Objective

Develop an accelerated cine displacement encoding with stimulated echoes (DENSE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) sequence to enable clinically feasible myocardial strain evaluation in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

Materials and methods

A spiral cine DENSE sequence was modified by limiting the field of view in two dimensions using in-plane slice-selective pulses in the stimulated echo. This reduced breath hold duration from 20RR to 14RR intervals. Following phantom and pilot studies, the feasibility of the sequence to assess peak radial, circumferential, and longitudinal strain was tested in control subjects (n = 18) and then applied in DCM patients (n = 29).

Results

DENSE acquisition was possible in all participants. Elements of the data were not analysable in 1 control (6%) and 4 DCM r(14%) subjects due to off-resonance or susceptibility artefacts and low signal-to-noise ratio. Peak radial, circumferential, short-axis contour strain and longitudinal strain was reduced in DCM patients (p < 0.001 vs. controls) and strain measurements correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction (with circumferential strain r = − 0.79, p < 0.0001; with vertical long-axis strain r = − 0.76, p < 0.0001). All strain measurements had good inter-observer agreement (ICC > 0.80), except peak radial strain.

Discussion

We demonstrate the feasibility of CMR strain assessment in healthy controls and DCM patients using an accelerated cine DENSE technique. This may facilitate integration of strain assessment into routine CMR studies.

Objective

Fetal brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) offers quantitative analysis of the developing brain. The objective was to 1) quantify DTI measures across gestation in a cohort of fetuses without brain abnormalities using full retrospective correction for fetal head motion 2) compare results obtained in utero to those in preterm infants.

Materials and methods

Motion-corrected DTI analysis was performed on data sets obtained at 1.5T from 32 fetuses scanned between 21.29 and 37.57 (median 31.86) weeks. Results were compared to 32 preterm infants scanned at 3T between 27.43 and 37.14 (median 33.07) weeks. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) were quantified by region of interest measurements and tractography was performed.

Results

Fetal DTI was successful in 84% of fetuses for whom there was sufficient data for DTI estimation, and at least one tract could be obtained in 25 cases. Fetal FA values increased and ADC values decreased with age at scan (PLIC FA: p = 0.001; R2 = 0.469; slope = 0.011; splenium FA: p < 0.001; R2 = 0.597; slope = 0.019; thalamus ADC: p = 0.001; R2 = 0.420; slope = − 0.023); similar trends were found in preterm infants.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates that stable DTI is feasible on fetuses and provides evidence for normative values of diffusion properties that are consistent with aged matched preterm infants.

Objective

The aim of the study was to evaluate feasibility of diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging with background body signal suppression (DWIBS) method in diagnosing Hodgkin lymphoma in pediatric patients and to compare it with 18F-FDG PET/CT as a gold standard.

Materials and methods

Eleven patients (median age 14) with newly diagnosed Hodgkin lymphoma were examined with 18F-FDG PET/CT and MRI including whole-body DWIBS sequence (b = 0, 800 s/mm2), before the oncologic treatment. About 26 locations of lymphatic tissues were evaluated visually and quantitatively using ADCmean (DWIBS) and SUVmax (18F-FDG PET/CT), respectively.

Results

All affected lymph node regions (n = 134) diagnosed in 18F-FDG PET/CT were found with DWIBS, presenting decreased diffusion. Significant correlation was found between ADC and SUV values (R2 = − 0.37; p = 0.0001). Nevertheless, additional 33 regions were recognized only by DWIBS. They were significantly smaller than regions diagnosed by both methods.

Discussion

Agreement between DWIBS and 18F-FDG PET/CT for detection and staging of malignant lymphoma is high. DWIBS can be used for the evaluation of pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma.

Objective

Brain atrophy has the potential to become a biomarker for severity of radiation-induced side-effects. Particularly brain tumour patients can show great MRI signal changes over time caused by e.g. oedema, tumour progress or necrosis. The goal of this study was to investigate if such changes affect the segmentation accuracy of normal appearing brain and thus influence longitudinal volumetric measurements.

Materials and methods

T1-weighted MR images of 52 glioblastoma patients with unilateral tumours acquired before and three months after the end of radio(chemo)therapy were analysed. GM and WM volumes in the contralateral hemisphere were compared between segmenting the whole brain (full) and the contralateral hemisphere only (cl) with SPM and FSL. Relative GM and WM volumes were compared using paired t tests and correlated with the corresponding mean dose in GM and WM, respectively.

Results

Mean GM atrophy was significantly higher for full segmentation compared to cl segmentation when using SPM (mean ± std: ΔVGM,full = − 3.1% ± 3.7%, ΔVGM,cl = − 1.6% ± 2.7%; p < 0.001, d = 0.62). GM atrophy was significantly correlated with the mean GM dose with the SPM cl segmentation (r = − 0.4, p = 0.004), FSL full segmentation (r = − 0.4, p = 0.004) and FSL cl segmentation (r = -0.35, p = 0.012) but not with the SPM full segmentation (r = − 0.23, p = 0.1).

Conclusions

For accurate normal tissue volume measurements in brain tumour patients using SPM, abnormal tissue needs to be masked prior to segmentation, however, this is not necessary when using FSL.

Purpose

With the hypothesis that 4D flow can be used in evaluation of cardiac shunts, we seek to evaluate the multilevel and interreader reproducibility of measurements of the blood flow, shunt fraction and shunt volume in patients with atrial septum defect (ASD) in practice at multiple clinical sites.

Materials and methods

Four-dimensional flow MRI examinations were performed at four institutions across Europe and the US. Twenty-nine patients (mean age, 43 years; 11 male) were included in the study. Flow measurements were performed at three levels (valve, main artery and periphery) in both the pulmonary and systemic circulation by two independent readers and compared against stroke volumes from 4D flow anatomic data. Further, the shunt ratio (Qp/Qs) was calculated. Additionally, shunt volume was quantified at the atrial level by tracking the atrial septum.

Results

Measurements of the pulmonary blood flow at multiple levels correlate well whether measuring at the valve, main pulmonary artery or branch pulmonary arteries (r = 0.885–0.886). Measurements of the systemic blood flow show excellent correlation, whether measuring at the valve, ascending aorta or sum of flow from the superior vena cava (SVC) and descending aorta (r = 0.974–0.991). Intraclass agreement between the two observers for the flow measurements varies between 0.96 and 0.99. Compared with stroke volume, pulmonic flow is underestimated with 0.26 l/min at the main pulmonary artery level, and systemic flow is overestimated with 0.16 l/min at the ascending aorta level. Direct measurements of ASD flow are feasible in 20 of 29 (69%) patients.

Conclusion

Blood flow and shunt quantification measured at multiple levels and performed by different readers are reproducible and consistent with 4D flow MRI.

Objective

To provide a basis for the selection of suitable emulsifiers in oil-in-water emulsions used as tissue analogs for MRI experiments. Three different emulsifiers were investigated with regard to their ability to stabilize tissue-like oil-in-water emulsions. Furthermore, MR signal properties of the emulsifiers themselves and influences on relaxation times and ADC values of the aqueous phase were investigated.

Materials and methods

Polysorbate 60, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and soy lecithin were used as emulsifiers. MR characteristics of emulsifiers were assessed in aqueous solutions and their function as a stabilizer was examined in oil-in-water emulsions of varying fat content (10, 20, 30, 40, 50%). Stability and homogeneity of the oil-in-water emulsions were evaluated with a delay of 3 h and 9 h after preparation using T1 mapping and visual control. Signal properties of the emulsifiers were investigated by 1H-MRS in aqueous emulsifier solutions. Relaxometry and diffusion weighted MRI (DWI) were performed to investigate the effect of various emulsifier concentrations on relaxation times (T1 and T2) and ADC values of aqueous solutions.

Results

Emulsions stabilized by polysorbate 60 or soy lecithin were stable and homogeneous across all tested fat fractions. In contrast, emulsions with SDS showed a significantly lower stability and homogeneity. Recorded T1 maps revealed marked creaming of oil droplets in almost all of the emulsions with SDS. The spectral analysis showed several additional signals for polysorbate and SDS. However, lecithin remained invisible in 1H-MRS. Relaxometry and DWI revealed different influences of the emulsifiers on water: Polysorbate and SDS showed only minor effects on relaxation times and ADC values of aqueous solutions, whereas lecithin showed a strong decrease in both relaxation times (r1,lecithin = 0.11 wt.%−1 s−1, r2,lecithin = 0.57 wt.%−1 s−1) and ADC value (Δ(ADC)lecithin =  − 0.18 × 10–3 mm2/s⋅wt.%) with increasing concentration.

Conclusion

Lecithin is suggested as the preferred emulsifier of oil-in-water emulsions in MRI as it shows a high stabilizing ability and remains invisible in MRI experiments. In addition, lecithin is suitable as an alternative means of adjusting relaxation times and ADC values of water.

Objective

To quantify hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) perfusion and flow with the fast exchange regime-allowed Shutter-Speed model (SSM) compared to the Tofts model (TM).

Materials and methods

In this prospective study, 25 patients with HCC underwent DCE-MRI. ROIs were placed in liver parenchyma, portal vein, aorta and HCC lesions. Signal intensities were analyzed employing dual-input TM and SSM models. ART (arterial fraction), K trans (contrast agent transfer rate constant from plasma to extravascular extracellular space), v e (extravascular extracellular volume fraction), k ep (contrast agent intravasation rate constant), and τ i (mean intracellular water molecule lifetime) were compared between liver parenchyma and HCC, and ART, K trans, v e and k ep were compared between models using Wilcoxon tests and limits of agreement. Test–retest reproducibility was assessed in 10 patients.

Results

ART and v e obtained with TM; ART, v e , k e and τ i obtained with SSM were significantly different between liver parenchyma and HCC (p < 0.04). Parameters showed variable reproducibility (CV range 14.7–66.5 % for both models). Liver K trans and v e ; HCC v e and k ep were significantly different when estimated with the two models (p < 0.03).

Conclusion

Our results show differences when computed between the TM and the SSM. However, these differences are smaller than parameter reproducibilities and may be of limited clinical significance.

Objective

Oxygen-loaded nanobubbles have shown potential for reducing tumour hypoxia and improving treatment outcomes, however, it remains difficult to noninvasively measure the changes in partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) in vivo. The linear relationship between PO2 and longitudinal relaxation rate (R1) has been used to noninvasively infer PO2 in vitreous and cerebrospinal fluid, and therefore, this experiment aimed to investigate whether R1 is a suitable measurement to study oxygen delivery from such oxygen carriers.

Methods

T1 mapping was used to measure R1 in phantoms containing nanobubbles with varied PO2 to measure the relaxivity of oxygen (r1Ox) in the phantoms at 7 and 3 T. These measurements were used to estimate the limit of detection (LOD) in two experimental settings: preclinical 7 T and clinical 3 T MRI.

Results

The r1Ox in the nanobubble solution was 0.00057 and 0.000235 s−1/mmHg, corresponding to a LOD of 111 and 103 mmHg with 95% confidence at 7 and 3 T, respectively.

Conclusion

This suggests that T1 mapping could provide a noninvasive method of measuring a > 100 mmHg oxygen delivery from therapeutic nanobubbles.

Objective

Fluorine MR would benefit greatly from enhancements in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This study examines the sensitivity gain of 19F MR that can be practically achieved when moving from 9.4 to 21.1 T.

Materials and methods

We studied perfluoro-15-crown-5-ether (PFCE) at both field strengths (B0), as a pure compound, in the form of nanoparticles (NP) as employed to study inflammation in vivo, as well as in inflamed tissue. Brains, lymph nodes (LNs) and spleens were obtained from mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) that had been administered PFCE NPs. All samples were measured at both B0 with 2D-RARE and 2D-FLASH using 19F volume radiofrequency resonators together. T1 and T2 of PFCE were measured at both B0 strengths.

Results

Compared to 9.4 T, an SNR gain of > 3 was observed for pure PFCE and > 2 for PFCE NPs at 21.1 T using 2D-FLASH. A dependency of 19F T1 and T2 relaxation on B0 was demonstrated. High spatially resolved 19F MRI of EAE brains and LNs at 21.1 T revealed signals not seen at 9.4 T.

Discussion

Enhanced SNR and T1 shortening indicate the potential benefit of in vivo 19F MR at higher B0 to study inflammatory processes with greater detail.

Abstract

We fabricated a Bragg reflector type FBAR using AlN piezoelectric with quarter wavelength thickness, where the Bragg reflector was composed of W-SiO2 pairs. By numerical simulation considering actual acoustic losses of each layer, we analyzed the frequency response of the resonator and could explain it using an equivalent circuit with parasitic elements. The Effective electromechanical coupling constant (K 2 eff ) and the Quality factor (Qs ), figures of merit of the resonator, were about 1.1% and 307, respectively.</ab>  相似文献

Dynamic contrast enhanced MRI and pharmacokinetic modelling provide a powerful tool for tumour diagnosis and treatment evaluation. However, several studies show low reproducibility of the technique and poor precision of the transendothelial transfer constant K trans. This work proposes a theoretical framework describing how finite signal-noise-ratio (SNR) in the MR images is propagated throughout the measurement protocol to uncertainty on the kinetic parameter estimates.  相似文献

Abstract

Electrochemically prepared methoxyethoxide solutions have been suggested as precursors for sol-gel technology. Methoxyethoxides demonstrate higher stability in organic solvents than alkoxides; chelating properties of the ether oxygen cause considerable stability of methoxyethoxides to hydrolysis in comparison with the derivatives of aliphatic alcohols. This makes methoxyethoxides promising precursors for oxide synthesis. Methoxyethanol proved an exceptionally convenient solvent for electrochemical synthesis. The electrochemically prepared solutions demonstrate unique film-forming properties and were used for synthesis of the films of complex perovskites BaM11 1/3Mv 2/3O3 (M11 = Zn, Co, Ni; Mv = Nb, Ta), yttrium-stabilized ZrO2, PZT.  相似文献

Objective

To estimate pancreas graft relaxation times and concentrations of total fat, and the intracellular lipids of non-adipose pancreatic cells (NAPC) using proton (1H) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) during cold preservation.

Materials and methods

Grafts from 11 human donors were investigated. Each pancreas was perfused in situ with histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) or with University of Wisconsin solution and placed into a transport container. Temperature of the grafts was maintained at 4 ± 2 °C during transport to our hospital and MR scanning. A 1.5 T clinical scanner was used for the measurements. Single-voxel PRESS spectra were acquired using transmit–receiver head coil.

Results

Relaxation times were measured for lipid (–CH2–)n (T1, 287 ± 60 ms; T2, 27 ± 4 ms), and tissue water (T1, 670 ± 69 ms; T2, 77 ± 17 ms). Average total fat, and intracellular lipids of NAPC concentrations were 79.2 ± 100.8 (range 2.4–304.4), and 2.9 ± 1.2 mmol/kg ww, respectively.

Conclusion

We have shown that 1H-MRS is a useful tool for the estimation of pancreas graft lipid concentrations. Total pancreatic fat and especially content of intracellular lipids of NAPC are valuable measures for inspection of graft quality prior to transplantation or islet of Langerhans isolation.

Objective

To implement magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) on a permanent magnet 50 mT low-field system deployable as a future point-of-care (POC) unit and explore the quality of the parameter maps.

Materials and methods

3D MRF was implemented on a custom-built Halbach array using a slab-selective spoiled steady-state free precession sequence with 3D Cartesian readout. Undersampled scans were acquired with different MRF flip angle patterns and reconstructed using matrix completion and matched to the simulated dictionary, taking excitation profile and coil ringing into account. MRF relaxation times were compared to that of inversion recovery (IR) and multi-echo spin echo (MESE) experiments in phantom and in vivo. Furthermore, B0 inhomogeneities were encoded in the MRF sequence using an alternating TE pattern, and the estimated map was used to correct for image distortions in the MRF images using a model-based reconstruction.

Results

Phantom relaxation times measured with an optimized MRF sequence for low field were in better agreement with reference techniques than for a standard MRF sequence. In vivo muscle relaxation times measured with MRF were longer than those obtained with an IR sequence (T1: 182 ± 21.5 vs 168 ± 9.89 ms) and with an MESE sequence (T2: 69.8 ± 19.7 vs 46.1 ± 9.65 ms). In vivo lipid MRF relaxation times were also longer compared with IR (T1: 165 ± 15.1 ms vs 127 ± 8.28 ms) and with MESE (T2: 160 ± 15.0 ms vs 124 ± 4.27 ms). Integrated ΔB0 estimation and correction resulted in parameter maps with reduced distortions.

Discussion

It is possible to measure volumetric relaxation times with MRF at 2.5 × 2.5 × 3.0 mm3 resolution in a 13 min scan time on a 50 mT permanent magnet system. The measured MRF relaxation times are longer compared to those measured with reference techniques, especially for T2. This discrepancy can potentially be addressed by hardware, reconstruction and sequence design, but long-term reproducibility needs to be further improved.

Abstract

We reported herein the temperature-dependent dielectric properties of K0.8M0.4Ti1.6O4 (M?=?Ni, Zn) lepidocrocite titanate ceramics at the frequency f of 103, 104 and 105 Hz. This titanate is an example of layered alkali titanium oxides possessing two-dimensional (2D) sheets of edge-shared TiO6 octahedra, in contrast to other widely studied materials with mostly corner-shared TiO6 motifs. The giant dielectric constants ε′ ~104 and the dielectric losses tan δ ~ 0.5–2 were obtained upon heating from RT to 250?°C. These values in our water-free ceramics are comparable to those previously reported in lepidocrocite titanate and related structures containing up to 15%wt water. The results were explained considering (i) Maxwell-Wagner polarization of interlayer species, and (ii) the possible formation of internal barrier layer capacitors (IBLCs) via the oxidized surfaces.  相似文献

Abstract

Solid state synthesis route was employed to form Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 powder. The calcined powder was high energy ball milled at different milling speeds to get powders of different particle sizes. XRD pattern of the ceramics made from these powders show the presence of pure perovskite. This paper deals with a systematic study of the pyroelectric and the fatigue properties of the ceramics. The room temperature pyroelectric coefficient (p) attains the minimum value p?=?0.119X10?8 C cm?2 K?1 for the ceramic made from the powder milled at 250?rpm. The fatigue was also found to be minimum for the same ceramic samples.  相似文献

Objective

This study aims to explore the relationship between plaque surface morphology and neovascularization using a high temporal and spatial resolution 4D contrast-enhanced MRI/MRA sequence.

Materials and methods

Twenty one patients with either recent symptoms or a carotid artery stenosis ≥40% were recruited in this study. Plaque surface morphology and luminal stenosis were determined from the arterial phase MRA images. Carotid neovascularization was evaluated by a previously validated pharmacokinetic (PK) modeling approach. K trans (transfer constant) and v p (partial plasma volume) were calculated in both the adventitia and plaque.

Results

Image acquisition and analysis was successfully performed in 28 arteries. Mean luminal stenosis was 44% (range 11–82%). Both adventitial and plaque K trans in ulcerated/irregular plaques were significantly higher than smooth plaques (0.079 ± 0.018 vs. 0.064 ± 0.011 min?1, p = 0.02; 0.065 ± 0.013 vs. 0.055 ± 0.010 min?1, p = 0.03, respectively). Positive correlations between adventitial K trans and v p against stenosis were observed (r = 0.44, p = 0.02; r = 0.55, p = 0.01, respectively).

Conclusion

This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a single sequence to acquire both high resolution 4D CE-MRA and DCE-MRI to evaluate both plaque surface morphology and function. The results demonstrate significant relationships between lumen surface morphology and neovascularization.

Objective

Recent work showed the feasibility of measuring velocity pulsatility in the perforating arteries at the level of the BG using 3T MRI. However, test–retest measurements have not been performed, yet. This study assessed the test–retest reliability of 3T MRI blood flow velocity measurements in perforating arteries in the BG.

Materials and methods

Two-dimensional phase-contrast cardiac gated (2D-PC) images were acquired for 35 healthy controls and repeated with and without repositioning. 2D-PC images were processed and analyzed, to assess the number of detected perforating arteries (Ndetected), mean blood flow velocity (Vmean), and velocity pulsatility index (vPI). Paired t-tests and Bland–Altman plots were used to compare variance in outcome parameters with and without repositioning, and limits of agreement (LoA) were calculated.

Results

The LoA was smallest for Vmean (35%) and highest for vPI (79%). Test–retest reliability was similar with and without repositioning of the subject.

Discussion

We found similar LoA with and without repositioning indicating that the measurement uncertainty is dominated by scanner and physiological noise, rather than by planning. This enables to study hemodynamic parameters in perforating arteries at clinically available scanners, provided sufficiently large sample sizes are used to mitigate the contribution of scanner- and physiological noise.

Abstract

We have confirmed the theory of Ishibashi and Orihara for the frequency dependence of coercive fields in ferroelectric thin films.SrBi2NbTaO9, SrBi2Ta2O9, and PbZr1-x Ti x O3 (PZT) data from DeVilbis et al. reveal a power-law dependence of form Ec (f) = Bfd/α , where d is the dimensionality of domains (ca. unity in uniaxial ferroelectrics such as SBT and SBNT) and α is approximately 6, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Models are also presented for the polarization and fatigue data from NEC of micron-sized thin-film strontium bismuth tantalate capacitors, emphasizing behaviour at unsaturated voltages.  相似文献

Objective

19F MRI requires biocompatible and non-toxic soluble contrast agents with high fluorine content and with suitable 19F relaxation times. Probes based on a DOTP chelate with 12 magnetically equivalent fluorine atoms (DOTP-tfe) and a lanthanide(III) ion shortening the relaxation times were prepared and tested.

Methods

Complexes of DOTP-tfe with trivalent paramagnetic Ce, Dy, Ho, Tm, and Yb ions were synthetized and characterized. 19F relaxation times were determined and compared to those of the La complex and of the empty ligand. In vitro and in vivo 19F MRI was performed at 4.7 T.

Results

19F relaxation times strongly depended on the chelated lanthanide(III) ion. T1 ranged from 6.5 to 287 ms, T2 from 3.9 to 124.4 ms, and T2* from 1.1 to 3.1 ms. All complexes in combination with optimized sequences provided sufficient signal in vitro under conditions mimicking experiments in vivo (concentrations 1.25 mM, 15-min scanning time). As a proof of concept, two contrast agents were injected into the rat muscle; 19F MRI in vivo confirmed the in vivo applicability of the probe.

Conclusion

DOTP-based 19F probes showed suitable properties for in vitro and in vivo visualization and biological applications. The lanthanide(III) ions enabled us to shorten the relaxation times and to trim the probes according to the actual needs. Similar to the clinically approved Gd3+ chelates, this customized probe design ensures consistent biochemical properties and similar safety profiles.
