Extreme pesticide concentrations were detected in the beginning of the irrigation season or just after high rainfall events. Generally, low levels of pesticide residues were found in the first sampling point (Greek/Bulgarian borders) of all rivers, however o′,p′ DDT, o′,p′ DDE and γ-HCH were mainly detected in this sampling point regarded as cross-boundary contamination. The most commonly encountered compounds in the river waters were atrazine, DEA, alachlor, trifluralin, prometryne, molinate, carbofuran, carbaryl and diazinon. Increased loading (primary as well as secondary peaks) seemed to be a consequence of application (timing, rate, frequency) and intense rainfall during the application period. Aquatic risk assessment revealed that from the 28 compounds that were constantly detected 12 showed non-acceptable risk when median concentrations were used as PEC and 18 when extreme concentrations were used as PEC values.  相似文献

The first measurements on the daily trend of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) concentration determined in coastal and offshore waters of the Mediterranean basin are reported. Marked daily behaviour tracking solar radiation has been observed at the coastal sampling station with DGM values ranging from 11.0 to 38.9 pg/l. Contrary to these observations the DGM values in offshore water samples (11.9-20.0 pg/l) were independent of the sampling time, thus identifying the absence of higher levels during the hours of maximum insolation. The availability of Hg2+ substrate necessary for the photo-reaction processes of DGM formation has been evaluated by measuring the reactive mercury concentration. In offshore waters the lower DGM concentrations are attributable to the substrate as a limiting factor. The highest concentration of DOC measured in coastal seawater with respect to the offshore one could moreover enhance the reaction rates of DGM production through the formation of inorganic mercury complexes and weaker organic associations.  相似文献

We analyzed the past and future trends in river export of dissolved and particulate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and carbon (C) to the coastal waters of China, for sixteen rivers, as calculated by the Global NEWS models (Nutrient Export from WaterSheds). Between 1970 and 2000, the dissolved N and P export increased significantly, while export of other nutrients changed less. We analyzed the future trends (2000-2050) for the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) scenarios. In general, the largest increases of dissolved nutrients export are projected for the Global Orchestration scenario, assuming a globalized world and a reactive approach toward environmental management. Future trends in river export of nutrients vary largely among basins, nutrient forms and scenarios. We calculate both increasing and decreasing trends between 2000 and 2050. We also identify the sources contributing to the nutrient export. For selected river basins we present results for alternative scenarios, which are based on the Global Orchestration scenario, but assume more environmental management. This illustrates how the NEWS models can be useful in regional analyses for decision making.  相似文献

Soil erosion and degradation provoked by deforestation in the Amazon is a global concern, and recent studies propose a link between deforestation, soil erosion and the leaching of naturally occurring mercury (Hg). In the Ecuadorian Amazon, elevated deforestation rates and the proximity of volcanoes could play an important role in soil fertility and soil Hg levels. The goal of this study is to evaluate the impacts of deforestation on Andisol and Inceptisol fertility and Hg levels in the Napo River Valley, Ecuador. Results show a significant decrease in surface soil organic matter (-15% to -70% of C and N) and exchangeable cations (-25% to -60%) in deforested plots. Hg concentrations at the surface (0-5 cm), higher in Andisols (225 ng/g average) than in Inceptisols (95 ng/g average), show a decrease of up to 60% following deforestation. Soil erosion exposes the mineral horizon, a layer with a higher Hg burden, to the elements thus provoking and accelerating Hg leaching. These results suggest that deforestation and the associated Hg leaching could contribute to the fish Hg contamination measured in the Napo River watershed.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) concentration, reservoir mass, and Hg reservoir size were determined for vegetation components, litter, and mineral soil for two Sierran forest sites and one desert sagebrush steppe site. Mercury was found to be held primarily in the mineral soil (maximum depth of 60 to 100 cm), which contained more than 90% of the total ecosystem reservoir. However, Hg in foliage, bark, and litter plays a more dominant role in Hg cycling than the mineral soil. Mercury partitioning into ecosystem components at the Sierran forest sites was similar to that observed for other US forest sites. Vegetation and litter Hg reservoirs were significantly smaller in the sagebrush steppe system because of lower biomass. Data collected from these ecosystems after wildfire and prescribed burns showed a significant decrease in the Hg pool from certain reservoirs. No loss from mineral soil was observed for the study areas but data from fire severity points suggested that Hg in the upper few millimeters of surface soil may be volatilized due to exposure to elevated temperatures. Comparison of data from burned and unburned plots suggested that the only significant source of atmospheric Hg from the prescribed burn was combustion of litter. Differences in unburned versus burned Hg reservoirs at the forest wildfire site demonstrated that drastic reduction in the litter and above ground live biomass Hg reservoirs after burning had occurred. Sagebrush and litter were absent in the burned plots after a wildfire suggesting that both reservoirs were released during the fire. Mercury emissions due to fire from the forest prescribed burn, forest wildfire, and sagebrush steppe wildfire sites were roughly estimated at 2.0 to 5.1, 2.2 to 4.9, and 0.36+/-0.13 g ha(-1), respectively, with litter and vegetation being the most important sources.  相似文献

Small cetaceans (toothed whales odontoceti and dolphins delphinidae) have been traditionally hunted along the coast of Japan and fresh red meat and blubber, as well as boiled internal organs such as liver, kidney, lung and small intestine, are still being sold for human consumption. We surveyed mercury contamination in boiled liver, kidney and lung products marketed in Japan between 1999-2001. The average +/- S.D. of total mercury (T-Hg) was 370 +/- 525 (range: 7.60 approximately 1980, n = 26) microg/g in liver, 40.5 +/- 48.5 (7.30-95.1, n = 15) microg/g in kidney and 42.8 +/- 43.8 (2.10-79.6, n = 23) microg/g in lung. A high correlation was observed between T-Hg and selenium (Se) concentrations in these organs, supporting the formation of a Hg-Se complex. The formation of a Hg-Se complex probably contribute to the detoxification of Hg for cetaceans and allows a very large accumulation of Hg in livers. The provisional permitted level of T-Hg in marine foods set by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare is 0.4 microg/ g, and the provisional permitted weekly intake (PTWI) set by WHO is 5 microg/kg bw/week. The maximal T-Hg detected in boiled liver (1,980 microg/g) exceeds the permitted level by approximately 5,000 times and the consumption of only 0.15 g of liver exceeds the PTWI of 60 kg of body weight of the consumer, suggesting the possibility of an acute intoxication by T-Hg even after a single consumption of the product.  相似文献

Two detoxification mechanisms working in the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii to cope with mercury toxicity were investigated. Initially, the effect of mercury on the intracellular pool of non-protein thiols was studied in exponentially growing cultures exposed to sub-toxic HgCl2 concentrations. T. weissflogii cells responded by synthesizing metal-binding peptides, named phytochelatins (PCs), besides increasing the intracellular pool of glutathione and γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-EC). Intracellular Hg and PC concentrations increased with the Hg concentration in the culture medium, exhibiting a distinct dose-response relationship. However, considerations of the PCs-SH:Hg molar ratio suggest that glutathione could also be involved in the intracellular mercury sequestration. The time course of the non-protein thiol pool and Hg intracellular concentration shows that PCs, glutathione and γ-EC represent a rapid cellular response to mercury, although their role in Hg detoxification seems to lose importance at longer incubation times. The occurrence of a process of reduction of Hg(II) to Hg° and subsequent production of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) was also investigated at lower Hg concentrations, at which the PC synthesis doesn't seem to be involved. The significant (P < 0.01) correlation between the cellular density in solution and the production of DGM suggests that this diatom is capable of directly producing DGM, both in light and dark conditions. This finding has been confirmed by the absence of DGM production in the culture media containing formaldehyde-killed cells. Finally, the relationship between these two different pathways of Hg detoxification is discussed.  相似文献

Mercury use in small-scale gold mining is ubiquitous across Ghana but little is known about the extent to which such activities have contaminated community residents and miners. Here, occupational exposures to elemental mercury (via urine sampling) and dietary exposures to methylmercury (via hair sampling) were assessed among 120 participants recruited from a mining community located in the Talensi-Nabdam District of Ghana's Upper East region during summer 2009. More than one-fifth of the participants had moderately high levels of urinary mercury (> 10 μg/L) and 5% had urine mercury levels that exceeded the WHO guideline value of 50 μg/L. When participants were stratified according to occupation, those active in the mining industry had the highest mercury levels. Specifically, individuals that burned amalgam had urine mercury levels (median: 43.8 μg/L; mean ± SD: 171.1 ± 296.5 μg/L; n = 5) significantly higher than median values measured in mechanical operators (11.6 μg/L, n = 4), concession managers/owners (5.6 μg/L, n = 11), excavators that blast and chisel ore (4.9 μg/L, n = 33), individuals that sift and grind crushed ore (2.2 μg/L, n = 47), support workers (0.5 μg/L, n = 14), and those with no role in the mining sector (2.5 μg/L, n = 6). There was a significant positive Spearman correlation between fish consumption and hair mercury levels (r = 0.30) but not with urine mercury (r = 0.18) though further studies are needed to document which types of fish are consumed as well as portion sizes. Given that 200,000 people in Ghana are involved in the small-scale gold mining industry and that the numbers are expected to grow in Ghana and many other regions of the world, elucidating mercury exposure pathways in such communities is important to help shape policies and behaviors that may minimize health risks.  相似文献

The temporal concentration variations and spatial distribution of nitrogen compounds (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium) in the natural surface waters of Stara Zagora Region, Bulgaria, over a period of 1 year were assessed in the present study. Nitrate‐nitrogen concentrations in all surface water samples, except for the December value – 21.8 mg/L in Zetyovo Reservoir, were within the permissible national quality standards. NO2 ‐N could be classified as a priority pollutant of Chirpan and Zetyovo Reservoirs waters. The greatest extent of NH 4 +‐N pollution was registered in Chirpan Reservoir surface waters. The correlation study revealed appreciable mutual relationship only between NH4 +‐N and NO 2 ‐N in the surface waters. The hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) exhibited divergent apportionment of nitrogen compounds in the surface water bodies.  相似文献

In this paper, accumulation and distribution of microcystins (MCs) was examined monthly in six species of fish with different trophic levels in Meiliang Bay, Lake Taihu, China, from June to November 2005. Microcystins were analyzed by liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS). Average recoveries of spiked fish samples were 67.7% for MC-RR, 85.3% for MC-YR, and 88.6% for MC-LR. The MCs (MC-RR + MC-YR + MC-LR) concentration in liver and gut content was highest in phytoplanktivorous fish, followed by omnivorous fish, and was lowest in carnivorous fish; while MCs concentration in muscle was highest in omnivorous fish, followed by phytoplanktivorous fish, and was lowest in carnivorous fish. This is the first study reporting MCs accumulation in the gonad of fish in field. The main uptake of MC-YR in fish seems to be through the gills from the dissolved MCs. The WHO limit for tolerable daily intake was exceeded only in common carp muscle.  相似文献
